Actually, Batman was a pretty bad Green Lantern because his will power was based off of fear, thats why he had to give up the ring.

Fear focuses. Fear clarifies. Fear takes away all needless trivialities, until nothing remains but you and what needs to be done.

He has had to live with fear since he was a young child. A martial artist takes away all needless variables as they battle; a detective takes away all needless distractions as they seek the truth; a playboy obsesses over the public learning his dirty little secrets. In all aspects of his life, Bruce has known fear.

Batman would wield the yellow light as a tool; he would not bathe in it like Scarecrow, nor be consumed by it to spray it around like Mongul or Arkilo. Like everything else he has had to overcome, Bruce Wayne would master the yellow light.

If you wanted to write a "Redemption of the Batman Corps." storyline - you'd have enough to go on.

they all do that. the ring is apparently a makeover capacity as well, with aesthetical preferences of its own.

there're lots of reasons to dislike the GL stuff, and to me, this is definitely one of them. ;P

Indeed. A yellow ring (based on instilling fear in others) tried to recruit him at one point as well and he basically told it to piss off. That one he would have been OP as though.

the fear batman strives for is not the same fear the Sinestro corps goes for, they instill terror, batman tries to drive criminals from crime... I'm sure batman could use any power ring he wanted. He would be a super powered green lantern because of his will to fight crime... the lengths he has gone to for that task.. and he's smarter and more logical than hal jordan. he couldve taken Paralax

Batman would never be able to possess the Green Ring anyways. The Green Lantern is someone who is without fear, but Batman is afraid of bats. He just uses his fear as his strength. He would never be able to have the ring, not matter how strong his will.

Actually the Green Lanterns have the ability to overcome fear (as stated in the recruitment phrase when a ring finds a new GL), they are not without it. In fact their weakness to yellow is based on the fact that they do have some sort of fear. Post-Parallax they are trained to overcome that fear and can, therefore, overcome the color yellow.

I was under the assumption that the reason they were weak against the Yellow power was because it induced fear, causing their own powers to become weaker.

The weakness to yellow is caused by the yellow impurity of the Green Lantern Batteries. The main battery on Oa contained the essence of Parallax. All personal batteries draw their power from that battery and, therefore, contained a portion of that impurity. Parallax is the essence of fear.

The Guardians discovered that the impurity was necessary in order for the Lanterns to focus the power of willpower. Without a fear of something (usually failure) willpower is useless. Willpower is about overcoming the fear. Several of the emotional rings work like this. Blue, for example, represents hope. But hope alone is useless, in order for hope to become a reality another emotion is required to move it along. This can be green (willpower), love (violet), greed (orange), etc. Hope can magnify a power but alone it is useless.

So you are partially correct. Yellow power does induce fear, however a correctly trained and experienced Green Lantern can overcome that fear (much like Batman can overcome his fear of bats.)

GL has always been one of my favorites too... but as an adult I have tried a few times to pick up the comic books and just been overwhelmed by the continuity... I want to start at the beginning, but which beginning? Can you recommend?

Start with Rebirth. It's not the newest reboot but is close and it gives a lot of info about the "new" GL corp rules, powers, and the other colors. It also brings all four earth GLs into play at once for the first time. Plus Geoff Johns is one of the best comic book authors in recent memory.

This list is a good order for continuity starting with Rebirth
