God must really hate kids in Africa.

[–]Godfodder 2 points3 points ago

Right now she feels happy, and even a little loved, because she found a dress on sale. She probably feels good in it too, and because she thinks it's from God she doesn't have to feel buyer's remorse.

But you could tell her she just happened upon the dress by chance, and probable odds worked in her favor. You could tell her that it's ridiculous that God would get her a dress on sale instead of saving millions of starving children. But that would take away her happiness, and she would feel guilty about the purchase that otherwise hurt no one.

I would just leave it alone. Just because it represents everything wrong with the idea of God, doesn't mean you should make your friend unhappy. She's wrong, but she's allowed to be. Just roll your eyes and move on. You can't fix everybody.

Point taken and well stated. I believe I'll take this approach.

[–]confusedbrit 4 points5 points ago

It's a shame she didn't pray for world peace or meaningful gun control in the US....

[–]emberx[S] 1 point2 points ago

My thoughts exactly.

[–]emberx[S] 0 points1 point ago

TL;DR - Woman wants dress, prays for it to go on sale in her size, it does and thinks god was responsible.

[–]Fishblur 2 points3 points ago

Ugh I hate people who say they are religious for things like that.

[–]txmadison 0 points1 point ago

I guess believing that her deity granted her that wish is easier for her to accept than she's probably a whale and no one else wanted that particular size dress anyway, as anyone who'd already wanted to recover their sectionals had done so.

[–]emberx[S] 1 point2 points ago

In actuality she's no whale at all.

[–]rdulany 2 points3 points ago

Yeah... Meanwhile in Afric.... nevermind.

[–]Grinstall 2 points3 points ago

I like how in this story God saves the dress, but is all "Girrrrrl... that belt's too trashy. Try some of these other ones on."

[–]Jilly33 2 points3 points ago

Lets just forget for a second that God is imaginary and pretend He is real for a moment. Yeah, because God sits around wondering and worrying about your shopping needs. Is she really that selfish that she thinks that her God, instead of caring about world hunger, rape, murder, genocide and the suffering of millions on a daily basis, would rather spend his time playing magic tricks to get her the size and price she wants on a dress. What a wonderful God. Where do I sign up?

I see a "First world problems" meme coming

I know a girl wh o did the exact same prayer but found out the last dress just got sold minutes before she showed up and free belts were given too...

joke aside I would share that link with her: http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_norton_how_to_buy_happiness.html

just because everybody should see it.

and because maybe god wanted her to be generous to other for a change.

[–]emberx[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the link to the ted talk, was truly interesting.

[–]dens421 0 points1 point ago

I tried it : a friend of mine who often hosts party at her house had her iPod stolen during one of those gathering ... It felt so unfair and I had just watched this talk I figured I have enough money in the bank who's not giving joy to anybody. Let's put it to good use.

She was truly touched by the gift.. and I really felt good.

It does work!

Go! Make other people happy!

[–]dens421 0 points1 point ago

http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_norton_how_to_buy_happiness.html

I would share that with her ... and with everybody else!

while refraining myself from mentionning that other girl who made the same prayer but arrived in the store 5 minutes after her ... and got hit by a truck as her teary eyed didn't allow her to see the truck coming at her while she was yelling her frustration in the middle of the street

[–]NancyTheGrimm 0 points1 point ago

Ignorant. If anything she should pray for more reasonable things. Like the end of wars. Or famine. Or hate. But nah. Guess a dress'll do.

[–]Sweatx23 1 point2 points ago

But the starving children pray for dresses and they recieve almost no dresses.

[–]biggs5619 0 points1 point ago

I'm going to guess that she is either really fat/skinny so it was still there or it was really ugly and no one in their right mind would buy it

[–]daisies13 0 points1 point ago

So god is a dress retailer, not an omniscient savior? oooooh. ok.

[–]udbluehens 0 points1 point ago

god, in their own mythology, isnt a fucking genie.

[–]Pancakeslayer86 0 points1 point ago

I'm guessing a fat girl/drag queen with bad taste

[–]gburggallup 0 points1 point ago

The thirty two likes is the worst part.

Really 32 people zombies agree?

[–]Scourge108 0 points1 point ago

I'd do the one about how I wanted a bike so I prayed for it, but that didn't work, so I stole the bike and prayed for forgiveness. If anyone gets butthurt about it you can say it was just a joke, chill.

[–]Murdocx13 1 point2 points ago

If only it really worked like that. Dear God, I want a pet cyborg t-rex that lets me ride him and tells funny jokes. Also a lightsaber. Amen!

[–]atheism_for_all 0 points1 point ago

A woman prays for a dress to go on sale in her size AND HER PRAYER WAS ANSWERED? Clearly God must exist. Thats it, Im off to church to repent for my sins. Changing my screen name to Jesus_for_all. PRAISE HIM IN ALL HIS GLORY.

[–]Eurysilas 1 point2 points ago

How completely asinine. Even if I were Christian, I'd be offended at this post.

Rip her a new one.

[–]BenIncognito -3 points-2 points ago

Yeah it is pretty terrible that an action that didn't hurt anyone is attributed to a being that doesn't exist.

[–]emberx[S] 1 point2 points ago

I'm more going towards the aspect that, since this person believes in the power of prayer, that they used to it pray for a dress.

I'm pretty sure someone else in the worlds needs more essential things in life than a dress to wear.

[–]tedlarraby 0 points1 point ago

Maybe God is just a materialistic asshole. Maybe the Word of God is BUY BUY BUY. CONSUME.

Sounds like "They Live."

[–]BenIncognito -1 points0 points ago

Yeah they do, but since there is no power of prayer why give a shit? It isn't like if this girl had focused her wishful thinking on the hungry instead of a dress the hungry would have been fed and she wouldn't have gotten the dress.

You're getting worked up over someone doing literally nothing and getting lucky.
