Totally. Many years ago, we had the Tour the France passing through our town. We got all excited, set up elevated seating for ourselves, stocked up on bear etc. Then, after waiting for hours, it turns out the entire pack stuck together for that particular leg. The whole group passed us by in maybe 2 seconds, and we were all like "ok, lets start cleaning up".

[–]sideone 190 points191 points ago

stocked up on bear

that's hardcore.

[–]jeroen94704 113 points114 points ago

Yeah, we were pretty hard core back then. Eventually we got lazy though, and switched to beer. Easier to catch and open up.

[–]Bullranger 6 points7 points ago

However with the Tour de France you have the caravan which gives you free stuff an hour before, and all the hype from the crowd leading towards it makes it worthwhile

[–]WarmAppleTart 15 points16 points ago

I'm gonna go ahead and assume his native language is french and that he knows what it's called.

[–]Thydamine 2 points3 points ago

Le Tourè du Français

[–]elemcee 1 point2 points ago

That's exactly what happened to me watching the Tour of California a couple of years ago. We had heard there had been a breakaway, but I guess the peloton had caught up to them by the time they got to us. :(

[–]colmshan1990 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, when the Tour de France passed through my town in 1998 in Ireland I basically gave up on watching cycling live.

Waited for hours for a good spot- and a blur of colour passed through the town in 10 seconds, I was not impressed, which is pretty hard for a big event to do to a 7 year old boy.

[–]otaku175 0 points1 point ago

I was in Cahors a couple weeks ago when the Tour went through. We were just passing through and had no idea it would be there, but we waited for 30 minutes to see it, and I'd say that gif pretty much sums up my reaction.

[–]RonaldFuckingPaul 0 points1 point ago

best bike marathon ever!

[–]Sinavestia -1 points0 points ago

So brave.

[–]dancing_raptor_jesus 22 points23 points ago

It was exactly liket that... Two separate groups came past 10 minutes apart then nothing. Though it was fun and I got some good pics :)

[–]ratheismfilter2 3 points4 points ago

Show pics!

[–]dancing_raptor_jesus 3 points4 points ago

I'll defo get some up soon, I just need to get them of my camera.

[–]ReignOfTerror -4 points-3 points ago

Obligatory "op will surely deliver"

[–]paranoidkiwie 102 points103 points ago

What's a bike marathon?

[–]pchieng 53 points54 points ago

cycling 26.2 miles? i'm out!

[–]Strykerzs[S] 63 points64 points ago

It's not as hard as you think

[–]The_Mosephus 77 points78 points ago

26 miles is easy sauce.

[–]RogueNine 169 points170 points ago

It's the .2 that'll kill you.

[–]t_Lancer 30 points31 points ago

because you have to ride though fire. that's why it kills.

[–]XenthisX 6 points7 points ago

This kills the cyclist.

[–]whyisthisnamesolong -2 points-1 points ago

Reddit is a fickle beast my friend. Memes come and go like the seasons change. You've used a dying meme. God save you.

Edit: Well he WAS drowning in downvotes. It seems the beast hast changed its mind once more

[–]Pickled_Pankake 3 points4 points ago

Fuck you motherfucker, it's funny.

[–]drewuke 10 points11 points ago

/scene.

[–]feureau 12 points13 points ago

Can I just do the .2 hard mode and skip the easy part?

[–]MayorEmanuel 7 points8 points ago

What would hard mode be? Could you only stay in gear one?

[–]feureau 11 points12 points ago

Nope. You have to start in gear six and work your way down.

[–]MayorEmanuel 6 points7 points ago

Uphill the entire time.

[–]kabomlamma 2 points3 points ago

<laughtrack>haha.mp3</laughtrack>

[–]NoobuchadnezaR 1 point2 points ago

As long as its all down hill

[–]OneCello 7 points8 points ago

26 is really not that bad even with a few hills.

[–]sparton192 2 points3 points ago

No 26 isn't bad just when you're racing and going close to 30mph on a bike it gets hard.

[–]OneCello 1 point2 points ago

30mph is not your average speed for an above average cyclist. My average is around 19-23 and for me that's hard.

[–]sparton192 1 point2 points ago

Olympians are... hence why it's harder.

[–]OneCello 2 points3 points ago

We were talking about Olympians? I see. Right you are.

[–]recursive 0 points1 point ago

FWIW, sparton was talking about a race scenario, which can approach 30mph, although I've never been in one that averaged more than 27. Arguably, that's "close to 30mph" though.

[–]Lord-Longbottom -3 points-2 points ago

(For us English aristocrats, I leave you this 6 miles -> 48.0 Furlongs) - Pip pip cheerio chaps!

[–]Hurricane043 4 points5 points ago

I rode 32 miles through the New River Gorge without having biked in months. That's up hills, through mud, on rocky cliffs. Biking isn't that hard. A beginner would just take a while to do it, but they could do it.

[–]MisterNixon 0 points1 point ago

It's all relative to how hard you pedal. If you take your time you could go pretty far.

[–]dreamscapesaga 5 points6 points ago

I believe a beginner could make it in about two hours without much training or recovery time (assuming few hills).

[–]IsThisTheRealLife 9 points10 points ago

Bicycles are an awesomely efficient means of transport.

[–]nattyd 3 points4 points ago

Racing cyclist here. The secret to biking a long way is just eating.

When you ride a bike, your body needs energy faster than it can get from burning fat, so it burns muscle glycogen (a sugar derivative) instead. The problem is that most people run out of glycogen after an hour or two. But, if you down a Clif bar every 60-90, minutes, you can ride and ride. My longest days are ~130 miles with 10,000' vertical climbing, and I'm not particularly talented.

Of course, it helps to have a saddle that doesn't make you go numb!

Edit: Running out of glycogen is known as "bonking" by distance athletes, and is a very distinctive feeling. You get lightheaded and feel jittery and shaky, and are suddenly very weak. It's pretty interesting.

[–]slash196 0 points1 point ago

I've bonked twice, back when I was doing serious 40-70 mile trips. One day I went out after a bowl of cheerios and a peanut butter sandwich. Brutal.

[–]Thedirtyburg1 1 point2 points ago

I doubt a beginner would be able to do that on a normal bike

[–]stonedsasquatch 4 points5 points ago

I do about 20 miles on a bike 3 times a week for cardio, takes me about an hour and it sucks but it is very doable if you are even the smallest bit athletic. A beginner might have issues though

[–]bw1870 4 points5 points ago

You can reach a 12-14 mph average on a hybrid bike without much trouble.

[–]The_Mosephus 0 points1 point ago

i usually average 15-18 on my hybrid bike with an equal amount of up and down hill riding (out and back the same way).

[–]slowbie 0 points1 point ago

Depends on your definition of normal

[–]Thedirtyburg1 2 points3 points ago

I would consider a department store bike with flat bars and treaded tires as normal. Those bastards suck after the first 10 miles.

[–]dwightmoody 0 points1 point ago

They would (as long as there wasn't too much climbing), they'd just be pretty destroyed at the end of it.

[–]bafta 0 points1 point ago

It's twice as hard as I think, over 30 mph uphill both ways

[–]Poisoneded 1 point2 points ago

I've done 16 easily. It's not physically straining by any means. That said, if you go on the hottest day of the year and you were not hydrated BEFORE you go, you're gonna have a bad time.

I went last summer on a 16-18 mile ride in 96+ weather and threw up afterwards and was stuck in bed til the next day.

[–]ZmakiZ 2 points3 points ago

It's worse than that, they have to cover 224 km (about 140 miles).

[–]nattyd 2 points3 points ago

For most amateur racers, 30-40 miles is a typical light training ride. It's almost not worth going out for less.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

i am out after .2.

[–]biggerx 0 points1 point ago

You go about 20 MPH on a bike...

[–]Werro_123 0 points1 point ago

I went 34.4 yesterday

[–]Lord-Longbottom 1 point2 points ago

(For us English aristocrats, I leave you this 26.2 miles -> 209.6 Furlongs) - Pip pip cheerio chaps!

[–]zemoto 4 points5 points ago

I imagine he is referring to the Olympic bike races, which are about 150 miles long.

[–]Aaronplane 5 points6 points ago

It's called a road race.

Even then, a lot of road races take place on looped courses, since there are beginner racers and elite racers, and their races are different distances, so watching them is a little easier because you get to see them more than once.

Criteriums are actually REALLY fun to watch, since it's usually a short course with many laps, so you see them all the time.

Track cycling is probably the best to watch though, since you can see everybody the whole time. Some track races are 15+ miles long.

[–]nattyd 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, crits make for great, crashy spectating.

I actually find them scarier to watch then to ride in, mostly because I'm too winded to be nervous while they're going on.

[–]DiscreetSqueezer 1 point2 points ago

Crits rule. My home town does a big series every year all around town. Sunday on a big hill on the course (nicknamed Crybaby Hill) tons of people just hangs out in front yards and get drunk and cheer. Bands play and everything.

I found an awesome video of it.

[–]rondo7 0 points1 point ago

awesome video man:) certainly don't have this kind of vibe at crits in scotland. No thanks to the permanent cold and rain!

[–]Lord-Longbottom 0 points1 point ago

(For us English aristocrats, I leave you this 150 miles -> 1200.0 Furlongs) - Pip pip cheerio chaps!

[–]Strykerzs[S] 2 points3 points ago

A really long bike race?

[–]Ian_Itor 1 point2 points ago

At a marathon you run. The only -thon where you cycle is a Triathlon.

[–]recursive 4 points5 points ago

I biked in a duathlon last weekend. Tell it to them.

[–]nattyd 0 points1 point ago

Most professional road cycling races are over 100 miles. In this year's Tour de France, each day's stage (not counting time trials) was between 92 and 140 miles long.

[–]Ruckus 19 points20 points ago

I'd imagine the spectators of a 'bike marathon' would be more like, "Wow they invented a new sport!"

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 31 points32 points ago

Have Bloat inflate.

[–]Strykerzs[S] 20 points21 points ago

It took me a good 20 seconds to finally understand your comment.

[–]GraffyHooves 12 points13 points ago

I still can't decipher it.

[–]Sempiternus 15 points16 points ago

Bloat, much like Pudge, is a fish.

[–]GraffyHooves 6 points7 points ago

Oohhh in order to get them out...I feel bad I couldn't figure this out on my own.

[–]Ayevee 1 point2 points ago

He did, watch the movie.

[–]Frooken 22 points23 points ago

Water floating on water, now I've seen it all!

[–]sideone 13 points14 points ago

Really? Have you seen a man eat his own head?

[–]Frooken 9 points10 points ago

Maybe...

[–]Pankaiks 2 points3 points ago

Density of salt water >Density of fresh water. Here is an example of such an occurance.

[–]Frooken 2 points3 points ago

Do you really thing that those fishes are in fresh water right now?

Pretty sure they are all salt water. Could be wrong though...

[–]online222222 1 point2 points ago

the water in the bags would probably be purer than the ocean

[–]rjp0008 0 points1 point ago

Still denser than air though...

[–]tittyjack 0 points1 point ago

I know, dat physics.

[–]FreakInDenial 0 points1 point ago

It's obviously fish oil

[–]FromaLand 6 points7 points ago

I think now they drink a lot.

[–]12barney 10 points11 points ago

I was at the tour de France a few days ago. You get free stuff. Get 10 seconds of cyclists going past and then go home. Sounds boring but you get ALOT of free stuff :D

[–]dreamscapesaga 9 points10 points ago

Such as?

I'm not much of a fan of watching bike races, but I'm a huge fan of free stuff.

[–]Wojtek_the_bear 111 points112 points ago

wallets, cell-phones. it all depends on how good you are at pickpocketing

[–]greengopher5 8 points9 points ago

you can also get the player's bicycles if someone crashes close to you

[–]jlennon4422 1 point2 points ago

The imagery of that is hilarious

[–]sloaninator 10 points11 points ago

I got herpes when I went.

[–]Snuhmeh 6 points7 points ago

Unless you are on the Champs Élysées and they don't throw a single goddamn thing but you see the cyclists eight times. Good trade off.

[–]ihavebighair 0 points1 point ago

Great trade off. I went buck wild for that shit.

[–]Bickus 6 points7 points ago

Hence the appeal of criteriums/kermesses. Apparently in Belgium the course is arranged such that you've got enough time to go back in and get another beer between passages of the field.

[–]AUBeastmaster 6 points7 points ago

I think you're the first person commenting on here with any real knowledge of cycling. Chapeau.

Cycling (especially on the ProTour level) is a sport best watched on TV, though if you have the chance to make it to a huge mountain pass, or a sprint finish of a stage, it's worth it to experience the energy of the crowds. And beers.

You don't go to a road race to follow the race, you go to be a part of the atmosphere.

Like you said - crits/kermesses/circuit races are more spectator friendly. Track cycling and cyclocross, now those are completely different animals (and usually involve a lot more beer).

[–]nattyd 0 points1 point ago

That's WorldTour there, chap. Just kidding, the UCI is a silly organization.

[–]AUBeastmaster 0 points1 point ago

WorldTeamProCyclingTourRaceUCIApproved

[–]nattyd 0 points1 point ago

Exactly. Although the naming isn't nearly as random as the rules... or the enforcement.

[–]nattyd 2 points3 points ago

I've always wanted to experience a local belgian kermesse. Sounds like an awesome scene.

[–]cuddlimaus 13 points14 points ago

its the ideal way for redditors to get some sunshine. back to your device after the bikers pass....

[–]thatoneguy889 0 points1 point ago

But the Olympics are in London.

[–]nickaroo 0 points1 point ago

Then go to London.

[–]mikey145 2 points3 points ago

I saw the Tour de France ride through Dijon a while back, we were there for a few hours. They had cars driving by throwing free stuff into the crowd, entertainers, music, etc. Not sure how common this is, but it was pretty fun.

[–]Jewtheist 2 points3 points ago

I was in Paris a few years ago around the last stage of the Tour de France, where they do like 8 laps around the Champs-Elysees...it was exactly like this 8x...everyone there and gone in a flash

[–]howaboutthis13 5 points6 points ago

It really is only worth it on a climb. Preferably when they are spread out a lot.

[–]Aethien 1 point2 points ago

Even in a climb, unless you go to the really steep ones, they still rush past in no time. Damn bastards cycle fast.

[–]looksfamiliar 0 points1 point ago

Or a time trial. The prologue of the TdF in London (short time trial) was a great day as you see all the riders several times as they practice the course.

[–]Dr_ChimRichalds 0 points1 point ago

At least you were somewhere where you got to see it more than once.

Though I'd imagine it was just as disappointing the other seven times as it was the first.

[–]nattyd 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, but in that case they're going by at 30-40 mph on cobbles. Pretty wild.

[–]Floor_Kicker 0 points1 point ago

I was one and that's exactly what we were like. The roads were closed so I just took advantage of the empty roads afterwards.

[–]Indecisi0n 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I was there to take some pictures as they passed by in my town, that was pretty much exactly the sentiment as they had gone by

[–]macadactyl 1 point2 points ago

You think any of those people are remotely sober by the time cyclists reach them?

[–]1rv 1 point2 points ago

We just went to the pub.

[–]saviouroftheweak 0 points1 point ago

I was there and that was the general consensus

[–]Mr_fidge 0 points1 point ago

I was there. It was shit, 30 minute train ride there, 3 minutes of seeing some bikes, 30 minute (packed) train home. WOO OLYMPICS!

[–]SirDidymus 0 points1 point ago

Thank you, I was explaining that exact gif to my friend a couple days ago.

[–]tealess 0 points1 point ago

Mostly they just go home or to the pub :D

The olympic road race went past about 5 mins from my house, so it wasn't exactly a large trip for me.

[–]IsThisTheRealLife 1 point2 points ago

This is why you must dress in a silly costume and chase them for 100m before passing out from exhaustion.

[–]pdnick -1 points0 points ago

It's like a slower version of NASCAR with more French people.

[–]viper23 1 point2 points ago

Yea, it's exactly like this. I was at the Tour de France (Stage 15) this year, and there's a whole parade of sponsor vehicles that comes through, throwing small goodies at you (I believe I have a keychain and a wristband) and then the riders come through in about 10 seconds. Exciting stuff.

[–]Aloaf 0 points1 point ago

Witnessed the tour de france, ended up being more excited about the gifts being thrown at us beforehand.

[–]seager 0 points1 point ago

Jokes on you! We just go back inside our house and watch the rest on tv! :p

[–]eddhall 0 points1 point ago

I was watching in Fulham, we did what all Brits would do in similar situations, went to the pub!

[–]gummyvitamins 0 points1 point ago

you go back to drinking.

[–]70camaro 0 points1 point ago

Those fish should be incredibly thankful that they are in those bags. The liquid upon which their bags float is quite obviously too dense for a fish to inhabit.

I've said it once, I'll say it again; Hollywood needs to consult physicists from time to time.

[–]Johnny_deadeyes 1 point2 points ago

I have not seen this film, but I have a problem with the buoyancy of these water-filled bags. They seem to be floating a bit high in the water. But then again, sentient, talking fish, so maybe expecting proper physics is out of line.

[–]TeCuervo 0 points1 point ago

Why is the water in the bag above the waterline?

[–]Jakobud 0 points1 point ago

Bike Marathon? lol

[–]ItsOnlyNatural 0 points1 point ago

Man, that gif is so sad. If their bags are floating that means they are in fresh water on top of salt water, which means even if they manage to escape their self-imposed capsule they'll still die.

[–]donrhummy 0 points1 point ago

This is why you always watch cycling races on mountains. They go much slower up the mountains and are spread out for almost an hour (on the big mountains).

[–]Lenten1 0 points1 point ago

The Giro d'Italia went through my street last year. I had the live feed on tv on mute, when I saw they were approaching my street I looked out the window for about 15 seconds and went back to the internets.

I really, really, don't understand why people watch stuff like that for hours on end.

[–]THISgai 0 points1 point ago

Why are they floating? Seriously, what is this magic? They're in a bag of water, in water. Their densities are EQUAL. AHHHHHHHH

[–]seianat 0 points1 point ago

Only the little pocket of air should be above water....

[–]bobbylantine 0 points1 point ago

I'd be more worried about why I'm a fish and how I got into a plastic bag.

[–]Taki3d 0 points1 point ago

More importantly...why is water floating on water?

[–]McSpoish 0 points1 point ago

As a person who watched the Olympic cycling 2 days ago, you are absolutely correct.

[–]Lance_Pharmstrong -1 points0 points ago

What the hell is a bike marathon?

[–]Mitz510 -1 points0 points ago

Since when did traveling become a sport? Bicycling, NASCAR, rowing, go karts. What's next airplane racing?

[–]reedm 0 points1 point ago

What are those bags filled with?? That bubble of gas at the top must be helium or something to have the bag float so high.

[–]ichbinbonbon 0 points1 point ago

Disney/Pixar magic has a boiling point similar to that of helium

[–]BrentNewbury 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't the water level in the bag be level with that of the water outside the bag? Unless there of different densities?

[–]unireed -1 points0 points ago

a bike marathon? you must be kidding me.

[–]dwightmoody -1 points0 points ago

"bike marathon"?

[–]suicidedream 0 points1 point ago

I was working at the 250km mens bike marathon on saturday, and this is what it was, to a tee. Upvote.

[–]leftlooserighttight 0 points1 point ago

what the fuck is a bike marathon....

[–]oliilo1 1 point2 points ago

What movie is this GIF from?

[–]Jesterfellah 2 points3 points ago

Well, it depends what kind of marathon. We just had RAGBRAI run through town and all we did was stand out there like it was a shitty parade (they didn't have candy...).

[–]EatSleepJeep 2 points3 points ago

But RAGBRAI riders have beer and temporary tattoos and beer and beer.

[–]Jesterfellah 1 point2 points ago

Not this year, most of them just wanted fucking water lol

[–]jenjabear 2 points3 points ago

I rode ragbrai this year and can confirm that I only wanted water. A fellow biker had a thermometer and the temp on the road was 130 degrees one day.

[–]keckbug 2 points3 points ago

Double confirmed. First time RAGBRAI rider this year, and it was brutally hot weather to be riding in. Stopped by 3 stands in a row that were completely sold out of water, and it seemed like paramedics passed at least once every other hour.

[–]liek_dis_if_u_cri 0 points1 point ago

Nice to see fellow Iowans around.

[–]Jesterfellah 0 points1 point ago

ever tim

[–]superuncle 0 points1 point ago

AHHH Y U NO SINK!!! I can't stand it any longer!! (pretty accurate on the marathon spectators though :-))

[–]FlushedDown 20 points21 points ago

This is true for time trials, but not a normal stage race.

[–]Nosirrom -2 points-1 points ago

Most mountain biking has this time trial type racing which you speak of. There are exceptions to this where there are huge masses of racers starting all at once. These big races are generally very long mountain biking races.

[–]kinboyatuwo 6 points7 points ago

Other way around. Mass starts in mountain biking are the norm. Spaced starts are the exception. Source: 14 years of MTB racing and 10 of road. I have races over 100 MTB races and only had 2 spaced start MTB races.

[–]Nosirrom 0 points1 point ago

What kind of mountain biking exactly? I watch a lot of races which take place on singletrack, specifically downhill.

[–]kinboyatuwo 2 points3 points ago

Down hill. Yes. Didn't even think that way. I race cross country. Good point. I guess it is the tv friendly MTB.

[–]LKS 0 points1 point ago

Imagine a mass start on a downhill mountain bike race :D. I would pay to watch that.

[–]kinboyatuwo 1 point2 points ago

[–]LKS 0 points1 point ago

Anything closer to my location? (Switzerland)

Whitstler Mountain is a bit too far :D.

[–]FlushedDown 2 points3 points ago

Oh, I thought we were talking about road racing. My bad.

[–]bnej 1 point2 points ago

I have been in dozens of MTB races and have never had a spaced start.

The enduro races tend to spread out into a long line pretty quickly but it's still a mass start even if it's single track course. You just have to sort it out between yourselves when it gets tight.

[–]Deluminati 0 points1 point ago

Pretty much. I watched my uncle do a half iron man. I saw him maybe twice throughout the whole day. Or so I thought, all of them looked the same in their biking suits and helmets. Lol

[–]FISH_MASTER -1 points0 points ago

As someone who watched both the olympic road races live....pretty much this

i saw the bikes for a combined total of 10 seconds

[–][deleted] -5 points-4 points ago

Repost.

[–]TriangleJeff -5 points-4 points ago

This is how I feel about it being my cake day.
