This is a rehosted webcomic that utilizes the stereotype of "Jewish people are stingy" for humorous effect. What the hell does that have to do with atheism.

[–]ActuallyIsPatrick 267 points268 points ago

Karmaaaaaa

[–]pants6000 6 points7 points ago

Yes, have some.

[–]Amytherocklobster 5 points6 points ago

Mr homolka stop eating my sesame cake.

[–]corporeal-entity 19 points20 points ago

What the hell does that have to do with atheism.

I finally gave up. This isn't a subreddit about atheism anymore. This is a subreddit full of atheists that talk about things tenuously related to religion, or civil rights issues that religious groups vocally oppose.

The only thing this has to do with atheism is probably that an atheist posted the picture.

But I'm not even sure about that.

[–]steviemcfly 2 points3 points ago

/r/TrueAtheism is awesome. It's what this place was like before dipshits ruined it.

[–]corporeal-entity 1 point2 points ago

Tell me about it. I have a 5 year badge on my other account. I remember what it was like.

[–]Tacota 46 points47 points ago

Cause the majority of the people in this subreddit just think Atheism is about making fun of other religions. No disrespect to atheists, but this place is just full of people who are jumping on a bandwagon that they don't even understand because they are growing and don't know where they want to belong. Thus, the resulting image of the large group (r/atheism) is fucked up.

[–]Disco_Panda -4 points-3 points ago

No disrespect to atheists, but this place is just full of people who are jumping on a bandwagon that they don't even understand because they are growing and don't know where they want to belong.

Why would anyone take disrespect from that? It's not like it's a gross generalization or anything...

EDIT: This may have been too-thinly veiled sarcasm. If you're starting a post with "No offense, but..." you're probably causing someone some offense. Showing that you know what you're doing shouldn't give you a pass, it probably should make it worse.

[–]Tacota 11 points12 points ago

Some people might take it that way, ya never know. "Oh man, he's saying crap about r/atheism... he's saying crap about atheism!" To some people, I'm sure "r/atheism" is their "atheism".

[–]nametheoccupation 0 points1 point ago

[–]Tacota 0 points1 point ago

That's not what I said though. I meant no disrespect to atheists, but I did mean disrespect to r/atheism. I get what you're saying though an it is true, but it only would have applied if I said, "No disrespect to r/atheism, but..."

Want people to make sure I was only directing the statement to the subreddit.

[–]hoodie92 77 points78 points ago

I was gonna say. It's a funny joke, and one that has fuck all to do with atheism.

Considering that there are many children of Jewish people who are atheists, but still identify themselves as Jews and keep dietary laws out of tradition (myself being one of them), I'd say that this has even less to do with atheism.

[–]shelbyvillian 0 points1 point ago

How hardcore? Just no shellfish and pork or do you only eat products with a hecksher?

[–]hoodie92 7 points8 points ago

Well I used to only eat kosher meat about 2 years ago. Now I'll eat any meat but rarely pork and never shellfish. Don't care as much as I used to but I still like the traditions and stuff.

[–]thebutcherswife -2 points-1 points ago

Internet high five for same situation!

[–]aroogu -2 points-1 points ago

As a card carrying member of Jews For Bacon & Chief Liaison to Hindus For Bacon, I approve this message.

[–]Babkock 20 points21 points ago

Thank. You. This sub needs stricter mods.

[–]forseriousyouguys 18 points19 points ago

Or fewer douchey teenagers.

[–]Brando2600 3 points4 points ago

Second.

[–]idonotcollectstamps 6 points7 points ago

OH but if it was a fucking CHIK-FIL-A protest you faggots would be rubbing your aids cocks ALL OVER IT!

[–]arstin 4 points5 points ago

| What the hell does that have to do with atheism.

This isn't atheism, it's r/atheism. Insulting religion is always on topic.

[–]koavf 11 points12 points ago

This isn't even insulting religion, though.

[–]rAtheismSelfPostOnly 4 points5 points ago

Obviously this subreddit isn't about just atheism. It's about whatever the hell atheists want.

[–]MxM111 1 point2 points ago

Who said it has everything to do with atheism? It has everything to do with r/atheism, which is completely different entity. Did you check it lately? It is nearly completely irrelevant to atheism.

[–]Tm0 3 points4 points ago

Can't the mods do something about this!

[–]URETHAL_SHITFUCK 0 points1 point ago

This exact comic has also been reposted at least 10 times before.

[–]KingContext -1 points0 points ago

What the hell does that have to do with atheism.

FYI, questions are punctuated by a "question mark". Like this: ?

Now you know. No more looking like a fool for you!

[–]RobertTheSpruce -1 points0 points ago

Because making fun of religious people guilt free is part of being an atheist.

[–]Mumberthrax 7 points8 points ago

So if many Mexicans are Catholic, then it's okay to post racist stuff against Mexicans because many of them are Catholic - even if the racist joke is not relating to their religion?

[–]RobertTheSpruce -5 points-4 points ago

I couldn't give a shit who you make fun of.

[–]WhereAreMyVirgins -1 points0 points ago

AND it's a repost from, I believe, /r/funny. And not even a recent one.

[–]Menolith 77 points78 points ago

Try /r/funny. This has absolutely nothing to do with atheism, even by r/atheism standards.

[–]partyxday 26 points27 points ago

YET IT STILL GETS FRONT PAGE.

[–]Brohanwashere 4 points5 points ago

I feel like the people that comment on these things actually have sense, but the people that vote are idiots.

[–]lovesmasher 5 points6 points ago

It's got absolutely nothing to do with funny either.

[–]ahaltingmachine 47 points48 points ago

Which is why it's perfect for /r/funny.

[–]squigs 7 points8 points ago

Doh! Now I get it! /r/funny is about nothing to do with funny, /r/atheism is about nothing to do with atheism. /r/askreddit is about answering, /r/iama is about people who are just pretending to be a whatever. The subreddits are about anything but the topic!

[–]imrickjamesbyach 4 points5 points ago

/r/askreddit is about answering

Nope, it's about humorous to semi-humorous fake anecdotes.

[–]KingContext 0 points1 point ago

[–]Daemonicus 123 points124 points ago

So...

  1. This has nothing to do with atheism.

  2. This perpetuates a false stereotype.

  3. Are you going to start posting how Southern Baptists who happen to be black, love watermelon?

[–]MegaAtheist 0 points1 point ago

Maybe he was telling him it was free because it was a shabbat and he happened to know that jews aren't allowed to partake in monetary exchanges on the sabbath.

[–]_kst_ 110 points111 points ago

Here's a link to the cartoon on the artist's web site, for those of you who care about giving proper credit and letting cartoonists earn some money from their work.

[–]valleyshrew 17 points18 points ago

Why would anyone want to give money to someone for a lazy Jew joke that took 1 minute to make? I'm not offended, I just prefer jokes to be creative and original...

[–]Bakyra 4 points5 points ago

I always link to C&H, but i'd prefer if they let you thumbnail the comic instead of a generic icon. People never click generic icons. I think that's the main reason people dont link directly to C&H.

[–]Phallic 3 points4 points ago

I even clicked an ad! Super easy and someone actually gets money for entertaining me, and all I had to do was click on some shit I closed straight after!

[–]ilikepamela 0 points1 point ago

For a website as big as that one, it might not be an issue, but with Google ads, when there are invalid clicks they can go as far as ban you and that's the last thing you want for your website. Everytime someone offers me to click an ad on my site I refuse for that matter because I've seen so many people being banned only because their friends and family decided to "help out".

But like I said I don't think it matters for that site since it's so big.

[–]MyUncleFuckedMe -2 points-1 points ago

I always click these links, but does it still pay out if I have adblock on?

[–]Skrim 4 points5 points ago

You could set up adblock to show ads on those pages.

[–]solarspeed 2 points3 points ago

Most probably, not.

[–]UndeadMantis 0 points1 point ago

Webcomic creators are able to sell advertising space for certain prices based on the statistics of their pageviews/unique visitors. By going to the site, you contribute to those statistics, thereby making their site more valuable and more profitable for the site owners. Adblock shouldn't, in theory, directly affect those numbers.

[–]sheitstrom 0 points1 point ago

No. Their stats are based on the count the ad broker computes (adense, whomever). When the ad doesn't load, it is as if that person never visited the site (although they still use up the site's bandwidth).

Some huge aggregator type sites have different agreements, but it is rare.

[–]UndeadMantis 0 points1 point ago

Ah. My mistake. Smart advertisers. Good to know.

[–]Nikashi 139 points140 points ago

Hey awesome! Let's make fun of a cultural (not religious) stereotype in our 'we just don't believe in god, that's all' subreddit, in a fairly straight up bigoted way.

What the fuck is wrong with this subreddit lately, mods, can you please start doing something about all the constant posting of straight up unconstructive religion bashing, and hell, in this case plain old racism?

[–]koopaatroopa 36 points37 points ago

FUCK. THIS. SUBREDDIT.

What the fuck is wrong with you people??! I'm so glad to see all the comment rationally looking at what this is, but why the fuck does it have all of these upvotes in the first place?

In a non-religious use of the word, this is EVIL. (not the original comic, which is cheeky at its worse, but the context in which the OP is using it).

Seriously. You fucking idiots have a circle jerking tea party going in here and you actually proudly associate yourselves with it.

You opened your eyes to skepticism once before when leaving religion. Now do it once more and see the waste-water subreddit your proudly swimming in.

[–]ITellAtheistsCSB 33 points34 points ago

The rules of this sub reddit need a serious look at. Also they need to be enforced. Stop rehosting comics!

[–]keyree 11 points12 points ago

Jesus fucking Christ. Even by our standards this is pretty bad.

[–]shipssinklooselips 4 points5 points ago

[–]koavf 3 points4 points ago

This has nothing to do with atheism.

[–]LandSharkLandShark 3 points4 points ago

Who the fuck walks around with a plate of shrimp.

Sketchy shrimp guy is sketchy.

[–]Deep_Beige 31 points32 points ago

Haha, Racism!

[–]Trickster174 12 points13 points ago

Grew up Jewish. Atheist now. Dumb stereotype is dumb.

[–]Feinberg 17 points18 points ago

You're just kinda posting stuff wherever you think you can squeeze some karma from it, huh?

[–]patsmith 13 points14 points ago

This has nothing to do with Atheism. It's not funny. It's just straight up anti-Semitic.

JL_Silva is a spammer, look at his link karma (13100) compared to his comment karma (216) and he's only been a member 5 months.

He already posted this to /r/funny before he posted it here and it only got +67.

[–]CosmicBard 5 points6 points ago

Well?

C'mon OP.

Post a comment.

We're waiting.

You need to explain why this is in r/atheism.

[–]TybaltCapulet 16 points17 points ago

I have no problem with the humour of the comic, its the fact its been posted in /r/atheism i have a problem with.

You're basically connecting the same old racist attitudes and using the excuse that the person is religious to cover it up. Well done dickheads.

[–]DeadHead13087 8 points9 points ago

This is very anti-semitic

[–]CosmicBard 3 points4 points ago

Nothing to do with atheism.

[–]asdfcrow 6 points7 points ago

What does this have to do with Atheism?

[–]thekiddyfiddler 8 points9 points ago

Thats it, i'm done with this sub reddit.

[–]minizanz 7 points8 points ago

i'm going to pistol whip the next person who posts thees shenanigans. seriously this hits near the front page of /all more than once a day and has for a long while.

[–]CommanderShep 2 points3 points ago

r atheism facing controversy over being immature dickheads?obviously it should put (at least slightly) racist/intolerant shit on the front page.Seriously, can't we have intelligent discussions on facts?isnt that what most atheists (myself included) say they do???

[–]RightWingWrite 2 points3 points ago

Reddit logic: Bigotry is fine as long as it isn't directed towards gays, atheists or muslims!

[–]Rnorman3 4 points5 points ago

The former basketball coach for my university (Bruce pearl) was Jewish and there was a film crew with the team for one of their events/trips to some out of town tournament. Anyway, there was a scene when he was at the hotel breakfast and he says "a Jews dilemma: free bacon" and I just lost it.

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

Don't rehost webcomics like a dick.

[–]MeowYouveDoneIt 0 points1 point ago

Oh I see, Atheism is synonymous with bigotry. Oh wait, what else explains this found here? Karmawhoring. That is all

[–]gazoogle 2 points3 points ago

Sweet baby jesus, this thread has lots of stupid in it. The comic is not using a stereotype to make fun of Jewish people, it is making fun of people that stereotype.

See another example http://www.explosm.net/comics/1979/

[–]gazoogle 1 point2 points ago

You are really asking this, or you're being sarcastic?

[–]suburbanhero22 2 points3 points ago

Is rehosting C&H comics on reddit the new thing to do because I swear I've seen at least 4 or 5 in the last couple days. How hard is it to just link to the site?

[–]m1keyn 0 points1 point ago

Clicked on comments hoping to regain some respect for Reddit. Left satisfied.

[–]rahtin 1 point2 points ago

I want everyone to remember this next time there is "outrage" over a racist joke made by a comedian.

This is an example of "racial humour."

Some people will find this offensive. That's OK. It's alright to be offended. If you don't like it, you can move on, maybe even shoot them an email saying it was offensive and give them a high and hearty 'go fuck your mother' while you're at it.

This kind of humour is OK. There is no hate. The intent is comedy.

If instead of shrimp it was fried chicken, it would still be OK. Take the stick out of your patooty (pardon my language) and laugh, or move on.

[–]kzielinski 0 points1 point ago

I can't eat that. There's no mustard.

[–]Snickersthecat 1 point2 points ago

I don't care if it has anything to do with atheism, I just about died laughing from this.

[–]Ragnar_OK -1 points0 points ago

r/atheism? I think you meant to go to /r/acism.

[–]Lots42 1 point2 points ago

Well, at least you pissed off /r/shitredditsays so you got that going for you.

[–]drneanderthal 1 point2 points ago

WHY IS THIS HERE

[–]Lots42 0 points1 point ago

My guess; rampant idiocy.

[–]bubbs5 0 points1 point ago

I fucking hate people like you, just fucking link it the explosm to give them the credit.

[–]salvu667 -1 points0 points ago

well in that case...

[–]FireReadyAim 1 point2 points ago

fuck you rehosting scum.

[–]canondocre 1 point2 points ago

this isn't even funny, and I do like myself a good jew joke.

[–]batmanmilktruck -1 points0 points ago

im a jew and this is just lazy. i mean come on, oh its the cheap stereotype again! everyones done this a million times and it just isn't funny. i mean do a good one about how we always are complaining and arguing, those are actually pretty true stereotypes. we can't agree on anything. or jewish mothers, the horror. i can appreciate a good jewish joke if its good and original.

[–]canondocre 0 points1 point ago

my gf lives with a jewish lit student his self-deprecating humor has really raised the bar for me as far as which "jew jokes" I find funny.

[–]Electric_Ladykiller -4 points-3 points ago

Saving this for later to show my Jewish friends.

[–]reddit_user13 -1 points0 points ago

Ahhh... the Jewish dilemma: free shrimp.

[–]prezpwns 1 point2 points ago

dammit, I went to yawn but this made me laugh. It came out as a weird, throat-y handicapped laugh. all at my quiet office at work.

[–]destrolaminar -1 points0 points ago

I don't care whether or not this belongs in r/atheism, but I think everyone who thinks this is racist/anti-semitic/bigoted etc. is missing the joke.

I interpreted the comic as making fun of the character who is so stupid/ignorant that he thinks the only reason a Jewish person wouldn't want something is if they have to pay for it. I feel like you even get that from the cartoonish facial expressions. The Jewish character has a very friendly smile and the other character just seems stupid.

I think you also have to understand how a lot of the Cyanide and Happiness comics work, especially those by Rob who I think did this. The humor in the comics often derives from a character taking something too literally, or fundamentally misunderstanding something.

Comedy often references stereotypes or talks about taboo things, but I think that the intent is really important. If the intent is to demean and make fun of a group of people, especially people who socially are less powerful, then I think this is wrong. But I don't think the joke is making fun of Jews by saying that they are cheap, it's making of the other character. The Jewish character does not actually exhibit any stereotypes.

[–]Wonderloaf -2 points-1 points ago

Hmm, this has nothing to do with religion, it is just racism.

[–]ussr577 0 points1 point ago

Atheism isn't believing in the non-existence of something. The positive belief in the non-existence of a god is a Christian construct. Thanks, Noah Webster.

All faiths are equally bullshit. Some are less dangerous and some are just less dangerous at the time.

What this 'joke' does is insult a culture, not a faith. It's not like Jews are stereotyped as cheap because the Torah says to be cheap. I'd have no problem ridiculing that bullshit. If anything, the stereotype of Jews being cheap is rooted in Christian belief. According to Wikipedia "Jews have often been stereotyped as greedy and money-mad. This originates in the Middle Ages, when the Church forbade Christians to lend money while charging interest (a practice called usury, although the word later took on the meaning of charging excessive interest). Jews were legally restricted to occupations as usurers, usually to Christians, and thus many went into money-lending. This led to, through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the association of Jews with greedy practices."

That said, you seem like a total asshole anyway, and we'd be better off without you. Don't let the door hit you where the universe split you.

[–]d3s7iny -4 points-3 points ago

Look its a funny little joke and it is related to religion. Quit getting butt hurt when things are posted in /r/atheism. Yeah people might be karma begging but so what.. People are up voting it for a reason.

tldr; Don't make it such a huge deal because it doesn't directly have to do with atheism.

[–]mamalujo 1 point2 points ago

Also - apparently an interesting (or, interesting to me) discussion developed up there about being an atheist jew and upholding the kosher diet and why. And relationship of an atheist to his/her culture and religion, esp when the two are so intertwined, seems to me very much on topic.

[–]Igosuki -5 points-4 points ago

A post that isn't about Christians ? Quick, bash that mofo !

[–]purplepeach 0 points1 point ago

Rehosts are bad and you should feel bad.

[–]Bio_Hazardous 0 points1 point ago

I'm not even Jewish though.

[–]Amryxx 0 points1 point ago

Hehe... I chuckled. Good one, r/atheism.

(no sarcasm meant)

[–]Sdingel 0 points1 point ago

Oh get over yourselves it's funny.
