10 years of therapy wasted on clicking this link.

[–]SyrupLicker 115 points116 points ago

Saw the movie in 3rd grade, scared me shitless.

Decided that, by 10th grade, there's no way some story about a clown could creep me out, and decided to read the book. Scared of balloons, photographs, sewer grates, and abandoned houses for the next 3 years.

[–]mizike 47 points48 points ago

Watch it as an adult, it's terrible. Like not even "so good that it's bad", just straight up awful. Pennywise, the one redeeming feature of the movie, has like 5 minutes of screen time in the 3+ hour long movie and all of the main characters are unbelievably obnoxious. Harry Anderson in particular just chews the scenery with an unending stream of corny jokes.

[–]skwirrlmaster 34 points35 points ago

The book however is fantastic.

King is just generally bad with endings. The Stand has a bad ending... The Dark Tower has a "Really... REALLY... WTF?!!!!!!? I JUST SPENT 20 years engrossed in this series for THIS?!!?!?!?!?!??1!!!!" ending. IT's ending is actually alright by comparison.

[–]Reptarftw 9 points10 points ago

This. I think a lot of people just have scarred memories seeing Pennywise as a kid and not putting the ridiculousness of the acting, writing, etc. in context...which makes him a lot less scarier, and drowned out by the complete awfulness that is everything besides Tim Curry's performance.

[–]Killer_Brig 4 points5 points ago

Tim Curry always has an amazing performance. See Clue the movie.

The ability to fall asleep for the next 10 hours gone because of clicking this link.

Sorry, I'm late.

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 51 points52 points ago

A wizard is never late, not are they early. They arrive precisely when they mean to.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

Pennywise the White? That shit would fuck up my mind forever.

[–]Ellyzia 7 points8 points ago

Would have no idea what that's from if it weren't for the wonderful username.

[–]I_decide_up_or_down 13 points14 points ago

You son of a bitch, why?

[–]Macaframa 2 points3 points ago

did anyone else read it in the clown's voice? shudders

[–]filmfiend999 105 points106 points ago

I lost many hours of sleep when I read IT, especially because I was the same age as the cast of The Loser's Club. Being terrified yet unable to put it down... so great.

IT's no wonder that Reddit is such a huge Stephen King fan.

[–]WalrusTits 21 points22 points ago

I haven't found a movie that scares me as much as reading a paragraph chosen at random from that book often does.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points ago

They ALL vote down here. When you're down here with us, you'll vote too!

[–]Reptarftw 14 points15 points ago

Then you learned the secret to battling any evil at that age is massive orgy.

[–]killskerry 10 points11 points ago

I'm glad somebody pointed this out in this thread. I loved the book until that part then I just got really pissed. I mean we have this girl that its hinted is suffering sexual abuse and then it turns out shes on the team just to SCREW EVERYBODY ELSE? The ONLY girl on the team and that's her job? FANTASTIC.

I was so mad I almost didn't make it to the giant cosmic turtle.

[–]th3_m3ss3ng3r 77 points78 points ago

"read IT" I see what you did there

[–]Robelius 24 points25 points ago

Didn't notice until you pointed it out ಠ_ಠ

[–]guesto 11 points12 points ago

To this day, every time I take a shower I still double check the drain. I saw the movie when I was 5 and had to shower with the door and curtain open for a long time thnx to that shower scene. I don't even recall when that stopped, but it did eventually.

[–]hypertown 7 points8 points ago

The whole world is a huge Stephen King fan. Especially Maine.

[–]MPKFA 5 points6 points ago

Yup, read it for the first time in the 6th grade and have reread it once a year since. Such a fantastic book. The amount of detail is staggering.

Are you me, by chance?

[–]Ettiow 173 points174 points ago

Had nightmares for years from that movie ...

[–]Allurex 145 points146 points ago

You should read the book. This isn't one of those 'book is better than the movie spiels', the book is legitimately terrifying.

[–]iamtheowlman 52 points53 points ago

Only book to literally scare me shitless. I didn't poop for 2 days after finishing it.

I was 17.

[–]glitchx 16 points17 points ago

I just started reading it two days ago. I'm about a fifth of the way through it. I swear I've been starting to see shit out of the corner of my eye. Shadowy figures and what not. Today I could have sworn I heard a child laughing. And that's only after reading the first 200 or so pages.

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 35 points36 points ago

Thank you for giving me some insight. I will not read this book.

[–]Tuskinton 4 points5 points ago

Twist, the shadows are your own children, and the laughs are them enjoying themselves while you drift down into a spiral of madness, you view of reality twisting and changing by the second. Too you this comment at this moment only looks like something convincing you to kill your family.

[–]Theolore 2 points3 points ago

Oh shit, I've been seeing the same thi

[–]jcmc2112 88 points89 points ago

Considering the movie traumatized me as a child, I don't think I'll be reading that book any time soon :)

[–]HITMAN616 22 points23 points ago

Still haven't seen it. What's so bad about it?

[–]jcmc2112 52 points53 points ago

Watch this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPdDdC4go6c

Note: I was a little kid when I saw this.

[–]yellowpride 46 points47 points ago

The clown's delivery is so good and terrifying.

[–]katsuya_kaiba 68 points69 points ago

That clown is Tim Curry.

[–]thesuspiciousone 69 points70 points ago

Fun fact: Tim Curry auditioned for the voice of the Joker in Batman: The Animated Series. Paul Dini and Bruce Timm decided against him because they found his Joker impression too terrifying.

[–]Insignificant_Being 11 points12 points ago

Make this a TIL and reap the karma!

[–]thesuspiciousone 4 points5 points ago

Sigh... if I had a nickel for every time I saw some obscure piece of TIL comic book trivia that I had known for years make the front page, I'd be rich.

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 24 points25 points ago

[–]jcmc2112 4 points5 points ago

I remember him most for his role in Annie :)

[–]Dildo_Ball_Baggins 3 points4 points ago

[–]mrsammercer 6 points7 points ago

[–]thepikey7 29 points30 points ago

Yeah and then movie was ruined because - stupid spider... Pennywise was horrifying, why fuck with that?

[–]ohgoddontdoit 14 points15 points ago

Same lame ending as the book. Turns out the horrifying clown was an outer space spider or some such crap like that.

[–]midwestredditor 17 points18 points ago

Well, more "trans-dimensional horror that your mind can't interpret" sort of thing. Still odd, though.

[–]quinzilli 12 points13 points ago

So like Giygas from Earthbound? :p

Also, RES says your post is 6 minutes old but the one you're replying to is only 4. Huh.

[–]uncoolaidman 15 points16 points ago

Tim Curry, man. For being Nigel Thornberry, he has a knack for terrifying children.

[–]Strangely_Calm 8 points9 points ago

Nuyeaghhyeaaghhyeaaghhhh.

[–]boldface_bastard 4 points5 points ago

He's just a sweet transvestite.

[–]HITMAN616 12 points13 points ago

Oh my god. The ending to that clip...

[–]meghatron500 8 points9 points ago

Wow, thank you for terrifying me for the night. I went all my life avoiding watching this movie. I've seen so many horror movies and never found them scary, but that tiny clip miiiight have just made me pee a little bit.. ):

[–]PetrichorNights 15 points16 points ago

I remember reading it but I don't remember many of the details that weren't in the movie. Well, except for something about a boiler or factory exploding with a bunch of kids in it, sending parts flying everywhere. As a whole it was damned disturbing. "We all float down here..."

[–]DoorGuote 11 points12 points ago

The gangbang of Beverly?

[–]SyrupLicker 7 points8 points ago

Steven King is definately a bit fucked in the head. The gangbang of beverly, the homo-erotic bullies, the guy beating his kid to death with a hammer, all sorts of disturbing shit that aren't really necessary to the story just thrown in there. It's the same with every other King book.

[–]Locke57 17 points18 points ago

Clowns consuming kids in the sewers, and rape might never have been mentioned but you bet your fucking ass pennywise fucked some ass in that book, just to hear them squeal. Fuck that book is messed up.

[–]ElGoddamnDorado 12 points13 points ago

Oh man I'm so getting this book. A good novel-induced terrifrightmare would be just what I'm looking for.

[–]welltheresAbacon 5 points6 points ago

Just because of your comment, I might read it. Why is it so terrifying?

[–]Allurex 8 points9 points ago

King has quite the way with words. They say the mark of a good story or storyteller is the ability to make the readers (or viewers for a movie) to feel emotion. Whether that emotion be joy, laughter, sadness, or in this case, Fear.

[–]jv13hi 8 points9 points ago

It is just... Brutal. The innocence of a group of kids trying to stop a powerful demonic shape-shifter that slaughters children is crazy.

[–]Ettiow 7 points8 points ago

Yes as I got older I did. You are correct terrifying. A 23 year old shouldn't be afraid to go to sleep.

[–]ue85 6 points7 points ago

[–]DextrosKnight 18 points19 points ago

the book is legitimately boring. I've read a bunch of King's stuff, and It just does absolutely nothing for me.

[–]original_evanator 56 points57 points ago

I respect the stand you're taking.

[–]userbelowisamonster 39 points40 points ago

I have globophobia. The clown didn't bother me. It was the balloons in the library that did me in.

I used to walk home from school when I was young. It took me a while but I ended up making a path to avoid all the drains. I still feel uncomfortable around them but not scared.

[–]dcmjim 34 points35 points ago

Fuck that, I couldn't put my feet anywhere near the shower drain for years, and I would keep my eyes on it the entire time getting into and out of the shower.

My greatest fear for 10 years was that Tim Curry would crawl out of my shower drain and feast on my feet.

[–]Contradiction11 33 points34 points ago

Fucking this. Fuck shower drains and drains of all kinds. If anything falls on the floor of my shower it may as well have fallen in the Mariana Trench.

[–]marcel87 17 points18 points ago

Next time, just think about how unlikely it is for something to come up from there. Then use your hands and fingers and feel around the drain. Nothing happens! Everything will feelgoodman.jpeg :)

[–]aliencat1001 31 points32 points ago

Nice try, Pennywise.

[–]The_Real_Cats_Eye 7 points8 points ago

and then it happens...

and then IT happens...

[–]online222222 8 points9 points ago

I swear to god if I saw a clown in a drain like that today, I'd shit my pants, scream my head off, and run like hell. It's freaking me out right now thinking about it.

[–]Ettiow 6 points7 points ago

Haha I would probably too. My daughter doesn't understand why we walk around storm drains. She thinks they are exciting but I'm slightly terrified.

[–]spgtothemax 2 points3 points ago

What's it about?

[–]sje46 3 points4 points ago

It's about a town called Derry Maine which has this....thing that attracts and kills children. It begins in the 50s and is about 8 or so children who are generally outcasts at school for various reasons. They become friends and figure out the thing that has been stalking and killing children is a supernatural entity that can change its appearance to specifically terrify kids, and it comes back in cycles of approximately 30 years. They had a run-in with "It" and promised that if It ever comes back, they would all go back to Derry and take It on and kill It. The book alternately chronicles the kids' experiences in the fifties, and the adults experiences in the 80s when they travel back to Derry to kill It.

It's also really really good.

[–]melissaur1039 4 points5 points ago

After I watched the movie, I was ridiculously paranoid about going to the bathroom for anything. The first thing I would do is check my sink for spiders or blood, and behind my shower curtain. I would have to monitor the inside of the toilet as I did my business. I had to run out of my bathroom immediately as I flushed the toilet, and I would sneak back in a few minutes later to wash my hands, and never stopped my eyes from scanning the sink/toilet/mirror.

[–]filmfiend999 5 points6 points ago

awesome... I WORRY A LOT, BEVVIE!

[–]Contradiction11 24 points25 points ago

So I read this book in about 10th grade, liked it, no biggie. Had read many other Stephen King's and enjoyed them. Then this movie comes out and Tim Curry's eyes and odd mannerisms made it all alive and concrete to me. So many scenes from the movie gave me that deep gut fear for a while. Cue about 10 years later I'm working in a bar on Halloween and some motherfucker walks in with a spitting image Pennywise costume on. He comes up to the bar and his friend (I forget the friend really because I was fixated/deer-in-headlights-terrified-a-little of Pennywise) orders his drink. I would have been fine with it but the motherfucker never talked and never changed facial expression, just stared ahead blankly. I was uncomfortable until he left. Typing this brought it back a little.

[–]rossiohead[!] 6 points7 points ago

Don't look behind you.

3 days ago I walk into my living room blazed and my roommate is watching this scene. Then he started imitating Pennywise and terrifying me for a good 30 minutes. He had me thoroughly convinced that his human body "is not his real form" and that he would show me his true form when I was least expecting it.

[–]TrillionsOfTrichs 2 points3 points ago

I had a roommate who was scared of Pennywise. I worked at a grocery store at the time so every once in a while I would get a single red balloon from the floral dept. I would put them various places where he would find them(drawers, closets, fridge, foot of his bed,his car)

In retrospect it was a dick move but there was a lot of trolling going on so I got my fair share of abuse. -Mike Hanlin

Though he was scary as fuck in Fern Gully.
