Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Source - http://celebnews-com.blogspot.com/2011/02/meet-enal-little-boy-whose-favourite.html

(I'm on my phone -- there's probably a better link out there, but this one will clue you in.)

[–]vierce 13 points14 points ago

Wow I had no idea that there were people that spent literally their entire lives living on the ocean. That's actually really bad-ass.

[–]DrSmoke 15 points16 points ago

You should watch the BBC series Human Planet. Each episode is; The desert, forest, oceans, etc.

Edit: Here is the part about these people. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_FUlHngPqQ&feature=related

[–]splatterdash 9 points10 points ago

Hunting 20 metres underwater while holding his breath for more than 2.5 minutes.

Holy crap that's awesome.

[–]too_many_secrets 2 points3 points ago

It's easier the farther you go down. Much easier to hold your breath at 50 feet than 5 feet. (I said just 50 because that's the farthest I've been down...)

[–]Kevtron 1 point2 points ago

True. Your partial pressure of O2 is higher at depth. And, of course, MDR kicks in. But then you come up, and have to worry about shallow water blackout.

/r/freediving

[–]too_many_secrets 0 points1 point ago

Oh yeah, coming up just sucks. heh At depth "Hmm...I need air. I should probably head up." As you near the top "Oh god I'm going to drown!"

[–]kingoftown 2 points3 points ago

Back when I was younger, spending every day at the local pool, all I would do is see how far I could swim with one breath. I finally made it from one side to the other (50m). But I wouldn't stop at 1 lap. If I push off really hard, I can get another 15 meters! I kept going.

By the end of the summer, I could go barely 3 laps underwater holding my breath for a little over 2 minutes.

I could dominate the "hold your breath underwater" game :)

Now I'd be lucky if I could swim 10 ft in one breath... :(

[–]CSRazor 1 point2 points ago

This is very dangerous, do not try it alone. If you black out, then it is end of you.

[–]kingoftown 1 point2 points ago

I was young. What kid worries about the dangers of doing things? That's part of being a kid!

[–]TheExiled 8 points9 points ago

There is a great documentary about this made in the 90s. I think it was called Waterworld or something...

[–]the_uncanny_valley 0 points1 point ago

I see what you did there.

[–]dakine_ 4 points5 points ago

Ready? Watch Mermaids: The Body Found.

Youll re evaluate humans as you know them for sure :)

[–]PaperRockBazooka 2 points3 points ago

One of the greatest scholarly works of all time

[–]dakine_ 0 points1 point ago

it encourages people to branch out and think outside the box and consider to research beyond what theyre told. No harm in that :)

[–]PaperRockBazooka 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps. Something to consider

[–]mizzmoxie 0 points1 point ago

Aquatic ape hypothesis.

[–]Kuama 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of the discovery channel special on mermaids and ho they could exist and be distant relatives of us.

[–]thatdudeus 3 points4 points ago

Now how do they live their entire lives at sea when a storm blows in?

The sea, she is a fickle mistress my friend.

[–]BenCelotil 4 points5 points ago

Simple.

They tie their boats together like a huge carpet, and just "roll" over the waves as though something is swimming underneath, rippling, going with the flow, and having a giggle when Little Epachu can fling fish heads at some guy who live across town, but is about ten feet away during a storm.

[–]tangentcosinesine 2 points3 points ago

Every time I see this picture, I think, 'Wow, the boy evolved the ability to breathe water.' NOW YOU ARE TELLING ME THERE IS AN ENTIRE COMMUNITY OF NOMADS WITH THIS ABILITY!

[–]Jigsus 0 points1 point ago

ah yes the modern world is encroaching on their way of life providing such horrible things like dive goggles that they all use and pants

[–]omegashadow 0 points1 point ago

When I looked it seemed they had made the goggles themselves carving them from wood and getting glass for the eyepieces. Also if you watch the documentary their eyes have adjusted to work pretty well underwater.

[–]Jigsus 1 point2 points ago

[–]mike9941 122 points123 points ago

And this is how a photograph of an 8 year old in is underwear ended up as the wallpaper on my PC.

[–]asstits 25 points26 points ago

Don't forget to mention the shark Mike.

[–]copyandpasta 63 points64 points ago

Isn't this part of the tournament for the Goblet of Fire?

Go Harry!

[–]EvilJohnCho 0 points1 point ago

I was going to say he looked an awful lot like Rajmaghandi Potter.

[–]shabufa 33 points34 points ago

i want those goggles

[–]DdCno1 7 points8 points ago

Here's a little documentary on the people this boy belongs to by the photographer behind this photo: http://jamesmorganphotography.co.uk/film/the-bajau-laut

[–]altification 0 points1 point ago

Cool video, but is that a kid in white shorts just hanging out deep in the dark ocean among the underwater plants while the others jump in for the camera? It's at about 1:53 and almost a little creepy the way the camera stops then pans/zooms to that location.

Linkage

[–]groo667 0 points1 point ago

Damn, that photographer got amazing shots and had a great opportunity to present these people and the issue at hand but instead he played a sound track over poorly presented data and didn't go into any good depth. I would have liked to know more about the people and their culture. I didn't need to see how the fish got to Hong Kong. I wanted to see the people living in the sea, and the issue could have been presented with focus on them, not the production line.

[–]BluShine 19 points20 points ago

Before today, the most popular post actually told you where the picture came from. What have we become...

[–]germandoorman 9 points10 points ago

and yet i´ve seen it today for the first time.

[–]mightycow 19 points20 points ago

How is that fish pulling the kid along when he's holding its tail?

[–]M5Phalanx 25 points26 points ago

The shark is using the kid as an extended tail.

[–]DrSmoke 1 point2 points ago

These people spend so much time in/on the water he can swim almost as well as it can.

[–]helldeath 9 points10 points ago

I'll leave this here http://james.photoshelter.com/

It's his pet shark btw.

[–]himurax3x 5 points6 points ago

[–]dietbroccoli 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, what did you expect?

[–]himurax3x 0 points1 point ago

I dont know i was 5.....

[–]WarPhalange 14 points15 points ago

wtf his mouth is open.

[–]Caeruleus127 38 points39 points ago

This is actually in space

[–]AngriestCosmonaut 6 points7 points ago

Oh, okay then.

[–]BenCelotil 24 points25 points ago

I can swim with my mouth open. It's just a case of closing off the back of the mouth and throat.

The more comments I read in this thread the more I wonder if no-one here but me has been in the ocean.

[–]hazleapricot 1 point2 points ago

He's lived on/in the ocean his whole life, I guess he's just used to it.

[–]Psionic_Flash 2 points3 points ago

Give us that, Déagol my love.

[–]Athene_Wins 1 point2 points ago

Watch out for its anal spine! Those things can mess you up

[–]Ali921 3 points4 points ago

And then he saw something shiny at the bottom of the river. As he moved towards the shinny object, he opened his hand and reached down and grabbed a handful of sand. Still not knowing what he saw, he swam up as fast as he could, still holding his breath. And then out of no where someone grabs his arm and pulls him out of the water. There he laid with the object of intrigue in his hand, sending pulses through his entire body. He turned his head, opened his hand and saw a shinny gold ring covered in sand and dirt.

[–]Ragequitington 0 points1 point ago

Smeagols birthday present.

[–]DrSmoke 0 points1 point ago

The kid is one of the Bajau (sp?).

They are more accustomed to life on the water, than land. To the point that some of them get "land sick".

Video from BBC. Human Planet, oceans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_FUlHngPqQ&feature=related

[–]GanasbinTagap 0 points1 point ago

Bajau. They live in the southern Philippines and in Sabah. That "land sick" statement is over exaggerated, while Bajau people are considered sea people, most of their villages are built on the shores.

[–]omegashadow 0 points1 point ago

Actually it is not. Sailors have reported serious problems with balance on land after being at see for extended periods. For those who have been their entire lives the little tubes in their ears might be adjusted to the rythmic motion and therefor the lack of that could result in motion sickness.

[–]GanasbinTagap 1 point2 points ago

I was saying that from first hand experience with my Bajau friends, most of whom now reside in the city.

[–]omegashadow 1 point2 points ago

I was saying that from zero first hand experience but from the perspective of some scientific reports on sailors. not sure whether it would apply to Bajau or how long the sickness would last.

[–]GanasbinTagap 0 points1 point ago

Ah I see, all good. Have an upvote :)

"Everything they need they get from the sea." Except diesel for their boats, and parts for the engine, and wood/metals to build their homes and boats and tools. And fresh water if it doesn't rain for a while. And the clothes they are wearing, and the glass for those goggles.

But yeah they sure do eat a lot of seafood. Uh-mazing.

TL;DR They do not sow. They pay the iron price for those boats and clothes, the drowned god provides the rest. What is dead may never die.

[–]Gfrisse1 0 points1 point ago

If he keeps it up, it may come as a rude shock to that youngster that the nurse shark he's hitching a ride on is so supple it can turn completely back on itself and bite him, even while he still has a firm grasp on its tail. On the upside, it only has small, dog like teeth, rather than the serrated, triangular meat shredders of a Great White, but it will still hurt and the many little gashes will probably require stitches to close. I've seen it happen in the Florida Keys.

[–]drsnafu -2 points-1 points ago

So sick of Reddit overusing the word 'just'. Why is 'just' in this sentence?

[–]mysticrudnin 0 points1 point ago

Not a native English speaker?

[–]drsnafu -2 points-1 points ago

Tell me which one of these definitions it's using: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/just

Most of the time when 'just' is used on Reddit, users are vaguely implying "only or merely" but some include the word for no other reason than to make it sound more casual.

'Some kids only grow up differently'? Is that the only difference?

OPs title suggests that there are no other differences in the children of the world.

The title makes more sense without it.

So, yes, I am a native English speaker.

[–]mysticrudnin 0 points1 point ago

but some include the word for no other reason than to make it sound more casual.

What's wrong with this? There are tons of words that only have the purpose of doing markings like this.

The "just" in this sentence has the effect of "There is no other explanation for this image other than the fact that:" and it doesn't have that effect without the word. The author intended for this effect and so he left the word in.

You can't just cite a dictionary and hope for the best. You know why "just" is in this sentence and just because it's your little pet peeve it doesn't mean that it doesn't belong.

[–]Offensive_Username2 -5 points-4 points ago

This is so old.
