The word is clearly being used in a way tha implies promiscuousness in a derogatory tone. Slut shaming does not merely involve insulting women who are open about enjoying sex, it also refers to insulting the way they dress/talk/act etc using the same language. In general, if you see the words 'slut', 'whore', 'skank', 'sket', 'ho' etc, then that is slut shaming. The fact that so many common female-specific insults are based on implying that they are sexually active reflects a deeply entrenched and disturbingly warped view of gender and sexuality which permeates society on a pretty fundamental level.

The fact that a word that referred to a woman reviled for her level of sexual activity has become the generic female insult is the problem here. The image refers to how the girls are dressed, so that is also obvious slut-shaming. You admitted that you didn't know anything about the issue, and asked what I assumed was an honest question, but then disputed the answer, which seems like unusual behaviour. Also, the vast majority of the time I hear the words whore, slut etc used it is a direct reference to sexual promiscuity, and in the few instances that it isn't, the only thing that makes the word insulting is the fact that everyone knows that definition.

I don't agree with what many SRS members often seem to suggest, that essentially you should know the entire etymology of every insult you use; I also acknowledge fully that the meanings of words change over time. However the meanings of these words have not changed. The common usage of all the words listed in my first post is to insult women based on their perceived sexual permissiveness.

TL;DR You are well aware that what you said is bull, stop trying to justify calling women whores.

I think the problem is twofold.

First, people can rightly feel that some of it is pandering to a community which prides itself with an almost insurmountable climate of one upping one another. People seen as poseurs, especially with regards to unplugged consoles, etc are treated harshly because the person is obviously not 'one of us'. Of course the only really legit people are people around the level of the viewer.

Secondly, the woman they are looking to date isn't just a nerd, but she's also smoking hot and, ideally, unaware of it. They have a fantasy of finding a 'diamond in the rough' who exhibits all of the positive traits they desire, without being like the outsiders. Exhibition implies awareness of your attractiveness, which means competition with out-group males, which is exactly what they are trying to avoid. A lot of slut shaming seems to come from a 'pearls before swine' mentality that overvalues sex and overpunishes those who are perceived to be cavalier with it (to others of course). I think this comes from a deprivation mindset where we overvalue things we don't have ready access to.

I think the reason some people might like this statement is because it could refer to the types of annoying girls who post pics of themselves all day on Facebook with duck faces and who normally don't wear glasses who suddenly put on a pair and think that qualifies them as "being nerdy" cuz they found glasses. Hot nerds are great, but a hot nerd will post her picture in costume or with her favorite book or in while holding the controller, not with a duck face and the first pair of glasses she's seen in her lifetime. Whether that was this statement's intention, who knows. But I think there are good reasons for up voting and down voting this and I think the internet needs to chill the fuck out. Yes there are pigs out there, but there are also annoying girls who aren't doing the rest of us girls any favors.
