I also unsubbed because it's become nothing but a circlejerk of memes, WBC bashing(which, while totally justified, gets old), and LGBT related content, which should belong elsewhere(Just to cover my ass, I don't hate LGBT). The mods need to step up and find a way to make the subreddit better.

No son, people are born with no knowledge of the concept of higher power. It's humans desire for explanation that lead to that. Nobody knows if there is a deity or not, nobody can ever know. Therefore you cannot be certain that there is or there is no god. Making both atheism and theism impossable.

There, I just bashed both sides of the spectrum.

I don't know why you were downvoted so much because you do make a valid point. I still believe everyone is born an atheist because they have no idea of a God; therefore they don't believe in one which, by definition, is atheism. Also the whole theory of "the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence" is complete bullshit and shouldn't even be seen as a legitimate or intelligent argument.

I myself, don't believe in God. Far too often are atheism, agnosticism and non-theism confused. They are all very different things.

Following your argument, yes when people are born they have no idea of God. Of course, however the problem we're running into here is a problem of definition. Use of the term atheism here would not be appropriate as atheism is the belief that there is no God (with absolute certainty, even the slightest shred of doubt would by detention make one agnostic). Likewise theism is often misused, as a shred of doubt would bring one into agnosticism.

When one is born they do not care for the concept of God, they know nothing of any deity, they have put no thought into it. They are in a sense completely detached from the conflict of opinions or the entire issue as a whole.

Atheism is the positive belief that a God does not exist, I don't really think in this context that is the appropriate term to use. Non-theist, essentially meaning "not a theist" is far more appropriate to use in this context.

Sorry to nitpick, what your saying is logical however the word atheism is thrown around too much.

I don't sub to /r/atheism, yet occasionally someone will cross post something from there to /r/skeptic, even when it's way off topic, for internet points.

When I've pointed out that Christianity bashing isn't the point of that subreddit, I've been told I'm pro censorship and discriminate against atheists, among other things.

Disbelief is a type of belief, and when people sharing that belief get together, they act like any group of humans sharing an ideology of some type do: they start spreading it and start being hostile towards those that they perceive to disagree with them. This eventually includes people who agree with them but push for the calmer course.

there are zealous factions in every large group. what you're saying is an obvious generalization. I understand what you mean, but it's the zealous that make the headlines. the rational atheists, like the rational of any group, are mostly undetected.

Yeah, that was my point, is that there are a lot of irrational atheists on here. I know there are rational ones too. There's plenty of rational, not overtly hostile ones, including me. I imagine the number of nonbelievers on reddit is far larger than the subcriber base for /r/atheism, because quite a few people are turned off by the entire Atheist crusader mentality.

I unsubbed because, while I agree with the fundamental ideology behind them (no God,) I strongly disagree with the venom and hatred lobbed at those who disagree. And it really grinds my gears when the venom I try to avoid starts popping up in other places.

So an atheist doesn't believe there is no god? Belief is a on off thing. If you believe, that would be a belief in the affirmative. Disbelief is simply belief in the negative (it doesn't exist.)

You're trying to use semantics to create an arbitrary separation, probably to try and take a high ground. The truth is, there really isn't one. Disbelievers, when in a group, act remarkably similar to believers in a group. (Hostility towards out group, irrational group hated towards all members of the perceived enemy out group, easier acceptance of information presented to the group that confirms suspicions held by the group with fewer checks to see if that information is good or bad, etc.) This is just basic group behavior and has to do with the humans that make the group, and nothing to do with how valid that group's beliefs are.

Believing in no god and not believing in a god are two completely different things. An atheist just has no belief in god, simply as that. No particular belief is required to be an atheist in that same way that I don't call you a believer in the non-existence of the flying-purple-monkey-dragon.

I'm not arguing whether atheists are hostile or not, although according to your logic that would mean most infants are hostile since they are atheists, I'm just pointing out that you have a very common fundamental misunderstanding about what atheism is.

Wouldn't be the first time. I do love watching atheists swarm around other atheists, lately it seems that not hanging on every word spoken by Ricky Gervais or Carl Sagan is sacrilegious, before it was Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. A lot of atheists seem to almost worship these people and will downvote anyone to shit if they say anything about these people. It seems like a lot of them seem to not quite understand that skepticism is the founding core of atheism, not bashing Christians. To me atheism is absolutely nothing more than an adjective for a lack of belief in a higher power, but to the vast majority of atheists I've seen on the internet, especially in recent years, it seems like atheists are treating atheism as if it's it's own religion, and there's certain things I'm apparently not allowed to say, such as that I think Ricky Gervais is a self-absorbed douchebag, apparently that opinion makes me guilty of blasphemy.
