WINDMILLS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY! GOOD NIGHT!

[–]EnsignRedshirt 5 points6 points ago

I was hoping this would be top comment. My reddit sense is strong today.

[–]Squirrelson 7 points8 points ago

What's this a reference to? Part of me wants to say Neopets, but the other part of me thinks part A is retarded.

[–]JBWill 14 points15 points ago

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQg8JKo_3ZQ

Futurama, Neopets, pretty much the same thing.

[–]railu 2 points3 points ago

same thing.

[–]richf2001 -2 points-1 points ago

[–]truthinlies 0 points1 point ago

NO ONE INSULTS THE TURTLES!

[–]vadergeek 0 points1 point ago

Futurama, but I think they referenced it in Neopets.

[–]ianianianianian5 3 points4 points ago

i work as a tour guide at a wind turbine. so many friggin' americans just don't understand. also, "whirly-gig" is not an acceptable substitute for turbine

[–]steamgifter001 12 points13 points ago

Americans realize that it's very wasteful to keep those things running. But where do you think WIND comes from, eh?

[–]Ramses3 7 points8 points ago

TIL wind turbine tours exist.

[–]Quiet_Robert 2 points3 points ago

Why is it that all the turbines turn clockwise?

[–]timetowastetime 4 points5 points ago

So they can tell the time... obviously.

[–]ianianianianian5 0 points1 point ago

they have to be designed to turn exclusively one direction because of the way their generators work, so i suppose why not clockwise? i think it's just something that's sort of happened over the years where most of them end up that way. oddly enough, the one i work at goes counter-clockwise.

[–]Quiet_Robert 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the reply. I figured it was something that simple but I guess I wanted to know for sure. Thanks!

[–]Endoman13 1 point2 points ago

As an American I'm curious, what aren't they understanding? The concept of wind energy itself?

[–]ianianianianian5 1 point2 points ago

they don't understand what it is, to put it bluntly. it's more common for people coming from certain states, but it's not exclusive to anywhere for them to just not understand that they're designed to create power.

[–]kakerules 2 points3 points ago

Finally thought I had a good response to something.
Screw you, sir.

[–]talldan 5 points6 points ago

I came to make his comment. Then realizing it was already taken. I was going to make your comment. Screw you, sir.

[–]Trombone_Hero92 0 points1 point ago

Wind TURBINE. Not WINDMILL. Windmills crush grain or pump water from the Earth. Wind Turbines create electricity.

[–]I_Pee_Sitting_Up -5 points-4 points ago

They don't really work at all....at least in terms of cost benefit. Such a wasteful endeavor. The only reason people like T Boone Pickens are so heavily invested is due to government subsidy. Any sane investor wouldn't look twice at a non-subsidized turbine farm. I love the idea and think that some day it might work, but the cost of materials and the lifetime energy utilization is far below the benefit derived from the same.

[–]VikingSlayer 4 points5 points ago

I dunno about the US, but in Denmark 19% of our power (in '08, it's risen since) was from windpower, the same percentage as gas (only counting electricity production)

[–]rylos 14 points15 points ago

Does Korea use windpower? Or are they afraid these will cause fan-death?

[–]Margrave 1 point2 points ago

Since windmills do not work that way, maybe they're afraid they'll cause fan-undeath?

[–]rylos 1 point2 points ago

So THAT'S what causes the zombie apocolypse! Never saw that coming...

[–]TaserMcThundercock 0 points1 point ago

No more homeless!

[–]jawapride 8 points9 points ago

Did anyone else know that describing someone as a "fan" is short for fanatic? That blew my mind.

[–]belflandluvr 3 points4 points ago

Goddamn am I stupid.

[–]AndyYankee17 0 points1 point ago

Not familiar with American (or any other dialect for that matter?) English?

[–]eliasp 4 points5 points ago

THIS is a big fan!

[–]calmdowngrandma 0 points1 point ago

ooh that picture gave me a reality check. love it

[–]jmorley14 5 points6 points ago

I don't understand, there are no fans in this picture.

[–]learntofart 2 points3 points ago

My favorite movie is called that: http://i.imgur.com/Oj7Xj.jpg

[–]zombiepie 1 point2 points ago

some fucking retarded people didn't just pass middle school

[–]sb490 3 points4 points ago

I build these.

[–]spottydogrunner 2 points3 points ago

I too build these. And I hate my job.

[–]sb490 2 points3 points ago

I'm a rigger, so technically I send these pieces up to be built. This is just a side project for me as I usually work Nuclear power plants, still fun though.

[–]spottydogrunner 3 points4 points ago

I'm a rigger/millwright. My job is to torque the flanges on those horrid machines. I work mostly coal burners.

[–]unbalanced_checkbook 2 points3 points ago

I literally build these. Well, the blades for them.

[–]totally_not_donny 4 points5 points ago

TIL a shit load of redditors work on wind turbines.

[–]bill_bigsby 0 points1 point ago

I am working on a wind project in North Dakota right now doing quality assurance. It kind of fucking blows. A really difficult and shitty job compared to the nuclear plant I just came from.

[–]unbalanced_checkbook 0 points1 point ago

Where at in NoDak? That's where I work at making the blades!

[–]bill_bigsby 0 points1 point ago

It's a little town called New Salem. The turbines are Siemens 3.0 MW direct drive. And that's pretty badass. Also, if you happen to know, what are the saw blades on the end for?

[–]Senor_Manos 0 points1 point ago

They wouldn't make any power if they didn't blow!

[–]bill_bigsby 0 points1 point ago

I like it. I will have to start saying that.

[–]DasGanon 0 points1 point ago

. . . You know you know too many racists when on first glance see the N word rather than Rigger.

I helped design plans for small ones for education and testing.

[–]ARC_Prisoner 0 points1 point ago

Wait, are you back to talking about wind turbines?

[–]DasGanon 0 points1 point ago

Yes. Although I have tried my hand at human genetic manipulation too, now that you mention it.

[–]stickmansgirl 0 points1 point ago

I read rigger incorrectly, and was horrible confused.

[–]sb490 0 points1 point ago

Haha. I posted a picture awhile back with a title that read "I'm a rigger" and many people did that.

[–]squidbill 1 point2 points ago

I'm going for "renewable energy technician" do you know how much those guys make? Is it just a fancy name for a repairman?

[–]sb490 2 points3 points ago

Do you know what a custodian is?

[–]squidbill 0 points1 point ago

So you're trying to say that I'll be nothing more than a janitor?

[–]amturbev 0 points1 point ago

~45-50k plus overtime, usually a fair amount of it. And yes, its repairs and routine service work.

[–]squidbill 0 points1 point ago

can you pull it off without a strong understanding of calculus?

[–]WeeblsLikePie 0 points1 point ago

I tell people where to put them.

[–]hansfriedee 0 points1 point ago

hey me too!

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

Repost.

[–]AndyYankee17 0 points1 point ago

Could you not apply electricity to it and turn that generator into a motor?

[–]myhandsarebananas 1 point2 points ago

Kind of, kind of not. A generator works by essentially turning loops of wire through a magnetic field, a motor works by creating a magnetic field with current that causes something to turn. (If I remember correctly). So it all really depends on what you can and cannot rotate or run current through.

[–]AndyYankee17 0 points1 point ago

I was under the impression that the difference between a generator and a motor was simply which way the torque and current was going.

[–]myhandsarebananas 1 point2 points ago

Well a generator works by turning a loop of wire through a magnetic field, that changes the "flux" or the amount of field that penetrates through the loop. The wire "doesn't like" this, so current starts flowing in a direction which creates a field that counteracts the changing flux.

A motor works by running alternating current through a wire loop inside a magnetic field. That will create a torque on the wire loop and turn it (or whatever it is attached to).

But the thing is, that's just an explanation of a simple isolated motor/generator, it doesn't mean any generator can be used like a motor and vice versa, although it doesn't mean they can't either.

[–]lotusflor0423 0 points1 point ago

I live by these and I think they're an eye sore.

[–]myhandsarebananas 1 point2 points ago

I'm waiting for the person who will say, "Well, technically that's not a fan, a fan is a blah blah blah blah, this is a turbine because blah blah blah blah."

[–]mamamaMONSTERJAMMM -1 points0 points ago

Windmill farms kill tens of thousands of birds a year

[–]zeds_dead187 0 points1 point ago

Coachella

[–]catlover67 0 points1 point ago

fans give wind energy using electricity. these windmills take wind energy and produce electricity. but i'm sure the wind doesn't effect weather. renewable energy!

[–]jmbond 0 points1 point ago

Opposite of a fan. Fan converts electrical energy to mechanical. Bad pun, you should feel bad.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

False. Windmills do not generate currents of air, they harness them. Therefore, they are not fans.

[–]khushi97 0 points1 point ago

Retoast

[–]ProfessorMcHugeBalls 0 points1 point ago

Well that wasn't advice at all!

[–]Icanus 0 points1 point ago

yeah, windmills, awesome.
Oops, no wind, turn of the lights guys!

I feel terribly that nobody responded to your post. Surely you are aware that petroleum is a "non-renewable" resource. (Sure the petroleum supplies could replenish over the course of the next hundred million years or so, but in the context of humanity it is not coming back) Renewable energy simply means it comes from a renewable resource, such as the sun, tides, and wind. In an ideal world we could harness energy rather than just drill and burn things. I think that's what we're working for. Hope that helps.

[–]Squirrelson 1 point2 points ago

Are we going to run out of sunlight ever? No, we're not... Sunlight is renewable because we never run out of the source.

[–]AndyYankee17 -1 points0 points ago

Doesn't mean it's renewable, just that it's virtually limitless. There's a difference.

[–]Squirrelson 1 point2 points ago

In our system of Planet Earth, Sunlight is renewable because there is no situation where we will not have Sunlight flowing in.

[–]AndyYankee17 -2 points-1 points ago

So before the industrial revolution coal was renewable?

[–]Squirrelson 0 points1 point ago

Are you really implying the sun will blow up before humanity is dead?

[–]AndyYankee17 -1 points0 points ago

So before the industrial revolution coal was renewable?

I'm implying that just because you don't exhaust an energy source before you are done with it, doesn't make it renewable.

[–]Squirrelson 1 point2 points ago

Renewable in the context of energy means it's naturally replenished at a rate as fast or faster than it is consumed.

Digging up more coal is not naturally replenishing.

[–]AndyYankee17 -1 points0 points ago

Neither is the sun. The hydrogen isn't getting replenished.

[–]Squirrelson 0 points1 point ago

Unless we're using it up as a resource by converting it into power then it's a renewable energy source.

If I use more solar panels there isn't less sunlight for you.
