Just so ya know, they shat and pissed all over each other. I do know they'd bring them up from time time during the trip to wash them off and whatnot. Those who didn't make it were tossed overboard. IIRC a lot of slaves were bought from tribes who captured other tribesman.

[–]Armpit-Vagina 12 points13 points ago

Imagine the stink. Even outside of the slave quarters I bet you smell it. These trips took weeks, so imagine all the shit and maggots that accumulated. They probably made the slaves clean it all out at the end of the trip too. I wonder what they fed them during the voyage.

[–]Tamer_ 7 points8 points ago

What do you mean "fed" ?

[–]Armpit-Vagina 11 points12 points ago

I mean I know tons of them died during the trip, but it wouldn't really be profitable for the slave traders to collect a bunch of slaves from Africa and then transport an entire ship full of dead bodies to a different continent. Keeping a good portion of their "cargo" alive would have been necessary on some very austere level. I'm just wondering if they went through the hold and threw moldy bread at them every few days or what.

[–]Tylertylertyler23 1 point2 points ago

You know, what did they give them to eat.

[–]faschr4023 3 points4 points ago

I learned that the slave ships were actually smelt from miles away. You got to love education in the south

[–]MrKrazybones 0 points1 point ago

It was also hot as fuck inside those ships too

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Better them then us kind of thing I suppose.

"Don't take us! we'll bring you people!"

[–]sp00kyd00m 3 points4 points ago

man... the chief is fuckin UP!

[–]potentiallyoffensive 3 points4 points ago

Actually IIRC slavery was already common among African tribes when the Europeans arrived. When tribes went to war and one conquered another tribe, that tribe would be enslaved for a short amount of time (a few years I think) and they would be released eventually. Obviously there was more honor involved than in the slave system established by whites.

However, when the Europeans did arrive, the flourishing tribes that had many slaves would sell them to the Europeans for goods from Europe and America. These tribes probably were not aware of the horrid and permanent conditions they were selling the slaves into.

EDIT: Just scrolled down, and I saw that StonedSamurai gave pretty much the same explanation as I did. However he has a bit more detail if you want to read that, too.

Just hold it...

[–]lamenta3 17 points18 points ago

I see Spirit Airlines is offering even LESS legroom now...

[–]StonedSamurai 42 points43 points ago

Okay, since there's only 20 comments, I can hope that this does not get buried as does all my other posts concerning slavery.

FIRST OF ALL

There will be some retard who says something along the lines of, "blacks sold their own into slavery it's not as much the europeans fault." Yes, africans did sell their own into slavery, but the African practice of slavery was more similar to European indentured servitude than European slavery. African slaves had basic rights, were allowed to own property, had their children born free, and various other amenities not experienced by European slaves. For the most part, African slavers had no idea what they were selling their slaves into because the slavery they practiced was much more humane.

Secondly

Slavery in the U.S is just a microcosm of slavery in the Americas. In all honesty, if you had to be a slave, being a slave in colonial America was probably the best thing that can happen to you. For one, the spanish treatment of their slaves was completely and utterly horrible. Their entire system of slavery was based around the fact that their slaves had a lifespan of 2-3 years, so their system was based on disposing of old slaves and bringing in new ones.

Overall, slavery was fucking horrible and more inhumane than you can imagine, yes Africans did sell their own into slavery but Europeans hold most of the blood on their hands. I'm not saying white people are evil; I'm saying Europeans who participated in the slave trade during the Columbian Exchange were evil.

[–]Hyperian 2 points3 points ago

[–]poorlyplaced 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for trying to inject some sense into this discussion. Also, the American slave trade was distinct in that it was dehumanizing. African slaves could often marry into the family of their owners, and were treated like fellow humans. There were social and legal penalties for mistreating slaves.

[–]schizodepressed -3 points-2 points ago

Anyone who says "blacks sold their own into slavery" is being idiotic and horrendously ignorant of African history, since it was frequently ethnic groups who were victorious in a war selling the losers into slavery. There is no such thing as a monolithic "black" people - in fact, dark-skinned Africans are the most ethnically/genetically diverse people on Earth.

[–]potentiallyoffensive 1 point2 points ago

Thank you. I just got done writing a very similar comment and then scrolled down to see this. Beautiful explanation.

[–]smyd223 21 points22 points ago

I just found out last year that this was actually anti-slavery propaganda put out by the British! Not saying that conditions on slave ships weren't horrendous, because they were, but there was no way to pack that many people on one ship.

[–]baltona 1 point2 points ago

Source? I'm really curious.

[–]smyd223 -2 points-1 points ago

Heard it from a fellow SS teacher. Sorry, I'm having difficulty finding anything because I have a virus and can't click on any google links. Can anyone else help out with this please?

[–]Japock -1 points0 points ago

Leems Segit

[–]Razzamanazz 0 points1 point ago

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brookes_(ship)

Seems the pic is accurate in describing how packed that particular ship was (Brookes). In fact, it's less cramped than previous trips showing storage of 454 people opposed to 600+.

[–]valormorghullis 4 points5 points ago

But super duper efficient

[–]Zushii 3 points4 points ago

not really. Only 40% made it. Had they only loaded 40% maybe 90% would have made it.

[–]fgriglesnickerseven 3 points4 points ago

They hadn't quite figured out the whole numbers thing back then.

[–]Sonic1515 0 points1 point ago

The attrition rate dropped significantly when they started paying the shippers on a per slave basis upon arrival in the Americas, rather than upon leaving port in Africa. Gave the shipping company incentive to keep their cargo alive.

[–]Riederbirk 3 points4 points ago

If they only loaded 40% and 90% survived, they would arrive with only 36% instead of 40% when loading 100% at the beginning. Check your math.

[–]Zushii 1 point2 points ago

Check your math mate.

Example:

100 Slaves are loaded only 40% survive. 60 casualties. Only 40% are loaded of 100. 90% survive. 4 casualties.

60 casualties compared to 4 casualties are a high effecient grade. It would have made much more sense to load in only 40% and have 90% of them survive.

[–]jonnie5 2 points3 points ago

That's still 36%, or 36 to survive instead of 40, so, in terms of efficiency, maybe loading 50 and hoping that 90% survived would be best. But none of this has any basis in any sort of reality or fact.

[–]Highlighter_Freedom -1 points0 points ago

You're thinking space efficiency, though. Slaves aren't free, though, so high attrition is less monetarily efficient.

[–]ron2838 2 points3 points ago

Maybe they got a bulk discount like costco

[–]johnajh 1 point2 points ago

i hate to talk about the economics of the slave trade but it all comes down to how much each voyage would cost over the amount of money made from sell the slaves

[–]bonerland11 0 points1 point ago

I hate to say this, but maybe they needed to load them up the way they did for ballast purposes...

[–]Riederbirk -1 points0 points ago

Not really. There was an basically infinite supply of slaves in Africa, and a single voyage took many months, so it would be more efficient to load the 100% and have 40% available to sell.

[–]absolutsyd 0 points1 point ago

Of course, they had to pay for all of them, so you'd thinking having 90% survive would be better, even if it took more voyages to move them all.

[–]Whyarentyoumadbro 0 points1 point ago

This is actually true..if they didn't pack them in so tight they would have gotten more across by loading less... as fucked up as that is to say...

[–]taboo007 2 points3 points ago

I remember that picture from my grade school history book! Must have looked at it for hours!

[–]WanderingEnt1065 0 points1 point ago

I remember staring at this in middle school trying to wrap my head around the horror.

[–]KarneEspada 1 point2 points ago

I hate my ancestry a lot sometimes.

[–]fuqmf 1 point2 points ago

When slavery was abolished we should of put all the niggers back in these same boats put them in the middle of the ocean and burned the ships to the ground.

[–]Camizow 1 point2 points ago

My 9th grade history teacher showed us this.

[–]Whyarentyoumadbro 1 point2 points ago

Yup same here I think around 8th grade for me

[–]iamasociopath22 1 point2 points ago

A lot more slaves were shipped to the Caribbean and South America than to to the U.S. Just thought I'd point that out before this turns into an all out hate America thread.

[–]wittie888 -4 points-3 points ago

Hey I just met you, and THIS IS CRAZY, But here's my slave ship. Can you get in it maybe?"

[–]TrevX9 1 point2 points ago

Now that we've all discussed the more obvious reasons of why this is indeed fucked up, I would like to point out the misused apostrophe in the "Boy's" section.

[–]MajSARS 1 point2 points ago

Just an excerpt from "Brooks guide to planking".

[–]johnajh 0 points1 point ago

i remember this from year 10 history, its abit sick but me and my friend used to try and find where would be the best place to be put on the boat the bit with the most room

[–]deadchap 1 point2 points ago

I don't remember any reference to this in the opening ceremony of the Olympics. Come to think of it there were no references to India, Ireland, Africa, The Caribbean, or the numerous other colonies that were exploited to create the Empire. Maybe in the closing ceremony.

[–]Maevenn 0 points1 point ago

Why is "Boy's" apostrophized? Was this an error, or am I missing a really cool etymological fact?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

At the Ontario Science Center there is something called The Confinement Box that simulates a cell in one of those ships. During the simulation the back wall will push against you until there is little room left, giving you a first hand impression of what it felt like to be stuck in there.

[–]overthereman -1 points0 points ago

I'm going to start using the word "shewn".

[–]crayzme -1 points0 points ago

Don't let the Mexicans find this!

[–]jumpsplat -1 points0 points ago

Looks like the dorms at my college.

[–]two_canoes 1 point2 points ago

i wonder what kind of fucked up blueprints will be turning up in 150 years about our time...

[–]mastr_slik -1 points0 points ago

looks cozy

[–]Sferwerda 0 points1 point ago

Ahh thats how we dutch made alot of money

[–]ifiwasntintherapgame 0 points1 point ago

Yes, "crazy" is certainly one word for it...

[–]katerpilar 0 points1 point ago

Fuck you. Now I'm singing that stupid song.

[–]laurasshittyusername 0 points1 point ago

[–]snutr 0 points1 point ago

Remember back in the olden days when you could spell words any which way you wanted to and no one complained because most folks were illiterate anyway?

[–]stanksnax 0 points1 point ago

The Atlantic slave trade actually resulted in a change in shark migration patterns.

What is often overlooked, is that the Atlantic Slave trade was minuscule in comparison to the Arab slave trade. Ports like Zanzibar were havens for a slave trade that began hundreds of years before, and lasted several decades after the Atlantic slave trade.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_slave_trade

That doesn't mean the atrocities committed on the Atlantic weren't bad, but I'm honestly a little frustrated that the Arab slave trade doesn't get more attention. Simply because it was FAR more brutal than the Atlantic...

[–]Ironicallypredictabl 1 point2 points ago

The sailors had it pretty bad because of the smell.

[–]Forfuckssakes 1 point2 points ago

I remember when i saw that in the 5th grade

[–]Sanity_prevails 1 point2 points ago

"in the manner of galleries in a church" - is this the original WWJD?

[–]Linkzor24 1 point2 points ago

Are you serious? You hadn't seen this picture before?? :oo

[–]whynotzoidberg0991 -1 points0 points ago

Stay classy religion.

[–]B4llzD33p -3 points-2 points ago

So what's the problem? I see room for more.

[–]SoothingKarma -2 points-1 points ago

If this is transportation under the regulated slave trade I dread to think of the shit that went on in the un-regulated slave trade! What the fuck were people thinking ! Slavery for fuck sake! ಠ_ಠ

[–]schizodepressed -2 points-1 points ago

"Well, sure sucks that I just got sold into slavery, but I guess this boat ride won't be so terrible. It'll be nice to see the ocean, explore a new land." [five minutes later] "OH WAIT A GODDAMN MINUTE"

[–]bl0742 0 points1 point ago

So call me, maybe?

[–]itsDUMPING -4 points-3 points ago

Man if that is how I got to America and arrived to be whipped and pick cotton, all I would think is, "Fuck this ain't so bad..."

[–]Zee_n1 -5 points-4 points ago

crazy efficient!

[–]JellyFreeBeans -2 points-1 points ago

I know! so organized.

[–]iamthekiller 0 points1 point ago

They didn't have copy & paste back then so each slave had to be hand drawn!

[–]Friendly-Toker -2 points-1 points ago

It took a few seconds to realize I was looking at a late 1700's diagram of a condom

[–]Dickybow -2 points-1 points ago

Can you imagine what the un-regulated slave trade was like?

Why the fucking downvotes? This is not a joke. Look at the diagram, it says "under the REGULATED slave trade" They thought this was doing slavery PROPERLY. How bad do you think the unregulated ships looked?

[–]poorlyplaced 0 points1 point ago

Some folks say that Atlantic shark migration patterns changed during the period because so many people were thrown overboard.

[–]Dickybow 1 point2 points ago

I can believe that.

[–]Diowolf -5 points-4 points ago

Sees title But here's my number So call me maybe.

[–]EOTWAWKI -1 points0 points ago
