It's not always given anymore and it's rarely required. That being said, we obviously have laws against being such an ass. However, this comic always comes back up, and everyone always misses the point of the humor. It's unlikely that the kid would have an immediate reaction to the removal of the medication either, but nobody bitches about that. Hyperbole is designed to make a point, not be over-analyzed.

Actually, it doesn't: you're confusing it with the Hippocratic oath, which is unrelated. It comes from the Greek word hypokrites: "stage actor, pretender, dissembler." Nothing to do with the medical profession at all.

I never understood that mentality.. Or the whole "thank god he made it out of surgery" or whatever. If you're thanking god and believe he did the curing, why even waste your time and money seeing a doctor? Oh yeah.. Because it was the doctors and nurses and medicine and SCIENCE that fucking saved you
