He would make a great goblin in the new Hobbit

[–]Phoequinox 4 points5 points ago

I want to punch him. His face looks like he got in trouble shortly before and did this out of anger. Kids who act like that make me want to cut my balls off.

[–]K1dn3yPunch 2 points3 points ago

BTW, the girl blew out the candle, not the boy.

[–]chefmcduck 212 points213 points ago

It was a great race. France wasn't even around the top until the last couple guys. They came back like they were promised eclairs for the win.

[–][deleted] 108 points109 points ago

As a french, when Phelps entered the water, I though "welp, we're fucked", then when I saw that he was a good two meters ahead of us, I really thought that we wouldn't ever win. But that fucking finish. I enjoyed every single meter of the last 200m.

[–]chefmcduck 63 points64 points ago

I think it was the second last guy on the French team that really came back. He was motoring it. Then the fourth guy also did exceedingly well.

I'm Canadian, so we usually just like to watch. 'Personal best' is our motto! (No fault to our athletes, they just don't get government support like other countries have)

[–]CaptInsane 30 points31 points ago

My wife said the 4th Frenchy is the fastest in the world at the moment

[–]RXG4 19 points20 points ago

Yannick Agnel, only 20 year old.

[–]CanIHazJob 21 points22 points ago

Obligatory 'What am I doing with my life'.

[–]FartingBob 23 points24 points ago

A 15 year old lithuanian just won a gold medal in the pool. I was sitting on my bed eating biscuits when i was watching it. I'm not saying i am wasting my life, but by aged 15 i did not have a single olympic medal. Or a girlfriend.

[–]chefmcduck 27 points28 points ago

That lithuanian doesn't have a level 80 in WoW though, does he? Fuckin right he doesn't.

[–]FartingBob 10 points11 points ago

So we can call it a tie?

[–]lifedev 8 points9 points ago

That lithuanian doesn't have a level 80 in WoW though, does she? Fuckin right she doesn't.

And Quentin Tarantino

[–]FuschiaKnight 25 points26 points ago

That 4th guy was so fast. I was sad to see America lose, but that was really impressive!

[–]OCELLARIS_CLOWNING 5 points6 points ago

He was a good second faster than everybody else IIRC.

[–]AfroKona 19 points20 points ago

Not to mention Lochte was pretty slow.

Ryan Lochte: hero of France.

[–]penndotsucks 3 points4 points ago

I didn't realize a 47.74 was slow.

[–]MadScientist420 1 point2 points ago

They would have won if he matched Phelps' time.

[–]fuck_nuggett 1 point2 points ago

It is so frustrating to hear people say that going 47 is slow... Cesar's world record is 46.91 and that was at world champs in 2009 with the suits!

[–]Dunkelz 1 point2 points ago

Sadly I think he put too much into the qualifying race he was in earlier in the day, and he just has a really busy schedule for the entire Olympics. Also Phelps seems to have lost his magic.

[–]PaleFury 5 points6 points ago

He did really well in the relay, I thought. Didn't they put him out first? I thought he was somewhere between first and third place... and then suddenly this amazing Frenchman was like, "FRANCE TIME" and then they won.

[–]vorpalsword92 6 points7 points ago

well Phelps was the one who gave them the full body length lead

[–]SantiagoAndDunbar 6 points7 points ago

he's 27 and coming off the greatest single performance the olympics has ever seen

[–]DrVonD 1 point2 points ago

Ehhh not really. Agnel (last French guy) is just on fire right now. Totally destroyed the 200 freestyle tonight also.

[–]JChen1717 1 point2 points ago

He was flying; the amazing thing though is his split was still over a half-second slower than Lezak's in Beijing IIRC.

[–]AlasPoorCitizen 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, he just won gold about an hour ago in an individual event ahead of Lochte and others. Think it was the 400m freestyle.

[–]chuggles 8 points9 points ago

No fault to our athletes, they just don't get government support like other countries have

$200 million a year from the government directly (excluding all of the many, many sponsorship deals)...yeah, that's enough.

[–]chefmcduck 2 points3 points ago

Are you sure about that? Honestly, I was just trying to be nice figuring that we don't support our Olympics as well as other countries, but you are right that is a lot of money for 'Personal Best'. shrugs

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]fuck_nuggett 3 points4 points ago

the last guy, Agnel, was really the one who swam amazingly fast, all of the other splits were very similar but then agnel went a full second faster than Lochte did which was enough to catch up and win.

[–]peterhobo1 2 points3 points ago

Well also we are much bigger about our winter game, so more kids try winter sports, so we find more great athletes in winter sports than summer. This can be observed through our fans.

[–]drewsus 1 point2 points ago

I am Canadian and I can confirm that I like to watch *lights cigarette*

[–]mcgroobber 0 points1 point ago

Neither do the americans.

[–]JorgeCS 0 points1 point ago

'Personal best' is our motto!

That actually made me laugh out loud.

[–]kwyjibos 0 points1 point ago

Heh I think I messed up a Canadian broadcast on my way home yesterday, I was walking past them shooting just as the presenter said;

"A Canadian hasn't qualified for the 100m freestyle final since Dick Pound in 1960".

I tried not to laugh till I was past the camera, I really did try!

[–]johnnytightlips2 1 point2 points ago

Michael Phelps is really off the pace right now, it should make the races more exciting

[–]insanity-insight 6 points7 points ago

nah, his split was great, 47.1. He'll absolutely crush the field in the 200 fly tomorrow. The 400 IM was a bad swim in a race that he hasn't trained for in 4 years - i wouldn't read too much into it.

[–]johnnytightlips2 2 points3 points ago

He was really unconvincing in the semis today and poor in the medley, I don't think he's got it in himself this time around.

[–]downvotesmakemehard 0 points1 point ago

He's going to wish he made it to the opening ceremony instead. He's definitely fallen off his best. He's barely squeaking the cut offs.

[–]chefmcduck 1 point2 points ago

I could be wrong here but I don't think he train nearly as hard as last Olympics. When he won the 8 gold - he trained like it was his sole purpose in life. Now, he has a lot of publicity stuff to do as well. I'm Canadian, and I would love to see Phelps win his last couple of medals to take over the big record. Stuff like that makes the Olympics really exciting to watch.

[–]FTLOG 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the description. I swim myself, and I LOVE watching the Olympic swimming events, but I can't afford cable right now so I'm missing everything.. :[

[–]Loopbot75 0 points1 point ago

grumblegrumblegrumble

[–]JlyGrnGiant 0 points1 point ago

It was almost a mirror finish of the 2008 Olympics when Bernard had a half-length lead going into the final half of the last leg, and Lezak barely edged him out.

[–]Meersbrook 0 points1 point ago

Wouldn't have you if you'd been promised eclairs? I mean proper, choux creme filled eclairs, not them namby pamby whipped cream ones.

[–]djbehnke 111 points112 points ago

I love how everyone was talking about Australia being so good and that USA would have to play perfect and the Aussies do average to win and then Australia doesn't even place in the relay.

[–]forscienceyeah 7 points8 points ago

Because our guys talked themselves up too much, or the first guy who swam certainly did 'the missile' - bunch of cunts. Our women are doing fantastic though :3

[–]Thinkiknoweverything 1 point2 points ago

the missle?

[–]insanity-insight 2 points3 points ago

James Magnussen's nickname is "The Missile," and he was the best 100 freestyler in the world coming into the Olympics. Didn't have his best race leading off the relay though, although he'll still be lightning fast in the open 100 IMO

[–]SexualHarasmentPanda 4 points5 points ago

TIL, but wouldn't "The torpedo" be more apt :)

[–]lemonpjb 11 points12 points ago

Ian Thorpe was already "The Thorpedo"

Or were you referencing that?

[–]CammTheMuss 0 points1 point ago

Whoever the fuck decided it would be a good idea to put the missile first instead of anchor should be executed.

[–]victorianlove 0 points1 point ago

my thoughts exactly, that was the only reason i didn't through a temper tantrum lol. that and US can come back next year. (the comment made by the interviewer after the race was hilarious, something about not knowing if phelps would be back after the comment that they were all young guys and would probably be back next year round, HAH!)

[–]mshel016 21 points22 points ago

RIP arguably the top character on Dexter. Re-watched seasons 1&2 the last couple months just for that spunky fellow

[–]imperfectfromnowon 19 points20 points ago

That's funny because my girlfriend and I always bonded over how much we hated Doakes, mainly because he was a troublemaker and we just enjoyed yelling his name and shaking our fists at the heavens. Now we just blame things on him that go wrong in our lives. He was a great character though, I loved those seasons.

[–]atrollsatan 26 points27 points ago

Troublemaker? No, not the guy who murders to satisfy his urges

The cop trying to do his job is the trouble maker

[–]vpookie 9 points10 points ago

He ís the antagonist in this story, so it's logical to feel with the protagonist and against the antagonist. That's kind of the point.

[–]atrollsatan 8 points9 points ago

You know there are shows where it seems like we're following a protagonist, and his perspective makes him look like a protagonist, but if you step back, you realize he's a mega douche. Dexter is one of those shows, Breaking Bad is another.

[–]ProlificInquiry 3 points4 points ago

Well, technically a character can be the protagonist and crazy evil. Dexter is clearly both.

[–]YadaYadaSex 10 points11 points ago

The word is 'Anti-Hero'. The Sopranos made the whole anti-hero thing really big. Now it seems like every show is attempting it.

Edit: In case you forgot, as I had, this is a thread about Olympic swimming, SURPRISE MUTHAFUCKA

[–]vpookie 0 points1 point ago

Actually that's not what protagonist means: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protagonist

[–]Shyamallamadingdong 1 point2 points ago

Atrollsatan, you give me the creeps sometimes, you know that?

[–]Inamanlyfashion 1 point2 points ago

Eventually he really is just the cop trying to do his job. At first he just hates Dexter arbitrarily.

[–]Forstias 1 point2 points ago

Damn you, you made me look him up on wikipedia to see if he didnt realy die

[–]jhin_mach -1 points0 points ago

stopped watching the show when his character died. i dont even know why

[–]DJAshian 124 points125 points ago

NBC is still sucking Lochte's dick despite him singlehandedly losing the 4x100 relay for the US while Phelps opened up a huge lead...

[–]MoHerpMoDerp 42 points43 points ago

Maybe they are trying to make up for being such asshats after he beat Phelps in the 400 IM

[–]jraines 14 points15 points ago

He split a 47.7 (fucking fast) and he is not 100 freestyler. Give credit to France and Agnel, it was almost as good as Lezak's comeback 4 years ago.

If any American deserves any blame at all, it's coach Greg Troy for sticking Lochte at the anchor, BUT this assumes one of the other guys would have gone nearly a SECOND FASTER JUST BY BEING THE ANCHOR. Maybe one of the guys had that kind of 6th gear in him, but I honestly don't think so.

[–]thelunatic 3 points4 points ago

BBC were pointing out that Lochte was picked over a sprint specialist. You had people not in the four that are better at the event. Your team was picked for commercial reasons.

[–]jraines 11 points12 points ago

Care to name names? The other options were Jimmy Feigan, Matt Grevers, Ricky Berens, and a 36 year old Jason Lezak. Which one of these swimmers do you think could have split a 47.0 or faster, given that none (except Lezak during the suit era) have ever broken 48 from a flat start (relay start grants you about .7 if you're right on)? Keep in mind Berens and Grevers had semifinal races earlier in the night.

[–]jamorama 7 points8 points ago

Given the shit Lezak pulled last time around... I probably would've picked him.

That said, you've got a point there.

[–]PsyanideInk 4 points5 points ago

I would not call it "commercial reasons," as much as job security.

Imagine if it were the exact same result, but it was someone else as the anchor instead of Lochte. The fallout would be HUGE. Everyone would be blaming the Troy for not going with the hot hand, because Lochte is the name on the tip of everyone's tongue. It would be like sitting Kobe in the 4th quarter despite the fact that a guy off the bench might be better suited for the offensive scheme the coach wants to run.

[–]procrasticator 25 points26 points ago

It wasn't all Lochte's fault. He still swam an amazing race considering he's not a 100 free specialist. Cullen Jones lost a bit of the big lead and the french swimmer had a freakin Lezak swim. Complete reversal of roles here from Beijing.

[–]daveloper 5 points6 points ago

as a french I felt like revenge time!

[–]procrasticator 1 point2 points ago

I can only imagine! And now we wait for Rio 2016 for the score-settling showdown. God, I love the Olympics.

[–]unclesam65 3 points4 points ago

That was no lezak swim. Lezak was about a half second faster than that guy if I remember correctly. Also this was way less dramatic than Beijing, Phelps record was on the line that day and that race was a lot closer than this one was. Also, I remember there being smack talk before that race which only increased the drama, there wasn't much of that here.

[–]procrasticator 5 points6 points ago

Lezak went a 46.06 and the French guy yesterday went a 46.74. Lezak's swim was undoubtedly better, more dramatic, and my personal favorite moment in swimming history. I only meant that the last leg of the French relay caught up to and passed the last leg of our relay, eerily mirroring the Beijing race.

[–]PandaFosho 15 points16 points ago

Lochte still had the lead when his leg begin...

[–]insanity-insight 16 points17 points ago

Yeah, and Agnel posted one of the fastest relay splits in world history. Sometimes your best effort isn't enough when the guy next to you has a superhuman moment.

[–]shelterin 0 points1 point ago

Looks like it's not just a moment god sir. Deal with it.

[–]procrasticator 25 points26 points ago

And the French still had the lead when Lezak's leg began in Beijing. Sometimes, even if you do your best, the other guys do better. Lochte swam below a 48, the French guy swam below a 47. That's crazy stuff. No shame in that. Disappointment, sure, but no shame.

[–]fireinthesky7 0 points1 point ago

Jones may not have had quite the monster swim that Phelps did, but he still handed Lochte a good half-second lead.

[–]jonnyrotten7 5 points6 points ago

And Lochte lost again in the 200 free, again to the Frenchman. Didn't even make the podium. Shows you how impressive Phelps winning 8 golds is.

[–]rockoblocko 2 points3 points ago

What was Lochtes time on his segment?

[–]procrasticator 9 points10 points ago

47.74, still a good time. The French split was 46.74, an amazing time. Jason Lezak's split in the 2008 relay was 46.06, a freak of nature unbelievable time.

[–]insanity-insight 0 points1 point ago

47.7. Not a great split, but pretty solid for a guy who doesn't swim the 100 free. Agnel's split was 46.7 and he was the only guy under 47 seconds if I remember correctly.

[–]biggbuckz 0 points1 point ago

I don't know, but it felt like a billion years.

[–]fuck_nuggett 2 points3 points ago

maybe you didnt notice but the US team each went pretty much the same time as one another where as the first three frenchmen were also very similar to the americans except for the last one, Dagnel who simply crushed it

[–]CarolusMagnus 1 point2 points ago

*Agnel

Also, Lochte was slower than all other US team members*, slower than all French team members, and slower than half the Russian and Australian team. Also, way slower than his future replacement Grevers was in the heats.

[*Subtracting 0.7s from starting swimmer's time to account for relay starts.]

[–]daveloper 1 point2 points ago

you either win or lose TOGETHER

[–]katlaish 23 points24 points ago

I think the little girl is still the one who blows the flame out.

[–]spacecadet06 6 points7 points ago

As funny as this gif is, there's no way that kid blows out the candle, it's the girl all the way.

[–]BananaHammock74 16 points17 points ago

I started to search for the video at work, and it started with "little boy blows little girl.." then I stopped. Time to get back to work.

[–]psytrancedsquid 7 points8 points ago

New Zealand here, all this talk of winning is getting us depressed.

[–]wmu212 6 points7 points ago

Mens Pair rowing. Got gold in that, didn't ya?

[–]looscannon 2 points3 points ago

But you'll always have rugby!

[–]Ofthedoor 4 points5 points ago

As a Frenchman this is how I feel now.

[–]TheJucheisLoose 76 points77 points ago

As an American, this was fucking heartbreaking. Not because it was France (well, a little because of that), but because we were fucking counting on that medal to help us outmedal the goddamn Chinese.

[–]The_Dirt_McGurt 25 points26 points ago

Didn't the relay team do this same thing to france 4 years ago? Looked like Phelps was out of the 8 Gold Medals hunt, but the 4th USA swimmer had a miraculous final lap and just barely out-touched the frenchman? I recall leaping from my friend's couch and spilling beer everywhere.

[–]machsmit 27 points28 points ago

Jason Lezak (who's an awesome guy, by the way) swam the anchor leg, running down a near body-length lead (which is huge over a 100m race) on Alain Bernard, who had been the 100m free world record holder going into the race (the French leadoff leg beat the 100 free individual world record on his split). Lezak swam the fastest relay split ever by a huge margin - like a 46 flat - the French lead broke the individual record, and the US, French, and I think the three teams that finished behind them all broke the relay world record, which had only been set in that event in the prelims. Basically every conceivable thing that can excite a swimmer :)

[–]TheJucheisLoose 20 points21 points ago

Probably the greatest swimming performance in men's relay history.

[–]fireinthesky7 8 points9 points ago

Never mind relay history, that has to be one of the best, if not the absolute best swimming races in Olympic history. It had everything: pre-race drama, underdog winner, the three top times in the world, and a contribution to Phelps's eight golds.

[–]TheJucheisLoose 4 points5 points ago

Jason Lezak. Hero of the U.S. team!

[–]WhatThePenis 5 points6 points ago

Yep. Looked like we were going to finish 2nd or 3rd because our anchor (Jason Lezak) had to swim agains the world record holder for France. He was behind about half a body length after the first 50m but he came back and won by 7 hundredths of a second in the last 20 or so meters. It was crazy.

[–]The_Dirt_McGurt 8 points9 points ago

It was incredible. It's where that Phelps Super-Saiyan gif is from now that I think about it. Really exciting stuff.

[–]WhatThePenis 2 points3 points ago

Yes! That's my favorite gif in the world. I've been looking for that forever! I love you.

[–]jack_spankin 4 points5 points ago

Yes and no.

We did stage a comeback and win, but the bigger story was that the french team had been talking shit like crazy up to the olympics. They were also the big favorites. Also, the guy doing the anchor was almost not included in the relay.

This time the Aussies were the favorites and everyone was smart enough not to talk a bunch of shit prior to the race.

[–]The_Dirt_McGurt 1 point2 points ago

OK cool that makes sense. I do indeed recall there being lots of shit talked by the French, especially because they posed a serious threat to Phelps' gold medal hunt. It was just an incredible race all around, the context made it all the sweeter.

[–]legaston 61 points62 points ago

I'm sorry but we needed it to get atleast one medal!

[–]TheJucheisLoose 14 points15 points ago

Haha, you guys are doing just fine.

[–]Mumbo_Jumb0 25 points26 points ago

Allez la France, payback for the last 4x100 relay :D

[–]jack_spankin 9 points10 points ago

It doesn't count as payback since our swimmers didn't act like over-confident dicks predicting a win and then losing.

That happened to us with the Aussies several years ago.

[–]Ragnalypse 2 points3 points ago

You really did. You were losing to Korea before that.

[–]LeAlthos 6 points7 points ago

We already have one =(

[–]jcmence1488 -1 points0 points ago

I am sorry but we have 15

[–]AthleteGamer 8 points9 points ago

We needed Jason Lezak to anchor again. His swim in Beijing was my favorite moment of any Olympics.

[–]TheJucheisLoose 2 points3 points ago

Agreed.

[–]fireinthesky7 2 points3 points ago

If they'd just switched up the relay order and had either Cullen Jones or Phelps swim the anchor, I'm convinced we would have won. Lochte is by no means our best freestyle swimmer, and I'd even venture to say that Lezak might have done better, given that Lochte had already had two or three races on the day.

[–]whailbait 0 points1 point ago

Even if he anchored again there'd be a good chance he wouldn't have been able to keep up with his time from Bejing. They had a different type of suit then that allowed for some amazing record breaks, and the suit's been banned since then. He may still have done well, but likely not as well as the last Olympics.

[–]AthleteGamer 3 points4 points ago

True, but that was before the suit ban. You have to remember though, everyone in that race was wearing the same "supersuit." What won Lezak the race in Beijing was purely training and a hell of a spirit.

[–]Caramel_Chew_Chew 0 points1 point ago

Im a Brit. We've yet to win a gold. Plenty of great performances, but I'm waiting for Wiggo.

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Enraged_Professor 13 points14 points ago

Its nothing personal, they are just our biggest competition for 1st in overall medals.

[–]RavarSC 4 points5 points ago

They're beating America by 1 medal

[–]idlenation 1 point2 points ago

But china have won more gold medals which at the end of the day count the most.

[–]Bryz_ 4 points5 points ago

Nice try, Chinese person.

[–]idlenation 23 points24 points ago

I'm not Chinese but apparently 1 out of every 5 people in the world are Chinese. And there are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my dad. Or my older brother Colin. Or my younger brother Wu Da Fa.

[–]MaxDPS 3 points4 points ago

Its not hate at all. Its just competition, which, you know, thats what the Olympics is all about.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

we were fucking counting on that medal to help us outmedal the goddamn Chinese.

We needed it more. We only had a bronze, silver and gold.

[–]shelterin -1 points0 points ago

Chinese are 1,34 billion. Keep challenging the russians, just forget about china they are out of "our" leagues.

[–]TheJucheisLoose 1 point2 points ago

China only has one kind of people: Chinese. USA has every kind of people and 310 million of them. China's population is sharply declining, USA's is increasing. Plus USA athletics are privately funded, China spends billions of taxpayer money on its athletes. I think we're doing just fine.

It does make you wonder about India, though.

[–]mamjjasond 0 points1 point ago

Meh, I don't feel that way. It's boringly repetitive to see the usual suspects winning medals in everything. I am happy that other countries are getting some as well.

[–]MagnificentDeception 16 points17 points ago

God damnit I thought this was context. I gave you my upvote you bastard!

[–]thevillian 9 points10 points ago

It was a magnificent deception, but your upvote has been avenged.

[–]MagnificentDeception 1 point2 points ago

Well thank you very much for adding the context. I tried to google it but could only find the 2008 one where the U.S. pretty much did op's gif to france.

On a related note to you, what is the doctor saying there?

[–]thevillian 2 points3 points ago

I believe it is,

"Whaa-aat?"

I don't understand how in the hell they can really tell when the swimmer actually reaches the wall within a millisecond for the next guy to jump in. On one of those laps I swear the dude was already in the air when the hand hit the wall - and with times like those it really makes a huge difference. Is there a green light + weight scale combo to make a determination from?

[–]Delaywaves 2 points3 points ago

That's pretty much the case for every Olympic sport. I see no problem with it.

I never noticed until now that the little girl does blow it out - look at her mouth. Her shithead little brother would have been too far away.

[–]no-one-important 0 points1 point ago

This gif is one of the few "funny" things I have laughed so hard I couldn't make noise at. Thank you.

[–]Ma_riqah506 0 points1 point ago

No offense, but i hate how American's just think that gold medals should just come naturally and they deserve them because they're the "favourites"

[–]Uncle_Gus 0 points1 point ago

Someone needs to make another version of this gif where the last frame holds still for a second or two and then some pixelated shades drop down over his eyes and the words "DEAL WITH IT" appear.

[–]luckyshamrok19 0 points1 point ago

I want you to know, I was having an awful day and this has made me laugh uncontrollably for about 30 minutes straight. Thank you so much.
