I am a space addict.. love books and pics etc... but man does this trip anybody else out?

[–]GameMisconduct63 12 points13 points ago

That is amazing.

[–]terminal_velocity 5 points6 points ago

it always amazes me how low the iss really is. I feel like it should be getting drawn back toward earth

[–]yuuray 2 points3 points ago

It actually is, though :)

[–]imh 2 points3 points ago

which in turn makes you realize how fast it's going/how big the earth is.

I've never seen this before. I just got two new great pictures today!

NASA.gov source.:

S116-E-05983 (12 Dec. 2006) --- Backdropped by New Zealand and Cook Strait in the Pacific Ocean, astronaut Robert L. Curbeam Jr. (left) and European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Christer Fuglesang, both STS-116 mission specialists, participate in the mission's first of three planned sessions of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction continues on the International Space Station. Cook Strait divides New Zealand's North and South Islands.

STS-116 was Space Shuttle Discovery.

I came to say how this was during construction of the boom. I knew something relevant and you ruined it! But really, I recommend reading on the construction methods used on the ISS. Its pretty interesting- constructing things in space is a little different than on terra firma obviously.

I wonder why we see so few photos of space-dudes...

I mean, they must be taking photos all the time - why don't they share them with the public more often?

[–]cynognathus 3 points4 points ago

They make quite a lot available to the public. Here are the galleries for all of the shuttle missions.

[–]MannyPadme 0 points1 point ago

Had no idea... thanks so much.

interesting thing I just noticed about this picture (it's been my desktop for a while); the length of coast of the South Island that you can see behind them is, as far as I can tell, around 400km (250 miles) - and that's roughly the same as the average altitude of the International Space Station.

in other words, the background view of this photo is as wide as it is tall. and that's... nice.

[–]SOncredible 3 points4 points ago

I've just got an eyegasm!

[–]awkwardlyelegent 2 points3 points ago

Nice. I know he's tethered, but it looks like he's just chillin holding onto the bar, all "no problem bro."

[–]stigga 1 point2 points ago

When is this from?

[–]cynognathus 0 points1 point ago

[–]stigga 0 points1 point ago

thanks

If you look close enough, you can just make out my house. There to the left of the antenna.

First spaceporn picture to make my desktop, beautiful!

[–]Terrorz 0 points1 point ago

This is such a beautiful and awe-inspiring picture. I could stare for hours in envy of those two for what they get to experience.

[–]enklined 0 points1 point ago

Damn that looks amazing! I want to be an astronaut so god damn bad >_<.

[–]Piscator629 1 point2 points ago

Since when did NASA have a cloaking device?

[–]ellivibrutp 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't be able to get a damn bit of work done if I were an astronaut.

I might even lose my mind out there like that.

I know they have to time all of their work perfectly when they are out there like that, I wonder if the squeeze a few minutes to just gawk at the earth.

[–]kayble12 0 points1 point ago

Here it is on google maps so you can get a size reference.

[–]lancypancy 0 points1 point ago

Is there any way to get a higher res or uncompressed version of this pic?

[–]RainbowPopsicle 0 points1 point ago

I see can see my city from there.

[–]brianhaddad 0 points1 point ago

This is incredible, and it just makes me wish we could start leaving low earth orbit right now (with people, though Curiosity is pretty cool)!

[–]ManicMilky 0 points1 point ago

Great picture, but no space shuttle in frame :P

[–]thelockz 0 points1 point ago

Is it just me, or do photos like this always look a little weird around the edges (the border between the front object and the background)? If I didn't know better, I'd say it's photoshoped. Does anyone know the reason?

[–]StevenMunterK 1 point2 points ago

I can see my town! Just below the aerial :D

[–]RUAUMOKO 1 point2 points ago

I can see my house!!

[–]ApatheticElephant 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit that's amazing. I didn't realise it went that low. It must be so incredible for those astronauts. You're floating there in space, and if you look down you can still see towns and roads. It takes the phrase "on top of the world" to a whole new level.

[–]aruffone 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for the new desktop background. Far out.

[–]dingo596 0 points1 point ago

Their just not giving a fuck

[–]Astrokiwi 1 point2 points ago

And North Island! Wellington (well, at least the Hutt, it's hard to tell) is kinda being blocked by that antenna thingee though...

[–]paulfknwalsh 2 points3 points ago

actually you can see Wellington there, to the left of the antenna - it's covering the harbour and Lower Hutt, but you can see Island Bay / Newtown, and central Welli next to the harbour. Freakin' awesome shot.

Also, how appropriate is your username in this thread? haha

[–]Astrokiwi 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I think you're right. I'm now trying to see if it's covering Miramar or not...

[–]Aegean 1 point2 points ago

Instant new desktop wallpaper. Thanks!

[–]tctony 1 point2 points ago

Wow. Amazing picture. Thanks for posting OP!

[–]aahxzen 1 point2 points ago

It is impressive how much detail you can see on the island... They seem so close. Fantastic picture.
