I wonder if gyms see a spike in membership each Olympic season.

[–]jackaloupe 82 points83 points ago

In about two to six months, you're going to be able to get some great deals on barely used exercise equipment on Craig's list.

[–]TheCrafter 8 points9 points ago

This is perfect.

I've been looking for a squat rack because the only gym I'm willing to pay for (the cheap no contract one) doesnt have a free standing rack just those shitty things that slide and shit. I hate those so much. And I'll be home for like 4 months now so maybe I'll get a good one.

[–]DBuckFactory 21 points22 points ago

Nope, but Ben & Jerry's probably sees a spike in sales.

[–]matt01ss 3 points4 points ago

The January spike for new year's resolutions is always funny to me

[–]jlennon4422 534 points535 points ago

Whenever I see a 15 year old at the Olympics I wonder what I am doing with my life

[–]niperwiper 363 points364 points ago

Get used to that feeling.

[–]RedAnarchist 18 points19 points ago

If you want to end up doing nothing with your life.

[–]A_British_Gentleman 230 points231 points ago

I find it worse when it's someone the same age as you. There was a 20 year old in the canoe slalom, and there's me on the sofa with a bag of dorritos. I've never been so depressed while watching sport.

[–]vampirewknd 131 points132 points ago

You should get a canoe.

[–]jamurp 305 points306 points ago

you could sit in the canoe, in your living room, with a bag of dorritos.

[–]Johnfohn 302 points303 points ago

He can paddle the canoe in the streams of his tears.

[–]jamurp 116 points117 points ago

before he gets washed away in a sea of regret.

[–]ilovesnowboarding 37 points38 points ago

Take a leap of faith? Or become an old man, filled with regret, waiting to die alone?

[–]wodahSShadow 16 points17 points ago

Take that leap of faith to end up an old man with no sofa and no bag of doritos.

[–]Paul2010Aprl 9 points10 points ago

Thanks to all of you who commented above. I haven't laughed like this for a long time.

[–]sixteenlettername 10 points11 points ago

How did you laugh? Was it particularly nasal? Or was it a mild-mannered chortle with a southern twang?

[–]ViaConNada 42 points43 points ago

Kinda like this?

[–]vampirewknd 12 points13 points ago

While watching the Olympics.

[–]Theorex 54 points55 points ago

Yeah, but I bet he can't eat Dorritos like you can, that shit takes technique, Dorritos are sharp, I've cut my mouth open on a sharp Dorrito.

[–]iImplying 23 points24 points ago

there should be an olympic gold medal for most horrific self-inflicted injury using a dorrito

[–]Fudgalicious 59 points60 points ago

Doritos, guys. One "r."

[–]captain_spaulding512 2 points3 points ago

I think they're saying it with an accent. Like rolling the tongue. Dor-r-ritos. That what was going on my my head anyway.

[–]ParrotofDoom 3 points4 points ago

I'm sure there are many uses for a Dorrito, most of which would not make suitable television viewing...

[–]I3addog 41 points42 points ago

That's bull shit man, if it weren't for those of us at home eating Doritos watching the Olympics on TV there wouldn't be Olympics.

[–]TheMomento 25 points26 points ago

I like your logic

[–]sometypeofperson 2 points3 points ago

This man speaks the truth!

[–]mouseknuckle 42 points43 points ago

Haha, I don't have this problem at all. I'm 37, there's nobody that old at the olympics!

...shit.

Edit: somehow, you guys aren't really making me feel any better. I'm short too, maybe I should take up gymnastics.

[–]madainn 35 points36 points ago

A 39 year-old won the men's cycling road race, you've still got 2 years!

[–]trauma_queen 3 points4 points ago

That last surge was amazing...

[–]indorock 4 points5 points ago

Well it was more a monumental fuck-up by the other guy.

[–]Red_Dog1880 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, but he's a known cheat.

[–]mrJ26 2 points3 points ago

Welcome to competitive cycling.

[–]Red_Dog1880 2 points3 points ago

Welcome ?

I'm Belgian, we own(ed) that shit.

[–]RJacksonm1 18 points19 points ago

Oldest competitor this year is a 71 year old Japanese fella, competing in Dressage; if my memory serves me right.

[–]jackaloupe 43 points44 points ago

I just hope I can dress myself at that age.

[–]TheBranleur 13 points14 points ago

And a 40 year old gymnast and a 60 something year old shooter :p

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit, a 40 year old gymnast?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

And a 71 year old horse dressager

[–]shutyourgob 8 points9 points ago

I think Ryan Giggs is 36, he scored in a soccer match for GBR yesterday, making the oldest player to ever score in the Olympics. Don't know if that's good news or bad.

[–]arrowheadt 4 points5 points ago

He'll be 39 in November.

[–]Dodge_Swinga 6 points7 points ago

In your defense: canoe slalom.

[–]A_British_Gentleman 6 points7 points ago

It sounds lame,, but actually looks really fun.

[–]Rankulus 3 points4 points ago

Why is it worse if they're the same age? It should be worse if they're younger.

[–]Swamplord42 34 points35 points ago

Because that could be you.

[–]Cuplink 2 points3 points ago

But for some reason you don't care because you had a great child hood, while those 15 year old gymnast probably had a shitty one.

[–]daschande 19 points20 points ago

Sometimes, though, I'd trade years of waking up at 4 AM for the chance to travel across the world on someone else's dime. (the most verbose way possible to say yolo)

[–]n0Skillz 7 points8 points ago

except you're still waking up at 4am i'm sure.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

It may sound weird, but there are people out that enjoy what they do...

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points ago

What a ridiculously ignorant statement...

[–]A_British_Gentleman 10 points11 points ago

Not sure, I guess I just assume the younger ones are some sort of super-kids. Like the 15 year old sprinter, I know that she's must surely be a natural to be in the olympics at that age. The ones my age make me think I could've done the same if I'd tried hard enough.

[–]kaze0 2 points3 points ago

Don't worry, he'll be a washed up has been by 28, and you will not experience that for at least 20 more years.

[–]throwmeaway76 13 points14 points ago

Hey, shooting competitions are usually filled with balding men. You could try that.

[–]RickAScorpii 6 points7 points ago

Yeah, one of them, the one who carried the flag for Andorra, is 61 and has an epic moustache. Start growing one!

[–]partysnatcher 101 points102 points ago

You think that's bad? Imagine how that 15 year old is going to feel when his/her career is over due to age / too strong competitors / injuries, and she/he doesn't know anything outside the competitive environment.

Now that's a big chunky portion of "what am I doing with my life". Sport careers are fickle things.

I'm not saying this to be critical of athletes, but they have much more pressure to "peak" at a certain time, than normal people do. Becoming a record swimmer at 40 or even 50 years is just not an option. However, an author or a graphical artist, for instance, has that option. And 50 year olds are happier and healthier than ever, you could easily live the life at that age.

As a psych student: Throw the expectations down the trash. With a burden of expectations created outside of you (even if they are well meant), almost noone can reach the top.

Let your goals be gradual improvement and personal bests, rather than becoming #1. It may sound unambitious, but that's the way winners do it.

[–]blue_gatorade 62 points63 points ago

Just lending a bit of perspective here. Being that fifteen year old five or six years down the road...it's rough.

I was sixth nationally in my former sport when I was 16, on target for a VERY good shot at the national title for my age group. Life was great. I was getting showered with free equipment, and it didn't entirely consume my life.

That fall, I was in an accident, which permanently fucked up my lower back and one of my knees. It wasn't anything that could have been prevented or foreseen, just random chance. Dream over, done, pack up your shit and try to stay in some semblance of shape for the rest of your life.

Five years down the road, I'm done with college, I have a great job, but every time I watch the Olympics, or any footage of my sport...fuckin hurts, man. I could have been there.

[–]lulzersuarus 18 points19 points ago

sorry to hear that :( have some gatorade

[–]only_one_contact 4 points5 points ago

May I ask what sport?

[–]blue_gatorade 8 points9 points ago

Cycling. I know it's not really huge right now(at least, I don't follow it anymore), but at that point it was in the middle of Lance's 'Tour Years'.

[–]TheMomento 4 points5 points ago

It's definitely big in the UK right now

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Cycling is bigger than ever if you ask me.

[–]Jackstick 9 points10 points ago

Rub it in, why don't you.

[–]only_one_contact 2 points3 points ago

Even if it's not the "hot" thing right now it's still cool. I'm sorry to hear about your injury and I hope you can find enjoyment in whatever activities you have in your life nowadays.

[–]apbadogs 1 point2 points ago

So, honestly, how rampent is doping in cycling?

[–]SolarTsunami 27 points28 points ago

Well, I would guess that most Olympic athletes went (or will go) to College as part of their career, so even if they couldnt get a job within the sport when they are no longer competitive they'll have something to fall back on. And besides, they're competing in the fucking OLYMPICS! That makes them among the very best in the whole world at what they do.

They know what they're doing, and I'm sure that most of them have a career plan. Its not like one day you cant swim fast enough so they kick you out the door. If you're good enough to preform at the Olympics, you're probably good enough to have a job as a coach for the rest of your life after. I know I'd take that over a career of pencil pushing.

[–]markgraydk 16 points17 points ago

Not necessarily. I think it is a very American thing that sports and college is linked so much.

[–]MastersInDisasters 31 points32 points ago

It's only linked because it is an artificial market that brings in tons of cash.

[–]holyice7 10 points11 points ago

Every time I point this out I get tons of downvotes from the college football fans.

[–]CitationNeeded567 4 points5 points ago

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "artificial" market. Isn't it just... well, a market?

[–]partysnatcher 3 points4 points ago

They know what they're doing, and I'm sure that most of them have a career plan.

Agreed, but in your entire post you are talking about the lucky top 1% in their careers, as if that is "how it should be".

Competitive sports is a system with winners and losers. I'm sure the losers have excellent career plans as well, but it's not taking them anywhere.

The lives of these people do not provide principles that you can apply to your life. Sure, you can be inspired by them, but you probably shouldn't compare yourself with them if you're not already top 1% in your field.

[–]jkonine 1 point2 points ago

In America, being a former Olympian is like the ultimate thing to have on your resume. I think the Americans will be fine.

[–]Points_To_You 7 points8 points ago

Not exactly the same, but I know about 6 guys who all played for the same college football team and then played in the NFL. None of them were the giant stars you see on TV every week.

The most hyped one got hurt and only played a couple seasons. Now he's 30ish living with his parents with no college degree. He still doesn't know what to do in life.

The one with the longest NFL career now works (without givig too much away) an average 50-60k a year job. Nicest guy you'll ever meet.

Another one only played a few seasons, but he now works in a 200k+ management job.

Meanwhile there's multiple guys from that same college team that are still playing in the NFL making millions.

I'm writing this on my phone. I'll come back and add to it later. But, my main point is that these sports stars have to go through the same shit the rest of us do. If they're smart they'll be able to go through it with a little extra cash in their pocket and the life experience of doing something they love at the highest level.

[–]FaKeShAdOw 3 points4 points ago

I'm not jealous of the constant schedules of exercise and training and expectations you have to go through when you're 15, and all you want sometimes at that age is to be normal like other girls.

It was almost like talking to a professional ballerina and they have similar worlds it seems.... Eating disorders can happen too, and periods will come to a screeching halt as well as shit self esteem.

Relationship with parents can be very sour, or relationships with men in general can just be... like they can never find the right person. They're always held up on this pedestal or they meet men who feel threatened by their status of being "better" already.

[–]DaTScientisT 33 points34 points ago

Not your fault. Many of these athletes were encouraged/forced by their parents to keep at sports at a young age.

So blame your parents.

[–]Badluck90 29 points30 points ago

this, i blame my parents.

fuckign assholes couldnt force me into being an olympic athlete

[–]freerangehuman 5 points6 points ago

Son, You want to be Athlete?

Why Not A+thlete?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

I think the majority of people who aren't good at any physical activity really wished their parents would tried and pushed them into a martial arts, or sport when they were younger. Totally inactive parents are horrible.

[–]jackaloupe 9 points10 points ago

Probably just encouragement or exploring physically active potential interests would be a better idea than pushing.

[–]kungura 11 points12 points ago

what about the 20 year olds in the premiere league? not only are they in TIP TOP shape, and amongst the best in the world at their craft, but also getting paid up to 90,000 pounds a week (sometimes even more!).

[–]shutyourgob 3 points4 points ago

I sometimes forget how young footballers are. Lionel Messi is only a month older than me. All time Barcelona top scorer. On track to be all time Argentina top scorer. 3 Ballon d'Or awards. Champions League. La Liga. Club World Cup. Copa Del Rey. Copa Libertadores. The greatest football player in history.

feelsbadman.jpg

Not to mention Neymar, Balotelli, Gotze, etc. THEY'RE INSANELY YOUNGER THAN ME!

[–]10b-5 4 points5 points ago

I hate to break it to you, but there are people being born today that are going to be more athletic and richer than you very soon! :p

[–]heimdal77 3 points4 points ago

Hey don't feel so bad about the 15 year olds, Dimitrios Loundras was 10 year old when he won a medal.

[–]MisterUNO 4 points5 points ago

I had a sort of different depressing experience. I fancy myself an artist. I grew up drawing, it's all I wanted to do, it's all I'm good at.

One day I'm sitting in a starbucks and a lady notices me doodling on my digital tablet. We talk. I find out she does art on the side as a hobby. She shows me her website. Turns out she's a phenomenal portrait artist, leagues better than me!! And the kicker was, she was a lawyer. So she had time to study law AND paint like a pro.

I felt so down because I had no other skill, and the one skill I did have is barely enough to earn me a living; I do odd jobs here and there. I'm what you would consider a starving artist.

[–]Richeh 7 points8 points ago

Don't worry about it. One day, you will be rich. Then you can have all the fifteen year olds you want.

[–]WickedKoala 1 point2 points ago

You've probably done a lot more....a 15 year at the Olympics means all they do 24/7 is train. They have no life outside the gym.

[–]IMasturbateToMyself 40 points41 points ago

Because it ate Will Ferrel?

[–]SHREDDED_WHEAT 8 points9 points ago

Because the lion is drunk. On scotch.

i don't know why people don't fucking work out, yeah, starting out is awkward, but once you're in a routine for 2 weeks you are literally addicted to the progress and endorphins

[–]SquareSoft 8 points9 points ago

I started working out again about two months ago, the all-over-your-body soreness feels so damn good. Not to mention you emotionally feel fantastic.

[–]Richeh 42 points43 points ago

..Because starting out is awkward?

[–]Aesthete 39 points40 points ago

No kidding. I decided to go for a run this morning. I rarely do that. After I got into the shorts and put my hair in a ponytail, I watched myself in the mirror and thought "What the flying fuck am I doing?"

It was worth it though. I felt great afterwards.

[–]ellipses1 15 points16 points ago

You are worth it.

Edit: So I don't look like a creeper- Aesthete originally had written "I was worth it though."

[–]Redditsays 9 points10 points ago

You are worth it.

Loreil.

[–]incognito_crocoduck 11 points12 points ago

L'Oreal. You're not worth it.

[–]DMore714 11 points12 points ago

I don't get that addiction thing everyone talks about. Day 60 is just as terrible as day 1.

Good thing I have a high metabolism and it looks like I work out even if I feel like dying after running a mile.

[–]chazzlabs 2 points3 points ago

You probably just haven't found an activity that you really love yet.

[–]DMore714 10 points11 points ago

Sure I have. Its called "sitting on the couch"

[–]OrganicMeatbag 2 points3 points ago

This! Exercise is not limited to going to the gym and lifting weights or going for a jog. You can dance, rock climb, swim, frisbee golf, hike, Zumba, take your dog for a walk, play Dance Dance Revolution, play sports, etc.

You'll never get into an exercise routine if you hate every second of it.

[–]RichardTheLionFart 5 points6 points ago

This is exactly what happens to me. Everyone talks about the addiction and the endorphins and all that. You know what happens to me? I hate it while doing it, and after, same thing. I do not find it enjoyable at all. This whole getting addicted to working out may work for some. But not for me. The ONLY working out i find enjoyable at all is playing sports. And thats just because it is not strictly boring working out.

Reddit is full of good resources with people willing to help and encourage you.

[–]KillerKittenMittens 16 points17 points ago

It's really not that hard, the positives heavily outweigh the negatives. But of course Reddit would rather watch someone they could be if they put in some effort and sulk in their laziness and lack of motivation.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

In a thread like this, yeah. When the options presented are a) redditor and b) olympian, people will choose redditor.

Our actual choices, though, are a) redditor and b) slightly fitter redditor.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]darkdonnie 31 points32 points ago

BS. I started when I was in my mid-thirties. My friends my age that don't work out gave me the "you're old and your metabolism" has slowed down song and dance. That's a weak excuse and you can still make excellent progress being that "old".

[–]Cryptic0677 9 points10 points ago

I agree. My mom over the last 2 years or so has gotten in her best fitness since probably high school. She's 62. It just takes more determination and good diet.

[–]graymankin 3 points4 points ago

You can encourage your metabolism to speed up too...simply by exercising more and eating more frequently. And eating and sleeping well in general. The more muscle you have, the more calories you need, and the more you burn. It's definitely BS that you can't get in shape after a certain age. That's just an excuse.

[–]Triseult 11 points12 points ago

38, and I'm in much better shape than I ever was at 20. It's never too late, and saying it's 28 or never sounds like an excuse to stop trying past 30.

[–]GFandango 2 points3 points ago

try depression

[–]h3st 6 points7 points ago

Exercise helps with that.

[–]ForeverMarried 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like a plan, until the "get up" part. Standing is uncomfortable, screw that.

[–]Fallingdownwalls 88 points89 points ago

Imagine how bad you're gonna feel when you find out that the Olympic village is essentially one big orgy for all these ecstatic young people in the peak of physical condition who're finally let loose after years of regimented living (last Olympics they went through 70,000 condoms, for 10,000 athletes - and those were the ones who bothered with condoms in the first place).

[–]tomhugyous 10 points11 points ago

[–]3206 4 points5 points ago

This is the missing motivation children need to be informed about.

[–]Jigsus 14 points15 points ago

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's propaganda. I've only heard that from the US and the athletes are basically on an eat-sleep schedule while they're competing.

Who the hell has time for sex?

[–]Fallingdownwalls 48 points49 points ago

After their event (for those who've competed already it's a 3 week long party now).

[–]cullend 15 points16 points ago

Who the hell would spread that "propaganda"? What purpose would it serve? And it's not like you go home after you get knocked out. Nor are you competing through the entire duration of the games..

[–]Superdudeman 52 points53 points ago

I want to pet him. ಠ_ಠ

[–]Lymah 16 points17 points ago

[–]Jigsus 2 points3 points ago

How the hell does he do it?

[–]saqneo 10 points11 points ago

I think he/she was legally blind, not completely blind.

[–]DBuckFactory 9 points10 points ago

Legally blonde in both eyes.

[–]KachimiGaNai 5 points6 points ago

All he sees is handbags!

..I'll let myself out.

[–]EpicJ 17 points18 points ago

[–]leeth_06 4 points5 points ago

Why does everyone feel sorry for themselves, and then continue to wine about how out of shape they are? Seeing this just makes me want to work out harder to make up for the lack of simple effort across the world.

[–]southnole 23 points24 points ago

I am a pretty fit dude but these athletes are on another level.

You have to remember they burn 3K-6K calories a day training, while we go to work.

There trully is no way to compete, and we aren't competing for gold medals, why stop yourself from yummy snacks.

[–]recursive 12 points13 points ago

You're not going to the olympics, so why bother trying?

[–]peace_off 62 points63 points ago

If it helps, elite athletes often ruin their bodies by training too hard, get injured a lot, and have a relatively short career.

[–]friendlyaussie 102 points103 points ago

Which is funny, because we've already ruined our bodies by assaulting it with large amounts of alcohol and instant noodles.

I've been making my noodles incorrectly all these years.

[–]asksredditquestions 6 points7 points ago

  • Step one: boil noodles

  • Step two: add alcohol.

...

Tard

[–]Triseult 6 points7 points ago

I love that statement, especially when it's said to justify not exercising at all. Kind of like my smoker friends who caution me against the health risks of a vegan diet. (Not vegan myself, but the arguments are really entertaining.)

[–]GnomeInvasion 3 points4 points ago

Yet there are several athletes this year who are near or in their 40s or even older. Injuries happen, but dedication and willpower overcome those, despite the severity.

[–]peace_off 4 points5 points ago

But for every athlete who makes it, there are dozens who doesn't.

[–]afxtal 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, that's why I chose not to be an olympic athlete.

A former lab partner for two classes in college is in the Olympics...

Feels bad man.

[–]DBuckFactory 3 points4 points ago

I went to high school and college with Ryan Lochte. I was never good friends with him, but I've seen him around and met him.

That is me at work on Mondays.

I was a bit surprised at how lightly muscles some of the swimmers were...but I guess that's mostly about streamlining

[–]vote4petro 2 points3 points ago

As a competitive swimmer, most swimmers' muscles are long and slimmer due to the type of movement they're doing. It also depends on what stroke they're proficient at - backstroke uses different muscles than butterfly. But in general, you'll find most swimmers assume a torpedo shape.

[–]PhiladelphiaIrish 10 points11 points ago

When you're talking about this type of fit athelete, I feel otherwise.

[–]bilbro_swaggins 7 points8 points ago

Wah I didn't put countless hours into diet and exercise and don't look like people who dedicate their lives to fitness

[–]yojdizzle 8 points9 points ago

Garfield?

[–]Stompystomp 3 points4 points ago

Sleepy?

[–]brokensys 2 points3 points ago

Fair enough, but take it from me, someone who was in that position a year ago, it doesn't take a whole lot to become more fit. Start doing some sort of exercise you like and go from there.

[–]boonastified 3 points4 points ago

I'm guessing the Olypmpics aren't the first and only thing to make you feel like that

[–]buttplugbiter 9 points10 points ago

The Olympics are inspiring !

They are not taunting you. they are not demeaning you, their bodies are not comparing themselves to your body.

These Olympians are out there, competing at the top level in activities they enjoy ! These people are passionate about sport and athletics, and you can be too.

While watching the olympics, look for events that really stick with you, really get you going and make you want to throw your bag of doritos trans fats to the floor and scream I WANT TO DO THAT.

Then go fucking do it.

Or, you know, sit at home and cry and dip your greasy fat doritos into your greasy fat tears.

[–]Vakuza 5 points6 points ago

[–]FifeeBoy 2 points3 points ago

God damn it, now I feel sad.

[–]palordrolap 2 points3 points ago

Yeah. I found out a couple of years ago that I'm not that distantly related to an Australian Olympian who is about the same age as me. That was a surprise and also makes me wonder what could have been.

Then again, I only ever showed promise at sprinting, and I'm well under 6 feet tall, so I doubt I could have won any medals at it.

[–]AJam 0 points1 point ago

upvoted for cute cat. that is all.

[–]KoreanTerran 3 points4 points ago

[–]kookydad 0 points1 point ago

If masturbation was an Olympic sport I'd probably do very well. Gold in the in sprint, gold in the marathon, just wanna stay away from the relay race.. gives a whole new meaning too the term pass the baton

I think the same. So many different classes and sports that I could have worked on and be one of the best at.

Then I realise that I'm a fireman and save peoples lives for a living. Throwing a cannonball really far seems a bit shit in comparison.

[–]DBuckFactory 2 points3 points ago

What if you could do both?

Ninja Edit: Not to diminish the importance of your job. My father was a fireman and my brother-in-law to be is one as well. I know there is a decent amount of down time, though. I just don't know if throwing a cannonball would take up more than the down time. Olympians don't really make money from the Olympics, so I'm sure most of them have some sort of side job.

[–]Dejimon 2 points3 points ago

It's inspiring how well you accept mediocrity.

While what you're doing is noble, don't slag off people that put in tremendous amounts of effort to be the best at what they do. It only makes you sound like a bitter jerk.

[–]RobertTheSpruce 1 point2 points ago

I probably am a little bitter. I only have one medal. A guy who can throw a heavy thing quite well will get lots.
