I hope Civ 6 looks like this. -xpost r/pics (i.imgur.com)

What's this from? A real life location, or a CGI? I can't tell.
edit: Nvm, found it. Somebody did a mockup of this as a Civ V city. Hilarious: http://i.imgur.com/jGuRD.jpg
[–]SudburySaturdayNightKing 79 points80 points81 points 10 days ago
The location of the pyramid is about right.
[–]bartonarNoble 22 points23 points24 points 10 days ago
And that Taj Mahal there.
[–]AtzunewPrince 3 points4 points5 points 10 days ago
Stonehenge as well.
[–]leafinthewindEmperor 33 points34 points35 points 10 days ago
Not to be picky or anything, but those roads are far too well laid out. For this to be Civ 5, there needs to be a few loops in it or something! :P
[–]itshouldjustglideEmperor 15 points16 points17 points 10 days ago
I think what it is that the peasants laid down those roads... the national highways just suck.
[–]WrightJustice 4 points5 points6 points 10 days ago
Port Isaac.
[–]Throlkim 2 points3 points4 points 10 days ago
Aye, Port Isaac in Cornwall, UK.
[–]EvthmaNoble 2 points3 points4 points 10 days ago
Doc Martin lives there!
[–]WrightJustice 2 points3 points4 points 9 days ago
Indeed he does. :P
[–]G-ZeuZSettler 27 points28 points29 points 10 days ago
I hope not, would totaly destroy my computer.
[–]Vytral 8 points9 points10 points 10 days ago
Civ5 is pretty heavy on pcs in the late game just because of the AIs planning their moves.
[–]iDiedYesterday 2 points3 points4 points 10 days ago
That really depends on your processor. Late game, the decision never take more than 10 seconds for an i7-2600 processor.
[–]smegkw31 3 points4 points5 points 10 days ago
Its nor that bad if you have a $ 300 processor. Also, Crysis 3 runs great on my 590 x3 sli.
[–]FuLLMeTaL604 4 points5 points6 points 10 days ago
Crysis 3 you say?
[–]itshouldjustglideEmperor 3 points4 points5 points 9 days ago
this is a funny guy
[–]Takoulya 0 points1 point2 points 7 days ago
i5 Sandy Bridge here, terrible speeds on large maps. Some games they're fine, but other I get upwards of 45 seconds loading time.
[–]subshift 42 points43 points44 points 10 days ago
Graphic need no change from my opinion. We need more focus on government's systems(Politics) and the reaction of population to it, and of course a better AI.
[–]Vytral 6 points7 points8 points 10 days ago
The AI is kinda bad but I shudder to think how complex the script of an AI has to be in order to compete with a human on even ground (withouth deity cheats)
[–]subshift 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
I am not saying is bad, I am just saying AI needs improvements because games like CIV are built around challenging AIs. So it's always 100x better to improve AI than anything else even if people think that AI is perfect.
[–]gyuunuu 0 points1 point2 points 9 days ago
we would create skynet probably. do we dare? especially when it enters the atomic age?
[–]Vytral 0 points1 point2 points 8 days ago
well would he be much worse than Gandhi anyway?
[–]highskymarshallChieftain 10 points11 points12 points 10 days ago
This. Having non-uniform polygons like in the screenshot would destory the AI.
[–]hylje 6 points7 points8 points 10 days ago
The AI works on a more abstract level than shapes of terrain. It's the humans that get confused when presented with weird topography.
[–]highskymarshallChieftain 0 points1 point2 points 9 days ago
Maybe. Honestly, can't say I know how Civ V AI works, just guessing.
[–]NimX3 0 points1 point2 points 9 days ago
That's how all AI work. AI is still a young science, and emulating the human mind is no easy task.
[–]Seronei 5 points6 points7 points 10 days ago
They need to reduce the time between turns.
[–]finakSettler 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
Absolutely they need to fix the AI. But it would be kind of great if civ looked like a standard day in /r/earthporn. I mean, it's a nice thought.
[–]Ampatent 49 points50 points51 points 10 days ago
This generation of gaming has jaded me on the concept of "next-gen graphics". I don't care about how the game looks anymore, most games that are released look fine. I'd much rather the budget that was going towards improving graphics be added to the budget for gameplay innovation.
[–]NULLACCOUNT 17 points18 points19 points 10 days ago
Strangely I have become more attracted to graphics as I have grown older. Part of it is just from a UI standpoint (you can pack more detail in high resolution scenes which increased feedback to the player), but also as far as more indie games having good artistic styles. It doesn't have to be realistic, but I do like it when a game looks good now much more than I did when I was younger. Of course gameplay is ultimately all the matters, but a good presentation does go a long way in making games 'fun'.
[–]qovneobKing 2 points3 points4 points 10 days ago
Trine 2 is a good example of this. For a standard platformer they could have gotten away with simple graphics but there is a lot of attention to detail that really adds to the aesthetic value.
[–]itshouldjustglideEmperor 5 points6 points7 points 10 days ago
Personally, I even have trouble with some of the more "realistic" games. They just feel wrong. Give me a game like Half-Life 2 over a game like Battlefield 3 any day.
Games have to feel fun in addition to actually being fun...there's no other way to put it.
If I wanted to drudge around in a realistic environment, going realistic speeds, I'd go outside.
[–]NULLACCOUNT 4 points5 points6 points 10 days ago
I do wish more strategic games were more realistic. Paradox Interactive games or Defcon (or Wargames: European Escalation) for example. Particularly in RTS's having the scale be so warped as it is in SC or even in Civ (particularly at normal speed, where entire eras can go by before your army reaches the enemy) has started to bother me. But fun games are always fun too, just I think there is room for both and I would like more realistic scale games that are fun also.
[–]itshouldjustglideEmperor 4 points5 points6 points 10 days ago
Mainly, the thing that gets me is that you either have a game that's too easy, or a game that gives you relatively no reward for your input(realistic). Both of these things are bad. Video games should be an escape from reality, not a simulator of reality to the point where your actions mean nothing.
[–]pbenKing 9 points10 points11 points 10 days ago
Yea life sucks, a 6 billion multi-player game. The graphics are great but starting position is so important. If you get a bad start you are totaly screwed for the rest of the game.
[–]itshouldjustglideEmperor 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
Well.... are you trying to run me over with the pity train?
[–]pbenKing 1 point2 points3 points 9 days ago
Sorry, I just riffing off your ecape form reality because reality really sucks for a good chunk of the world. If you can afford to run Civ then you got a great start. The great thing about Civ is you can always restart and maybe it will be better next time. That doesn't seem to work for reality, or does it?
[–]itshouldjustglideEmperor 0 points1 point2 points 9 days ago
Well... I don't think that my position is equal with someone living in South Sudan, but certainly modern society is not completely free of its own woes. To assert so would be to be full up with the idea that there is order inherent in the world- there isn't, it's an illusion. We must all stake out our place in life, no matter where we are, and it is always nice to take a break from that monotony and enslavement to someone else's illusion, so we can live in an illusion of our own choosing for awhile, is it not(see Fight Club)?
To sum it up, we can never understand another's perspective without having lived their life, so why pretend to be so knowledgeable, and in turn, limit ourselves to a life with emotion stunted for the greater purpose, even when no one's watching or even truly caring, beyond some arbitrary claim to the moral high ground?
To explain the depth of this post, I just drank a cup of coffee in the afternoon. I haven't had coffee in 3 weeks.
Whoa this has gotten far to deep for a video game thread. I just hope that we can play the all the games until we get a good finish. May the next game be better.
[–]painapplez 1 point2 points3 points 4 days ago
I really like the way Defcon looks though.
You're a military commander viewing the world on a tactical map from a bunker. They didn't have hi-res google maps during the cold war.
[–]NightHawk929Emperor 0 points1 point2 points 9 days ago
Yeah, in all honesty, even if it looked like Civ III I'd be fine (Civ II would be a bit far for me) as long as it actually played like the sixth instalment of a game should.
[–]Rubrum_ 10 points11 points12 points 10 days ago
You're gonna get a bunch of answers from purists and civ elites about how graphics aren't important and stuff. I dunno, I love evolution. Apparently graphics and gameplay are mutually exclusive.
[–]llamapower13Prince 4 points5 points6 points 10 days ago
I agree. And even if they were, they could work to improve both for the next release.
[–]baibars 2 points3 points4 points 10 days ago
It'd be cool if you could zoom in really close. I mean you already can zoom in pretty close, but one of my favorite things to do in the game is to just zoom in all the way and check out my cities/empire. I did that in Civ IV too, which had the added bonus of playing your civ's theme music if you zoomed in close enough.
[–]Rubrum_ 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
Yes, I miss the civ music feature when you zoom in.
[–]rashondala 5 points6 points7 points 9 days ago
I just wish there was a city viewer like in Civ III
[–]painapplez 0 points1 point2 points 4 days ago
That was awesome.
Especially when the game shit the bed in all sorts of ways and granaries became satellites.
[–]blackfett 3 points4 points5 points 10 days ago
Looks like Port Wenn (Port Isaac)...
[–]_Blueshift 2 points3 points4 points 10 days ago
Yep, it is Port Isaac. Here's another angle and the Google Maps location.
[–]shadowofmeadowPrince[] 5 points6 points7 points 10 days ago
I don't. There's no way my computer will be able to run it.
[–]threecasks 2 points3 points4 points 10 days ago
I already have to switch to 'strategic view' after about turn 30, I'm on lowest graphics settings too.
It's like I'm playing a pretty Civ 1, except I can't use the number-pad to move around. yay.
[–]iqtrm 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
Did they remove numpad moving in Gods & Kings? Cause I'm sure I used it in Civ V vanilla.
[–]threecasks 0 points1 point2 points 7 days ago
I've not even tried since they introduced hex-tiles, tbh. Think that was in Civ 3 or 4, can't actually remember right now.
[–]DCLID 2 points3 points4 points 10 days ago
I'm torn, I'd love to see graphics advance this far, but I'd also like to actually be able to PLAY it on a computer that wouldn't break the bank.
[–]NULLACCOUNT 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
A little off topic but have you seen Wargames: European Escalation? It isn't a civ style game at all (it's an RTS with no base management), but it does have vaguely similar graphics.
[–]kill_a_man 3 points4 points5 points 10 days ago
I play that! Those graphics are are like that. One thing I don't understand is the steep roads on the hills..
[–]pdboddy 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
As long as we don't need Cray supercomputers to run the game.
[–]dscrd 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
I totally hope it can be made to look like this Civ5's 2d hex mode -- could even be the default. It's the only way to play the damn thing.
[–]Vault_15 1 point2 points3 points 10 days ago
I hope not because then I'd have to buy a new computer :(
[–]duxup 0 points1 point2 points 10 days ago
Give us some more stability and such first ;)
[–]morristhehorrisChieftain 0 points1 point2 points 9 days ago
And it will probably have the map made out of nonagons...
[–]rightfuture 0 points1 point2 points 8 days ago*
If you want to play something like Civ 6 today, then I recommend you try Caveman2Cosmos, A CIV 4 mod that has more good ideas than CIV 6 will likely ever have. And it is getting better, every month. Don't take my word for it, check it out yourself. :)
Caveman2Cosmos http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=449
I just don't want you to miss out on something that could be great! They already have new Eras including Prehistoric, Future, and Alternate ones, New Terrain, Living Animals, Improved Game-play and AI, and they are looking to add new features like a Galactic Era (including space mods like the Final Frontier), navigable rivers, and multi-maps in the near future. This is no half-way attempt.
V24 -
The feature list doesn't do it justice, it's the gameplay.
524 + Techs in tech tree. * 450+ Units total. * 1200 + Buildings. * 130+ HEROES. * 107 New Random events. * 184+ Wonders. * 102 National wonders. * 109 Civic options. * 108 Improvements for terrain. * 33 Unit categories, modern units are superior to ancient units. * 184+ Resources. * 25 Projects. * 6 New Route types. * 4 New Citizen types. * 14 New Religions. * 7 New Civic categories. * 2 New Map sizes: Giant (54% bigger than Huge), Gigantic (50% bigger than Giant ie. 134% bigger than Huge). * 2 New Gamespeed: Blitz 215 turns, Snail 3000 turns. * AI Autoplay. * Better BTS AI 0.84b. * Corporation specific buildings. * Civic specific buildings. * Dynamic Civ Names. * Enhanced Interface (BUG 4.3 mod). * Ethnically Diverse Units. * Cultural Citystyles 0.95. * Faster expansion in late game: Colonists and Pioneers build cities with preset buildings. * Fight in the future era with futuristic units. * Influence Driven War. * Inquisition, destroy religions. * Modified Civics. * Modified Religions (each religion is more unique). * More game alerts, extra information about cities and diplomacy options. * New promotions (for air units too). * New unit flags for Civilizations. * Revolutions. * Ranged Bombardment. * Sevopedia. * Super Spies (promotions for spies). * Supports maximum of 50 players. * Tech conquest, conquering enemy cities boosts your research. * Tech diffusion, civs can't fall too far behind in tech race. * Unit order enhancements, icons show each units current task. * Unofficial Patch 1.40. * Upgradeable buildings. * User configurable options (see: BUG options and C2C Config.ini). + much more, see C2C Concepts pedia pages in-game. Oh, and it's fun.
It is the only active descendant of ROM-Rise of Mankind (the biggest CIV IV mod ever), and AND - Rise of Mankind -A New Dawn (ROM's even more massive improvement), and takes CIV to a whole new level by itself; thousands of adjustments and new ideas.
You would hope CIV 6 plays like this, and it's a free mod that's open to new ideas, and participation.
This is your chance to see all the best ideas end up in CIV. It may not be as pretty, but it is a lot more likely to explore all the features and possibilities you want to see. and it's improving.
For the love of CIV!, try Caveman2Cosmos, and be a part of making the next CIV today. I think it's highly likely that you won't be disappointed. :)

If it happens, I think I'll quit gaming altogether.
