Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

I'm glad we've evolved to the point that saying the entire bit is no longer necessary, saves a lot of time.

This here, this gets a medal, all the up-votes to you. Great episode of TNG and an incredibly on point link, fascinating way language changes, perhaps the Reddit of the future will only be gifs, what am I talking about that's Reddit right now.

technically it's an anti bubble

[–]iama_brick 3 points4 points ago

They then need to put a smaller droplet of water in the bubble of air inside a droplet of water inside a bubble of air in space.

[–]iampayette 6 points7 points ago

there are microscopic vaporized particles of water suspended in that air... which must have dissolved air molecules inside of them...

[–]Snookerman 1 point2 points ago

[–]Putidri 39 points40 points ago

Sorry Reddit, it's NOT Dr. Evil. It's the Dutch astronaut André Kuipers http://i.imgur.com/7zxyi.jpg, whom you all know of course thanks to the "11244 Andrekuipers" main belt asteroid http://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=11244

[–]henkiedepenkie 3 points4 points ago

He's only well known with Dutch school children, he spend half his time in the space station talking to and growing plants with them. Still he had some time to pose for this wonderful photograph.

[–]DOLLAR_POST 3 points4 points ago

He did much more up there than just talking to children, things also of great value. Perhaps also things of lesser value, but he was still a great asset to the whole program.

[–]ob3ypr1mus 2 points3 points ago

i still remember doing the big "André Kuipers" test like a million years ago.

[–]KnightsWhoSayNii 2 points3 points ago

Also known to everyone at the aerospace facility at TUDelft. Many think his ideas are quite "out there" and a bit "mad scientist", but that's his appeal (I worked with him before).

Dumbass edit: I'm an idiot, and was thinking of Wubbo Ockels instead of of Andre Kuipers. I meet/worked briefly with both but got the names mixed up.

[–]Lucky_Striker 2 points3 points ago

But he's not as far off his rocker as Chriet Titulaer, the Dutch national futurism guru.

[–]Lenten1 2 points3 points ago

The weird thing is, I've only heard this name once before; in a rap song.

[–]Lucky_Striker 0 points1 point ago

That's quite possible, he is also the Dutch national tech-joke, due to a TV show he had in the '80s and the very strong accent he presented it in.

Fascinating to watch again because it's 30 years old, but could as well be 300... Where his fantastic beard does not help.

[–]Lenten1 0 points1 point ago

For the Dutch: Dio ft. De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig - Ruimteschip

[–]Eloquium 2 points3 points ago

For the rest of the world: The Dutch apologize for this music.

[–]polandpower 1 point2 points ago

Deeply apologize. Just after the world had gotten over 90's hardcore..

[–]Lenten1 0 points1 point ago

You just can't hate on DJVT. While this is not a great song, it's still a funny one when not taken seriously. Just like a lot of their songs.

[–]Eloquium 0 points1 point ago

I was mainly talking about Dio though. De Jeugd have actually created something original a few times!

Unfortunately, most Dutch hip-hop is terrible, in my opinion... Got any tips?

[–]Lucky_Striker 1 point2 points ago

And for those wondering: No, it's not Ronnie James Dio. Not by a long shot.

[–]KnightsWhoSayNii -1 points0 points ago

Leave it to Dutch rap to be able to sing progressively about astronauts.. also about niggas, bitches n' shit.

[–]mahade 1 point2 points ago

I'm a Dutch guy and I haven't heard about any of his out-there ideas, could you share a few interesting ones? Always interesting to know what our local greater minds think about :)

[–]KnightsWhoSayNii 3 points4 points ago

Solar panels EVERYWHERE. I do a lot of sustainable studies and research and he throws a lot of easy on paper, hard on applicability ideas.

One idea was to cover the entire "Afsluitdijk" with solar panels which would be able to theoretically power every car on that long dyke road. Obviously this means a larger problem of converting to electric cars (which aren't yet all that sustainable ATM for different reasons).

Another idea is the "Superbus" which I had the pleasure of doing some minor work with carbon-fiber. It's part taxi, part bus, part train, part sports car, all electric, some 80% carbon-fiber (and part man-bear-pig). It's basically a shared taxi that goes 300km/h which sounds awesome until you realise you'd need to build special designated roads for just that vehicle, to reach those speeds safely. It's an awesome concept yet difficult to integrate with the Dutch transport network.

Edit: as pointed before, I am accidentally talking about Wubbo Ockels instead of Andre Kuipers. I'm a dumbass.

[–]R_Schuhart 0 points1 point ago

Ha, i remember that idea from a lecture at UU, where (environmental) policy scientists were debating how plans can go wrong if engineers and beta scientists come up with technical solutions without proper policy implementation or problem analysis/management. I think he is the subject of more then one joke...

He comes across as a genuinely nice guy, but i always get the feeling that he can be very tiring at times.

[–]Denathe 1 point2 points ago

You're speaking of (atleast with the superbus) our only other astronaut Wubbo Ockels inventions, not Andre Kuiper's..

Ockels had a brain aneurysm some years ago btw, why he's slower etc now.

[–]KnightsWhoSayNii 0 points1 point ago

You're correct, I'm an idiot for thinking of the wrong guy. I meet both briefly and got them mixed up

[–]mahade -1 points0 points ago

Hmm. Well, I guess thinking big is one way to leave your footprints behind. If he would cover the Afsluitdijk with solar panels and applies that to the regular powergrid (instead of cars) that would probably create a lot of clean power.

Being able to charge electric cars, though... does he mean that they are charged whilst driving on the road? Because that would be awesome in many ways. Conceptually unique and a great way to stimulate electric car use, especially if use of that road is free.

The Superbus seems impractical beyond reason, but... is a separate lane could be created on highways spanning several cities stemming from one central hub it might work, think about Utrecht being the central city, then straight lines leading to:

  • Amsterdam (40 km)
  • Rotterdam (55 km)
  • Groningen (180 km)
  • Arnhem (65 km)
  • Eindhoven (90 km)
  • Maastricht (180 km) (one stop in Eindhoven)
  • Enschede (140 km)

If it's affordable it would be quite incredible, actually. Depends heavily on the capacity of the bus and how frequently they'll drive. If one leaves every 10 minutes (on the condition of being at least 50% full) it would make sense...

Or even better: screw the NS and replace all public (non-transport) train tracks with designated roads for the Superbus. That way a little bit of frost, leafs or rain won't make the NS panic and stop everything :P

[–]lily_gulmohar 18 points19 points ago

I wonder how many here can explain what's with the inverted/reverted position of the reflections?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Zippy129 10 points11 points ago

That is pretty much correct, but in this case, because the drop of water acts as a converging lens, and as the mans face is quite clearly outside of the focal point of this lens, the image will appear as enlarged and inverted. This is then nullified by the fact that there is another converging lens in the form of the air bubble.

[–]AverageGiraffe 7 points8 points ago

Science up in this mother fucker!

Keyser Söze?

[–]Syclops 1 point2 points ago

I'm not a buoyancy expert by any means, so i have some questions: if the water was still, would the air remain inside of the bubble? For an extended period of time? would it be possible to put another water droplet in the middle of the air? or would the bubble just disperse in all directions (because of lack of gravity).

[–]someotherdudethanyou 0 points1 point ago

I've been debating the first question for a while with my dad.

In the absence of gravitational acceleration, the air bubble wouldn't float to the surface, but we're not sure if there would be any significant centering force. It seems to me the surface tension of the water could hold the air bubble in a stable equilibrium for a while, but I'm not sure how long.

If you put another water droplet in the middle of the air it would not immediately disperse, but if it got too close to the edge of the water it would be encouraged to merge with the rest of the water. It would be essentially the same as a drop of water in the air of a spaceship. It would float around as a droplet, but eventually collide with the wall.

I just searched this and was pretty surprised with what I saw. It looks like the bubbles are much more stable than I thought. I did not realize, but water is able to bounce rather well. So even though it will eventually hit the wall of the bubble, if it does so with a moderate velocity it will bounce off instead of sticking to the wall. Pretty cool.

Definitely check this video out.
