i am SO licking this toad

[–]IntoTheBrevityThing 64 points65 points ago

My wife said " that is so not going to blend in with anything but the 80's"

[–]804R 1 point2 points ago

Funny, because that's my hair color (black/purple). look at my username

[–]NickConrad 39 points40 points ago

Let me look into that for you:

The conspicuous or aposematic coloration of A. varius likely serves as a warning to potential predators of the toxicity of the frog's integument which contains tetrodotoxin, a potent neurotoxin

Wonder what tetrodotoxin is... hmm....

TTX is roughly 100 times more poisonous than potassium cyanide.

Yeah, don't lick this frog. Its skin is coated in kill you.

[–]WolfInTheField 10 points11 points ago

Coated in kill you

I like this phrase a lot.

[–]hypnoderp 2 points3 points ago

It's a sodium channel blocker, like what's in puffer fish. I wouldn't advise it.

[–]Tomrockhold 0 points1 point ago

I was waitin for GLaDOS to make a NEUROTOXIN comment... ;-)

[–]kurfu 0 points1 point ago

Yup - pretty colors usually mean that particular species has never needed to evolve a camouflage coloration to hide from predictors because they can fuck your shit up.

[–]souleh 1 point2 points ago

100? More like 10,000 times more lethal!

[–]teh_tg 0 points1 point ago

I don't know squat about biology, but even I know to run away if I see that.

[–]wbmason 29 points30 points ago

TRON fights for the users

[–]yur_mom 37 points38 points ago

[–]Osiris32 24 points25 points ago

I'm not not licking toads.

[–]50lerp 4 points5 points ago

(O) (O)

[–]Theorex 9 points10 points ago

"This thing is going to get us so high..." commonly heard last words.

[–]teh_tg 0 points1 point ago

I'm from Texas. Around here, it's "Hold my beer for a second. Watch this!"

[–]killroy901 7 points8 points ago

A toad THAT colorful and exotic ? I wouldn't advise it.

[–]psyEDk 2 points3 points ago

yeah, you know it's gotta be mad crazy hallucinogenic

[–]Womec 2 points3 points ago

Yeah the kind that rip your literally rip your brain apart and you slowly die.

[–]Canadian_Infidel 10 points11 points ago

You would be transported to another dimension.

[–]HaudNomen 6 points7 points ago

I suppose Hell counts as another dimension...

[–]jbass3000 0 points1 point ago

...for science.

[–]gs5555 0 points1 point ago

You can't just lick toads. You have to take a Colorado boulder toad and milk it's poison glands. Wait till it dries out then smoke the 5-MeO-DMT that remains. Shit will make you trip balls.

[–]patrik667 1 point2 points ago

My first though! Holy crap... I got in this thread to post:

"I want to lick that so badly, even though it's probably the most poisonous thing in that jungle"

[–]lebowskisweater -3 points-2 points ago

ARUGULA!

[–]iAmericA45 56 points57 points ago

Looks like a kid scribbled on a black frog with a purple crayon.

[–]neayaa 127 points128 points ago

Because it's fake.

This seems to be the real shit:

http://rastreadordenoticias.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/atelopus.jpg

[–][deleted] 89 points90 points ago

Why would someone go to all that trouble to make a fake one when the real one already looks like that?

[–]Oragif 139 points140 points ago

The perfect crime.

[–]bamdrew 24 points25 points ago

just brightened up and shifted the purpley color to a more bright magenta/pink color in ye olde fotoshoppe.

probably took them 45 seconds.

[–]Brisco_County_III 22 points23 points ago

No, the markings in the original link image are drawn from scratch, there's no resemblance in their form besides a general line-width and color. They're pretty clearly just scribbles.

Edit: Since people are getting up in arms about this despite having no idea how markings work, and these seriously being obvious scribbles, let me explain to you how patterns are generated, biologically, and what I mean by "form". It was late, and this takes some time to explain.

The way you get random patterns of color is not truly random; it's due to gradients of hormones. Here's a solid (and relatively comprehensible) article on how this happens in mice.

This is not trivial; it's not just a matter of "oh, this part should be purple and this should be black, and just, uh, genetics!" It happens by a specific mechanism. Effectively, each of those patches of color is due to a cluster of cells that is generating a signaling molecule. As the levels of that molecule drop off moving away from that cluster, the cells that have coloration in the skin respond; in this case, for example, they generate a purple color when the signaling molecule is at concentrations between, say, 70% and 40% of maximum. When signaling molecules drop off to near zero, at a sufficient distance from another cluster, this allows new clusters of cells to begin generating the molecule. (There is also active inhibition happening, with the gradient going from 100% of one chemical to 100% of an active inhibitor, but this has the same practical result). Same principle happens for everything that has color patterns.

You know who figured out how all this signaling and inhibition worked? Alan fucking Turing.

SO: My problem with the illustration (which is what it is) is that it has no "center-out" form like you would expect based on how damn near everything generates color patterns. It's random scribbles, when that is not how spots and stripes are biologically generated. Compare the pattern complexity (how many times it switches from purple to black and vice versa) in the actual animal versus the illustration: The illustration is inconsistent, has vastly more switching, and has no center-out organization.

[–]aardvark445 15 points16 points ago

Costa Rican VARIABLE harlequin toad.

[–]Brisco_County_III 1 point2 points ago

Fine, I'll explain. It's edited.

[–]Booshur 4 points5 points ago

Come on guys. Look at the pixels.

[–]Brisco_County_III 1 point2 points ago

It's not the pixels, it's the lines. I've edited for an explanation of how patterns work.

[–]Womec 0 points1 point ago

Cause every frog looks EXACTLY the same right?

[–]Brisco_County_III 0 points1 point ago

Edited for explanation.

[–]bamdrew 0 points1 point ago

Many thanks for your clarification; I did not look at the image nearly close enough.

[–]whatwouldscoobydo 1 point2 points ago

After looking at this image and several others, I would have to agree with you. Even though the color is certainly able to occur naturally, as in this one, there is clearly a pattern that the markings follow. Even other colors seem to follow somewhat of a pattern. I don't know much of the biology, but I have a good eye for what is natural. There's a specific aesthetic quality to natural organization that simply seems off in the posted image. Glad there is some science to back up that intuitive feeling. (& thanks for the links, they were cool).

[–]Brisco_County_III 1 point2 points ago

Oh yeah, you can definitely develop an accurate but completely intuitive understanding of this without knowing why. Humans are astoundingly good at pattern recognition!

[–]whatwouldscoobydo 1 point2 points ago

It's true! I've been reading about this phenomenon in a book called Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking by Malcolm Gladwell. It's pretty cool stuff. Our subconscious often knows or picks up on much more than we do, and it sometimes takes a while for that to migrate to the conscious mind- if it ever does at all. Sometimes it just manifests as a feeling or intuitive sense with seemingly no explanation. But there is an explanation, and it is super-cool science.

[–]youcuntingfaggot -1 points0 points ago

your conclusion may be correct, but the way you got there was dog shit

[–]Brisco_County_III 1 point2 points ago

I didn't bother explaining thoroughly, because it's somewhat complex. I have now edited.

[–]neayaa 6 points7 points ago

To practice 3D modelling / photoshopping skills.

[–]Womec 1 point2 points ago

Its looks exactly the same as the original how is it fake lol?

[–]neayaa 1 point2 points ago

Because it's a 3D model with a badly hand-drawn texture.

[–]Queefmonlee 0 points1 point ago

Saw the name and expected the frog to look like two-face. Was disappointed.

[–]benaduggan 16 points17 points ago

I have never seen this toad :o and i live in Costa Rica.

[–]TicaVerde 7 points8 points ago

Same. But can one really see all of the creatures in costa rica?

[–]metatronscube 8 points9 points ago

I have lived in Scotland all my life and I have never seen a hairy haggis, so I understand where you are coming from.

[–]LadyCheeba 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't matter when you can see muthafuckin' sloths everyday.

Silly toad! Take off those jams! You are a toad, not a 90's teen!

[–]tits_hemingway 5 points6 points ago

Seriously, hot pink detailing on black stuff was awesome. So edgy.

[–]klobbermang 4 points5 points ago

I was thinking the street gangs from Batman Forever

[–]ProxyMuncher 4 points5 points ago

Picture 2 is so 90s my hair was blasted into a bowl cut and N-SYNC started playing in the background.

I agree, it's very hard to stomach.

[–]travisgray 2 points3 points ago

I came in to comment "more like early 90s toad!" but you beat me to it.

[–]came_here_2_say 1 point2 points ago

I really wish this style would come back...

[–]destructifier 1 point2 points ago

I'm lucky. I was wearing hand-me-downs from the eighties during this era.

[–]AbsoluteZro 4 points5 points ago

I'm not sure you know what 'luck' means.... You missed out on some pretty rad clothing.

[–]Fantasticriss 1 point2 points ago

what a mixed up decade for fashion...

[–]robbiedo 1 point2 points ago

I am so retroactively embarrassed that I wore those to the gym.

[–]unsurebutwilling 1 point2 points ago

Don't be. You look awesome!

[–]lucas-hanson 1 point2 points ago

Ah, the 90's, when being at the pinnacle of fashion put you at, like, a six.

[–]Unlucky13 1 point2 points ago

Almost thirty years gone and this style still makes me so uncomfortable just to look at. It just looks so bad... those dull colors... the elastic wrist and ankles... gahhhh

[–]firstcut 0 points1 point ago

Pretty sure those pants are rolled. Dull colors???

[–]cojafoji 0 points1 point ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

and to think when i was a kid I worried about growing up and having to figure out which clothes would match with what. Luckily that changed.

[–]neayaa 8 points9 points ago

I assume this is shopped until I see this pic from a reliable source.

[–]LizzardFish 10 points11 points ago

This photo is shopped, however the toad is real. There is a photo of a real one in another comment in this thread ..

[–]GreenOwl 8 points9 points ago

Definitely shopped. These frogs are pretty variable in the wild - and the pink/purple ones would be few and far between. Some of the other morphs are pretty damn cool though:

A. zeteki

A. varius

A. barbotini seems to be the population with the pink/purple frogs.

[–]jamdrumsspace 1 point2 points ago

Uhhhh...I googled Costa Rican Variable Harlequin Toad and there's a pile of hits and pics.

[–]neayaa 2 points3 points ago

So there's two different pictures on google images for this thing (where it is purple). And in this version the purple looks way more saturated and artificial.

Plus the ground and shadows look very fake.

I'm pretty sure this is rendered and someone drew the squiggles by hand.

[–]Draiko 4 points5 points ago

Aka the Lisa frank toad.

[–]chindogubot 2 points3 points ago

It's hard to read those variables with that horrible handwriting.

[–]no_no_NO_okay 1 point2 points ago

What makes it variable?

[–]gflipxd 1 point2 points ago

That looks poisonous as faaaaawk

[–]defenestrator828 0 points1 point ago

I used to love this kind of stuff! I had a poison dart frog wallpaper border in my room when I was a kid growing up. When I was a college student and only lived at my parents' for the summer they were re-doing my room (among other rooms) including a new paint job, and planned to remove the border. I said I would do it and, in secret, my now-wife and I saved a piece of it for our scrapbook.

TL;DR: This toad is awesome (IMHO)

[–]MantorokBeatsAll 0 points1 point ago

This is my pet frog. I cast enchant item on him so Chattur'gha, Xel'lotath and Ulyaoth couldn't hurt him.
