Also known as a Phylogenetic tree.

Good to see that humans are the clockwisiest of the twigs

Good luck trying to explain to creationists how to read it.

[–]meantamrajean 2 points3 points ago

I'm not a creationist... And I would paint myself as having slightly above average intelligence... But this chart is a whole lotta "wtf???" for me.

[–]Doomshock 0 points1 point ago

Seems simple enough, center is earliest time, edges are current?

[–]qpstrafe 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, very straightforward diagram.

[–]meantamrajean 0 points1 point ago

Right but if that's the case it puts life as having started at the point the earth formed... Like the same day... Oh who cares, it's neat to just see the tree.

[–]Antares42 1 point2 points ago

it puts life as having started at the point the earth formed

Nope. Look closely. "Earth Birth" is in the middle (Wikipedia says 4.5 bn years ago) while life starts at the first ellipse at 4 bn years ago.

See also here. It is in fact quite amazing that it practically only took a geological blink of an eye from the formation of the planet to the development of first life.

thumbs up I think I get it! Thanks for the links!

Thanks, for explaining it so I didn't.

I don't even have a high school diploma and I can understand it

One thing that I often hear criticized about this particular visualization is that it still somehow conveys the misleading idea that humans are the most advanced, most evolved organisms, sitting on the far right of the diagram.

One must not forget that it's not only "from bacteria to humans", the bacteria themselves have also evolved equally long and arguably even further - humans are but one tiny leaf among the mighty branched tree of life.

My personal favorite is this one here because it captures the relative insignificance of homo sapiens.

I agree though. Great visual explanation nonetheless. :-)

Only? Excellent chart, though. Good find.

[–]Sphinctor 1 point2 points ago

Wow. Nicely Done.

[–]RedbeardUH 1 point2 points ago

Wow! That is glorious.

What's funny is that we're living through a mass extinction right now. Let us work to make sure it doesn't affect any more species than it already has.

[–]WoollyMittens 0 points1 point ago

It's humbling to see mammals hanging on to the very fringe of existence through two mass extinctions before blossoming.

[–]hop_juice 0 points1 point ago

Mammals FTW!

[–]Ra1d3n 0 points1 point ago

The way i read that is "there is one of those mass extinction lines coming up soon". :-/
