They go for max scores around 15-17 points depending on difficulty and event, and then apply deductions for mistakes and form.

Old scoring used to go to 10. Now they have a max score depending on how hard their routine is. So if someone packs a ton into their beam, they start out at a higher score and deductions are made from there. A better routine with a few mistakes will score higher than a safe routine with one mistake.

Gymnast here

There are two major components to a gymnastics score: the base score and the difficulty score. The base score is always 10 for a routine, and the difficulty score is figured out by the skills in the routine itself. The difficulty score is found by adding three main parts: The value of the skills, the value of the element groups, and the value of the additional small rules (which are subject to change every few years). Each skill in gymnastics has a grade and an element group. There are 5 different element groups and 7 different grades (A-G). Each element group is worth .5 points, and each grade is worth .1 points more than the previous one (A=.1, B=.2, C=.3, and so on). The score is found by adding the value of the top 10 highest graded skills together for men (and I think its the top 8 for women) to the value of all the element groups that appear in the routine. Then from this, they add the additional rules (such as connecting certain skills together) and deduct all the errors.

So, for an example, scoring would look something like this for most events (vault and women's floor are slightly different)

10 (base)

+2.5 (5*.5 for each element group)

+3.9 (3 *.3+5 *.4+2 *.5 for 3 C's 5 D's and 2 E's)

+.4 (for some smaller rules such as doing certain skills in sequence)

-.4 (deductions)

=16.4 as the final score

no problem. It all depends on how the gymnast is falling...on the skill she missed here, she can just fall flat and be fine...but if say one of her hands slipped and she was going to land on her head or hit one of the uprights of the bars, he would do what he could to prevent major injury. Usually coaches step back and move mats for landings or whatever, but on big release skills like this they step in as a precaution.
