My family put down our border collie a few years ago and it was one of the few times in the past 10-ish years that I have legitimately cried. He was an awesome dog. He killed squirrels, chased me around the house, and was generally an all-around awesome dog.

But look on the bright side, you don't have to worry about dog hair EVERYWHERE.

Haha yeah, I came to terms with what I would have to do before we even had him put down. I made sure his last moments were happy, not sad, and didn't cry while I was at the vet. It was when I came home to an empty house that the old memories really kicked in.

Yeah, I have a couple friends who have dealt with those types. However, the collies that I've owned were either shelter dumped or found wandering.

I've always wanted to obtain a "breeded for excellence" one, but I never get the chance due to all the strays I end up giving homes. I've got a very weak heart when it comes to dogs... :)

I don't know about the intelligence thing. He loves to eat socks and undies and tissue and cotton balls and foam and anything that's not food and will not digest. This, after an hour run everyday. He has 2 brothers to play with the whole day as well. But once I look at his face, all is forgiven!

I've owned four border collies and done a lot of reading about them; they're pretty much universally considered to be the smartest breeds. And mine were all among the most intelligent dogs I've ever met. But I've definitely met some pretty stupid border collies as well, though.

Weak hips? Never heard of that. I know this may go against the hive-mind however that is an issue in most dogs that are castrated before maturity. Not just border collies. It is caused because sex hormones also affect size location of muscle growth as well as bone growth and density.

Well, actually yes, border collies are extremely prone to hip dysplasia.

I've owned six of them, and they've all had extremely weak hips. I've never met someone with a collie that hasn't had to deal with the issue.

Here are some good reads if you'd like to know more.

EDIT: Granted, if we're taking size into account, it certainly doesnt help that collies fall into the size group that most commonly has hip problems.

Sprollies are lovely dogs and don't suffer from hip problems in my experience. It may be worth looking into a cross breed at some point.

Could be. My dog was a border collie cross-breed too (possibly lab, but we never really knew) and she still ended up with the hip problems around 12-13.

When I was a kid, my dog was always getting into some kind of trouble. He was my best friend though. We used to play for hours and I loved him so much. When he turned 13, he really started to show signs of aging. I didn't want to say goodbye to my best friend though. The night before we had to take him to the vet I sat with him all night. It was a great experience and I cried so much. I was holding him in my arms and just kept talking to him, confident that he could understand me. Then all of the sudden, a miracle happened. He looked right at me, dead in the eye, and said "I need about three-fiddy". It was at that moment I realized my dog was a giant crustacean from the Paleolithic Era
