Mind you fellow redditors

This - is - the - biggest - newspaper - in - austria

And the other one´s do it too, although more subtly, painting the rebels as good and Assad as the ultimate evil.

[–]Ayatrollah_Umadi 260 points261 points ago

And as usual, the biggest newspaper is a shitty newpaper. Krone is the Sun with a slight neonazi twist.

[–]ffilps 71 points72 points ago

yep, we have the "bild zeitung" here. same shit.

[–]onlyalevel2druid 31 points32 points ago

They aren't even Bild Zeitung anymore are they? I thought they were just Bild, because Zeitung implies there's news in it (which is blatantly false)

[–]Rulanda 8 points9 points ago

They are still the Bild Zeitung, they still have news (kind of..) in them, sometimes even on the front page! They are just being called "Bild" because over the years they did establish the logo/name as a thing for itself, but officially it's still the BildZeitung.

[–]d2kx 3 points4 points ago

No. The official name is just "BILD" now.

[–]Rulanda 1 point2 points ago

Ah, seems like you are right. The paper ist just "BILD" now, but they still refer to it as a newspaper.

[–]Intelensprotient 6 points7 points ago

That's an urban legend.

[–]Uhrschnur 7 points8 points ago

2blick" in switzerland

[–]Salyangoz[!] 1 point2 points ago

Hurriyet and Sabah are practically store-bought by the current governmental party. These two along with many others also are being forced to write (or not write depending on the news) selective news and common wrong-factual data.

[–]damnhippie2011 1 point2 points ago

I´ve been to the Frequency-Festival and I saw that the Kronen-Zeitung was Sponsor of the festival... did not make any fucking sense at all.

[–]H4ssi 28 points29 points ago

to put "biggest newspaper" into numbers:

  • the kronen zeitung is estimated to reach about 2.7 million readers

  • to get a feel, what this number means in the context of austria: the number of citizens who are allowed to vote in austria is about 6.3 million people

[–]naffer 22 points23 points ago

Rough translation: Assad's army tanks rolling into "The Mother of All Battles".

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

and the little text directly under the photo translates roughly to : People flee from the landscape of ruins that some parts of Aleppo have become.

edit: got the name wrong

[–]hekmatov 7 points8 points ago

Aleppo*... my hometown :(

[–]naffer 1 point2 points ago

Welcome to Reddit. :)

[–]assholegrammarian 2 points3 points ago

There's nothing rough about your translation.

[–]wd0 21 points22 points ago

Why is something like this even legal?

[–]WernerFailmann 15 points16 points ago

Because they're powerful enough to end the career of any politician who would attempt to make it illegal.

[–]Arcon1337 4 points5 points ago

Millions of. Americans got duped into fighting for a war for oil and money. When that's possible, anything is.

[–]indignant_traveler 36 points37 points ago

*best-selling, not most respected...

[–]deltefknieschlaeger 8 points9 points ago

When you read derstandard (respected) "news articles" (aka APA copy/paste) you get basically the same - if there would be a photoshop for words.

[–]753861429-951843627 9 points10 points ago

That goes a bit far I think, but there's generally a problem with a lack of journalism. Too many articles are just APA reprints with an ideological twist applied.

[–]CowzGoesMoo 32 points33 points ago

Did you see CNN trying to falsify the news about Syria as well?

[–]newpolitics 8 points9 points ago

It's almost as if we're not getting the full picture (forgive the pun) in the western media... this is so surprising i am so surprised

[–]ratzi1991 21 points22 points ago

I am so ashamed of Kronen Zeitung right now ...

[–]DeVilleBT 38 points39 points ago

Took you quite long.

[–]tutufuzi 17 points18 points ago

you should be ashamed of yourself for being ashamed a little bit too late.

[–]DrJosephMosch 2 points3 points ago

Just don't read it. There are plenty of good news recourse in Austria. Read "Die Presse" or listen to FM4 radio to get objective informed.

[–]EverGreenPLO 2 points3 points ago

That is accurate.

[–]Rizzlamuerte[!] 310 points311 points ago

Yay austria on the frontpage... well - fuck

[–]AnyMike 46 points47 points ago

Reddit, please believe me: Not all of us are that stupid and believe everything the "Krone" says. Unfortunately, it's still the biggest and most influential newspaper here. I wish I could say it's also the shittiest, but there's still "Heute" and "Österreich".

[–]Scherzkeks 50 points51 points ago

Hey, we understand. Not all of us Americans listen to (or at least believe) Fox either.

[–]AnyMike 47 points48 points ago

I'm not sure whether it is good or bad when people all around the world are equally embarrased for their media. Probably bad.

[–]norgue 9 points10 points ago

Goddammit you are right. Tells a lot about the current state of democracy, if anything.

[–]JohnDeRol 6 points7 points ago

Glad to hear that!

[–]flukz 2 points3 points ago

It gets even worse than Fox! I down vote any reddit submission that uses infowars or anything related to Alex Jones regardless of whether it's true or not. If it's true, get a better source!

[–]cwl91 69 points70 points ago

Yeah, business as usual,... it's always either Hitler, Fritzl, Neo-Nazis or some other ridiculous stupidity why Austria pops up on reddit! Seems like our golden times are long over...

[–]kay547 42 points43 points ago

You're represented well on /r/CityPorn and /r/VillagePorn, if it's any consolation.

[–]Elemmakil 9 points10 points ago

Beads up! Our Bild "Zeitung" would archive that every other week. The most notable lie... erm... "mistake" might have been this story

[–]Randdist 5 points6 points ago

Either that or mountains and parkbenches under the water.

[–]erisdiscordia 5 points6 points ago

Yeah man, I remember the golden days of redditing from Austria - it was always Franz Joseph's awesome mustache this, or The Melting Pot of Europe that. Almost embarrassing!

[–]lcp 34 points35 points ago

Can anyone confirm the picture in the printed version of the 'Kronen Zeitung', please. If it's real I would suggest informing serious newspapers about it. It's summer time, news are slow and I'm sure it would be happily reported...

[–]deltefknieschlaeger 7 points8 points ago

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151053358948211&set=o.282064592970&type=1

Is (afaik) the original source for the Photo. I could go through the trash from my appartment building - in hope that someone read it yesterday AND already threw it away - but just contact that guy.

(although i already can say that now - it´s 100% not shopped - not worth the work because easily checkable)

[–]NightErrant 3 points4 points ago

Aber gut gephotoshoped. Heheh.

[–]TheAdAgency 13 points14 points ago

I'm sure it would be happily reported

I'm sure said reporter will be happy without a head

[–]Elemmakil 2 points3 points ago

There is already the bildblog (wikipage, original is down) which collects such things from German speaking media. Unless something is serious wrong other media won't jump on that.

[–]lcp 2 points3 points ago

Let's wait and see. I wrote to three austrian newspapers so far.

[–]Cellophanehogwash 59 points60 points ago

One of them is clearly photoshopped, or there is a time machine involved.

[–]R3laX 78 points79 points ago

Or both are photoshoped. But that would be insane...

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

Or none of them are photoshoped. But that would be impossible...

[–]gimmikz 27 points28 points ago

Not impossible: statistically unlikely.

[–]sun_moon_crochet 9 points10 points ago

Or else that couple is just out of this world good at pranking.

[–]eat-your-corn-syrup 2 points3 points ago

you must be a mathematician

[–]aguycalledluke 460 points461 points ago

Oh yes the "Kronenzeitung", quality reading material, like Fox news on paper.

[–]lebrian 284 points285 points ago

We have "The Sun" here in England, it's great for lining the litterbox.

[–]Blade22 265 points266 points ago

I use "Dailymail" for the litterbox, "The Sun" I use it to wipe my sweaty hairy balls after an explosive treadmill session.

[–]DANger_MOuse_ 99 points100 points ago

what exactly is an explosive treadmill session? this is my second time hearing that in a week.

[–]theresnopooinmypants 431 points432 points ago

You run and run until my user name is no longer true.

EDIT: and this one comment nearly matches my magic fantasy points for 8 months... Three more like this and I can send off for my nyan unicorn!

[–]Mystery_Hours 58 points59 points ago

You must have shit your pants when you saw this perfect comment opportunity.

[–]theresnopooinmypants 42 points43 points ago

Ive been waiting for my "redditor for xx months, ill allow this"

[–]Homletmoo 20 points21 points ago

I'm afraid the best I can give you is "Redditor for x months, I'll allow this".

[–]mispelt 16 points17 points ago

Lemme call my buddy Dave. He's an expert in allowing things.

[–]sstonn 8 points9 points ago

Redditor for 8 months. 10/10 will bang.

[–]ImTheGuyWhoLoveGems 2 points3 points ago

Where do you buy socks?

[–]pants_pooper 2 points3 points ago

And how!

[–]Matt92HUN 8 points9 points ago

So I run until you shit your pants?

[–]theresnopooinmypants 7 points8 points ago

And I havent dont that since I was 9, so looks like you have about 19 years of running to do..

[–]Matt92HUN 3 points4 points ago

Forest Gump, at your service.

[–]KilgoreTroutQQ 15 points16 points ago

Sweet Jesus that was an explosive 5k.

[–]oneangryrobot 14 points15 points ago

I would just die out of embarrassment. I feel so sorry for this guy.

[–]lschmidt814 1 point2 points ago

Apparently shitting yourself when running a marathon isn't all that uncommon. People really want to make a good time and when you eat a bowl of pasta before hand it's gonna have to come out at some point.

[–]squonge 2 points3 points ago

I don't know why you'd keep running though. Go wash yourself off for chrisake.

[–]NextName 14 points15 points ago

Well, have you ever eaten Taco Bell, then gone on a long run?

It's kind of like that.

[–]Cromiell 4 points5 points ago

I don't think you want to know.

[–]iamtheowlman 10 points11 points ago

Well Calvin, when physical things move, they create friction by rubbing against one another.

In the case of treadmills, if the person using them is running fast enough (around 88 miles per hour), the person can then rocket themselves through time itself, leaving twin streaks of fire on the treadmill. This often causes it to explode.

[–]sturd 9 points10 points ago

I use "Dailymail" for the litterbox, "The Sun" I use it to wipe my sweaty hairy balls after an explosive treadmill session.

My laughing fit has just rid me of my hangover. Thank you, sir!

[–]Vertyx[!] 1 point2 points ago

You like having inky balls huh?

[–]binary-love 27 points28 points ago

We have.. ehm.. every single newspaper here in Greece.

[–]ewan93 4 points5 points ago

I believe the correct term when referring to that paper is "The Scum"

[–]iamtheowlman 7 points8 points ago

We have a paper very similar in Canada, also called the Sun (The Toronto Sun, Calgary Dun, Vancouver Sun, etc.)

Doesn't have your topless ladies on page 3, I'm sorry to say.

[–]Avengerr 5 points6 points ago

Same here in Canada, though I don't think it's quite as bad as your version.

[–]xereeto 4 points5 points ago

We have it in Scotland, Ireland and Wales as well you know.

[–]Downpaymentblues 2 points3 points ago

I wouldn't even wipe my own arse with it.

[–]Xethos 2 points3 points ago

There's a difference between tabloids and shitty news sources.

[–]hey_steve 2 points3 points ago

American here. The only thing I know about "The Sun" is Page Three.

Keeley Hazell, Lucy Pinder, and Rosie Jones! Oh my!

[–]Zandous85 1 point2 points ago

As an American, is it true in "The Sun" they have something called page3 that shows boobs?

[–]lolopol 75 points76 points ago

Nothing beats "BILD" in Germany.

[–]HitHitHitHitIt 37 points38 points ago

As an Austrian, I have to admit "Krone" does...

[–]graveyarddancer 23 points24 points ago

No. Nothing beats the Bild. I am Austrian too, but there's really nothing worse than the Bild. 'Oesterreich' comes close, really tries damn hard to be the shittiest newspaper in the world, but still... Bild wins.

[–]Influenz-A 3 points4 points ago

:P "Porno-Politiker frisst Penis" könnte glatt drin stehen

[–]BICEPS 14 points15 points ago

I like how all the celebreties make advertisements for them and don't get any money. What stories does BILD hide so the celebreties make ads for them? :D

[–]aggrosan 11 points12 points ago

Blackmailing is common practice for BILD. reminds me of a story i've read on bildblog.de about Charlotte Roche

[–]123456787654321 16 points17 points ago

Oh yeah, they blackmailed her after all of her three brothers died in a car crash. After printing pictures from the crash scene. And when she sued them over that, they sued other media to stop saying they blackmailed her, even though there was clear evidence.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points ago

it's a clever one. they will spend 10.000 € for a good cause if you take part in it but when you decline they will use it against you. they tried it with "Wir sind Helden"link

If only the RAF had succeeded when they tried to blow them up...

[–]ruhrpott 8 points9 points ago

Bild' dir deine....just fuck this.

[–]HappyVlane 7 points8 points ago

I'd say "Heute" (also Austrian) is even worse than "Bild".

[–]nk_sucks 6 points7 points ago

actually the kronenzeitung is worse. fox news too.

[–]kingalex1991 7 points8 points ago

guys, what about the österreich?

[–]quick_thinkfast 5 points6 points ago

This stupid magazine.

And fuck those assholes who have been writing "Google Chemtrails" and all that other stuff all over the U-Bahn stations and on the sides of all the newspaper holders.

Want to smack those kids over the head

[–]Aschebescher 1 point2 points ago

I hate "Bild"-Zeitung, but after seeing this misleading photoshop I have to disagree.

[–]tutufuzi 7 points8 points ago

until the age of 5 or so i was an avid reader of the kronenzeitung. the stories under the boobie pictures were always great.

[–]Floppin 8 points9 points ago

Austria's finest!

[–]RFGuy 6 points7 points ago

Fuck i need that!!!
I´m tiered of wiping my ass on the TV screen!

[–]Cynicsdelight 20 points21 points ago

I'm curious when Fox has purposefully edited a photo like this? Reuters doesn't seem to have a problem with it though...

[–]tehbertl 41 points42 points ago

hahaha what the hell that is some terrible shopping

[–]binary-love 22 points23 points ago

wtf? they photoshopped to make them more ugly??

[–]alcakd 28 points29 points ago

http://www.reddit.com/r/WTF/comments/xc8zd/photoshop_in_syria/c5l5qag

Yeah. Basically people can get an impression of someone by how they look. If you look "shady", ie that guy who got dark lines photoshopped under him, or ugly then people will be less likely to support you.

[–]binary-love 16 points17 points ago

Makes sense but still pretty fucked up.

[–]zulubanshee 6 points7 points ago

People who watch Fox are particularly susceptible to this.

[–]GaryLeHam 8 points9 points ago

Wow, it's not like they even photoshopped someone into the background of a ruined city. They deliberately made their political opponents look uglier so that they would be less credible. That's a whole new level of scuminess.

[–]SpudgeBoy 4 points5 points ago

I guess they do have a problem with it, because Reuters did a whole piece on the cropped photos and posted it to their own website.

http://blogs.reuters.com/gbu/2010/06/07/cropped-photos/

If they didn't have a problem with it, they would have just ignored it.

A number of readers contacted us about this. At the top and bottom you can see our initial cropped versions on the left, and the full frame versions on the right.

The images in question were made available in Istanbul, and following normal editorial practice were prepared for dissemination which included cropping at the edges. When we realized that a dagger was inadvertently cropped from the images, Reuters immediately moved the original set, as well.

We also used one of the uncropped photos on our reuters.com home page, and linked to a slideshow which used both full-frame knife shots: GBU Editor

[–]Kupkin 4 points5 points ago

I know that they've cited "The Onion" as a legitimate source before...

[–]GroinCentralStation 2 points3 points ago

for fairness' sake, here's the response from cnn

[–]jdepps113 2 points3 points ago

To be fair, you don't know that they photoshopped it. Someone may have given it to them like that, and they believed it was real.

[–]colinmurphy00 0 points1 point ago

Ugh shut UP

[–]st0pmakings3ns3 2 points3 points ago

The saddest thing about the Krone is, that half of the Austrians read it which gives it higher penetration than even newspapers in the former societ regime or ANY other known daily newspaper for that matter. Getting to know that really shattered the picture of my fellow Austrians, then again, the more i get to know about it the more i doubt the collective will of this country to be anything more than a massive comedy show.

[–]lcp 25 points26 points ago

Here is the link to the source of the image at the European Press Agency: http://www.epa.eu/webgate/preview.php?TABPREV=PREVIEW&SECTION=SEARCHRESULT&IMGID=50441600

[–]FrusTrick 56 points57 points ago

That picture sums up the news feed that we here in Europe get about the middle east in total.

[–]ghazi364 32 points33 points ago

Dont worry, same in US. Everyone I know thinks mideast daily life is gunshots, explosions and rubble.

[–]peacekeeper1812 31 points32 points ago

I remember when someone post pictures of Iran on Reddit a while back. I would have never thought the country was so beautiful. I seriously thought it was all sand and mountains with an occasional half-broken city every here and there.

[–]skratchx 9 points10 points ago

View from my plane as it flew over Iran last week. Desert as far as the eye could see.

[–]willymo 18 points19 points ago

The northern part of Iran is nice, and that's what they like to show off. But look at a map. 90% of Iran is sand and mountains. I wouldn't say their cities are half-broken though.

Everytime you look through the pictures anyone posts showing off how beautiful Iran is, it's always on the northern side of the Alborz (makes up about 5% of Iran and is where the elite live), or inside a major city near national landmarks with planted grass and such.

I don't intend to make you think Iran is a dirty place full of desperation, but to think it's an all around beautiful place that's somehow completely different from every country around it is equally misguided.

[–]eat-your-corn-syrup 6 points7 points ago

90% of Iran is sand

Just like Prince of Persia

[–]tinkthank 4 points5 points ago

Why are deserts and mountains not beautiful?

[–]shizzler 1 point2 points ago

Do you have a link?

[–]WeLikeGore 7 points8 points ago

[–]shizzler 1 point2 points ago

Thanks, the pics are amazing!

[–]DeVilleBT 11 points12 points ago

This should be sent to all the other newspapers and tv stations. It's a shame.

If we don't act up against things like this it will be getting even more out of hand. Photoshopping should be strictly prohibited in newspapers.

[–]stevil 13 points14 points ago

Photoshopping should be strictly prohibited in newspapers.

And here I was, thinking it already was prohibited.

[–]notimportant23 6 points7 points ago

What would freedom of the press be if they couldn't just make shit up?

[–]amadeus2490 1 point2 points ago

No one prohibits it, but I remember hearing that France wanted to make it so that whenever an image is Photoshopped, there has to be a printed notice letting people know that it's been digitally altered.

[–]ggeerrmm 11 points12 points ago

Here is the original photo used as the background, and here is the source

[–]shark6428 8 points9 points ago

Biggest no-no in journalism.

[–]starbuxed 40 points41 points ago

any body remember a movie called wag the dog.

[–]The_Ombudsman 10 points11 points ago

Hah, that was my first thought too. I wonder if they shoved a bag of chips into the hands of that guy to begin with...

[–]atlaslugged 5 points6 points ago

They'll punch the cat later.

[–]lcp 5 points6 points ago

I just sent a mail about the photoshoping in the 'Kronen Zeitung' to the editors of a serious Austrian newspaper. Let's see if the story get's printed. People need to know that the 'Wag The Dog'-story happens on a daily bases and have to be more alert in this regard.

[–]RykezOne 66 points67 points ago

echt eine dreistigkeit für sich... scheiss medien.

[–]rcglinsk 31 points32 points ago

This google translated to:

really an impertinence for themselves ... fucking media

[–]tutufuzi 22 points23 points ago

for themselves

[–]the-knife 5 points6 points ago

"in itself" is a more literal translation.

The media caught lying and engaging in disinformation? Say it aint so.

[–]isofx 5 points6 points ago

I'd be glad to say that that's the worst I've seen in this newspaper...

[–]insidious_sedition 4 points5 points ago

wow that's so blatant it actually would be funny if the implications of it weren't so sad

[–]Nomad_forever 5 points6 points ago

Fuck yeah journalistic integrity.

RUN DUDE! There's a dementor behind you!

[–]sifsilver1 18 points19 points ago

Syria? You mean Austria?

[–]saydokan 4 points5 points ago

He means the location where the shot happened ;)

[–]cconrad0825 3 points4 points ago

One thing I missed in the first reading: This was a European publication, not a Syrian one... I've been seeing a lot of blame placed on the FSA for this incident.

[–]AiKantSpel 2 points3 points ago

Obfiously they are trying to manipulate the facts here...

Austrians on reddit ? i don't feel so alone anymore - so selten dos man wen bei reddit trifft ^

As a German, I'm ashamed.

Edit: It's Austrian, so...yay?

[–]AmericanRover 4 points5 points ago

Don't worry, you've got plenty more to be ashamed about.

[–]raptorjeebus1911 11 points12 points ago

Nice to see the west being desperate to justify invasion.

[–]JaseFace 4 points5 points ago

Except that actually invading is the last thing any western power wants. We're quite content to finance and not-so-covertly arm the rebels. Please do yourself a favor and read multiple news sources, not just your conspiracy theory sites.

[–]Shaysdays 7 points8 points ago

The headline roughly translates to "Assad's army is rolling with tanks to the south- "Mother of all slaughters."

[–]DoctorMoog42 45 points46 points ago

Actually, it's "Assad's army rolls with tanks to the 'mother of all battles.'"

[–]Shaysdays 11 points12 points ago

Thank you!

[–]VaguelyCondescending 8 points9 points ago

Edit-I had asked you about translating an arabic letter...then I realised you were translating the text from the newspaper. My bad, friend.

[–]marvbrown 3 points4 points ago

This is why I can't trust the main stream media anymore, never will again.

We have got to have some way to oversee the verification of news photographs and audio. It is too easy to fake these days.

[–]evolsteve[!] 1 point2 points ago

Wouldn't it have been easier to take a new picture with man baby and child in front of that building?

[–]lcp 1 point2 points ago

Fuck it...! it's Sunday afternoon and we are obviously bored in front of our computers. Let's do something good and let's make this BIG! ~hehe~

[–]des1928 1 point2 points ago

I heard the Syrian's also have great films

[–]Somerled 1 point2 points ago

Title is slightly misleading. Appears the photoshopping was done in Austria.

[–]deltefknieschlaeger 2 points3 points ago

Upvote this and there is hope for a broader questioning of the media concering the syrian conflict.

[–]Dahill 1 point2 points ago

[–]swedishnitro 1 point2 points ago

I took a class called moral implications of the digital information age. If the class could be summed up in one sentence, it would be, "never believe any picture you see ever again."

"The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” ~ Malcolm X

Wait, wait...before you upvote for going along with the idea Assad's an okay guy...

As someone who has a lot of friends with families in Syria--and in Aleppo, specifically--who are fearing for their lives each day, it seems like a lot of you have this whole situation a biiiiiiit backward.

But yeah, yeah...rebels, bad. Longstanding oligarchy, good.

WTF, indeed.

[–]aetheradept 1 point2 points ago
