A lot of times they'll forget to block it if it's on a secure server. Try putting S after HTTP. It works at my work, unlike me.

[–]cuddlep00p 0 points1 point ago

Hey, thanks for this, friend!

[–]rwgeorge -5 points-4 points ago

Um....phone?

[–]TheMightyJehosiphat 0 points1 point ago

Apparently, reddit doesn't want you to use Alien Blue.

[–]CanIGetaHellYeah 11 points12 points ago

Happened to me last week, few options:

MS Outlookit: Browse reddit in outlook

MS Wordit: Browse reddit in a word document

Scroll it: A web app that puts posts into tiles.

My work was smart enough to block imgur.com as well so I need a full blown proxy / VPN to get all of that. I tend to just remote desktop outside the network now to browse. You would think maybe I would just give up ? NO WAY, I need my little fix to make the day enjoyable.

[–]larkable 2 points3 points ago

replace imgur with filmot and you can get around the imgur block as well.

[–]t_Lancer 1 point2 points ago

install greasemonkey and install imgur url replacer and it's as if nothing changed.

[–]xarious 38 points39 points ago

You must have the worst IT people at work. The IT people at my work intentionally leave reddit and imigur, because if they block it they can't browse it.

[–]South_Dakotan 20 points21 points ago

Or they have their own way to get around the block.

[–]NytFantom 3 points4 points ago

Network admins can block specific PC IPs and/or MAC addresses. I remember learning to do that with the tech coordinator from high school.

[–]FapFlop 2 points3 points ago

It's usually the case of bypassing/whitelisting specific IPs (never MAC addresses).

[–]NytFantom 0 points1 point ago

Oh well alright. In any case, they can block you and leave themselves!

[–]Snoopyalien24 -1 points0 points ago

Right, MAC addresses are technically their physical address.

[–]interkin3tic 0 points1 point ago

Try using tor. On a USB stick with firefox if you don't have install abilities. If it's a blacklist, and only certian sites are blocked, tor can probably get around it. If it's just that only certain sites are allowed, then I don't think tor will work.

Don't enter private information though. And DO NOT TORRENT WITH TOR.

[–]KronktheKronk 0 points1 point ago

why not torrent with tor?

[–]TheRedJester 7 points8 points ago

Yep, Facebook, Youtube, and even Digg are blocked at my work.

Yet Reddit and Imgur are mysteriously allowed.

[–]HanselSoHotRightNow 1 point2 points ago

I work for a fortune 500 company in IT and practically every time wasting site ever is blocked except reddit and imgur.

One of my friends is on the IT team that actually blocks these things and they say that nobody really actually pays attention to what is blocked as long as all porn is blocked... (and Gonewild is blocked as fuck)

[–]IM_THE_DECOY 16 points17 points ago

As an IT guy, I assure you, just because it's blocked for you... doesn't mean it's blocked for us.

[–]Stuck_in_TN 5 points6 points ago

I've had to block certain people from Facebook at work. It's not hard to block just one or two PCs from a specific website or domain.

[–]dmitriy_bismark 2 points3 points ago

Until they learn about VPN.

[–]Stuck_in_TN 2 points3 points ago

Trust me, I don't have to worry about that. My users have trouble telling the difference between HDD memory and RAM.

[–]lomelyo 0 points1 point ago

I'm not sure that even if they knew how, they would use it. I think that's a pretty good excuse to get fired.

[–]xarious 0 points1 point ago

As a somewhat competent computer user, I assure you, just because it's blocked for me... doesn't mean it's blocked for my proxy server.

[–]Oreoloveboss 2 points3 points ago

At my old job a bunch of times on the weekend reddit would get blocked, but then on Monday it would be unblocked, I think they had a different weekend crew or something come in and decide it was bad, but the regular guys would unblock it later.

I installed a Chrome extension that opened all reddit links in HTTPS, that wasn't blocked.

[–]MrDongji 0 points1 point ago

That's interesting. I feel like the IT guys at my workplace intentionally left Reddit alone, but blocked imgur.

[–]corymo -1 points0 points ago

Now he just needs to see if 9gag works on his internet. :P

[–]Lotusflowerbomb13 5 points6 points ago

Our IT guys left Reddit but blocked msworddit...

[–]Coloneljesus 0 points1 point ago

what about coderedd?

[–]Zilvreen 23 points24 points ago

Maybe you should be, I dunno... working?

[–]insertlamenamehere 27 points28 points ago

[–]interkin3tic 5 points6 points ago

No one works 100% of the time, and breaks are valuable to refresh you.

Reddit might be a little too addictive for that to be effective thouh. You do have to come back for it to be helpfull.

[–]SlimyTurnips 2 points3 points ago

That kid smiling in the background = IT Guys...

[–]TheRamenator 4 points5 points ago

easy way round most blocks: http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=de&tl=en&u=reddit.com

it even worked in china

[–]llama810 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit that just blew my mind

[–]TheRamenator 0 points1 point ago

You're welcome :-)

[–]YouSirCanFuckOff 2 points3 points ago

VPN. Bootable linux distros with onion routing installed. Blackmail. Mission impossible style intrusions into the IT peoples office to rectify this issue.

[–]interkin3tic 1 point2 points ago

That escalated quickly...

[–]gandhikahn 6 points7 points ago

[–]bacon_taste 1 point2 points ago

That's what I love about IT. No facebook/twitter or other crap for you. The rules for me? Don't look at porn.

[–]Gavekort 0 points1 point ago

Who's gonna notice?

[–]bacon_taste 0 points1 point ago

Well, the other IT people for one. Also, it helps you work when you don't have a boner. Unless you're in porn.

[–]Stuck_in_TN 0 points1 point ago

The rule for me? Don't get caught looking at porn. (There's only two of us in our IT department.)

[–]interkin3tic 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but you guys also have to deal with malware, people who don't understand why keeping their password on a post-it note on the monitor is unacceptable, and emails about "The microsoft isnt working! Fix it now!"

[–]dustnite 1 point2 points ago

Someone needs to learn to proxy...

[–]ilikefarting 1 point2 points ago

I just use my LTE on my iPad, I'd rather not have my browsing history go through my works network.

[–]scorque 1 point2 points ago

Imagine the horrible moral and emotional hoops they had to go through. That would be like ordering a nuclear strike on your own country.

Or you have the most evil IT guys, ever.

[–]CuriousAbra 0 points1 point ago

Which is a fascinating scenario. Do you nuke your own coast to stop an enemy invasion, knowing you'll be killing hundreds of millions? How bad does the invading army's government have to be before you'll do it? Or will you do it no matter what, even if you knew the puppet government they'd install would be better than your own?

[–]Muffin-lover859 1 point2 points ago

Simple fix: first get a smart phone I would suggest an iPhone (it's what I have I know it works) . Second get mobile reddit, you dot have to have wifi for it to work. Problem solved (may run slow but you still get your reddit fix)

[–]RaptorF22 1 point2 points ago

Not sure if Reddit uses DNS or IP. If it uses IP then you can just type in Reddit's IP address in the URL bar and you will be able to view Reddit. Most IT companies only block URLs 'Names' (using DNS) instead of their IP addresses. Go to start > (windows XP click run, then type cmd) Windows 7 just type cmd > then type "ping www.reddit.com > that will give you the IP address to type in to the URL.

[–]mrspiffy12 1 point2 points ago

Well, it''s to bad you'll have to , you know, work now....

[–]rabird21 0 points1 point ago

The IT group at my work just blocked imgur...

[–]roopn 0 points1 point ago

anarchy

[–]kareemabduljabbq 0 points1 point ago

you can look at porn on 4chan if you want, but something with the terms "game" in it or "imgur". off limits.

I haven't tried it but I swear you could type in www. buttsecks.com and not get restricted.

click on a link with the word "game" in it? blocked.

[–]FaithwithinReason -1 points0 points ago

I think time wasting sites are blocked because everyone from the boss down browses the internet at work. Terminating employment for surfing imgur/reddit would cause no less than half the staff at my work to disappear overnight. Pornography and 4chan contain material which can cause on the spot termination. Not many people surf them during work as it takes a special kind.

[–]statini 0 points1 point ago

They block anything with "game" in it at my work as well. I even wrote a strongly worded unblock request because they let everyone check sports stats and news all day and I can't read about upcoming games :(

[–]kareemabduljabbq 0 points1 point ago

isn't that fucked up? I've got nothing against it, but if you can watch a play by play run down of what's happening in your team's game, why can't I read a review of a video game on metacritic ffs?

[–]kluda06 0 points1 point ago

work is defiantly going to suck for you now.............

[–]FapFlop 0 points1 point ago

Don't blame IT. Blame whoever runs the place. All IT should ever do is recommend and fill requests. Personally, I'd be fine with leaving everything wide open as our web filter (without any content blocking enabled) and AV software do a pretty good job at keeping your computer clean. It's usually the department heads and managers that request that certain sites be blocked.

Ahem ninjacloak.com

[–]tdrunner95 0 points1 point ago

VPN MUTHAFUCKA!

[–]lazermoon 0 points1 point ago

Here is a little trick i learned in high school that might work for you. Go to whatever website is blocked and go to the url. Then where it says http change it to https. this works with firefox and safari but I'm not sure about Google chrome or internet explorer

[–]BrokenBraviaInOregon 0 points1 point ago

Where there's a reddit, there's a way.

[–]egars 0 points1 point ago

It's 2012, use your phone.

[–]PandaCookies 0 points1 point ago

I work for Xerox and I don't do anything for 8 hours, and when Reddit ended up being blocked I had a very similar reaction. Now I just google news and web comics. I miss Reddit at work so bad. But I have read every XKCD, and C&H comic ever created. As well as some new good ones that I found on chance.

[–]ShmifandWeshun 0 points1 point ago

Go on Firefox... get the add-on called "Stealthy." Install it and restart your browser, right click the red stealth bomber in the top right corner and go to the settings or something like that, and change the 2-letter country code to AR, DE, or some other non-english speaking country. Change the red bomber to green by clicking on it.

It works at my school, I don't know about your work though.

[–]KillingIsBadong 0 points1 point ago

Do your job hippie

[–]furubakyo 0 points1 point ago

... this reminded me that my teacher had a link to reddit on the class page... in a class where we each had a computer facing away from the teacher... I was comfortable knowing reddit would never be blocked

[–]Beaver-Believer 0 points1 point ago

This is why I chose to work in IT

[–]darkviper039 0 points1 point ago

if there are only a couple of PCs that need specific things blocked, I usually just edit the "Hosts" file and give a site i.e reddit a bs ip to connect to:

1.1.1.1 www.reddit.com

http://www.overclock.net/t/44143/how-to-use-the-hosts-file-to-block-websites-in-windows

[–]Harutinator 0 points1 point ago

I have a similar story. When I was doing an internship, I discovered that Reddit wasn't blocked. This was when I FIRST discovered Reddit. Naturally I was browsing NSFW at work. Couple of days later imgur got blocked :(

[–]eldog 0 points1 point ago

VPN

[–]SuncoastGuy 0 points1 point ago

I work in IT and my company recently blocked Imgur. Only then did I realize how useless Reddit is without access to Imgur.

[–]envyexile 0 points1 point ago

Why is anderson silva so sad?

[–]dooron 0 points1 point ago

is that Anderson Silva?

[–]funnybeastsp 0 points1 point ago

Go to mswordit.com

[–]Usakar 0 points1 point ago

I know it sounds silly, but I have a job where I actually have to work. I know right?

[–]roopn 0 points1 point ago

This happened at my school and all I thought was:

"Finally I can get some work done"

[–]Babkock -1 points0 points ago

Use Tor.

[–]Teknohe -1 points0 points ago

Just assign yourself a static IP within the networks subnet and specify DNS manually. Most places use DNS based content filtering these days, so manually specifying your DNS servers and using google DNS or something similar is usually enough to bypass it.

[–]FapFlop 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, if your organization has a shit web filtering device.

[–]all1en -1 points0 points ago

Omg now you have to do some actual work when you are at work! How terrible! Maybe you should quit so you had more time to browse reddit.

[–]Leonardj4 -1 points0 points ago

Most IT people suck so try HTTPS protocol and bam reddit at your fingertips.
