Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Source. From the article:

"In a runner-up image by U.S. photographer Sean Heavey, a supercell thunderstorm roars across a prairie in Montana. These colossal storms include mesocyclones, rotating updrafts that can deliver torrential rain and tornadoes, according to NASA."

EDIT: Fixed link.

[–]ThatDirtyTroll 41 points42 points ago

Thank you. If you didn't post it I would have. Upvote for truth

[–]Gh0stP1rate 40 points41 points ago

Upvotes this comment for truth. Downvotes OP for being a lazy karma-whore who added a tint to an old repost.

[–]patrickthewhite1 19 points20 points ago

Could be a lying Aunt

[–]atrociousxcracka 13 points14 points ago

I don't get why ppl repost Crap.... 99% of the time it is posted in the comments then everyone downvotes it.... But people don't read the comments and they still get a boat load of karma....

Well this has been a great conversation with myself

Thanks, me

[–]bruce656 1 point2 points ago

Dat jpeg compression!

[–]SlaughterMeister 16 points17 points ago

OP has brought shame upon my home province.

[–]DiabeticKid 6 points7 points ago

As a fellow Albertan... I also hang my head in shame. Damn you OP!

[–]dylanbrig 5 points6 points ago

Yeah I could tell by the pic it wasn't from Alberta, that would have been front page news somewhere like the Calgary Sun where there is no real news to report.

BUT, could be an honest mistake. Montana is not exactly far away.

[–]jackioff 0 points1 point ago

There was a massive Hail storm today, but I don't doubt that this has been posted before.

[–]PaleWithBlueEyes 8 points9 points ago

Montana in the house! Thank you. We are wicked.

[–]pkayl 5 points6 points ago

It looks life a gaping asshole. Take it from a gay man

[–]Slehpher 2 points3 points ago

We did have a huge storm last night, well, We could see the lightning and everything, just didn't exactly hit my town.

[–]serioush 1 point2 points ago

Does that explain why it looks like the sky is popping a pimple?

[–]randible 1 point2 points ago

I came here to say this and I'm so glad that you pointed this out. Sean Heavey has captured some terrific extreme weather photographs and it sucks that people just steal his work an misattribute it to themselves.

[–]jingoblingo 1 point2 points ago

Montana's across the border from Alberta. The storm may have been in N. Montana, and traveled across the prairie into S. Alberta.

[–]QTsexkitten 34 points35 points ago

people shouldn't lie on the interwebs. lying is bad.

[–]Saihna 2 points3 points ago

Yes. People lie on the damn internet, so stop asking.

[–][deleted] 86 points87 points ago

It looks like a prolapsed anus.

[–]KingoftheAnimus 34 points35 points ago

DO NOT GOOGLE.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Yeah, I should have mentioned that...

[–]B3tween2Ferns 4 points5 points ago

I googled it anyway. DO NOT GOOGLE.

[–]quadrapod 12 points13 points ago

Now kiss.... (The posted .gif is not compatible with life. This is for any who did click)

EDIT: So many down-votes, I ask you, how often do you think the opportunity arises to use this gif. Answer yourself that and you'll realize that I had to do it.

[–]doubleplusepic 11 points12 points ago

Wow.... NSFL

[–]66xsseldoG 4 points5 points ago

That's someone's daughter.

Ahahah

[–]Cyberboss_JHCB 2 points3 points ago

I've been fully desensitized, i mehed at the first link and rofled at the second

[–]Boney_M 1 point2 points ago

well, glad i took the day off. the scarred IT guys would surely have made my life hell.

[–]brigodon 1 point2 points ago

Go away, please.

[–]cannibaljim 0 points1 point ago

How jaded would someone have to be to find that porn scene sexy!? Who would see that and go, "Yeah. Yeah, that's hot." I can't imagine that film was very financially successful.

[–]quadrapod 0 points1 point ago

There is an audience for everything. I personally admit to having a folder full of images of dragons mating. There are a million different fetishes and over 101000000 combinations of those fetishes. People are into what they are into, it really isn't my place to judge.

[–]iriegypsy 0 points1 point ago

Slow clap.

[–]Octopusbread 0 points1 point ago

uhh... no shit?

[–]singularityneuromanc 9 points10 points ago

No, sometimes it is shit. People shit their assholes inside out.

[–]devilcraft -1 points0 points ago

I went into the comments just to point this out. Give me half your upvotes or I'll spread a rumor about you surfing 9gag.

[–]Sir_Herp_of_Derpalot 25 points26 points ago

Of all the things your aunt never showed you, this is near the top of that list.

[–]infinite0ne 8 points9 points ago

Isn't this the same fucking picture that's been going around for the last 2 years?

[–]phoebus67 2 points3 points ago

Yuuuup. I've seen it on several different farms in different places, and on tropical islands.

[–]galbrth 30 points31 points ago

Karma whore

[–]harriswill 11 points12 points ago

My brother just sent me this video of Kennedy's assassination last week in Portland, Oregon.

[–]robtheviking 6 points7 points ago

This wasn't from your aunt you liar

[–]TheDirtyArmenian 6 points7 points ago

I signed in just to downvote this. not only is it an old repost but it's been doctored in a poor fashion.

[–]pounds 7 points8 points ago

If you're going to lie on reddit, be more clever.

[–]themurphmobile 1 point2 points ago

i bet OP is pretty fucking embarrassed now..

[–]ejsanchez1986 3 points4 points ago

I don't know how many times I've seen this reposted.

[–]randymarshx 10 points11 points ago

This has been reposted about 12 times now... downvotes please.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

I was vacationing in Alberta earlier this summer, we had some similar storms. My favourite by far was a heat lighting storm though.

It was surreal. From rolling dark mass to rolling dark mass, streaks of pure, raw energy consumed the air. Great trails of white and blue shone on the prairies and turned darkness to light. An endless sea of silence approached from the horizon with the fury of a Greek god. Lighting clashed and danced in the still, muggy air. I watched in wonder and in solitude. I knew in that moment, nobody else would ever see this majesty as I saw it. From a small window, partially blocked by the handles of an ancient treadmill. My hands gripping my pillow firmly; the only thing I could hold onto to protect myself from the imminent insignificance of my life this storm brought upon me. It was truly endless. Hours and hours passed, and the night descended into early morning. Not a single word escaped my lips. I was truly speechless. The sheer glory of the dancing light before me was breath taking. The dark clouds against dark clouds against dark clouds against dark sky. True and pure power lighting the sky and brilliantly as day.

So it was basically pretty cool.

[–]r3klaw 2 points3 points ago

10/10 would read again.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you!

[–]funnynickname 2 points3 points ago

Can someone explain what's going on here? Is the center where rising air is being sucked up, cooling and causing rain? Is there a warm front, cold front?

I can't grok the weather.

*edit - misspelled grok.

[–]Boney_M 0 points1 point ago

michael valentine smith sends an upvote

[–]cloud_watcher 2 points3 points ago

I have a Facebook friend (friend's mom) who is always doing this. She posts some obviously National Geographic storm photo from the middle of Africa or something and says, "My neighbor snapped this tornado forming in her backyard last week!" I think she is posting them in all honesty. She's just picking them up from someone else and believing them. It's weird.

[–]thebananabob 2 points3 points ago

why the fuck do people have to change the colours of the pics so that they look absolutely unnatural ?

[–]tsuichii 2 points3 points ago

dat rectum

[–]Goatpus 8 points9 points ago

Sorry, not hail. I've seen this imagine in my meteorology textbooks. Nonetheless, a pretty stunning imagine of a supercell. Thankfully this looks to be non-tornadic.

[–]feynmanwithtwosticks 1 point2 points ago

I thought supercells of this nature were by definition mesocyclones, which almost always cause.tornadic activity. Are there mesocyclones which don't create tornadoes (or water spots/dust devils)?

[–]mherr77m 0 points1 point ago

The majority of mesocyclones don't produce tornadoes. Think of it like this, a tornado needs a mesocyclone, but a mesocyclone doesn't necessarily have a tornado. This is also not always true but a good starting point.

[–]Goatpus 0 points1 point ago

While its true mesocyclones spawn tornadoes, its a minority of the time. While all mesocyclones rotate, scientists still aren't sure why some spawn tornadoes and others do not. They believe it has to do with crosswise vorticity vs streamwise vorticity entering the mesocyclone. Streamwise vorticity entering the mesocyclone updraft allows the vorticity field to tighten, leading to the development of a tornado. Or so its believed. There are many other factors in tornado development but the vorticity issue is one of the largest.

[–]idrawinmargins 1 point2 points ago

I always think that is what happens when a cloud vomits.

[–]Gregs3RDleg 1 point2 points ago

[–]ConnorHD3 1 point2 points ago

Nice. Add a shitty filter to an old reposted picture, lie about your aunt and the location for karma.

[–]coolzero20 1 point2 points ago

I've seen this get re-posted with a DIFFERENT geographical location and bullshit story in the title 3x now.

[–]Watsons 1 point2 points ago

[–]nsharp01 1 point2 points ago

Old picture, not alberta, uninstall, kill yourself.

[–]Gh0stP1rate 16 points17 points ago

If your link was actually something meaningful people would upvote you more. You're looking for this.

[–]trampus1 5 points6 points ago

So reposted it doesn't even matter if you edit it. Next time it gets posted it'll be green and facing the other direction.

[–]Stumpledumpus 11 points12 points ago

That's preposterous. Anyway it would look too much like this picture that I just took at my grandma's house in Wyoming.

[–]Like_A_Ser 0 points1 point ago

That is a supercell that was posted on yahoo.com a while back, sorry but this looks like an edited version of it.

[–]flo73557 0 points1 point ago

i was camping when that storm hit us, it came out of nowhere! a close family to ours was camping with us, and their 12 year old son got hit right between the eyes with a golfball sized ice chunk haha funniest thing i've seen in a long time! it bounced off the picnic table and i saw it fly directly into his face, the only word that could describe the face would have to be "DERP".

[–]redfukit 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of cloudyvwwith a chance of meatballs

[–]wgardenhire -2 points-1 points ago

That is NOT a hail storm.

[–]Mrs_Brisby 6 points7 points ago

Its most definitely a mesocyclone, and they are the best producers of hail, not to say that all meso's kick out hail, only about 30% do, and I don't have details on this specific storm, but there is no way to tell from the image if it has or not.

Edit: Oh and there is no such thing as "a hail storm", just mesocyclones which sometimes do make hail if they have enough updraft.

[–]Guyot11 1 point2 points ago

In addition from the looks of it, it appears to be a HP supercell which many times delivers copious amounts of rain and hail. I don't know necessarily if this in particular is a hail storm, but these type of supercells create record-size hail.

It's a shame it's a repost, but this is the direction my brain went as soon as I saw that.
