I've messed with giving microwaves strange times to see how they handle it - the 66 seconds portion would just probably turn into 1 minute 6 seconds, meaning the whole thing is set to 7 minutes 6 seconds. I kinda wish it would say "ok, fuck you, it's in seconds now" and go for 666 seconds.

[–]squigs 1 point2 points ago

I think this comes down to unspecified behaviour. Each column has a rule along the lines of:

if digit > 0
    subtract 1
else
    digit = 5
    subtract 1 from next column

Why have special code just to handle some weird inputs?

[–]capn_awesome 0 points1 point ago

That only works for the seconds digits (not the minutes digits, which work differently - they can have 9s in them and it'll return 9s to them).

As far as why have code to handle weird inputs - that's exactly what user interfaces are supposed to do, handle all (including weird) user inputs.

I'd kinda like to go work for a microwave company just to fix some microwave firmware, see it into one microwave, so I can buy that one - (and then quit, cause I assume it's not my dream job and I assume they're not paying me boatloads). (And maybe jack donaghy would be my boss...)

The dumbest thing I've encountered is on my microwave's "timer" feature. If you hit "6, 0, 0, TIMER" it just sits there like a rock and looks at you like your'e stupid. Doesn't budge. In my world, it would have taken the input time and started the timer. Or at LEAST it would go into timer mode (toggles a TIMER icon on) so that you could hit START next. Nope. Only option here now is to hit "CANCEL, TIMER, 5, 5, 0, START." (5,5,0 cause I've lost 10 seconds on whatever it was I want to time)

[–]squigs 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but the units column is exactly the same except that it resets to 9. This is even something that can be done quite easily with discrete hardware.

It does handle obscure input, and in a consistent way. It may not be the absolute best way but it works, ir cheap and isn't completely illogical.

[–]DuckReconMajor -3 points-2 points ago

meaning the whole thing is set to 7 minutes 6 seconds

no

600 seconds = 10 minutes, so

10 minutes + 1 minute 6 seconds = 11 minutes 6 seconds.

[–]kklevy 0 points1 point ago

It's not 666 seconds; it's 6 minutes, 66 seconds. 66 seconds is 1 minute, 6 seconds. Hence, 6 minutes + 1 minute + 6 seconds = 7 minutes, 6 seconds.

(Have you operated a microwave before?)

[–]DuckReconMajor 0 points1 point ago

Only to 99 I was scared to go higher

[–]capn_awesome 1 point2 points ago

Derp, this was the point of my post is that it does not do that... the left side does not turn into seconds in this case, it stays minutes... Otherwise you'd be right... (and it's my last comment about "fuck it, 666 seconds").

[–]DuckReconMajor 1 point2 points ago

I see. Even after you explained it it took me a little while. I'm stupid :P

[–]DuckReconMajor 0 points1 point ago

You guys made me downvote my own comment. lol

[–]AnkuErik 5 points6 points ago

That's it folks, we've lost.

Bow down to the all mighty.

[–]TomScotland 4 points5 points ago

The fires of hell suddenly seem a lot less scary.

[–]Shock1881 4 points5 points ago

What about when you set it to 6:65?

[–]tjduncan1998 3 points4 points ago

I didn't realize that they were dumb enough to put popcorn in for 7 minutes, it takes about 45 to 90 seconds.

[–]mbedner 1 point2 points ago

I like the post, but wouldn't 6:66 show up as 7:06?

[–]kklevy 1 point2 points ago

Microwaves don't correct improper times, my good sir.

[–]kerpaderp 2 points3 points ago

[–]TierOne 2 points3 points ago

Notice that noodles will not burn that quickly. Checkmate heathens.

[–]kbee11 1 point2 points ago

Same thing happens to godless cats!

[–]pparrishwk 0 points1 point ago

Am I the only one who puts in single number sequences? If I want 1 min I just hit 66, 2 min I push 222 and stop it early, 3 min I hit 333 and stop it early. Anything I randomly determine that requires less than a min gets 11, 22, 33, 44 and that's it! 55 is too close to a minute so I go straight back to 66. Maybe I am strange? Somebody else please tell me you do this too! All other cooking devices I strictly go by recommended time to a T. I call it my microwave OCD.

[–]Redarmy1917 0 points1 point ago

1-6 it auto goes to 1 min, 2 min, 3 min, etc for me.

[–]rpxtfree 1 point2 points ago

White smoke?

Habemus Papam...

[–]TeaPartyNewKKK 1 point2 points ago

So far all the posts have been about microwaves. Let me compliment you on your mild cartoon parody of how fundies get all exercised about biblical numbers. (Or is it exorcised)?

[–]PropagandaMan -1 points0 points ago

Wasn't the number of the beast or something happened to be 616?

[–]kklevy 0 points1 point ago

[–]rubberlikewalrus -1 points0 points ago

checkmate RodrigoAlves no unmodified microwave can be set to 6:66 only 7:06

[–]TheMediumPanda 1 point2 points ago

I can't currently think of anything worse than the charcoal-y taste of over-microwaved popcorn.

[–]Ninthmission 1 point2 points ago

no its because your retarded and set the timer to 6:66. popcorn only takes three mins to cook.....

[–]Jaunzems 2 points3 points ago

that's sort of the joke...

[–]RebelTactics 1 point2 points ago

Hosanaa in the highest!!!

[–]kvlt616 -1 points0 points ago

i thought it was 616

[–]DuckReconMajor 1 point2 points ago

Actually, if you put a copy of the God Delusion in the microwave alongside your popcorn you get neither burnt nor unpopped kernels and the amount of butter in the bag doubles (but only if you like butter).

Checkmate theists.

[–]Vuul 1 point2 points ago

you'll never get rid of that smell.

[–]Zactacular 1 point2 points ago

6:66 on power level 3 is the best way to reheat any meal.

[–]flamemonkey007 -1 points0 points ago

Has anyone else noticed that it's impossible to set the timer to 6:66?

[–]kklevy 0 points1 point ago

WHY DOES EVERY KEEP SAYING THIS?!?!?! It is possible to do this on any decent, regular microwave.

[–]flamemonkey007 0 points1 point ago

Really? My microwave goes up to 59 seconds and then ticks over to one minute, and goes up to 1:59 before ticking over to 2:00

[–]SepharuSakhmet 1 point2 points ago

Funny, mine burns like hell at 4 minutes :)

and btw, I am soooo tired of this whole 666 is the devils number... IF you bothered to actually READ the passages that refer to the number, the number 666 is the number of MAN not the devil

Checkmate christian :)

[–]kklevy 0 points1 point ago

It's the number of the Beast; and it says it's the number of "man" to show that it is something a human being can relate to (i.e. human beings know what numbers are) instead of some otherworldly symbol.

[–]SepharuSakhmet 0 points1 point ago

Isnt that putting words into the Bible's proverbial mouth? Last I read it distinctly said it was the number of man, not the number of the beast that man could relate to.

[–]htotheh 1 point2 points ago

Why would you waste popcorn? Fry Meme Not sure if you like burnt popcorn or you don't know how to use a microwave

[–]DeRage 1 point2 points ago

Won't happen if the microwave is set to the lowest heat.

[–]parrycm 1 point2 points ago

my popcorn burns more when i put it in for 7:77

[–]captainburnz 0 points1 point ago

7:47 really does it for me.

[–]ChadD1991 0 points1 point ago

Fucking hilarious

[–]Tastethedamnrainbow 0 points1 point ago

You're only supposed to put it in for about 2 minutes, of course it's going to fucking burn, and that's not 6:66, it's fucking 7:06. Doesn't work that way, sorry.

[–]The_A_Drain 0 points1 point ago

Mine catches fire at 2 minutes :|

[–]jesslynn666 -3 points-2 points ago

But... 666 has nothing to do with atheism

[–]iceicecat 1 point2 points ago

666 is the devils number according to christians, they made a joke about their popcorn burning like hell, the place christians believe bad people will go, because they set the microwave to cook for 7 minutes and 6 seconds

[–]DuckReconMajor 1 point2 points ago

We're atheists not asatanists.

[–]kklevy 0 points1 point ago

Satan is a figure in theology, hence he is a legitimate target for atheists. Derp.
