This gif is eerily high quality.

[–]reasondefies 46 points47 points ago

And yet it loaded more or less instantly...

[–]hzj 27 points28 points ago

Because only a certain part of it changes.

[–]SGMD1 8 points9 points ago

[–]N0V0w3ls 0 points1 point ago

It would be the length of the animation, though, not the scope, right? Gifs don't work like that.

[–]umanwizard 0 points1 point ago

They don't? Are you familiar with how GIF compression works? I've actually been wondering this myself lately. Are they stored as completely separate frames, and the compression doesn't take any advantage of similarities between the frames?

[–]N0V0w3ls 0 points1 point ago

As far as I know they don't, which is why video is way more efficient. I used to make gif buddy icons for AIM and each frame was a full picture.

[–]Arcon1337 7 points8 points ago

/r/Cinemagraphs has that tendency.

[–]Chainsaw_breath 6 points7 points ago

my first thought

[–]exscape 0 points1 point ago

Tons and tons of visible dithering. It's very fluid, though!

[–]KittyCanScratch 48 points49 points ago

[–]skizfrenik_syco 66 points67 points ago

[–]Dem0n5 21 points22 points ago

If only I could download a cookie...

[–]TheBrownie 11 points12 points ago

But you can.

[–]pteek 6 points7 points ago

And he did it already, by logging in!

[–]bobthefish 0 points1 point ago

one day.. amazon same day shipping.

[–]IronPigeon 0 points1 point ago

You wouldn't!

[–]HX_Flash 3 points4 points ago

That did nothing but anger me at my lack of chocolate-chip cookies.

[–]3206 2 points3 points ago

They look ridiculously tasty.

[–]Here_for_the_cookies 2 points3 points ago

FINALLY, took me ages to find these

[–]cookiemonster13 1 point2 points ago

you're a monster :(

[–]kitschyk 1 point2 points ago

God damn it. Now I have to go bake chocolate chip cookies.

[–]cookiemonster13 -1 points0 points ago

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

[–]theislandking 58 points59 points ago

Really? What part of reddit do you go to? Because as an over excited spectator, I was kind of disappointed with the low amount of posts regarding the ceremonies.

[–]whisk3rs 1 point2 points ago

There's a ton of reposted screenshots on the front page, the Queen, Mr. Bean, the opening ceremony fireworks...

[–]Sculay 2 points3 points ago

I live 5 minute's from the Olympic stadium and i have no interest at all.. But it is nice to see many new faces around my area now.

[–]theislandking 7 points8 points ago

Boy, I would give my left buttcheck to be in your place right now. :| At least make friends! Especially with the foreigners. It should be an absolute party over there

[–]whisk3rs 0 points1 point ago

It must suck getting out of the house.

[–]originalSpacePirate 0 points1 point ago

No, it sucks being late for work by atleast an hour because all the trains are fucked. It sucks because your whole town is locked down for olympic events meaning you had to cancel your entire weekend. It sucks because everything in London which was already overpriced as fuck is even more so now.

The olympics is a money making scam. I'm glad the foriegners are enjoying it; atleast someone is. As someone who works in London its a fucking nightmare.

[–]deadymcstevejobs 3 points4 points ago

But you did get some nifty infrastructure improvements.

[–]cloud_watcher 0 points1 point ago

In the US and watching some of the coverage. London looks beautiful. I've never been.

[–]originalSpacePirate 0 points1 point ago

It looks beautiful cause you've never been. Take a stroll down east london or take the last tube. You will see things even 4chan would be ashamed of...

[–]HopelessR 24 points25 points ago

I don't like what you like! /pout

[–]whisk3rs -5 points-4 points ago

More like "I am rather uninterested in this even but I am going to be assaulted by all miniscule excerpts of it from every angle for the next 2 weeks". The commercialization and dramatization of it by the American media certainly does not help.

[–]Darko33 11 points12 points ago

Shut up

[–]ruffus4life 3 points4 points ago

i second that shut up

[–]TheAmbiguityBuster 33 points34 points ago

I think the olympics is something worth being interested in, because it's the only time that every country in the world is cooperating and participating in friendly competition. It's one of the only man-made things that unites the world and shows that we CAN all get along.

[–]this_sort_of_thing -5 points-4 points ago

I try to, but I just don't give a shit enough about the sports themselves. And to me a sporting event is only as good as the sport itself. I can understand the American mentality of the spectacle being more important than the sport, but to me that's pretty stupid.

[–]commoncourtesy 5 points6 points ago

American mentality? I think you're stretching a bit on that one.

[–]mjsher2 6 points7 points ago

Learn some of the new sports. Team Handball is pretty awesome.

[–]ChapelPerilous -2 points-1 points ago

It shows we CAN all get along, as long as it is NOT on any matter of significance. The Olympics are a great spectacle to distract people while the power elite complete their resource consolidation before the global economy crashes completely.

[–]Strange_Kid -4 points-3 points ago

Can someone please tell me how true this is? I've never watched the olympics coz I've never had any interest in sports. And this year when asked if I would watch the Olympics I would start mumbling about how it promotes nationalism and is even more commercialised than Christmas, what with the branding police looking out for spectators wearing Nike t-shirts. But I hate being wrong so I'd like to hear more about this cooperation among countries. How does that work? Coz so far my facebook is full of "go Lithuania!" and "Team Britain FTW!" posts, and that teaches me about Olympics that it's just another competition among countries.

[–]ChapelPerilous 1 point2 points ago

It's true if you have been constantly inundated with propaganda most of your life telling you how to feel about it. ;)

IMO the Olympics are vicarious circlejerk that only serves to feed the Society of the Spectacle. More distraction and passive consumption to fill your life with while not participating.

[–]ATownStomp 1 point2 points ago

What are you eight years old? Just turn on your television, Jesus.

[–]Thumbz8 7 points8 points ago

Basically. I think the Olympics are one of the more sacred things around. Sort of a cross all borders celebration of the human body.

[–]cozy_mosasaur 4 points5 points ago

If it weren't for the obnoxious rambling coverage in the US, I'd be a lot more inclined to watch.

[–]makesterriblejokes 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I normally mute the television all together and play music when the commentary is terrible.

[–]betona 1 point2 points ago

I've been watching streaming all morning (Live Extra app) and there is zero commentary on all of the sports. All you hear is the ambient sounds from the sport.

[–]cozy_mosasaur 0 points1 point ago

Good to know! Cheers!

[–]Big_Adam -2 points-1 points ago

By pumping it full of drugs and going "HA, WE;RE BETTER THAN YOU".

Fecking wooo, fecking hooo.

[–]jmo4747 15 points16 points ago

That hand... its terrifying

[–]kara123125 4 points5 points ago

Why does everyone say that? I don't see what's so bad...

[–]Manial 6 points7 points ago

Probably because it's a cinemagraph, and only his hand is moving while the rest of his body is a still frame. Some people find that creepy.

[–]AbstractCalamity 2 points3 points ago

And his chest pulses.

[–]GeekyAine 2 points3 points ago

Cannot be unseen

[–]joshawwa 0 points1 point ago

The timing seems almost like a heart beating.

[–]weenerhole 9 points10 points ago

I don't usually have any interest in any sports, but the Olympics is only once every fourth year! Totally understand you don't care though, but from what I'm seeing, reddit is filled with stuff not related to the Olympics.

[–]i_love_all 1 point2 points ago

ikr, 2008 olympics. the swimming part? wow, watching michael phelps pull off 8 medals was so hype. even now i still remmember the 100 m butterfly that was like hundreth of a second between 1st and 2nd.

[–]pockyp 2 points3 points ago

for some reason this gif really scares me.

[–]Osmodius 2 points3 points ago

My front page has barely any Olympics on it...

[–]Here_for_the_cookies 2 points3 points ago

I know the feel, bro. All I wanted were some cookies.

[–]sovvay 3 points4 points ago

You should try living in England and being uninterested in it.

[–]moderndayvigilante 12 points13 points ago

This shit isn't funny.

/r/reactiongifs

[–]aguacate 3 points4 points ago

Have a cookie.

[–]SMGstring 2 points3 points ago

But I thought you loved sport. I certainly love all kinds of sport.

[–]this_sort_of_thing 3 points4 points ago

It's hard to get interested in the vast majority of sports on offer at the Olympics. Besides, the way the Olympics are is that it's mostly about the spectacle and the politics and mundane nationalism than about the sporting interest.

[–]rdmusic16 4 points5 points ago

Really? I've only seen a small portion of Olympics related posts, and half were pictures about people's family/friends involved (such as someone's father who was in charge of the fireworks).

[–]ThunderOrb 12 points13 points ago

You're not alone.

[–]tnicholson 2 points3 points ago

But still pretty much.

[–]ThunderOrb -3 points-2 points ago

Do you need a hug? I'm right here for you.

[–]NoShameInternets 1 point2 points ago

This is surprisingly creepy.

[–]DerpusOfValues 1 point2 points ago

I get the feeling this would do well in /r/Cinemagraphs!

[–]Vessix 1 point2 points ago

Not even 1/10th of the content I'm browsing through is Olympics related.

[–]PeetaMellark 1 point2 points ago

this might be a bit inconsiderate, but sucks bro. I never had much interest in it either, but visiting in London when it happens and seeing a stream of it near the stadium is something that just makes you get into it.

[–]notjawn 1 point2 points ago

yay for nothing on TV for a month!

[–]tokeyoh 1 point2 points ago

i too have no real interest in the olympics, although i would love to be there. thatd be one hell of a fuckin party, man

[–]emcitymisfit 0 points1 point ago

agreed

[–]BoogieBot 1 point2 points ago

Dude. They added women's boxing this year. If that's not enough to make you watch, I don't know what is.

[–]cloud_watcher 1 point2 points ago

You don't have to be a fan of the Olympics to appreciate how much the queen looks like Bilbo.

[–]ATownStomp 1 point2 points ago

How spoiled and cynical do you have to be to have absolutely no interest in the largest event in all of human history?

[–]Donalddude 1 point2 points ago

I completely agree. Saying its the biggest event in human history is a bit of a stretch, but im still shocked people here show no interest. Even if you're like me and have no interest in sports, it's still amazing and exciting to watch and cheer on the athletes who trained their entire life for this.

[–]ATownStomp 0 points1 point ago

Not trying to be combative here but,

Saying it's the biggest event in human history is a bit of a stretch,

I can't think of anything that is more widely viewed and celebrated.

[–]Speckman 4 points5 points ago

DAMN NIGGA THAT GIF GOES DOWN SMOOTH!!!

[–]balloons321 3 points4 points ago

The only reason I have no interest in seeing it because I feel like when I invest my time being interested in it, 3/4 of my time gets spent watching commercials and listening to stupid commentators. Also I feel like the main goal of the Olympics is less about what it should be about and more about money. All these countries and corporations are just leeching on and feeding off of the event like its a bank machine. Most of the time richer countries have better advantages too.. Which is completely opposite of what you would think the world games should be like.. I just see it as something that kind of separates us all in a sort of way and it reminds me of how shitty things are relating to our world and how it works. I don't actually hate it THIS much but I don't care for it.

[–]smartzie 1 point2 points ago

I tend to agree with you. I understand what the Olympics is supposed to mean to everyone, but all I see insanity. It's inundated with corporate bullies, commercials and ads, copyright squabbles, ungodly amounts of security and weapons and soldiers, etc. I just don't want to watch.

[–]gamerlen 2 points3 points ago

Likewise. Yes yes, woot, go America, gold medal and all that bullshit... can we go back to cat pictures now please?

[–]Umber_Hulk 4 points5 points ago

I thought I was the only one that saw the Olympics as nothing but an international dick waving contest...

[–]ATownStomp 4 points5 points ago

Isn't everything?

You're really oversimplifying it to justify your bias though. You sound like you just hate athletics out of principle, and since your name is "Umber Hulk" and that we're on Reddit I can make a good guess as to what type of person you are.

I say, even if you don't like sports (I don't watch sports) the Olympics is still an amazing event. The pageantry and celebrations at least give you something to watch even if you don't care about the competition. As for the competition, it's literally the most well trained and hard working athletes of our species. It is an opportunity to understand what human beings are capable of. You're witnessing the apex of physical ability.

[–]ChapelPerilous 0 points1 point ago

All dicks aside, it is an international money making contest/opportunity, nothing more. Without the corporate profit motive, the Olympics would be a shell of what they are.

[–]ATownStomp -1 points0 points ago

Young nerdy kids who are still angry at jocks from high school so they refuse to watch athletics out of principle.

[–]IncredibleFalk1 3 points4 points ago

I know that feel, bro

[–]MuxBoy 1 point2 points ago

what? the Olympics started? I'm going to find a live broadcast stream of it now.

[–]45DayThrowaway 0 points1 point ago

No interest in the Olympics?

Do you hate puppies and rainbows as well?

[–]Lord_Rimbleton 1 point2 points ago

As an Australian I want to watch it but the commentators for most the sports don't have a fucking clue what they're going on about.

Then if we win a gold it's slow motion replay every 5 fucking minutes with people practically sucking the sports persons dick. I know its a fucking great accomplishment but fucking move on already, I don't give a shit about where that person grew up, I don't want an interview with their 2nd grade teacher. Shut the fuck up and show one of the fuck ton of sports that is going on you shit cunts.

And if an Australian is competing no matter how little the actual chance of a medal of how boring the sport the event will be shown in its entirety. Show us something different.

[–]Thirdilemma 2 points3 points ago

May I ask, why you have no interest in the Olympics?

[–]Roi_de_France 2 points3 points ago

I will take the hit.

I tend to not like people who are heavily involved in sports (except for my cousin, he is cool), watching or participating. In my experience, they are less curious, less interesting, more gregarious and less refined than people with broader interests.

I do not like competition between countries. I oppose all forms of nationalism. The medal chart always looks like a list of countries sorted by their gross domestic product.

It makes me sick to see so much money being spent on new stadiums and fireworks. I understand that it stimulates the local economy, but so would building things that are actually useful. It all seems like a huge waste of resources. The Olympic installations become ghost towns after a few months.

[–]GenericUsername02 0 points1 point ago

broader interests

I don't think being involved with sport cuts you off from the other countless numbers of hobbies/interests.

[–]Roi_de_France 1 point2 points ago

When you are in a sports team, you train with your teammates once or twice a week, you play in the weekly game, you follow the pro leagues, you attend your friends' games, you find other sports interesting and often follow their pro leagues too, you surround yourself with sports people since you have more in common, you watch games on TV with them, you try your hand at other sports for fun... It does not leave much free time for "brainier" activities and introspection. I know so many people who fit this profile.

[–]Thirdilemma 0 points1 point ago

Think of it this way. 1 billion people were watching the olympics last night. that is 1/6th of the earths population being entertained simultaneously, where else on earth will that be achieved? I also feel like there are lots of symbolic representations that are awe-inspiring. Seeing so many important figures in the same place, The queen of england, Mitt Romney and his wife, Michelle obama, The prime minister of South korea, clearly shows that the Olympics is a way for everyone to stop with what they are doing and just enjoy something.

I am with you when it comes to watching sports. I will not be watching team sports like basketball/soccer/etc. However, watching individual events is where you truly see the work of where motivation and passion can lead to.

[–]ChapelPerilous 0 points1 point ago

How is having "1/6th of the earths population being entertained simultaneously" an achievement?

...clearly shows that the Olympics is a way for everyone to stop with what they are doing and just enjoy something.

The world's elites most certainly have not stopped whatever deals they have cooking just to gather and pretend to watch a friendly game among empires... The 2-jobs-just-to-make-a-living working man will be the one truly investing his free time supporting "his" team/sport/whatever, entranced by the spectacle of it, even being left with a feeling of having been a part of something; albeit from the couch. Real passion there, yeah. Wow.

A few corporations make bank, a temporary bump for the local economy is quickly offset by the environmental destruction mandated by the modern ritual...

Meanwhile, the global bankers continue to go unpunished...

Now we are all getting screwed, the entire planet is being hit hard as the elites play at resource consolidation before the global economy collapses, but it sure is great that we can all come together here and watch some people play some games and watch some advertisements, and buy some memorabilia, and just keep watching TV.

We could be doing something constructive instead of competitive at the Olympics, just as we could be doing something more real than watching it on TV.

[–]Thirdilemma 0 points1 point ago

Yeah... I would love to continue discussing this, but you are clearly a pessimist.

How is having "1/6th of the earths population being entertained simultaneously" an achievement?

Listen to yourself, even if you don't enjoy something, be glad that other people can enjoy something.

[–]ChapelPerilous 0 points1 point ago

You didn't answer the question. What kind of achievement is that? We managed to get a huge portion of the population at large to willingly become passive consumers of our targeted commercial, competitive endeavor?

Boring...

I'm no pessimist, but I do have standards, and frankly, modern societies just aren't cutting it these days, you know? Seems that civilization may not save any of us after all! ;)

If human evolution insists on slumbering away in cultural backwash, then I'd rather pull the wool over my own eyes.

[–]StraightAsARainbow 3 points4 points ago

This is more how I feel.

[–]shmoobert 0 points1 point ago

This scares me for some reason

[–]XavierMendel 0 points1 point ago

That was absolutely horrifying.

[–]Flyslayer9 0 points1 point ago

EXACTLY

[–]chowcow 0 points1 point ago

Workin' for a cookie factory wasn't what it seemed.

[–]kngus 0 points1 point ago

...could anyone else hear the tapping?

[–]TheStrangeEli 0 points1 point ago

Jesus. This gif is creepy as fuck.

[–]x13lackx 0 points1 point ago

BENJALS!

[–]Wi_mecheng 0 points1 point ago

That's how how I feel on Reddit with no interest in cats.

[–]HAZEL285 0 points1 point ago

i know that feel bro

[–]duchovny 0 points1 point ago

The only olympic posts I've seen are Mr. Bean and how North Korea won every event.

Oh, and the queen looking like a complete cunt.

[–]Gladius01 0 points1 point ago

I was excited and enjoyed the Beijing and Vancouver Olympics, but for some reason I just don't care about this one. I might just come at the end to check how many medals my country won.

[–]broden 0 points1 point ago

On Reddit? Try living in London and being uninterested. Holy shit.

[–]IcarusCrashing 0 points1 point ago

Not even in the gymnastics portion?

[–]bricardo 0 points1 point ago

I think if I was on vacation, when I got home from the beach it would a nice thing to watch. But I am not nor will be on vacation, and I get home, I want a film, a book, and work on my drawings. And reddit...sadly.

[–]TimesWasting 0 points1 point ago

With me it's not that I don't care, it's that I have no way of watching them.

[–]spencer8828 0 points1 point ago

for some reason this gif really scares me.

[–]devinnicholas 0 points1 point ago

Maybe you should get interested you stupid Commie bastard. If you don't love America (or whatever country you're from, because that country is great too), then go fuck yourself.

[–]TheGreatL 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand how people can't find anything interesting in the Olympics. It has just about every sport, male and female versions, and includes most countries. I think it's just become a trend to not be interested in the Olympics on Reddit and it's a weird one at that.

[–]Annonymouse3 0 points1 point ago

Don't worry. As a brit I thought the ceremony was appalling, absolute sihte.

I was more interested in knowing if I had won the euromillions last night then this bloody crap.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]boredcanadian -5 points-4 points ago

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't care. The opening ceremony was on at work and I caught most of it. The first part, with the steel workers, and the part with Mr.Bean were the best part. The rest were retarded hipster bullshit, or just artsy crap. I can't wait until this is all over.

[–]smangitgurl -1 points0 points ago

no interest, really? this is why... oh screw it.

[–]bettaproger -1 points0 points ago

Fixed NSFW

[–]xprzn -2 points-1 points ago

You are a bad person, and you should feel bad.

[–]slotbadger -1 points0 points ago

To be fair, everything so far has been about the opening ceremony. Surely that's quite interesting regardless of your affinity for sports?

[–]ChapelPerilous 0 points1 point ago

Not even remotely interesting, and please stop calling me Shirley!

Seriously though: Once one realizes how the Society of the Spectacle works, the content is no longer interesting, no matter what it is.

[–]england90111 -1 points0 points ago

I really don't like the olympics, to me it's a waste of money, especially that opening show last night.

[–]jasonisnuts -1 points0 points ago

Once a month you should be given the ability to upvote or downvote something 10 times just to make sure it makes it to the front page (or not). Usually I'd downvote x10 any cat pic that almost makes it to page one. You, however, get +10 upvotes for this.

[–]lhoki69 -1 points0 points ago

Lol, I left this gif on my screen while I went to make food, when I came back it looked like he had been waiting for me this entire time, poor guy.

[–]Untitledone -4 points-3 points ago

You have as much interest in it as the queen.

[–]letmetellyouhowitis -3 points-2 points ago

it's the opening that kinda sucked, I loved the bean part but I'll mostly watch soccer and any other countries asides from US.UK get more golds/medals

Fuck you, the olympics are cool. Go play video games
