      All nationalism leads to suffering, but as humans are inherently tribalistic there really isn't any point in claiming that nationalism is necessarily a bad thing. If Germany wants to be more patriotic and celebrate their rich history (ignoring the time they tried to conquer the Earth and ethnically cleanse it of all non-Germans) I say let em'.

He's not talking about nationalism in the sense that there should be no borders and no nations. he means the nationalism that led to the feeling of superiority that your country is better than any other country in the world. That leads to a more or less self running propaganda that you look down to people from other nations and pity them, hate them, use them as scapegoat when they dare to immigrate.             But the single white stripe of the french flag is closer in size and shape to an actual white flag and in a pinch the french flag could be disassembled and the white section used for emergency surrendering purposes. (and it leads me to wonder if the french have ever done this)

              Back in 2006, when the football world championship took place in Germany, I met a group of tourists. Germany played on that day, so there were people walking around with german flags and cars had those little flags attached to the windows. The faces of those tourists were full of disgust and anger. I explained the situation, their response was 'Well Germans shouldn't walk around like that, waving their flags as if they are celebrating their country. They should be ashamed for what they did!'                 I'm generally anti-war, but in our defense, we are the most powerful nation militarily and with that power comes a responsibility.

                I didn't read the list because there are surely a ton of unjustifiable military actions, and if I try to justify any of them, I'm sure you or someone else will disagree.

                However, it's largely due to the presence of the United States Navy that the pacific ocean is virtually pirate free. A lot of brushfire wars are deterred by US military bases in the next country over. We're like the huge bouncer standing in a corner that rarely has to throw anyone out because most people take one look at us and decide not to start shit. We're just also the bouncer that sometimes throws the wrong guy out of the bar.

                  Caveat: Am not from the US.

                  The US has never lost a war on their home soil. Battles yes, ala Pearl Harbour, but never a war where they had to surrender. Germany has and WW2 has a lingering effect in peoples' minds.

                  The wars some of you are criticising the US for (I understand the criticism and it is largely fair) is in nations that don't have a large diapora outside those nations nor have an immediate impact on individuals, therefore are mostly disregarded.

                  Germany did bad shit and lost a massive war, the US does bad shit and hasn't, therefore Germany faces continued criticism.

                  I would argue that it would be very difficult to conquer the US on its own soil at any point in its history due to the right to bear arms and form militias, and the willingness of the American people to kill intruders on their property (in many places, with glee and pride).

                  I like you. And I agree wholeheartedly. The U.S definitely has a huge geographical advantage. If we ever engage in a hot war with China or Russia (or anyone), it's gonna be a long ass time before they take us over completely, if ever. Spirit is a very powerful thing (e.g the Blitz).

                  And yeah, Germans are a bit cocky. It might be a good thing though. If Hitler (technically Austrian) hadn't underestimated the Russians so much in WWII, things could be a lot different.

                  I have some German friends that came here to America for the year. Neither of them could believe how many American flags we have up all over in a bunch of random places. They just don't fly their flag, except for VERY rare occasions, and in a select few places due to their history. My friends were also shocked to learn that we have a "pledge of allegiance" that we say to the flag at school every morning. They thought it sounded a little intense and creepy.

                  History lesson time: From classical antiquity until about the mid 1800s, Germany was Europe's punching bag. The region was a constant battleground, regularly in ruins, and often under assault by France, Austria, Russia or Scandinavia. Not to mention previous powers who rampaged through the region, such as Rome and the Huns. Germany was essentially pissweak as a nation until unification. The idea of Germany as a violent, dangerous superpower is completely inaccurate, and probably invented by France, Britain, Russia and others, who were, at the time, essentially having a big sook about how the country they'd stomped on for millennia was finally strong enough to fight back.

                  The independent kingdoms of modern day Germany were as much at each others' throats as anyone else. And even up until unification, the south stood in opposition to Prussian hegemony- something that has had an impact on contemporary regional differences. While they were definitely facing external threats continuously, it is also important to remember just how much of a struggle there was between the kingdoms and duchies that would become Germany.

                  German Nationalism is actually on the rise again. It's finally become socially acceptable to wave around the German flag but only in times of National Sporting events, ie World Cup or Euro Cup. However, I've seen it become more and more prevalent in recent years here. I don't think it'll ever become like it is in America but it is getting much better.

                  As a German, i think patriotism is not a good thing. Nowhere. And I do feel ashamed if I see German flags being waved. Because right now, it's almost exclusively used to support the German football team. During some important tournaments the cars all got little flags on them, and when Germany loses, they disappear. It's so hypocritical.
