A subreddit for anything related to games (but not sports). "Related" means that posts must contain gaming-related content in the link/post body, not just a "forced" connection via the title or a caption added to the content.

"Generic" image macros/memes (where the character itself is not related to gaming) like Scumbag Steve, Good Guy Greg, etc. will be removed. Something that "reminds you of a game", or "looks like something from a game" is also not an appropriate submission.

There are no references listed here, how do I know the validity of these claims?

[–]ildracomcmxcv 5 points6 points ago

Not his/hers. http://www.ohdios.com/view/Humor%20Grafico/135765 I'm sorry but unless you made this in spanish first I would say you didn't make this. This one was first posted 7/23

[–]demonlampshade 10 points11 points ago

Allen please add sources

[–]candikan[S] 15 points16 points ago

I didn't list them but I got the information from several universities studies, such as the Rochchester University. http://news.msu.edu/story/9971/ -> another one for example.

[–]somestatic 19 points20 points ago

If you could add a small list of references in the image, I'd post it everywhere without hesitation. But thanks for making it as-is.

[–]Wootai 29 points30 points ago

I too would like to see the sources listed. I've seen some articles referring to your claims, so I at least vaguely know what you're saying is true, but some sources would really help this infographic and make it something I'd share around more.

[–]BionicBeans 1 point2 points ago

Good to know. As someone in the field of education, many teachers say video games kill creativity and make other claims opposite to what was displayed in the graphic, so having research to show otherwise is appreciated.

[–]herrsmith 1 point2 points ago

Citing your sources is important for two reasons. 1) No rational person will believe you if you don't cite your sources (unfortunately, most people are not rational and will either believe you because they already like video games, or disbelieve you because they already hate video games). 2) On the off chance that you mis-interpreted the results or - worse - the results of a previous study are invalidated, that error can be easily tracked down and not invalidate your entire argument.

p.s. What University of Rochester (assuming that's what you meant, and that there isn't a Rochester University in Minnesota) study, is it still going on, and does it pay any cash money?

[–]Reggaejunkiejew31 0 points1 point ago

This is what I came looking for. Good work.

[–]Saint-Peer 2 points3 points ago

I don't have any sources on the top of my head, but you tend to see these kind of things on the news a lot whether or not they're true. Video gamers have quicker response time than people who don't game.

[–]BionicBeans 4 points5 points ago

Sure, but you also see a lot in the news to the contrary, which is why I asked.

[–]Saint-Peer -2 points-1 points ago

IMO, I feel like a lot of the news panders to the gamers anyways.

[–]BionicBeans 1 point2 points ago

Depends what kind of news.

[–]dbbo 0 points1 point ago

[–]kurtums 0 points1 point ago

It's in colorful picture form with arrows and a cool font. I don't know what more proof you need

[–]Semi_Chivalrous 1 point2 points ago

I've got a textbook full of Mindhacks, and plenty of references are provided for gamers having and improved 'attentional blink', which is the pause between scanning for targets and switching to reacting to targets, and vice versa. This allows a gamer to react faster to threats on the road amongst other things, which you can probably work out.

Additionally, gamers have improved 'grouping' skills, meaning they can count in groups of 4s or 5s usually, which is also something most people struggle with, so their group tracking and multi tasking abilities are improved.

~Believe it or not!~

[–]Picture_Me -4 points-3 points ago

I know her, she did a lot of study to make this.

Source: Me.

[–]BionicBeans 0 points1 point ago

Lol. Totally valid.

[–]Dresdin 27 points28 points ago

Yes...good...stroke my ego...stroke it...

[–]AngelixArch -3 points-2 points ago

What I read:

Yes...good...stroke my giant erect penis ego...stroke it...

[–]KOM 18 points19 points ago

It amuses me that increased decision time is listed twice. Decreased attention span may be an offset...

[–]nearlyp 8 points9 points ago

that too. also, ability to "make" decisions faster says nothing of the quality of thought-processes or actual quality of decision

[–]LokiSquid 4 points5 points ago

"The baby is crying, should I--" "Throw it away!!!"

[–]AxumArc 0 points1 point ago

But but but I can decide twice as fast if I skip the concentration and comprehension parts.

[–]sirkarmalots 50 points51 points ago

Don't forget the fact that I can now hear people walking around corners and shoot them in the head through walls in case I'm in a terrorist takeover.

[–]mirome 15 points16 points ago

And the ability to quick-scope with heavy sniper rifles within a fraction of a second!

[–]sirkarmalots 12 points13 points ago

And instantly switch to a pistol, unload a clip and then knife them for the HUMILIATION!

[–]niinjaniinja 18 points19 points ago

And drive a train!

[–]cheesefalcon 6 points7 points ago

And the ability to go from tank division officer, to Anti-air specialist, to F-16 pilot in the middle of one battle.

[–]PhotonMalaise 6 points7 points ago

And Train Conductor.

[–]cheesefalcon 2 points3 points ago

If this were real our military would be super effective. Also my local barista would train me in tactical hand-to-hand combat.

[–]herrsmith 6 points7 points ago

As well as driving trains!

[–]cheesefalcon 1 point2 points ago

Don't worry, you can't have an army without some motherfucking trains.

[–]73820936593 -1 points0 points ago

thank god you all got heart disease instead, I'd be pretty worried.

[–]cheesefalcon 0 points1 point ago

Actually the more obese people have it. I am healthy, but don't worry your racism is easily ignored.

[–]Daibakuha 1 point2 points ago

CHOO CHOO MOTHERFUCKER!

[–]Ghooble 3 points4 points ago

Then after the knife you are able to do Squats over their head at the speed of sound! Your thighs must be so strong!

[–]AxumArc 0 points1 point ago

*magazine. since we're keeping with the realism.

"Playing video games will also make you smarter, your penis (or breasts) larger, and will be Your Plastic Pal Who's Fun To Be With" ~ Some guy on the internet

Sources for infographics. How do they work?

[–]Jithak 10 points11 points ago

My penis can confirm this.

[–]herrsmith 2 points3 points ago

Anecdotal. We need to ask EVERYBODY'S penis.

[–]Skafsgaard 2 points3 points ago

My penis is shaking its head.

[–]then_Sean_Bean_died 1 point2 points ago

Mine gave it's stamp of approval.

[–]bryce1242 1 point2 points ago

the only response i got was "thud"

[–]L4mppu 0 points1 point ago

My penis is too busy to answer... You should ask it later.

[–]byscuit 33 points34 points ago

My decision to downvote this came 25% faster when I noticed that stat was listed twice

[–]gavin201x 0 points1 point ago

You're mean.

[–]Tyaedalis 0 points1 point ago

If you want to be taken seriously, take some time to do things right.

[–]Rob9159 7 points8 points ago

They also reveal how many people have had sex with your mother

[–]herrsmith 3 points4 points ago

Apparently, it's all of them.

[–]ExAmerican 8 points9 points ago

As an avid gamer, I also have the ability to make up statistics up to 47% more quickly than the average person.

[–]Kirboid 2 points3 points ago

Wait, video games are supposed to make me decide faster?

I guess I've been playing them wrong.

[–]luKrek 0 points1 point ago

If you hadn't been playing video games your decisions would be taking x% longer, etc

Wait, why am I replying to an obvious joke? I'm logging off now.

[–]Kirboid 1 point2 points ago

Doesn't feel like it though. Do you know how long I spend trying to decide a characters name, or who to save in Mass Effect?

[–]ildracomcmxcv 2 points3 points ago

http://www.ohdios.com/view/Humor%20Grafico/135765 I'm sorry but unless you made this in spanish first I would say you didn't make this. This one was first posted 7/23

[–]kalanosh 0 points1 point ago

[–]Brewe 2 points3 points ago

They apparently don't make double checking better (reason number 1 and 4 are pretty much identical).

[–]murfi 2 points3 points ago

"make decisions 25% faster"

i can totally not confirm that.

[–]Level140 2 points3 points ago

I'm still deciding whether I can confirm or deny that claim.

[–]BR1ANSCALABR1NE 6 points7 points ago

I play lots of video games and suck at decision making, and I am creative as a rock. Also it's technically impossible to multitask to really the only valid point is hand-eye coordination. The rest is bullshit

[–]ChaoticGonzo 0 points1 point ago

Depends on the kind of game you're playing and at what level, if all you played is driving sims, don't expect to be able to micro manage fake economies.

[–]readyno 1 point2 points ago

The hand-eye coordination as termed is actually false. Using hand-eye such as moving the hand to a position that the eye correlates to such as playing catch is correct. Videogames allow for detachment of hand eye movements so that the eye can coordinate the hand to do something that is not a physical movement of the arm/hand. Doctors train with videogames to help learn this detachment so that they can use techniques for things such as laparoscopic or orthoscopic surgery which are very useful towards eliminating large scars or the amount of healing time needed to recover from an operation.

[–]zobbyblob 0 points1 point ago

My dreams are defiantly influenced by video games... I'm not sure what this means for creativity though. Maybe it allows me to have a larger pool from what I create ideas off of?

[–]thatusernameisal -1 points0 points ago

it's technically impossible to multitask

Starcraft begs to differ.

[–]Ghooble 0 points1 point ago

Dem Koreans man..and a select few Whities (HuK, Thorizain, Mana, etc)

[–]Tyaedalis 0 points1 point ago

Man, I haven't been in the SC scene for a year or two. I kinda miss it.

[–]Ghooble 0 points1 point ago

I haven't been playing much this year but I still follow streams so I am kept semi up to date

[–]Jonesy92 4 points5 points ago

[–]Xenigma 1 point2 points ago

thought this said "I made love with lots of gamers"

came in looking for NSFW.

Now I just feel dirty.

[–]jcatcol 1 point2 points ago

sources?

[–]feanturi 0 points1 point ago

Ability to get laid at will dishearteningly absent. :(

[–]FridayNightSargin 1 point2 points ago

You said the quick decision thing twice.

[–]Sandorien 0 points1 point ago

there are also studies that show they take un needed risks while driving and get in more accidents

[–]DontStepOnLegos 0 points1 point ago

Haha I play Football and most FPS's and when my coach asked how I was aware of almost everything and able to make the play, I just said video games

[–]preacherk 0 points1 point ago

Apparently they also make mistakes like saying "coordination hand-eye" instead of "hand-eye coordination"

[–]Edalol 0 points1 point ago

I remember hearing someone from Razer saying that if you have ever been guild/raid/class-leader in a MMO guild they see that as a advantage when you are applying for a job.

[–]feanturi 0 points1 point ago

I've read that elsewhere too, I think it has merit. Having responsibility for other people makes you think differently.

[–]Fragile 1 point2 points ago

I've played video games all my life and I dont feel good at any of the things listed here :(

[–]teslasmash 0 points1 point ago

List the references if you want to go pro. Also, don't list the decision-making speed bit twice; there are many other benefits you can talk about.

[–]mc_stormy 0 points1 point ago

Sauce

[–]KiloNation -1 points0 points ago

If you made this dedicated to gamers why is it on tumblr?

[–]Oideron 0 points1 point ago

Gamers are also more likely that the decision making skill has been pimped twice in this infographic

[–]ionblue 0 points1 point ago

San Francisco Rush definitely helped my ability to drive in foggy weather

[–]dabezian 0 points1 point ago

This is a lie. I'm still an indecisive fuck.

Every time I hang out with people:

"What do you guys want to do?" "uhhhhhhhhhhhh"

[–]mezacoo 1 point2 points ago

We need one with the sources on the bottom, then I'd link it to FB.

[–]spamato 0 points1 point ago

My ego is being vigorously stroked and it's making me feel uncomfortable.

[–]Venderpa 0 points1 point ago

Jeez, some girls I know should really start playing games...

[–]6aa0410284 0 points1 point ago

Uh.... you mean 6 things in the game right?

[–]Anaract 1 point2 points ago

but they also make you kill everyone. That one guy, he played video games. He killed someone.

[–]Reese_The_Puff 0 points1 point ago

So THATS why i see things faster than my friends....................

[–]ShaolinShade 0 points1 point ago

dude i play videogames and i'm officially the world's slowest decision maker. just sayin

[–]HankSpank 0 points1 point ago

It really depends on which sort of games you play. Real time strategy would probably give you a bigger bump to to your quick thinking and decision making over, say, shooters.

[–]ShaolinShade 0 points1 point ago

true... and i'm not too good at RTSs. mostly play RPGs - but i always take forever to make significant decisions and rely on guides, lol

[–]PapauNewGuinea 0 points1 point ago

I take forever to make any decisions in RPG's. Many hours have been spent in level up screens.

[–]ShaolinShade 0 points1 point ago

haha yup me too. i love it though

[–]HankSpank 0 points1 point ago

My cousin (a huge RTS gamer since the early nineties, easily 20+ hours a week for years) applied to a job for a major bank in the US and was tested on his reaction time and multitasking. They said he scored top of all time overall and he attributes it to his videogaming years, especially considering his parents are the slow to react type.

[–]orgodemir 0 points1 point ago

The pictures by each statement aren't related and those arrows are stupid. I don't get this and there are no sources listed. Sorry, but this isn't useful and seems like one of those things you forward around tumblr or whatever.

[–]wowultimation 0 points1 point ago

I call bullshit on the 6 things at once point, I can't even concentrate on having a conversation with someone without losing interest after every word and forgetting the topic at hand. Then again that could by my underlying mental health issues

[–]TheArgo 1 point2 points ago

Wtf, how does gaming improve driving in foggy weather? You made this shit up clearly...

[–]OwDaditHurts 1 point2 points ago

Fuck your watermark on a fucking infographic filled with content trademarked by nintendo. About as retarded as it gets.

[–]NotSoGoodAtPhotoshop 0 points1 point ago

So here is my thoughts: Video games is the opposite of weed. Think about it!

[–]CaptainPariah 0 points1 point ago

All gaming got me was low stress tolerance and a failed freshman year of highschool.

[–]heretoplay 0 points1 point ago

I play video games because I enjoy them. If you need any other reason to either defend or give reason to play video games, you should just stop and admit to yourself and others that you are ashamed to play video games.

[–]ItsBuck 0 points1 point ago

No one can focus on six things at once without confusing them at all. Our brain just cant multitask like that.

[–]Hungry_Gamer 0 points1 point ago

Do I have permission to use this in school if the time is right?

[–]TehWut 0 points1 point ago

improves creativity and imagination? Ha.

[–]reign_in123 0 points1 point ago

Without video games and their creativity, I wouldn't have developed my love of art. I enjoy painting because of video games. When someone tells me games rot my brain, I can't help but be bothered when I have been so inspired.

So damn right, thank you for the image support!

[–]peper224 0 points1 point ago

Who else started counting how many things they could focus on? facepalm

[–]ceri23 0 points1 point ago

Really helped teach me about the value of money, income vs. expenditure, and resource management. I played a lot of RTS games in the 90s. Sim City taught me about how out of control borrowing money can get (passing a bond basically meant "I give up" in my experience). It also taught me chivalry, morality, long term planning, and helped me get good at doing math quickly ("Will this attack kill this thing in 1 shot? Well there are 40 orcs and each orc has 23 hit points. 230x4 = 920 hp total. Attack does 905. That leaves 1 orc with a maximum damage of 14. My paladin will easily survive the encounter. ATTACK!").

Oh, early MMOs kept me busy while the rest of my high school friends got addicted to heroin too. So that was a nice bullet to dodge.

[–]FlavorousShawty 1 point2 points ago

I know I'm a bit late to the party here, but I have my two cents to give.

I have always been a console gamer, and in addition to that, I have always been the fast paced first person shooter, car racing game, you name it, kind of guy. The puzzle games never really interested me. Even to go so far as to say I didn't really like Assassin's creed. Recently I downloaded the valve bundle. Just to try. I'd never been a PC gamer before. I'd only played roller coaster tycoon, spore, and the sims, and that was it. But the very day that I played through both portal 1 and 2, I instantly felt like my brain worked in a different way. I thought faster, I solved puzzles faster. Logic worked in a different, not always linear way. I feel like my perspective has grown to include all different lines of thought. I played through half life, and started Geometry wars, and now I just feel like I am someone so much smarter. Even when I'm driving, I feel like a safer, more alert driver. Videogames changed my life. And this info graphic is pretty true

[–]Munky0512 1 point2 points ago

I call this BS, I have more than a week viewing this on Facebook but in spanish.

google says

[–]TheAppGuy 0 points1 point ago

They also teach you how to work no matter how tired you are.

[–]Kiyokami 1 point2 points ago

You can't just list all the positive effects.

Cars help people travel to places very quickly and easily...oh and they murder people and the environment.

[–]ja5087 0 points1 point ago

Disadvantages:

Loss of social life

[–]someguywhocanfly 0 points1 point ago

It's a shame these things don't seem to apply to me. Maybe it's only people that gamed from a really young age?

[–]dmg051793 0 points1 point ago

Even if these may be true, that still doesn't make me feel better for my stay-up-all-night-sleep-all-day-then-cry-for-several-hours-afterward gaming habits.

[–]Grimpillmage 0 points1 point ago

The only reason it makes you better at driving in foggy weather is that NOBODY WANTS TO GET STUCK IN SILENT HILL GODAMMIT!

[–]pablothe 0 points1 point ago

I've played videogames my entire life and my coordination still sucks outside of videogames. Does this mean I would have become a complete waste of a person in terms of coordination otherwise? Does this mean I would have become better at something else? I'm genuinely curious.

[–]Nachteule 0 points1 point ago

No human can really multitask - you can improve your task switching abilities but nobody (no not even woman) can really multitask. Even when you are juggling or doing stuff that seems to be done with multitasking is just very fast switching of tasks like catching the ball, throwing the ball and moving the arms.

I'm not sure those are true unless the difference is not noticeable.

Although I can say the problem solving part seems to be true from first-hand experience.

Gaming skills are really handy when driving.

  • "We need to turn there!"
  • "OK... Fuck, where did that light post come from?"
  • Respawn, do it again.

[–]Ausrufepunkt -1 points0 points ago

Note:
Does not apply for Call of Duty.

[–]Honey_Dog 1 point2 points ago

BS, according to this every gamer would make a good pilot. I have several gamer friends who just absolutely cannot fly in games without crashing.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Who cares? As with any art form, video games should not be valued simply as some means to an end, some sort of tool for education or social improvement, but for their intrinsic value as a form of storytelling and art.

[–]thekingofnarwhals -1 points0 points ago

[–]DrKittyMittens 0 points1 point ago

Perfect aim

Yes because aiming in video games and real life is the same thing

[–]MrPlow442 -1 points0 points ago

I'm a gamer. Been a gamer for most of my life and i haven't noticed any improvements mentioned in your infographic.
