Not everyone that works at an Apple store is a certified Apple "Genius". If they approached you they're probably just a regular apple drone. Geniuses rarely leave the safety of their counter

[–]Bargom 272 points273 points ago

This is correct. The counter is home, the counter is safe. No, you can't come behind my counter.

[–]synthetase 12 points13 points ago

There will come a horrible day when the counter is no more. It is coming. I bet it's soon.

[–]Bargom 2 points3 points ago

I'm no longer employed there so it's a case of "Not my chair, not my problem".

[–]tonywartooth 3 points4 points ago

Who bought this floor? Sucker.

[–]Bargom 1 point2 points ago

Captain tying knots.

[–]synthetase 1 point2 points ago

Ditto. Still sucks for my friends still in the trenches.

[–]FishBonePendant 56 points57 points ago

What if my name is iJustine?

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points ago

Then you can come to my bedroom.

[–]MindlessDreamer 1 point2 points ago

Come in my bedroom

[–]Bargom 53 points54 points ago

Even worse.

[–]DarkRend 28 points29 points ago

Then I would upper-cunt you.

Its wrong, but its so hilarious. Can't stop laughing.

"Using my vacation days"

[–]LordGrey 5 points6 points ago

I was a firedog at circuit city before they went down in flames, and I can confirm this as a usual retail store's techy trend.

Come behind my counter and I'll fucking cut you!

[–]brocksamson222 61 points62 points ago

Quite literally "safety". If I ever ventured out from behind the counter it took 20 minutes to get back with dozens of specialists asking you questions. In some stores the management would reprimand you if you were not in your specific "zone".

Here goes the positions in an Apple Store:

*1) Store Manager-rarley seen, depending on the store usually in the back

*2) Sr. and Assitant Store Managers- The managers you usually see

*3) Lead Genius- Basically does the scheduling for the Geniuses and takes flak when they fall behind on their numbers

*4) Genius-The guys you see behind the bar taking Mac appointments

*5) Family Room specialist- They do data transfers and iPhone appointments

*6)Lead Specialist or Expert-The most "knowledgeable" specialist, supposed to be in charge of other specialists numbers.

*7) Specialists- The people that sell the product. Usually hired for their personality or in the past because they knew a manager and not their Apple knowledge.

*8) Creatives- The trainers of one to one

*9) ICS- Inventory Control Specialists- Controls the inventory and reports missing items.

*10) Visuals- In charge of setting up all the displays and items on the shelf per Apple specs

Might have forgotten a few or the job title changed(happens every few years)

[–]dewie68 9 points10 points ago

Yeah that's pretty close. I'm too lazy to correct you but pretty much. You forgot Genius Admin.

[–]tripled153 9 points10 points ago

He also forgot back of house specialist which is different from ICS.

[–]macadam 7 points8 points ago

It's been about 5 years, but not all stores have a Genius Admin. We had to meet certain repair metrics to qualify. Didn't take long, though.

[–]brocksamson222 1 point2 points ago

lol, just realized I did Im pretty sure most customers have never seen them, but yeah. Genius Admin is the guy in the back handling the shipping and receiving of parts for repairs and the computers when they get shipped back from depot. Haven't worked there in about a year so, I've forgotten quite a bit.

[–]logical_fish 4 points5 points ago

Experts (not Lead Specialist) - People who are a bump up from Specialist. Very knowledgable. They must pass tech panel interviews to get the job and the questions are very in-depth.

Business Team - There for the business customers and consists of the Business Manager and the team of Business Specialists.

Store Manager Leader - Small correction

Certain stores now have Market Trainers that conduct new hire and ongoing training for the entire market.

[–]sealer2050 1 point2 points ago

Why are there so many people working in one store? That's more than most retail chains have.

[–]brocksamson222 10 points11 points ago

Amount of customers Vs. amount of employees. Literally thousands and thousands of people in a store a day. The apple store I worked in was relatively small so as you can imagine it could become very crowded. something between 100-130 employees total during the peak season.

[–]Loudmouth_American 10 points11 points ago

upvote for work buddies

[–]ThisWay27 24 points25 points ago

Yeah. The salespeople at the Apple store are "Specialists."

[–]BernzSed 7 points8 points ago

Is that because they're "special"?

[–]houssc 12 points13 points ago

Nah, it's cuz they specialize in removing dried up semen from laptops.

[–]MestR 2 points3 points ago

Ugh, that reminded me of one of my friends' macbook...

[–]mrhallpass 8 points9 points ago

what.

[–]DanRoad 1 point2 points ago

Some people just aren't civilised enough to use a cardboard box.

[–]stferago 1 point2 points ago

That reminds me, I still need to take my Macbook to a Specialist this weekend.

[–]MasterBistro 2 points3 points ago

From the frequency of this joke, I assume this actually happens to people. Do people really find it that hard to aim away or something?

[–]knowitall69 1 point2 points ago

We aren't just regular drones. We are called specialists. But thanks. Now I'm sad :(

[–]mrbucket777 256 points257 points ago

The geniuses don't approach people in apple stores, thats just normal salespeople.

[–]playfulcyanide 32 points33 points ago

Nice catch.

[–]JeddakofThark 35 points36 points ago

You showed him. He won't soon live down this embarrassment.

[–]sunny559 7 points8 points ago

the "specialists" approach you.

[–]SirNewtonsApple 1 point2 points ago

as an Apple employee I can confirm this, Geniuses avoid customers like all hell.

[–]wtf_ffs 188 points189 points ago

A duck walks into a Genius bar, and says "I would've flown in, but you don't have any windows," picks up an iPad and says "Put it on my bill."

[–]Flonkkertiin 1 point2 points ago

Fuck you man. Original duck song 4 lyfe!

[–]capt_0bvious 45 points46 points ago

Who would have thunk...a redditor thinks he knows more than everyone else...

[–]PhoenixKnight 128 points129 points ago

To be fair, they are much better than Geek Squad.

[–]Senor_Wilson 65 points66 points ago

Yes. Apple actually has pretty incredible customer service. That said, they should because they charge you a million dollars for a computer.

[–]dasberd 16 points17 points ago

I once fucked up a repair request (because I'm an idiot) online and ordered a $70 cable that hooks your iPod or iPhone into the back of your TV. I called and explained my mistake, they couldn' t make the repair for free(out of warranty) so I would have just been buying a refurb iPod touch. So they gave me a 20% off coupon for the store, gave me a refund for the cable, and then let me keep the cable.

I'll never buy a Mac computer, but fuck they do portable eletronics, customer service, and marketing right.

[–]Senor_Wilson 2 points3 points ago

I had one of their original MacBooks a while back and it was pretty much a lemon. Had many problems with the logic board(motherboard) and was constantly needed repair. Even after my warranty was up they fixed it for free and they always did it quick - Plus they have a well trained call staff and they aren't based in India(or they weren't; not sure about now).

[–]CaptnAwesomeGuy 5 points6 points ago

Even if they wipe out all competition with stupid legalities, at least we'll have great customer service.

[–]serious_face 1 point2 points ago

as a Mac owner and former millionaire, I can confirm this

[–]IrishTek 13 points14 points ago

Ex-Squadder here. I'd like to think I used to provide a great service despite the price. Every store is different, but it's a generalization to say they're all bad.

That said, I'm going to be a hypocrite in saying that on August 1st, they're merging the customer service counter into Geek Squad after firing about 600 Geek Squad veterans. You're generalization is about to get a whole hell of a lot more accurate.

But, I got my real IT job, so whatevs.

[–]sweet_n_salty 5 points6 points ago

Same opinion here. I thankfully had very little customer interaction, worked in back on repairs. I kept track of my return rate, and only had a 2% return issue rate (usually the issue wasn't identified by the user when they brought it in). I will say this though, without being an agent for 4 years, I definitely wouldn't be the admin I am today.

[–]ThEgg 2 points3 points ago

I agree, I hate when people make these generalizations about sales people, tech people, or just customer service associates in general.

However, it's not necessarily going to be more true after Aug. 1st. Best Buy is sending every employee off to training for their departments now. In this way, we'll have Geek Squad members who are trained more formally than through a bunch of videos online.

[–]IrishTek 1 point2 points ago

You're right, and I said I was being a hypocrite, lol.

I know for a fact that the stores in my Tri-state area (only 3 of them) are going to be incredibly fucked. Especially Cape Girardeau. The DCI there is an absolute moron, and people are transferring out of Customer Service and quitting Geek Squad faster than they can even interview replacements.

[–]MustacheWilliams 2 points3 points ago

Why does everyone hate geek squad?

[–]SCREAMING_DUMB_SHIT 84 points85 points ago

They basically charge you an outragous fee to ask "Have you tried restarting your computer?" then leaving.

[–]AxeManActual 17 points18 points ago

When someone comes to your house and fixes a problem for you, you pay them. It doesn't make you smart for needing them to solve a simple problem, though...

[–]peanutbudder 11 points12 points ago

Yes, but the problem is they charge outrageous fees, especially to the elderly, for things that should not be charged that much. Seriously, my grandmother took a laptop to geeksquad (without talking to me first), and they told her it was dead, gone and unusable. The fix was the first fucking result on Google. Caps were overcharged and just needed to be flushed.

I'm not saying every Geek Squad sucks dick, but every Geek Squad sucks dick.

[–]lnclincoln 5 points6 points ago

Restarting a computer fixes most problems. A lot of computer issue's are from services which need to be restarted. It's always good to ask.

[–]OneSilentE 1 point2 points ago

Do geek squad employees actually know anything about computers, or are all the problems they deal with just extremely simple ? That would be an interesting AMA

[–]BernzSed 1 point2 points ago

If they actually knew about computers they probably wouldn't be working at Geek Squad.

[–]DangerousIdeas 3 points4 points ago

Isn't that the users fault for not trying that option?

[–]dvdanny 2 points3 points ago

To add to what was said, all they can really do is wipe your HD also there's been some articles about Geek Squad employees snooping around customer data. Here's one article. For the non-computer savvy local repair shops are usually better.

[–]Ultrace-7 1 point2 points ago

This is the real issue in my opinion. There will always be people who charge more to fix something than it would cost if you did it yourself; we've simply added computer repair personnel to the likes of plumbers and mechanics. However, with the multiple instances on record of Best Buy Geek Squad team members looking up inappropriate or irrelevant material on user computers, it's a big black mark. Yes, companies are staffed by humans, and humans are flawed creatures, but in a position where employees are being given ready access to personal (often highly personal) data from customers, there need to be safeguards in place--monitoring, work logs, something.

[–]LynkDead 1 point2 points ago

They overcharge by a ridiculous amount for a below mediocre service.

[–]UnexpectedSchism 1 point2 points ago

Because it used to be good, Best Buy bought it and completely gutted it. Now people with almost no computer knowledge works there.

Even if they get the college student who knows what he is doing over the summer, the knowledgable person has no real way to do things right, because best buy forces them to only do the work best buy lets them. This will be fixing computers by convincing the customer to buy mcaffee.

[–]turo9992000 1 point2 points ago

They'll plug in your Ps3 or Xbox for $130. One HDMI cable and one Power cable. Anyone that payed that should be kicked right in the balls.

[–]jcl945 3 points4 points ago

I have worked on tons of computers that have been worked on by Geek Squad, and I really can't tell if they are totally incompetent or just scamming. It makes me sick. In all fairness though, I can only confirm this for my area.

[–]sweet_n_salty 4 points5 points ago

As a former GS agent, and now a system admin, I can agree and disagree at the same time. We had 3 stores including mine within 45 miles of each other and all 3 were different. I was sent to both stores on different occasions to help cover while they hired more help, and some (not all) of the "agents" were serious window lickers, who couldn't find a power button if it was the size of a softball, let alone know how to identify a root-kit and remove it. Not all of use were/are incompetent, but I totally agree they've transitioned more into the selling of the services, rather than hiring knowledgeable people.

[–]JackTrueborn 4 points5 points ago

I had an interview with them a few months ago while looking for a second job doing something I enjoy. I turned down the second interview after my first job's schedule picked up, but during the first interview, I remember distinctly being told "We have a lot of people interview with us who only want to fix computers, but this is Best Buy. We're a store first. We're here to sell things. We know we might charge more for tech services, but that's the nature of the beast." It seemed if they had to choose between people who were tech-savvy and people who were good salesmen, the salesmen were the preferred choice.

[–]gh0stdylan 1 point2 points ago

I work at Geek Squad City. I can say that agents that worked there seem more competent than what I always read about in these bashing threads about Geek Squad from in-store agents.

[–]sweet_n_salty 2 points3 points ago

I didn't intend for anyone to think that was a bash on GS agents everywhere, it's more of a fail on a manager's level for not properly training their people. I corresponded with extremely smart guys and gals on the GS forums. However, unfortunately you've probably never had to work in a store, face to face with customers who send their stuff out to the service center, only to have it come back with the same problem. So, I wouldn't go so far as saying they're all geniuses. Not to mention, people in these threads don't ever meet service center agents, they only deal with the shirt and tie wearers in the store, and that's what they base their experiences off of.

[–]Darchseraph 1 point2 points ago

I am applying for a part time GS position this year at my College Town. What kind of advice would you give for getting the job? Hopefully I do a better CS job than some of the whackjob stories floating around.

[–]NextName 2 points3 points ago

As someone who has worked as Best Buy as a Geek Squad Computer Tech, it's a mix of both. Most of the people I worked with, including my supervisor, didn't know much about computers, other than how to put AV on and (barely) how to format a hard drive. I worked as an in-store specialist rather than one who drives out to people's homes, so it may be different, but I doubt by much.

[–]MustacheWilliams 1 point2 points ago

Ya they charge way to much for the work that they do

[–]Shnitenta 2 points3 points ago

I work with several internet service providers and customers tell me when they take their computers to geek squad for $100's to reinstall browsers or tell them nothing is wrong. I watched a special where a news group unplugged their HDD and brought it to geek squad and they diagnosed it as broken and recommended a new one. Several computer shops in the area corrected the issue very quickly by plugging in the "broken" HDD.

[–]Bargom 65 points66 points ago

Geniuses are the technicians in the store, they don't wander around or approach you unless you have an appointment. By the virtue of having an appointment, you are asking them for help.

If you know so much, just do everyone that works there a favor and order your shit online.

[–]fswmacguy 22 points23 points ago

'Round these parts, we don't take kindly to pro-Apple logic.

[–]yousillygit 17 points18 points ago

Then why are you at the apple store?

[–]ary201 31 points32 points ago

That's exactly how I feel when I walk into the jerk store.

[–]x755x 18 points19 points ago

What does it matter? OP is their all-time bestseller!

[–]Lkr721993 7 points8 points ago

yeah, well, op had sex with your wife

[–]powernut 2 points3 points ago

I bet you set off their inventory control alarms when you try to leave.

[–]robwgibbons 23 points24 points ago

Ex-Genius here. I came from a heavy tech background building my own computers, working for several PC repair companies, programming and using Linux exclusively for years. I am the exact kind of guy this image macro is talking about. And it was still very difficult to get that job. The amount of inherent peer competition you go through just to get a position at Apple, let alone as a Genius, is incredible. Sure, the job title might be a bit condescending, but it's just a title and it's more to give credit to their people for the "people skills" they ask for and the amount of technical training they go through. The training and development they require, even after proving your tech abilities, is intimidating. So, sorry if you got treated poorly or had to wait a few hours when you didn't make an appointment in the first place. Before you complain, think of the bullshit these guys go through every single day.

[–]bdmflyer 6 points7 points ago

I don't know how much Geniuses know but going off of the average Genius salary I sourced online, you're either over-estimating how much the average Genius knows, or they're severely underpaid.

I got paid more as an intern Software Developer than the "Apple Genius High End Salary."

[–]fenixtx112 7 points8 points ago

Ex-genius here as well.... This is all too true. Though the stupid ass jokes about the job title get old REAL quick

[–]stickoff 3 points4 points ago

I have an ACSP and ACMT certs from Apple. I'm sorry but the "training" you have to go through to get those certs is a joke. Everyone at the "Genius" bar only needs an ACSP. A retard could fart and pass that test. Cisco, Microsoft certs are...you know...a challenge.

I had a guy there tell me that the problem with Windows is they are still using DLLs. Are you kidding me?

[–]robwgibbons 1 point2 points ago

Actually you get a ACMT in Cupertino before you ever get behind that bar.

[–]Tier4 1 point2 points ago

DLL conflicts died with the invention of the Microsoft Installer (MSI) format over a decade ago.

[–]toad2711 5 points6 points ago

Left the Sprint store a little earlier today and thought the same thing when they tried to explain the different phones to me

[–]fortinj1354 12 points13 points ago

"Well this one has the 4gees." "WiMax or LTE?" "Uh... yes?"

[–]dizzi800 1 point2 points ago

Does anyone still use WiMax? I thought it kind of failed? (Also: Isn't WiMax effectively wifi?)

[–]fortinj1354 1 point2 points ago

My phone has WiMax. I don't, but my phone can get it.

[–]whimsicalsteve 5 points6 points ago

I used to work as a "Genius" at an Apple store. I have to say that out of all the customers that think that, 90% of them are wrong.

[–]ink_golem 9 points10 points ago

But not enough to realize that you were approached by a Specialist...

[–]guitarmt3095 465 points466 points ago

if you knew more than him then you should have been shopping for a PC...

EDIT: SRSLY GUISE i made that comment as a joke. i personally enjoy both working on mac os and windows (along with linux, but i've only had one PC running that). The only reason i prefer to build my own PC or buy one, is simply because i get more for my money. i would probably own many more apple products than i do now (i've owned an ipod mini, ipod touch 1g and ipod touch 4g) if their prices were lower. i didn't mean to "offend" anyone by saying this.

[–]JTDeuce 583 points584 points ago

Correction: He would be building a PC.

[–]duck_oil 109 points110 points ago

[–]wing-attack-plan-r 9 points10 points ago

i read this as build apc.

i was disappointed that i didn't find out how to make my own armored personnel carrier

[–]ScarabTongue 1 point2 points ago

Some Polish resistance fighters managed to make one in Nazi-occupied Warsaw, how hard can it be? (Now this would be an interesting Top Gear challenge)

[–]Richgart 41 points42 points ago

CHECK THE LINK OUT FFS. /r/buildapc IS THE BEST! SHAMELESS PLUG CHECK IT OUT SAVE MONEY GET HELP DO IT ALL

[–]bistoha2 28 points29 points ago

I managed to build a decent pc for 300 pounds using build a pc, that subreddit came in very handy.

[–]dragonnovsvd 34 points35 points ago

I built one for 500 kilograms.

[–]Richgart 8 points9 points ago

Yeah. I built a cheapier for 350 USD, so go figure.

[–]TrampyKnight 2 points3 points ago

Super great community. Helped me to build my little baby and he has been working ever since.

[–]SniperTooL 1 point2 points ago

Well to be fair, they were half right, you have to buy the components before you can build it.

[–]ew629 105 points106 points ago

He could be there buying an Ipod. Not like he's gonna buy a zune, c'mon.

[–]ThisWay27 46 points47 points ago

Damn. I felt that sting.

[–]Kowzorz 4 points5 points ago

I just use my phone.

[–]leedorham 47 points48 points ago

[–]Suzy_Creamcheese 12 points13 points ago

I need to know what this is from.

[–]Duramax159 6 points7 points ago

South Federal, Denver.

[–]jacksokbrooks 3 points4 points ago

Then he should be building a glorious pc.

[–]anxiousalpaca 113 points114 points ago

GLORIOUS PC MASTER RACE

[–]pcgamingelitist 55 points56 points ago

You called?

[–]ecmmyers 6 points7 points ago

Actually, we were looking for the group of people that specialize in political correctness, but are so politically correct that they never go out and present themselves as such, preferring to go by "slightly more aware than average about political accuracies and social faux-pas".

[–]dryredwine 44 points45 points ago

You should see the Artificial Intelligence department at University of Maryland.

Macs everywhere.

People a lot smarter than me (and presumably you, unless you can compare to the harvard, MIT, and berkeley educated AI professors) strongly prefer Macs.

[–]ScarabTongue 14 points15 points ago

I believe it happens quite a lot as it allows you to dualboot both windows and mac osx (and Linux!) on one computer. That and macs aren't that bad, if a little overpriced for what you get.

[–]polite_fox 7 points8 points ago

Over priced, yes, but depending on your needs, can be the best machines on the market. I run a PC rig for gaming, and I run my macbookpro Retina for my work.

[–]RealityRush 2 points3 points ago

Fun fact about the retinas: they are advertised as up to 2880x1800p resolution, when, in fact, the image displayed is always scaled down to 1920x1200p maximum unless you are an advanced user (as in programmer that is willing to mess with the OS to get it to work) that wants to force 1 to 1 scaling and make everything illegible. They are charging you extra money for resolution you will never use, nor could ever use on a screen that small.

So when people ask why I dislike Apple products, that is one good reason right there, lying to their customers so they can feel "cutting-edge". If that high a resolution was advantageous in that small of a screen, someone would have done it years ago for less money.

For further example of this: Exhibit A and Exhibit B.

Tech specs identical (with the minor except of the HDD vs. SSD), both aluminium, solidly built cases, great designs, good trackpads, better dedicated sound on the ASUS and a blu-ray RW drive, yet the Macbook is $1000 more.... how is that not a ripoff in every sense of the word? Why couldn't you just buy the ASUS, grab OSX Lion for $30, and put it on the ASUS laptop? It's the same thing. And ASUS laptops have a better reliability rating than Apple, so you can't talk shit about superior design integrity and durability...

Please explain to me what this superior Apple design is all about that justifies the extra $1000, I would love to hear it. Is it because it is more white?

[–]ILoveTriangles 40 points41 points ago

MacBook Pros are also the standard at Stanford CS, valley startups, and major companies in the bay area (Google, Facebook, etc.)
The value of good design and terminal is huge for productivity and overall feel. I don't understand why people unambiguously knock macs on reddit.

[–]Aldrenean 4 points5 points ago

Because you have to accept Apple's definition of good design. I would be fine with Macs if they let you alter ANYTHING about the UI, but you are limited to irrelevant cosmetic tweaks and can't change anything related to usability. Apple wants to homogenize all of their users and platforms, and that is not what I want.

[–]jb_ 37 points38 points ago

Some people simply can't get understand the concept that specs aren't the only thing that matters, say for example, a touchpad that is actually usable.

[–]RC_Matthias 4 points5 points ago

dat touchpad

[–]dubloe7 1 point2 points ago

I have found fewer touchpads less usable than those on macs.

[–]jb_ 2 points3 points ago

Why?

[–]HuXu7 5 points6 points ago

All touch pads are unusable, give me a nub in the middle of my keyboard, now that IS usable! Not sarcastic.

[–]Loudergood 5 points6 points ago

Fuck yes, Trackpoint FTW

[–]user_name2 14 points15 points ago

They like feeling superior and calling us mac users fanboys and sheep.

[–]johansolo 2 points3 points ago

That's funny, I'm a Ph.D. candidate in AI at the University of Texas at Arlington, and we have more Linux boxes than anything.

[–]granadesnhorseshoes 29 points30 points ago

You misunderstand what you are seeing on two counts. One, they are basically GIVEN those macs by Apple. Even if they wanted another type of hardware this is one case where it would actually cost the school more.

Two, The hardware is NOT "better" because it is in fact THE SAME EXACT HARDWARE. The distinction between PC and MAC is completely nonexistent sense Apple switched to x86 processors.

These are workstations, it doesn't matter of their development environment has a purdy cocoa or carbon interface or a GTK or MFC interface. But they sure as fuck aren't making Skynet using Apples Objective-C Xcode IDE. So the badge on the side of the case means fuck all to them either way.

[–]sbrocket 15 points16 points ago

One, they are basically GIVEN those macs by Apple. Even if they wanted another type of hardware this is one case where it would actually cost the school more.

You greatly overestimate the deals that schools get on Macs. They could very easily get something cheaper if that's what they wanted.

Source: My father is an Apple account manager to colleges

[–]RiseDarthVader 6 points7 points ago

I think nowadays when people refer the Mac hardware being better they are referring to the design. You have to admit the MacBook Pro unibody is one sexy design. I'm a desktop PC gamer and I'm getting a MacBook Pro retina for school work because of the sexy design and trackpad.

[–]adamkex 9 points10 points ago

They use Scientific Linux and Ubuntu at CERN. What's your point?

[–]foxh8er 28 points29 points ago

They want a unix-based terminal, but they want it to "just work".

That and the hardware is superior.

[–]BernzSed 19 points20 points ago

This exactly. I like having a UNIX environment at my fingertips, but I don't hate myself enough to run Linux.

[–]Tmmrn 2 points3 points ago

Hm. How much exactly do I hate myself?

[–]awpti 9 points10 points ago

the hardware is superior

What? It's PC hardware, usually a few months behind the PC world when it comes to releases.

[–]MrGreencastle 3 points4 points ago

I think he means the hardware as in material, build quality, etc.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Ubuntu? Anyone? PC's can run linux.

[–]sbrocket 10 points11 points ago

Sometimes, people's time is too valuable to dick around with Linux all day and they'd still rather have a *nix environment. And they don't want to deal with Cygwin.

And that's coming from someone on a hand-built Windows 7 PC sitting next to a MacBook Pro that's currently backing up to an Ubuntu-based NAS, so don't bother trying to insinuate that I have platform tunnel vision. Linux is still rarely the best solution for a desktop OS.

[–]th3An0nyMoose 8 points9 points ago

I love Ubuntu (well, pre-Unity) but it's nowhere near as stable as Mac OS X

[–]Cueball61 1 point2 points ago

And lose application support.

[–]JackTrueborn 4 points5 points ago

UMUC? They have exclusivity contracts with Apple.

[–]Ikkath 9 points10 points ago

Myself and almost all the academics I have ever worked with use Macbooks.

Unix backend, well designed front end, the hardware is gorgeous and sturdy. All the people who hate on Apple products literally have no use for computers beyond a browser and games it seems...

[–]iplawguy 1 point2 points ago

I haven't worked in cog sci/AI for 10 years (was my minor), but I never saw a mac at 3 different schools--all used unix and pc. Macs may be getting more popular, and they may be popular for some departments, but I very much doubt they have suddenly become the norm.

[–]BernzSed 8 points9 points ago

All Macs since 2002 have run on Mac OS X, which is built on top of UNIX. Since then, Macs have become much more popular among software developers.

[–]reddit_hates_freedom 15 points16 points ago

Every Mac computer produced by Apple since 2006 is a PC. They just happen to be the only PCs licensed to run OS X and do not come with Windows. And there's that EFI stuff. But Windows 95 will still run natively on all of them.

"PC" should not be used as a synonim for Microsoft Windows, because many people run other operating systems on their x86 machines.

PC can also have a broader meaning, not just meaning IBM PC-compatible, but any computer used primarily by an individual rather than as a server.

[–]AndrewNeo 4 points5 points ago

All newer PC motherboards (at least on Intel's side) are EFI too.

[–]kill-9all 2 points3 points ago

You have to have a mac to make iOS Apps, no way around it.

[–]whoareyouandwhy 15 points16 points ago

Do you think you know more than this guy, because he's pretty knowledgeable. There are tons of very high-level, intelligent Mac users. Just because you disagree with their opinion, or value other qualities, doesn't make you somehow smarter. I'll bet you didn't know that Tim Berners-Lee wrote the beginning of the world wide web on a NeXT - a predecessor of the current Mac OS. Think he's an idiot, too?

[–]Nodonn226 9 points10 points ago

Yea man, I'm sure all those people in my gen-ed sociology class were using their $1000-1500 macbook for the same things as Linus Torvalds. Definitely not for facebook which they could surf on a $300-500 netbook.

[–]adkjshdashduyew 3 points4 points ago

Maybe they value different things in their computer? Like the design or a trackpad that doesn't completely suck. You know, stuff normal people like.

[–]RC_Matthias 2 points3 points ago

If you weren't ignorant you'd know Macs are PC's...

[–]waffleninja 1 point2 points ago

This post was a repost. The original post said Best Buy, not Apple store.

[–]SilverAce88[S] 5 points6 points ago

I went to help my dad make the least bad decision possible.

[–]Circuitfire 24 points25 points ago

Aiding and abetting. Ok, lock him up boys....

[–]ary201 16 points17 points ago

Bake him away, toys.

[–]SenatorPenguin 1 point2 points ago

This. I had my grandfather get an iMac, so I can tell him to just bring it in to the store (he lives down the street from one) and ask the geniuses. He visited so often after his logic board started to die, they just gave him a brand new iMac (his was even a year out of warranty).

You forgot the "neck" in your username

[–]sarcastic_smartass 5 points6 points ago

Your intellect is so impressive.

[–]mediocre_genius 5 points6 points ago

I hate it when people are rude to service people who politely ask if the people want help. It's their job to ask. So be polite, and say no thank you, instead of being a rude asshole and saying, "I know more than you." Arrogant fuck.

[–]Quas36Oh 1 point2 points ago

Except he didn't say this. He said exactly what you said he should then went home to make this comic.

[–]pdxer 8 points9 points ago

You generally don't get approached by a Genius. You get approached by a Specialist. Geniuses work behind counters or in the back. And despite the popular opinion on Reddit, Geniuses (though yes, it's a stupid and assumptive title) actually do know their stuff. Many come from tech backgrounds and build PCs and Hackintoshes in their free time.

[–]goggimoggi 11 points12 points ago

Fail #1: Geniuses won't approach you.

Fail #2: You probably don't. They know their shit.

[–]Ryouko 2 points3 points ago

Back when I used Dreamhost.com to host a website I saw that one of the questions you had to fill out on their tech support form was "How much do you know about webhosting?", or something along those lines. One of the possible answers was "No offense, but probably more than you." I liked it because I hate getting talked to like I'm an idiot.

[–]dixiequeer 2 points3 points ago

Lame

[–]Madrizzle1 2 points3 points ago

Genius' won't approach you. They stay at the bar. A specialist is the person who walks up to you, and they don't have to be techies...just pleasant.

[–]Sn4tch 2 points3 points ago

I used to work as a Genius at Apple and honestly I feel like the group of people who were originally "geniuses" at the store were smart and well informed but Apple has go the way of hiring brainwashable employees. They no longer can help the way they used to. So I left and I am now a Technical Specialist for a TV Production company working on shows like Sons of Guns and Modern Marvels.

[–]MustacheWilliams 23 points24 points ago

I down voted this post cause I think it's rude to assume you're smarter than someone. The apple people are just doing their jobs.

[–]benny121 5 points6 points ago

You actually have to be pretty qualified to work there, according to staff.

[–]AAKurtz 3 points4 points ago

If this were true I would be one of the first people to agree and support the comment... I love ripping on Apple, the fact is, it isn't true. I worked at an Apple store for a little over a year and the geniuses really do know their shit. Whats REALLY going on here is that the people that shop at Apples stores are fucking pompous know-it-alls who I'm sure feel like they know everything better than those around them.

[–]Rubix89 13 points14 points ago

[–]fixorater 5 points6 points ago

Generally, you're not going to be "approached" by a genius- they stay behind the bar helping people who have made appointments. The average staff are called "mac specialists" and I'd agree many of them don't have much of any technical knowledge. The geniuses themselves are actually pretty knowledgeable about Apple Hardware / Macs (sometimes PCs too), at least when compared to the average repair tech at a computer store.

[–]iamnoss 8 points9 points ago

ITT: Apple bashing from people who have never used an Apple product in their life.

[–]brocksamson222 17 points18 points ago

Used to work for Apple as a Genius. I can say this is probably true.

[–]thunderfox 5 points6 points ago

Also used to be a Genius. I never knew how miserable it actually is to go and get your Mac fixed until I was on the other side of the counter.

[–]brocksamson222 7 points8 points ago

We had a saying at our store. Swap, Swap, Swap, Swap, EVERYBODY, Swap, Swap... lol

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]thunderfox 3 points4 points ago

The sad thing is, some of these kids have no clue what came before a MacBook Pro and they're looking at me like I don't know anything about my own machine. I've used Apples since the Apple II!

[–]Cromiell 5 points6 points ago

Why are you in the Apple store, then?

[–]bluebroham 1 point2 points ago

Are you sure you're not one of those guys that think they know more?

I hate those guys.

[–]roiperez 1 point2 points ago

I know someone who has gone through the training process to become an Apple Genius, it's very very intense. I have respect for them and their knowledge.

[–]iamruthene 1 point2 points ago

The techs at Apple don't approach you. If you're talking to a genius at Apple it's because you made an appointment to speak with one.

[–]brimley 1 point2 points ago

you don't know as much as you think you do.

[–]fenixtx112 5 points6 points ago

Quick let's all be cool and hate apple now since its becoming more and more popular. There has to be some reason they compete with Exxon mobile... Since no one else EVER has

[–]Traii 1 point2 points ago

Not about Macs obviously.

[–]chip8222 3 points4 points ago

Would you say the same about your mechanic? Your plumber? Your Doctor? Many of the people in the Apple store have been there for YEARS and have to deal with smart ass customers all day every day. I worked my ass off for 4 years for Apple, and I don't appreciate fuckwads such as yourself thinking that just because you've opened disk utility twice in your life you know what the hell your talking about. Troubleshoot 1000 macs and 5000 phones and then tell me how much you know.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

You feel like posting stupid shit to reddit when approached by an apple genius?

That sucks. Please stop.

[–]freezway 8 points9 points ago

Me: "Does you have any TRS to RCA splitter cables?"

Best Buy Guy: "What?"

[–]tensoccs 37 points38 points ago

Does you speak English as a second language?

[–]Talvoren 2 points3 points ago

If you need cables, just use Amazon. They're about 2 bucks plus shipping for normal lengths.

[–]FranciumGoesBoom 5 points6 points ago

No, no they don't. Try radio shack for all your cable needs.

[–]Darchseraph 5 points6 points ago

Monoprice is better.

[–]dirtyfries 4 points5 points ago

Radio Shack has gotten pretty bad as of late. They rarely know what I'm talking about. Fry's seems to do a bit better.

[–]asherrd 1 point2 points ago

Last few times I went to a radio shack they had about a 4 square feet area for cables. I could not find a single thing I was looking for. monoprice.com all the way now

[–]johnnicely 5 points6 points ago

My roommate works as an Apple Genius, and you're wrong, WRONG, I tell you. (obligatory) 1) They actually do know more than you, unless they just started working as a Genius. 2) They do not "walk up to you". They always stay behind the counter, because their job is repair and service, not meet, greet, and sell. The guys who greet you at an Apple store are Front Room Specialists. And in that case, you probably would know more than them. ;]

[–]Msingh999 2 points3 points ago

*Family Room Specialists

[–]dingoperson 4 points5 points ago

My experience at an Apple store:

Me: I am looking for an iPhone that...

He: We don't have any.

Me: ...

He: That's a joke.

HA-HAAA

[–]lolsv 2 points3 points ago

If you know more than an apple 'genius' why the fuck are you at an Apple store? Because you don't, you're a fucking fuck face.
