I'm always surprised when such famous things like this get into WTF.

[–]Zhang5 78 points79 points ago

Here's what appears to be the whole thing (The Gashlycrumb Tinies) for folks who don't want to deal with it being a gif.

[–]bytesmith 19 points20 points ago

It makes a lovely poster and it's fun to teach to nieces and nephews alike.

[–]superherogrrl 15 points16 points ago

I bought one for my son :)

[–]zvercher 6 points7 points ago

My 2 year old loves it! His aunt used to read it to him all the time, so we bought him a copy.

[–]GreatGroovyGood 2 points3 points ago

Uhh...

[–]Jaboomaphoo 4 points5 points ago

This is what should have been posted.

[–]Zhang5 1 point2 points ago

I'm guessing OP found it as a gif on /r/creepy and didn't know what it was from and was too lazy to figure it out or assumed it was just the gif.

[–]_godiva_ 37 points38 points ago

Back in my 8th grade french class we were required to translate an English poem or short story into French. I chose this Edward Gorey poem (which, by the way, is titled The Gashlycrumb Tinies). Much like Reddit, no one in my school faculty was familiar with Edward Gorey, and I ended up labeled disturbed and antisocial, and recommended for counseling.

tl;dr I was the only one in my school who actually read books, and that means I need therapy.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

I hoped you learned something from that.

[–]_godiva_ 7 points8 points ago

Yes. Do not send my kids to public school, for they will be weird and I do not want them learning that this is a bad thing.

[–]Agehn 1 point2 points ago

Or make sure to send your kids to a good public school. Maybe even get on the school board or something and make sure shit like that doesn't happen.

[–]ThirdFloorGreg 2 points3 points ago

Did you translate ennui correctly?

[–]derekwtg 15 points16 points ago

I thought Edward Gorey was fairly common knowledge too... shrug

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

People here probably think this art style started on The Simpsons with "Dark Stanley"

[–]CelebornX 3 points4 points ago

People always say this whenever an Edward Gorey piece pops up here.

But his stuff makes everyone say "WTF" and in the schocked and appalled way, too, not the "Bag of almonds labeled cashews" way.

I think it's perfectly acceptable for this subreddit.

Just because he's popular for creating darkly humorous material doesn't mean that it doesn't belong here.

[–]Daveyd325 4 points5 points ago

I have never even heard of Edward Gorey.

[–]tardisrider613 9 points10 points ago

Well, then don't just sit there--you have some googling to do.

[–]theheartofgold 8 points9 points ago

I went to Edward Gorey's house on Cape Cod, which has been turned into a museum. It was pretty much exactly what you'd expect his house to look like. A friend of his (who I suspect was probably his lover) gave a lovely tour with a lot of little personal details.

I recommend it if you're ever in MA or on the Cape.

[–]Rat_Bastard 1 point2 points ago

He has the most appropriate surname.

[–]yukinolove 1 point2 points ago

I was gonna post that myself :)

[–]superpandagirl 1 point2 points ago

I have copies of all of his work :)

[–]thjasse 108 points109 points ago

Apparently I read slow.

[–]Bainemo 27 points28 points ago

I've always been an above average reader and this was just about at my maximum near the end when the sentences got longer and the frames got shorter

[–]rustyderps 16 points17 points ago

You could either read the slide or look at the picture there wasn't really room for both

[–]tha22 10 points11 points ago

Reading it as a poem helps a lot.

[–]ostermei 2 points3 points ago

If you're using Chrome, this may be helpful.

[–]cookiewalla 1 point2 points ago

I like you

[–]POULTRY_PLACENTA 1 point2 points ago

Just pause it, bro.

[–]Zeroman64 52 points53 points ago

Different, but in song!

[–]Blue_ODaniel 23 points24 points ago

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who listens to Creature Feature

[–]Acid-Trip 5 points6 points ago

I was hoping that's what the link was.

[–]HuckleZin 6 points7 points ago

Thank you for taking the time to post this, because I was just gonna stare till someone did. stares

[–]HuckleZin 4 points5 points ago

Also, I totally sang the gif.

[–]Mr_Mimiseku 3 points4 points ago

That is catchy as fuck. I love it.

[–]PeaWillow 2 points3 points ago

Read by a three year old.

[–]Rubri180 1 point2 points ago

I came here to post this, and I am glad you are awesome. Just gotta say that, yep

[–]badmanbadii7 1 point2 points ago

Came looking for Creature Feature post very impressed.

[–]probably-maybe 19 points20 points ago

Edward Gorey. I've got the cover of this book tattooed on my bicep.

[–]scorpio_on_blue_moon 8 points9 points ago

A little more convenient look !!

[–]TheDoubtfulGuest 8 points9 points ago

Fun fact: my reddit name is an Edward Gorey story. Have a tattoo of the little guy on my right forearm.

[–]componentfield 1 point2 points ago

it's so rare that i notice reddit usernames, but sometimes they're worth the look.

[–]jenniferwhateves 17 points18 points ago

Maybe not WTF worthy, but I like it.

[–]Hbomb1285 3 points4 points ago

Love it whats ennui?

[–]waterboy1321 9 points10 points ago

Ennui is excessive boredom

[–]_jamil_ 17 points18 points ago

usually combined with existential despair.

[–]sty1emonger 11 points12 points ago

and/or reddit.

[–]ThirdFloorGreg 1 point2 points ago

In french it just means boredom, but in English its a bit harder to explain. Boredom is an aspect, but it's combined with a sort of introspective unease. Basically, it's the emotion that goes with that particular sigh I have no idea how to represent with text. If you get it you'll know what I'm talking about. Interestingly, there is a French word for the same thing, but they stole it from English: "le spleen."

[–]Hpac 25 points26 points ago

As a kid, I had a poster with all these in my room. It always made me giggle a little. I suppose I should see a shrink.

[–]zopilote15 8 points9 points ago

One of my old high school English teachers had this in his room. He was my favorite.

[–]componentfield 2 points3 points ago

hardly odd. gorey's pretty normal.

[–]killmatos 15 points16 points ago

Y is for Yorick, the last man on earth

[–]YouSmellLikeBurning 13 points14 points ago

You will remember Yorick Mori.

[–]caepha 10 points11 points ago

Don't worry about zilean either. He probably used his ulty.

[–]jeevaschan 4 points5 points ago

one by one we bite the dust

we kick the bucket and begin to rust

give up the torch when the number's up

we all fall down

ashes to ashes bones to paste

you'll wither away in your resting place

eternity in a wooden case we all fall down

[–]Maxwell_House 4 points5 points ago

A few of those really remind me of the way some children die in "The Woman in Black."

[–]MusicMagi 2 points3 points ago

Amphigory!

[–]Saefer 2 points3 points ago

Reminds me of this short scene from Humanity Has Declined.

[–]whatever_it_is 2 points3 points ago

Zillah went out like a rock star.

[–]iHaveBadIdeas 2 points3 points ago

Well, now we know where George R.R. Martin learned his letters

[–]disrespectful 9 points10 points ago

I had to look up ennui

[–]fjorkyna 7 points8 points ago

I got excited when I saw that word in the gif. It's one of my favorites!

[–]dr_wang 3 points4 points ago

in this context it means boredom.

[–]randy9876 2 points3 points ago

Ah yes, I have always identified with the unfortunate Neville.

[–]hotdishgirl 1 point2 points ago

Glad I'm not the only one!

[–]rmhawesome 1 point2 points ago

Describes most redditors pretty well actually

[–]Aiyon 5 points6 points ago

F made me chuckle. Fanny was sucked dry. :P

[–]specialvillain 2 points3 points ago

How has nobody mentioned Mr. David Lynch yet?

[–]KingKitteh 1 point2 points ago

My eyebrows raised, that makes it's worthy in my opinion.

[–]namegoeswhere 1 point2 points ago

Edward Gorey gave me nightmares as a child. Mostly because my name is one of those. But now I keep it on rotation for facebook profile pictures.

[–]joshc643 1 point2 points ago

my brother had this calendar. funny that i keep seeing these pics lately

[–]Dhorton2003 1 point2 points ago

And then there were none.

[–]LiamtheFilmMajor 1 point2 points ago

We used to have this as a book when I was little and then this mothers day I got my mom a set of cool tarot cards drawn by Edward Gorey. What a strange guy.

[–]Groggiebear 1 point2 points ago

My biology teacher, who I had in 9th grade and then again for AP Biology in 12th, had this poster in her classroom. Anytime administration wanted it taken down, she'd use the power of TENURE on them to keep it up.

[–]AREYOUSauRuS 1 point2 points ago

Yorick got his head knocked in.... finally.

[–]DatKass 1 point2 points ago

About fucking time Yorick dies.

[–]gnosticlava 1 point2 points ago

This is not wtf, this is Edward Gorey.

[–]TheOnlyAlex 1 point2 points ago

Did "K" make anyone else laugh?

[–]poopypony 1 point2 points ago

LOVE Edward Gorey. So not WTF material.

[–]Grumblepuffs 1 point2 points ago

[–][deleted] ago

[–]Bryceybryce 1 point2 points ago

I like the guy who died of ennui.

[–]reddit_poster_anon 1 point2 points ago

Definitely read "U" as "Ooh is for Una".

[–]laylaylena 1 point2 points ago

I've been to the Edward Gorey house! I had more fun than I'd like to admit...

[–]violetcandies 1 point2 points ago

I gave my husband this book for our first valentine's day.

[–]SaebraK 1 point2 points ago

Love this book, it's twisted and adorable.

[–]NovaKitFoX 1 point2 points ago

[–]majorkick 1 point2 points ago

[–]Protagoris 1 point2 points ago

"Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him, Horatio;"

[–]Silvercumulus 1 point2 points ago

Drunk at a party couple weeks ago, someone had a bottle of Crystal Head Vodka. My friend drunkenly held it and said, "Alas, poor Yorick. I knew him. He was hung."

[–]mbrown9412 1 point2 points ago

I own this! It's in a book called Amphigory with several other strange stories.

[–]boggart777 3 points4 points ago

"the gahstly crumb tinies"

[–]LittleDuckie 1 point2 points ago

Main thing I noticed was that a lot of the names are characters in League of Legends. Zilean, Yorick, Victor, even Susan! I think i've been playing too much..

[–]Bainemo 1 point2 points ago

Z is for zillah, not zilean

[–]allthosefeels 0 points1 point ago

I remember reading this book out loud one time at a party when we were hanging out in my friend's sister's art studio. good times.

[–]cochice 0 points1 point ago

My buddy and I found this in a book store when we were 10. I just sat there wondering what the word was that I was looking for. I now know that word or words i should say...what the fuck.

[–]Venomousx 0 points1 point ago

Made me laugh ; Maybe I should get the book people keep mentioning

[–]eliguy666 0 points1 point ago

Not at all creepy, my English teacher had it up last year and it was great!

[–]AdelineLee 0 points1 point ago

Dude. Edward Gorey is the shit. This is how I remembered the letter s as a kid.

[–]meowfacekillah 0 points1 point ago

I have this poster in my bathroom! Was thinnking of taking it down before my kid can read it...

[–]Eindys 0 points1 point ago

I love it.

[–]QuiteUnoriginal 0 points1 point ago

Poor Fanny. Being sucked dry by a leech would most definitely be uncomfortable.

[–]KermAmrek 0 points1 point ago

I've always had this around my house ever since I can remember. It's this giant framed picture that's moved from the living room to the kitchen and finally to my room. The story goes that when my mom bought it the lady she was buying it from asked "So where's it going?" And my mom replied telling her it was going in the kitchen. "So you're a single couple then?" "No, we have 2 5 year olds" the lady proceeded to shit herself.

Also my favourite is the one with the axe.

[–]TheBiles 0 points1 point ago

Score! They used my name for one of them.

[–]Norune 0 points1 point ago

B is for the blood she lost. C is for the corpse she left

[–]Stickygod 0 points1 point ago

I wouldn't be able to decide what would be the less painful death.

[–]rageaboutsugar 0 points1 point ago

C is for creepy

[–]HiggsBussum 0 points1 point ago

And B is for Benny who lost all his hair.

[–]paby 0 points1 point ago

Had the pleasure of meeting him and getting a book signed before he died. He also lived right up the street from me.

[–]Froggiefied 0 points1 point ago

Oohoo, so this is what the jeromes dream tour poster was based on, J is for jerome, who was killed by his dream

[–]pteek 0 points1 point ago

WE CALL UPON YOU, YOURMUSICALCOMMENTS!

[–]anonymous92 0 points1 point ago

Goes way too fast, needs to be slowed down. I either get to look at the image or read the text, but not enough time for both.

[–]mertzlufft 0 points1 point ago

This is similar to a song by Creature Feature. I think it's the Alphabet Obituaries or something.

[–]sydazlir 0 points1 point ago

I had a framed picture of that entire thing up on the wall of my house. I couldn't understand why my parents left it there, scared the hell out of me every time I walked past it.

[–]rocketshipray 0 points1 point ago

I was on the Debate & Forensics team in high school and we had to participate in one category besides debate. I chose to participate in Poetry. We received extra points for visual representation of the piece we performed. I recited "The Gashleycrumb Tinies" and "The Utter Zoo" while in dark Victorian-style dress. It was the first time I received 1st place in anything (I had been runner-up in a few Math & Science competitions, but no blue ribbons.) and the only thing that I received awards in in high school, being completely pathetic at most sports and only okay at others.

[–]Bigernoi 0 points1 point ago

My friends mother has this hanging up in her guest bathroom.

[–]OneCello 0 points1 point ago

You know I had something to say but I forgot while I was reading all the pictures.
