ಠ_ಠ

I hope everyone knows it's pronounced "sah-key"

[–]yipeskop 4 points5 points ago

I hope you know it's actually pronounced "sah-kay"...

In Japanese, it's spelled "さけ", not "さき".

You know, when I posted this I spent a good thirty seconds debating how I'd write it out. My decision was made when I looked at wikipedia and it said /ˈsɑːki/ and dictionary.com clearly pronounces it -kee. So, I don't know if that's an americanized pronunciation or what, but it is not only an accepted pronunciation, but it's the most common and prevalent pronunciation in english.

So, thanks for the downvotes guys, you're wrong. My point though, is either way is a million times better than pronouncing it "sake" (rhymes with rake), which people actually do that.. Yeah, people actually pronounce it like that.

Really, I just hated your completely smug attitude so I thought I'd return the favor all the while pointing out your incorrect notions about natural languages, as you yourself demonstrated again in your last post.

You say

but [sɑːki is] an accepted pronunciation

despite it not being technically correct, but then chide those who decide to yet again pronounce it in a different way.

My point though, is either way is a million times better than pronouncing it "sake" (rhymes with rake), which people actually do that.. Yeah, people actually pronounce it like that.

The whole thing about natural languages like English is that they CHANGE and that there is no such thing "correct" pronunciations. If you haven't noticed by now pronunciations vary TREMENDOUSLY and you only make yourself look like an ass when you "correct" someone's pronunciation.

tl;dr - lol. You yourself admit that "sah-key" is an incorrect americanized pronunciation, but then chide those who pronounce it "sayk".

[–]pseudolobster 0 points1 point ago

"sah-key" is the accepted americanized pronunciation. It's not an "incorrect americanized pronunciation", it is what everyone agrees is the most common and understood pronunciation.

Just because it's americanized doesn't mean it's incorrect. All languages adopt words from other languages. The japanese word for computer is "computer", but if you were in Japan, that would be considered an incorrect pronunciation. The correct word is "kon-pyu-ta". It started out as an English word, but is now a Japanese word with different pronunciation. Likewise if you went to japan and started pronouncing it "carpenter", you would be just plain wrong, and no one would understand you.

Both "sah-kay" and "sah-key" are correct, established, legitimate pronunciations. They are listed in dictionaries and are accepted as correct by scholars. "sayk" is just plain wrong, and more people should know that they look foolish if they pronounce it like that, and no one will understand you.

[–]yipeskop 0 points1 point ago

lol. I like how you use the example of "kon-pyu-ta", when "kom-pyu-ta", "ko-mu-pyu-ta", "ko-pyu-ta", "kon-pu-ta", and "kom-pu-ta" are also commonly used pronunciations. Plus, saying "computer" like a normal English speaker, isn't by any means considered "incorrect" in Japan. Quit pulling crap out of your ass. What's next, are you going to say saying "Maghreb" with the guttural sound native Arab speakers do would be incorrect in the US?

Also, you have it backwards. Linguists don't by any means establish what is correct, they study what people tend to accept as correct. Dictionaries aren't rulebooks just so you know. In any case, I just wanted to mock your unnecessary smugness so I'm done.

[–]pseudolobster 0 points1 point ago

At this point I have to wonder if you're trying to troll me. I'm of course I'm not trying to be smug, I'm just saying "sah-key" and "sah-kay" are both established, understandable, correct pronunciations, but if you say "say'k", rhymes with cake, absolutely no one will know what you're talking about. That's not how it's pronounced, in the same way that コンピュータ is not pronounced "carpenter".

[–]Ragnalypse 0 points1 point ago

Sah-kay would get the point across more accurately, since we don't actually use the arrangement "kei."
