Just because there seems to be some confusion in these comments, I thought I would try and clear a few things up. IMAX refers to a lot of different theater experiences. It originally referred to 70mm film projected onto an enormous purpose-built screen. The company now refers to these as IMAX Classic theaters.

A little later, several IMAX Dome theaters were built, in which 70mm film is projected onto an enormous dome-shaped screen. Most of these are found in museums and are used to show science related content in addition to occasional Hollywood features. This is the experience to which the OP is referring.

Around 2008, the IMAX company started retrofitting the largest theaters in multiplexes with slightly larger screens and high definition digital projectors (the newest of which can do 4k). These retrofitted theaters are also IMAX theatres, even though the screen is usually less than half the size of a purpose-built screen and the digital projector can't display anything close to the resolution of 70mm film. The tickets for all three are about the same price and the IMAX company refuses to acknowledge that some IMAX experiences are clearly superior to others.

Most people think that, while novel, the dome theaters aren't the best way to see a movie because of the effect that the OP is complaining about. I have never seen a movie in a dome theater, so I can' say from personal experience. However, I can say that, for me, the difference between retrofitted, digital IMAX theaters and purpose-built film IMAX theaters is night and day. The retrofitted theaters seem very similar to normal theaters, while the purpose-built screens seem absolutely enormous. I saw TDKR at one of these theaters and it was probably the greatest cinematic experience of my life, even though it was far from my favorite movie.

Here is a list of IMAX theaters in the US: www.lfexaminer.com/theaUSA.htm

The ones that say 1570 under "format" are the ones with real film IMAX projectors.

[–]a_can_of_solo 9 points10 points ago

I saw it at the sydney IMAX, which last time I checked was one of the biggest screens in the world, it was epic but it was hard to keep track of people in close ups

[–]HiaItsPeter 5 points6 points ago

Same problem in transformers. I couldn't tell what the hell was happening because i had to look everywhere. I think it was in a space museum in Mobile, Alabama. Huge screen.

[–]gech 11 points12 points ago

Thats because transformers is a visual clusterfuck. And a shitty movie.

[–]uapyro 1 point2 points ago

That'd be Huntsville, AL instead of Mobile. And the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

I saw Star Trek there; it wasn't "too" bad, but I got there really early so I got the top row or so, center where the best view is.

[–]Danielrh9 0 points1 point ago

I saw Dark Knight Rises last weekend on that screen here in Huntsville. It was passable. It's a fun IMAX experience, but if you sit anywhere except the very back row you're going to have to go see a chiropractor the next day.

[–]xccxxx 3 points4 points ago

I saw The Dark Knight Rises at IMAX Sydney (1570 Proper IMAX, FLAT (Non Dome) largest screen in the world), and while I loved the movie I was very disappointed with the quality of the presentation. The scenes actually filmed in proper IMAX that filled the entire screen were fantastic, excellent clarity and truly breathtaking. Unfortunately, the 'normal' upconverted non IMAX scenes looked pretty murky and terrible. Was akin to watching a Standard Definition DVD or File on a projector or large HDTV, it really felt like the resolution wasn't there to justify the size of the screen. There are some threads on IMDB with people having similar problems, I actually wish I had of skipped IMAX and just saw it at a regular theatre.

[–]a_can_of_solo 1 point2 points ago

most of the big action beats in DKR were Imax, probly a total of an hour of footage I've read, so not too bad, I didn't mind the regular footage really.

[–]Zorbick 0 points1 point ago

I saw it in a regular theater first, then saw it again on a 70mm film IMAX last night. Even the scenes that were cropped and lower quality were still better, IMO. The switching back and forth with the bars and completely full threw me off a few times, though, so that did sort of lessen the experience.

The sound is what got me the most, though. It really added to the experience, which is something I wasn't expecting.

[–]Dr_Godzilla 0 points1 point ago

We have one of the large dome IMAX theaters here and during close action sequences it is terrible to try to keep track of anything on it. It is interesting to see a movie SO GIGANTIC though.

[–]havox07 2 points3 points ago

What about if it says 1570+DIG is that digital with the large screens?

[–]Gibybo 1 point2 points ago

That probably means the theater is capable of showing both digital and classic IMAX, since 1570 likely refers to 15 perf, 70mm IMAX film. If it's capable of showing 15/70 film, then it is an IMAX Classic theater. It may also have a digital projector aimed at the same screen so that they can show movies that aren't available in that film format (it will be lower quality).

EDIT: This site: http://diaramble.com/Post/IMAX/171/Do-not-fall-for-lieMAX-The-fake-IMAX claims that the theaters listed as 1570+DIG are not in fact IMAX Classic theaters.

[–]bret_with_1_t 2 points3 points ago

Purpose built 70mm IMAX theaters are the only true IMAX locations in my opinion. All the digital retrofits was just a sad way for IMAX to make money off of their brand name. I like to call the retrofits "IMAX Lite."

[–]yev001 1 point2 points ago

I saw the last harry potter in IMAX London. It is a purpose build screen.

However, I did not like the experience at all. Not because the film was bad (was a pretty good film), but because the screen was bad.

Not just because of the size, but because of 3D. Previously I saw the 300 there at it was not nearly as bad as a 3D film!

The screen appears too big to offer proper 3D experience IMO. The edges do not recombine properly so you end up looking at a round spot in your field of view where things are 3D, but completely separated around the edges.

Was that because the film used some kind of old 3D technology or is it just a general weak point of huge screens? If it's the same with Batman I'd rather watch it on a regular screen.

[–]brycedriesenga 11 points12 points ago

Well, Batman isn't in 3D anywhere, so no worries there.

[–]anaxos 1 point2 points ago

I saw Tron: Legacy in the London IMAX in 3D and it had to be the best 3D film I've ever seen and I still don't like most 3D films, the only exceptions that I've seen are Tron and Avatar so it's really down to how the film is shot.

(And goddamn did that Daft Punk soundtrack sound good in the IMAX)

[–]sc8132217174 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for this. I saw The Dark Knight in IMAX since I remembered the IMAX science dome I went to for a school trip being pretty amazing. I ended up getting into the theater completely confused as to how it was any different from a regular movie. The screen appeared to be slightly bigger than usual, but it was slightly disappointing that I ended up paying 8 dollars extra for something I could barely notice. They really ought to have different names, brands, something to let people know what they're getting in to.

[–]mcnultysbluecavalier 1 point2 points ago

Liberty science center in NJ is a dome and marked 1570...guess I know what I'm doing today.

[–]Funkit 1 point2 points ago

I LOVED getting high with my now ex (who lived in JC) and going there. Nothing beats getting stoned and flying through the Grand Canyon, holy shit.

[–]opaeoinadi 0 points1 point ago

So... Seattle's Pacific Science Center viewing. My first experience with (real?) Imax.. I'll say the giant-o-screen did not pop my cherry like I'd've wished. I did think about some silly meme post, like the kids do these days ("this movie was too damned big/loud!"), but I'll just comment here instead. It was TOO DAMN BIG AND LOUD.

According to your list, the imax I saw was under the "legit" section, but it felt like an old-school laptop, that I didn't have the "right" spot to view the film correctly; it had those spots in the corners that were dark and the whole picture just seemed.... not as good. Also, did I mention the picture was too damned big? It was the first movie I've seen since Avatar, which I saw in the chintzy imax/3d hoo-ra, and was a bit let-down (after spending $18 for a single ticket. Atleast they didn't strip-search me for my 6-pack.).

[–]arepeegee 0 points1 point ago

I saw it at there too, the key is to sit as far back as you can. That way, the entire screen is on your field of view and you don't get blasted (as much) by the audio.

[–]uhhwhatname 0 points1 point ago

I wish there was a closer real IMAX theatre the last time I saw a movie on the big screen was superman returns. Looks great and from a few of my friends they prefer the retro fitted imax's because of the the slightly better sound but of course nothing bears the real IMAX screens. I just chose the retro fits due to Convience and not wanting to drive nearly an hour.

[–]stvemp 0 points1 point ago

Finally living in AZ pays off! Harkins 1570 for the win!

[–]jjustice 0 points1 point ago

I saw it at the Regal Colorado Center 9 in real 1570 film. The entire movie was blurry, dim, flickery and there was no bass. I could understand Bane, though.

[–]nSquib 0 points1 point ago

To call IMAX "70mm film projected onto an enormous purpose-built/dome-shaped screen" is a bit of a misnomer. True IMAX is a large format horizontal variant on 70mm film, which is three times larger than regular 70mm film (which is what films like Lawrence of Arabia and The Sound of Music were filmed on; remember that old school "Panavision" stuff? 70mm). Here's a visual depiction of the difference (and of the difference between real IMAX and Liemax as well): http://thepixelpulse.com/2011/12/what-is-an-imax-experience-and-why-should-you-care/

The Dark Knight Rises was filmed in IMAX, regular 70mm, and 35mm and you can see the difference if you pay attention to when the letterboxes appear. I made a point of seeing it at a real IMAX in a good seat (middle back so that the edges aren't distorted and you aren't constantly moving your head to see the entire image) and it blew my mind. Absolutely the only way to see any film with significant parts filmed in IMAX.

[–]alle0441 0 points1 point ago

I've seen "science" shows at the dome theater before. It's a cool novelty, but there's no way you can really appreciate a hollywood motion picture on it. Mostly because there's no way to see the entire screen at once! There could be an entire event going on at 10 o'clock, but you're still looking at 2 o'clock!

[–]bustanutbar 0 points1 point ago

I'd like to point out that some new cinemas have purpose built IMAX Experience Theaters as well. In the town that I am in, this happens to be the case.

No one believes me that they are paying much more money for was is essentially a larger screen and louder speakers.

[–]thiiiiisguy987 0 points1 point ago

So if my theater is listed as just being "digital" is it not really worth it?

[–]be81827 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for sending this. I just saw TDK in the Westbury location and it's BS to call it IMAX, I mean it's a good sized screen but it's NOT IMAX and to call it that and charge prices like the REAL screens is ridiculous. Now I know better.

[–]dreadredheadzedsdead 28 points29 points ago

The correct term is Omnimax.

[–]phrankygee 4 points5 points ago

Wow. Had to scroll write a ways to find the first mention of the word "omnimax".

I was starting to question whether I was right, but that has been my assumption all along. The 180° half-dome screens typically go by the name "Omnimax", whereas the 50-70 foot tall, slightly curved, perforated screens of amazingness use the "IMAX" name.

Am I wrong? Is my info out of date?

[–]kgmoome 1 point2 points ago

i don't believe you are wrong

[–]PhrackSipsin 0 points1 point ago

You're slightly wrong. See comment above.

[–]contra31 3 points4 points ago

Imax officially renamed Omnimax to Imax Dome.

Shitty seat. Gotta get there early or go see it the second week out.

[–]losingxsleep 109 points110 points ago

I saw it midnight in IMAX Dome and I shat bricks. I laughed, I cried, I cried harder, then I cried like a little girl. About 2 hours before the show started they sat us down and the manager of the theater walked in a told us that the theater we saw it in was one of 15 in the nation that showed the movie in the state that Christopher Nolan had intended and requested: imax film (not digital). They handed out free movie posters with Bane's face on them that said IMAX 12:01. We proceeded to have about 30 workers BRING us food to buy upon request and escort us to the bathroom to ensure we kept our seat. I have never felt more privileged in my life.

[–]OneCello 52 points53 points ago

Wait. WHAT?

[–]eifersucht12a 3 points4 points ago

That's not a spoiler, it's a basic element of the plot.

"Batman is going to have a run in with a jewel thief"

"WOAH BUDDY SPOILER TAG THAT SHIT"

[–]Zorbick 0 points1 point ago

Why is this such a funny thing?

[–]Foxsbiscuits 0 points1 point ago

I laughed during this part of the film.

[–]KyngGeorge 0 points1 point ago

I swear, it had to have been a nod to TDK and the hundreds of "Where are they" parodies. He just screams it five? times in a row.

[–]cynicalMIND 5 points6 points ago

I dont know about losingxsleep, but there are several such IMAX theaters in VA and DC. There's one at the Smithsonian National Air and Space museum. Also one located at the Udvar-Hazy Center I believe.

[–]gobias 1 point2 points ago

Udvar-Hazy is not a dome. I saw Amazing Spider-Man there and was fairly disappointed. It wasn't much bigger than the Tyson's Corner IMAX, but you are forced to sit pretty close since the theater is small.

[–]dangerous_beans 0 points1 point ago

I found that Air and Space seldom shows any first run movies. I usually end up going to the big theatre in Alexandria (or Arlington, can't remember) that has an Imax dome.

[–]IEatRosaryBeads 0 points1 point ago

Hoffman 22?

[–]pureeviljester 0 points1 point ago

Are these dome and is it a good experience? There seems to be no majority on which is better, dome or not dome.

[–]kujo777 2 points3 points ago

Wherever it is, it will be my future home.

[–]ilostmyfirstuser 1 point2 points ago

I'm guessing Bay Area. I say the midnight premiere at the Tech Museum's IMAX Dome and got a Bane poster. Drove back about 5 hrs from University for my eyes to melt from the awesomeness.

[–]HappyGoGinger 0 points1 point ago

I think OP saw it in Tampa, FL. I think it's the only dome IMAX in the state that shows feature films.

[–]losingxsleep 0 points1 point ago

Here is the link to all the theaters showing the movie in actual film.

Upon looking this up I found out that the number of IMAX true film theaters is 65. The man lied to us! Though I feel a little less special, but it still is a very exclusive club. I saw it at the Tech Museum Hackworth IMAX, San Jose.

I later saw it in Regal Hacienda Crossings Imax, Dublin (San Francisco) and preferred it over the dome experience.

[–]megatom0 90 points91 points ago

True Nolan wanted it shown on IMAX film BUT NOT A FUCKING DOME. Domes distort the fuck out of the picture, and ruing the image. The domes are also bigger than a persons field of vision, which means that like this gif says you have to look around to see the entire picture. Whatever you fucking do, do not see TDKR in a goddamn dome. I saw TDK in the Charlotte Discovery Place IMAX dome. NEVER GO THERE. It was one of the worst movie going experiences of my life. The image is distorted. They make you file into the seats so if you are the first in line you get stuck in the back left corner. I got there 2 hours early just to be stuck in the shittiest section of the theater.

The reason they give you this "treatment" is because the theaters are actually too small to move in comfortably. They don't want people getting up to get snacks because there is little to no room to move in the theater the way the seating is designed. It isn't because of "privileged" treatment. Lastly I want to stress this enough. TDKR was not filmed for domes it was filmed on IMAX film, which there are much more than 15 IMAX film theaters in the US. There are probably only like 15 dome theaters because no one films for the domes any more as they are horrible to watch not to mention the inherent seating issue that most had built into them. DO NOT SEE THIS FILM IN A FUCKING DOME.

[–]thejesse 80 points81 points ago

on the other hand, if you're just seeing a documentary on the grand canyon or something, PLEASE GO SEE IT IN A FUCKING DOME YOU WILL FEEL LIKE YOU ARE FUCKING FLYING.

[–]dangerous_beans 21 points22 points ago

The domes really are best for nature films. Regular movies, not so much.

[–]GoldwaterAndTea 9 points10 points ago

This makes sense, considering that they were designed to showcase documentaries.

[–]initforthefreeroll 4 points5 points ago

I really enjoyed the my local omnimax when it was still open and mostly agree it was great for those short documentaries. The Magic Of Flight a film where you ride along in the cock pit of a blue angels jet was absolutely insane, the dome really made you feel like you were flying. I also watched Charlie And The Chocolate Factory 2005 in the dome when they were trying real movies out, it was a cool experience closest I ever came to throwing up watching a movie because of the boat scene so yeah don't make your first viewing of TDKR or any other full featured movie in the dome but do check it out after its a unique experience.

[–]Mustangarrett 1 point2 points ago

It must be infuriating to be one of the original designers of these things. So people have completely misused my design and are disappointed with the results? Fuck me right?!

[–]BosonTheClown 1 point2 points ago

Cosmic Voyage in a dome is a freaking awesome experience.

[–]mottom24 1 point2 points ago

I saw Star Trek in the dome theater at the Franklin Institute in Philly... Worst mistake of my life! (or that week... whatever). The amount of close ups, shaky cam and lens flare made me so nauseous that I had to leave 30 minutes in. The opening space battle was enough to make a seasoned sea captain sick to his stomach.

[–]salaryprotection 3 points4 points ago

Went to the IMAX dome in San Jose, CA. Let's just say my neck hurt.

[–]GrizzlyAdams90 1 point2 points ago

I got that poster also at mine. I just got it framed tonight. Too bad they made it a really weird size, was a pain to find a frame for it.

[–]lionheartednyhc 1 point2 points ago

Was the entire movie shot in IMAX this time? If I remember, TDK had only like 20 minutes of IMAX.

[–]sixtyfivedays 0 points1 point ago

It's something like an hour or so of footage this time. I'm guessing every action scene.

[–]lionheartednyhc 0 points1 point ago

Awesome. I just saw it in IMAX and it was in incredible.

[–]megatom0 0 points1 point ago

I'd say over 1/3 of the movie is so almost a full hour's worth of IMAX material. All the shots are breathtaking though and just amazing.

[–]EONS 0 points1 point ago

72 minutes

[–]someones1 1 point2 points ago

I second this opinion. Don't see any real movie on an IMAX dome. I saw one of the Transformers movies on the dome and I honestly had no clue what was happening at any time due to the distortion. It was awful.

[–]PhoenixKnight 1 point2 points ago

I saw Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in an Omnimax theater. When the movie was over, I walked out of the theater feeling very disoriented with a pounding headache. Never again.

[–]beertastic 1 point2 points ago

I saw batman begins in that same theater, and I also believe it was one of the worst movie going experiences I have ever had.

Luckily I had already seen the movie before.

[–]cityofcharlotte 1 point2 points ago

THANK GOD for your comment! I was about to hit up discovery place for tix after my lunch break.

[–]linlorienelen 1 point2 points ago

I saw it at the Cinerama Dome, which is obviously not an IMAX dome, but looked great from our center seats. I'm not sure where I'm going with this. I have no input on IMAX domes.

[–]wewd 1 point2 points ago

The Cinerama Dome has a horizontally curved screen, not a hemispherical screen like IMAX/OMNIMAX domes do. Completely different type of screen, and only movies shot with a spherical lens should be shown on OMNIMAX screens, otherwise there's going to be considerable distortion.

[–]linlorienelen 0 points1 point ago

Aha. I guess I've never seen an OMNIMAX screen. Thanks.

[–]ErikFitz 1 point2 points ago

I went to see TDKR in the Discovery Place dome earlier today-- while I can attest to the fact that the dome seriously distorts the picture, I still enjoyed how surrounded I felt by the image. The aerial landscape shots are particularly intense. However, I only enjoyed it as much as I did because I've already seen the film. Had this been the first time I saw it, I wouldn't have known what the hell was going on during some of the action scenes.

They didn't do assigned seating when I went to see it, nor when I saw TDK back in 2008. Not sure why they did that with your screening. But yeah, the seating in there sucks. The worst part is having to crane your neck back to see the entire picture.

[–]Zugly 0 points1 point ago

Hey! I went there too last Tuesday. Got their early (for the movie) just to fuck around in the museum, god-damn are children's science toys fun.

[–]Agaggleofmeese 0 points1 point ago

I thought the dome in Charlotte @ Discovery Place had stopped showing feature films.

Edit: just checked and they are showing it. Might have to disregard the advice though. Saw the second Matrix film on a dome & it was glorious.

[–]sean_themighty[!] 16 points17 points ago

I genuinely don't believe it was designed to be seen on a dome, but I know it's supposed to be on REAL IMAX projectors, not these hack dual 2K digital ones popping up all over the place. Fun fact, IMAX is going to be mandating an update to 4K next year.

To be fair, I saw it in a "LIeMAX" theater and it was still great and worth the extra $2. In Indianapolis we do have the Indiana State Museum's IMAX which is the real deal. It has a 70-foot screen with the balls-to-the-walls real film projector... the one that actually ascends 40 feet from the reel to the shooting window. I may have to see it again there.

[–]RossIRL 2 points3 points ago

I saw TDK in regular theater then LieMax on the south side and was blown away. I saw other Avatar as well there and was still blown away. Other films were not good.

I saw TDKR at the State Museum and while it looked good, it didn't blow me away. I think it's the shots that he choose this time. Also it didn't seem as loud as when i saw TDK in the LieMax.

One thing is that the seats didn't seem as steep as i remember. Oh well i was super excited when i saw the movie and loved it.

[–]uhhwhatname 0 points1 point ago

Yea I first saw TDKR on a regular digital screen (lieMAX is sold out also real IMAX theatres are nearly an hour away from me) so just I just wanted to see it. It looked fine but the sound was lacking a bit especially when bane was talking. But then watched it in Liemax and enjoyed the movie visually and sound. And I understood bane's lines too vs a regular theatre showing.

[–]Raoc3 0 points1 point ago

Are you me?

I saw TDK in regular theater then LieMax on the south side and was blown away. I saw other Avatar as well there and was still blown away. Other films were not good. I saw TDKR at the State Museum and while it looked good, it didn't blow me away. I think it's the shots that he choose this time. Also it didn't seem as loud as when i saw TDK in the LieMax. All of this is exactly what I was thinking.

[–]RossIRL 0 points1 point ago

I wish i could see the Dark Knight at the State Museum and see if its them or just nolan.

I watched TDKR again this past weekend, this time at a Digital LieMAX (not in Indy) and the sound was noticeably and dramatically louder in the digital. I'm guessing that the ISM screen is set up better for documentaries than action movies. I also noticed the ISM had a distinctive ceiling setup which would appear to dampen sound better.

[–]PedroElOzo 0 points1 point ago

I thought the video quality looked kind of shitty, I saw it in IMAX in San Antonio and was like wtf it's just too big too look at all at once, that's all...

[–]sean_themighty[!] 3 points4 points ago

As strict as IMAX is with their theaters... some do suffer from this issue of viewing distance in relation to screen size. At my local LIeMAX screen, I find that if I sit in the back row of the front section (where the wheel-chair openings are), it's freaking fantastic. Any further forward and you're too low and action scenes are extremely difficult to follow. Any further back, and it's not an IMAX experience. The screen is too far. Thus, I have to get there very early to be first in line.

As far as video quality goes, I thought it looked stellar. If you didn't think the IMAX scenes were sharp, I'd complain to your management. I saw MI4: Ghost Protocol and the ENTIRE movie was very slightly blurry. I complained to management and he confirmed that one of the two projectors had a broken footing from the installation the day before, and they were misaligned. They knew they were providing an inferior movie experience and didn't offer to correct it (offer refund or movie pass or even an apology) for us.

I called IMAX and complained that one of their theaters was violating their standards.

I actually very much enjoy LieMAX as long as I get the right seats.

[–]RiseoftheAnimals 7 points8 points ago

While I applaud you for taking the time to see the movie on an actual 15/70 print, there are way more than 15 IMAX theaters in the U.S. screening this on film. http://www.lfexaminer.com/DarkKnightRisesOn1570.htm

[–]Kuusou 0 points1 point ago

Well we don't have a dome where I live, that I know of, but even at normal screen midnight shows, they bring food for us to buy, right into the room. They do it a little better for imax, but still, it's the same thing.

I would love to check out that done shit though, sounds really fun.

[–]Viamonte 0 points1 point ago

I saw the midnight premiere in Imax and got posters and stickers as well. I saw it in Tigard, OR (Bridgeport Theatre to be exact) Did yours look anything like these?

EDIT: I accidently a word.

[–]ScrewCorporate 0 points1 point ago

Woohoo, fellow redditor who went to the same theater and same showing.

I'm guessing the answer is yes, since it seems IMAX has been doing this for a while now (I don't know other than Amazing Spider-man) but everyone who saw it in Imax I believe got the same one.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/dark-knight-rises-imax-poster-exclusive-bane-347213

[–]losingxsleep 0 points1 point ago

Exactly like that yes! But we didn't get stickers :(

[–]Shablamokablam 0 points1 point ago

Sounds like a VIP theater in mexico.

[–]Zaev 0 points1 point ago

Wait, only 15 theaters in the nation show it in IMAX Film? I had no idea it was that special when I saw it.

Absolutely amazing though.

EDIT: According to this, there are actually 65 theaters playing it from IMAX film.

[–]losingxsleep 0 points1 point ago

The man lied to us. ಠ_ಠ That's what I get for not checking my facts, I guess. All considering, 65 is still a very exclusive club.

[–]megatom0 15 points16 points ago

This is folly. The dome theaters are awful. I saw TDK in the Charlotte dome theater and it was awful. The whole picture is distorted and just too big. I saw TDKR in a real IMAX and it was amazing. I'm still resentful about having spent $15 on TDK to see it all distorted and missing half the picture. Fuck this post. DO NOT SEE IMAX FILMS ON A DOME. Do not support these theaters they mess up the whole image and kill the presentation.

[–]HugoM 2 points3 points ago

How do I find out?

[–]OverlordQ 2 points3 points ago

Check the map, or check the list

[–]nanowerx 1 point2 points ago

Also, don't watch the fake smaller iMax theaters either. They are so disappointing. Barely bigger than a regular screen, and the high-def resolution being touted actually made some parts of movies incredibly blurry. And what is with the treble being jacked up? Felt like my ears were ringing for two days afterwards.

Not worth the $7 upcharge by any means.

[–]Symbiotx 1 point2 points ago

They really are. I saw a movie at an "Imax dome" in Iowa, and it was bullshit.

[–]amazingmaximo -1 points0 points ago

I also saw TDK at the dome in Charlotte! Discovery Place, right? I actually thought it was really cool, although ridiculous that you can't go to the bathroom in the middle of it. I could feel my bladder deflating when I got out of there.

[–]Wiisal 6 points7 points ago

I wanted to watch it in imax but apparently all the ones near me are "fake" imaxes :(

[–]therockfish 0 points1 point ago

This is what I heard about my location as well!

[–]saskpirate420 3 points4 points ago

The only thing I've ever seen on a dome IMAX was a nature documentary when I was about 13. I saw 40ft tall beavers going at it in full surround video/sound.

Never again.

[–]Iridiumarrow 4 points5 points ago

I saw Inception in a Dome. Holy fuck.

[–]etothemax 0 points1 point ago

When the buildings are folding on the dome screen, they probably looked straight for one split moment in the movie

[–]Iridiumarrow 0 points1 point ago

That scene was probably one of the best.

[–]smurfsithlord 2 points3 points ago

So do you think there is a huge difference in the imax scenes and the regular film?

[–]rohms 7 points8 points ago

I saw it on a non-dome IMAX screen, and the part with the planes at the beginning was surreal.

[–]megatom0 4 points5 points ago

Fact this film was never meant to be seen on a dome screen. The dome screen distorts the image. Also the dome screens are designed so that the whole image is actually bigger than a persons field of vision, this means you have to look around the screen to get the full image of the picture. Think if you got up real close to a TV. It is a horrible movie going experience. For TDKR I chose to see in a digital IMAX over seeing it on IMAX film with a dome. This is due to my experience seeing TDK in an IMAX dome and almost walking out due to how horrible the presentation was.

[–]rohms 0 points1 point ago

That's pretty interesting, thanks for sharing. Prior to TDKR, the only IMAX screen I'd sceen was about the oceans in a science museum (dome screen) and I thought I was missing out for this. Glad I got to see it as intended, then!

[–]megatom0 1 point2 points ago

Yes. Especially for a movie like TDKR where it was filmed in IMAX. The IMAX format really shines. Having said that. DO NOT SEE THIS FILM IN A DOME. The dome screens were designed in the mid 90's before IMAX was ever thought of being used for long format Hollywood films. This means that The aspect ratio is completely fucked up. They were essentially designed to be half IMAX half planetariums as many early IMAX films were space oriented NASA movies. The end result for todays films is that the picture is simply too big. It is wider than your field of vision. Also the way they were designed was for people to be in short showings, thus the seating is usually very narrow and extremely hard to get in an out of. In the Charlotte Discovery place Dome theater for instance your knees almost knock up against the seat in front of you. To let people in and out you actually have to stand up. NEVER see an IMAX film at a dome theater. I say this in hopes that no one ever goes to see IMAX films at dome theaters and they eventually get shut down as they are ruining both the movie going experience for millions of people and also drastically misrepresenting what IMAX is.

[–]brycedriesenga 0 points1 point ago

Definitely worth seeing it in IMAX. I saw it in the real IMAX (not the dome or the small IMAX) and it was just incredible. I saw it a couple days later in a standard theater (with pretty nice digital projectors though) and it was just not quite as incredible. Still good, but just not the same.

[–]GoldwaterAndTea 0 points1 point ago

There really is no comparison. I don't even go to the theaters to see movies anymore unless they're in IMAX. If it's not playing in IMAX I'll just wait for it to come out on DVD.
IMAX provides the only cinematic experience that is actually worth its ticket price.

[–]JBu92 2 points3 points ago

Dude I went to see the IMAX version, thinking it'd be a dome theater (that has been my only experience w/ IMAX), and it WASN'T! It was just a slightly larger screen! I was so dissappoint!

[–]lonesoldier4789 1 point2 points ago

the IMAX dome around here is kind of shitty. The regular IMAX is much better IMO

[–]strick47 1 point2 points ago

Oh my, this made me laugh so hard. My friends and I all went to see it in the dome theater in tampa and had the exact same reaction. I also loved how instead of trailers there was just a man explaining that if you feel the IMAX effect just close your eyes and it should go away.

[–]eoworm 0 points1 point ago

i was there too. the only thing that was... disturbing was that THING on bale's eye. in dome IMAX it had to be 5 foot across in close-ups. wanted to sling milk duds in an attempt to destroy it but simultaneously feared they may add to its overall mass.

[–]welmoe 1 point2 points ago

I saw it on regular IMAX yesterday night and it was amazing. I can't even imagine what it'd be like on a dome.

[–]sugareeme 1 point2 points ago

I watched this way too long. at a [5]

[–]Katy_Swicegood 1 point2 points ago

Anyone see it on the BFI IMAX in London?

[–]Shazaam613 1 point2 points ago

Just saw it at the IMAX Dome at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

Nothing quite like seeing the movie encompassing your entire field of vision.

[–]wookielad 2 points3 points ago

No matter what the title says, I will never not laugh at this gif.

[–]LearnedToLoveTheBomb 0 points1 point ago

Same with me in the front row of an IMAX showing. Had to turn my head to catch a glimpse of each of Bane's eyebrows. Worst part, I wasn't even late, people were just shoving and shit. feelsbadman.jpg

[–]brycedriesenga 0 points1 point ago

Shit, that sucks! Finally the IMAX near me wised up and now allows for reserved seating when you buy you ticket online before you go. So awesome.

[–]Camphash 0 points1 point ago

Especially towards the end where everyone is fighting.

[–]OneCello 0 points1 point ago

I saw it on the regular old screen, would you suggest seeing it again in IMAX?

[–]megatom0 0 points1 point ago

See it in IMAX. DO NOT SEE IT IN IMAX DOME. Domes distort the image and do not give you the authentic IMAX expeirence. IMAX screens are slightly concave but not a fucking dome. Dome theaters are also built with inherent flaws in seating to put the viewer too close the image as they were originally intended to serve as half planetarium screens (as most were built in the mid 90's when there weren't many IMAX films).

[–]beener 0 points1 point ago

Front row, baby! Only way to go!

[–]rjrman 0 points1 point ago

Try it high as fuck, and in the first row.

[–]didshereallysaythat 0 points1 point ago

The domes are bad-ass, I think the only domed one in MA is the museum of science though.

[–]Lakers95 0 points1 point ago

I saw TDKR on Wednesday but I didn't see the first Dark Knight movie. Should I got back and watch it? I LOVED TDKR, but I feel that DK is going to be watered down. Joker is my favorite comic book character though, so maybe there might be a reason to watch it for that.

[–]superindian25 2 points3 points ago

You haven't seen TDK yet whats wrong with you. You just got the whole movie spoiled by watching TDKR first.

[–]Lakers95 0 points1 point ago

TDKR looked way too awesome to pass up.

[–]superindian25 0 points1 point ago

You also got batman begins spoiled another fantastic movie.

[–]Lakers95 0 points1 point ago

I actually DID see batman begins. It was pretty good, but TDKR was much more epic.

[–]a11city 0 points1 point ago

wait what, there are imax domes?!

[–]SharkUW 0 points1 point ago

For nature films and whatnot. They preferably shouldn't even be showing this sort of thing and are generally found in museums and whatnot.

[–]MeatyDeathstar 0 points1 point ago

I saw it tonight in IMAX and agree completely with xccxxx. The proper IMAX scenes were awesome. And the only reason I saw it in IMAX is the sounds quality. In my local cinemaplex, IMAX sound quality is much better than normal showings.

[–]rubenx 0 points1 point ago

Is it really that much better in IMAX?

[–]ZeroMP 0 points1 point ago

Came in here expecting tons of shooting jokes, instead saw the few shooting jokes down voted. Faith in Reddit increasing.

[–]JohnnyWasHere 0 points1 point ago

Dat 70mm.

[–]ken10 0 points1 point ago

I've never been to an IMAX theater. Is there any difference between sitting near the front rows of a regular theater and sitting at the back of an IMAX theater? Wouldn't the screen size seem the same?

[–]SharkUW 0 points1 point ago

Well, first write off dome theaters. They're junk for this. Then the question is if it's an original style IMAX or the new digital/lite version. Regardless, you'll find that the audio and picture is much better. With the lite version you'll want to get there early to avoid close seats and sit at the back. The lite version also has the wrong aspect ratio so you won't see everything you should although still more than a standard screen. Now a proper IMAX screen is fucking huge and sitting at the back of that will be much better but you're likely better off somewhere in the middle of a proper IMAX theater.

[–]DrUncountable 0 points1 point ago

The reason you don't watch movies made for cinema on a giant dome Imax, is the same reason you don't sit in the front row of a normal theater. It sucks. Think about it.

[–]nexus_5 0 points1 point ago

That's a good answer. What about the meaning of death?

[–]DrUncountable 0 points1 point ago

Death has very little meaning.

[–]southnole 0 points1 point ago

had a panic attack in a dome theater.that shit was just too much. saw transformers 2

[–]HoboJoe278 0 points1 point ago

When did people stop referring to Omni-Max movies as dome movies? You would think a theater with super stadium style seating wouldn't want people coming and going during an 2 hr and 44 min movie. Also, more important about an Omni-Max movie, is the elaborate sound system behind the screen.

[–]sav86 0 points1 point ago

I tried watching Inception in VA Chantilly at the Udvar Hazy and it was incredibly hard for me to focus on anything...the screen was too big and it was nauseating for me to follow. I couldn't even begin to imagine what Transformers 2 must've been like seeing it there... I preferred the traditional theater in which I could see everything, digital projection or not...

[–]dumbgaytheist 0 points1 point ago

This, I feel, is actually a problem with some movies in this age. Many are simply too busy, and it becomes a distraction trying to catch everything. Of course this makes them rewatchable, but there is something to be said for stillness and focus that's been done away with for the sake of erratic flash.

[–]puravida1024 0 points1 point ago

Oh GOD I hate dome theaters. I saw the Dark Knight at one and felt like I got whiplash trying to keep up with the Joker's Pencil Trick. It distorts everything, and when someones the center of attention in the shot, they're a 50 foot face 90 degrees above your head. Everything is distorted... I'm ranting too much, this gif is very accurate.

[–]Renix 0 points1 point ago

cat!

[–]ne1411is 0 points1 point ago

Jason is this you?

[–]Girlshatebrian 0 points1 point ago

The Franklin Institute has one, I tried watching Where the Wild Things are, and our entire group almost lost their lunch.

[–]_Volta 0 points1 point ago

Lol. I was the same way. Saw it again the next day but on a regular screen. It was much better that way

[–]ChunkBunny -1 points0 points ago

I've never been willing to shell out the $16.50 (versus $7.50 for the regular show) for IMAX, but I was considering it for DKR.

Since I have never seen an IMAX movie, is it worth it?

Edit: Note that I have a hard time seeing fast-moving action scenes that flip flop camera views. Keep that in mind when giving opinions. :)

[–]bryan05 0 points1 point ago

I did it for Inception. TOTALLY WORTH IT

[–]The_Maddog 0 points1 point ago

I went to watch the movie at an Imax (first time I'd been to one) on Monday. I couldn't hear anything properly for about 15 mins after leaving.

All I could think at the end was "Shit, I'm deaf". Worth it though.

[–]_Hank-Hill_ 0 points1 point ago

Why do these always start with so... Blah blah blah

[–]evil_toad 0 points1 point ago

I saw a small documentary in one of those theaters. there is only one or two seats you can sit in were it isn't extremely warped

[–]DocFoo 0 points1 point ago

Watched Dark Knight Rises at IMAX in Edmonton. Sound didn't play for the first 15 minutes, they said they couldn't rewind it/restart it because it was "digital" then right at the most dramatic, plot twisting part near the end, the whole movie shut down. Got that back running in about 5 minutes but it was already ruined. Got 2 free movie passes and that's about it. Watched a ubernerd NERD RAGE on the guy taking tickets, like he gets a huge chunk of profits or something and can just restart everything. oh and the seats are so packed i had to spread my legs so the old dude in front of me that was reclining to the max could do so. It was disgusting having an old man head literally between my knees.

[–]DrRainbow 0 points1 point ago

Was listening to "Around the World" when I saw this. Made me laugh harder than I have in a while.

[–]toddmusic 0 points1 point ago

I also made the minor mistake of seeing TDKR in a Planetarium (Liberty Science Center, NJ). It was on the suggested "IMAX in film" list on TDKR website. It was great to be immersed in the action, but was sometimes too big across the "sky" to absorb everything. (haha, first world problem)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I almost peed on myself, I needed this lol thanks

[–]fifam94 0 points1 point ago

Was it the MOSI dome in Tampa?
