[–]sk3lt3r 0 points1 point ago

I swear it was Xavier when I first read it(on a poster & in an EG book)

[–]jewunit 0 points1 point ago

I really want a print of the gin one.

[–]icanseeYkidsloveCTC 8 points9 points ago

That made me remember that this band exists.

[–]DonPoppito666 4 points5 points ago

Thought of the same song.

[–]Narfle_the_Garthok 1 point2 points ago

I thought for sure I wasn't the only person who thought of this song when I read this.

[–]latecraigy 8 points9 points ago

[–]KingContext 6 points7 points ago

Why are they all so adorable?!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuteness

[–]iammolotov 1 point2 points ago

Knut, a young polar bear at the Berlin Zoo, has been described in news media as cute.[6]

Oh good thing they have a source on that, I would have surely cried foul otherwise.

[–]GMofOLC 25 points26 points ago

M is for Maybe you could make it faster so nobody can read it.
N is for No, I was just kidding.
O is for Oh, you took me seriously.

[–]insomniasystems 1 point2 points ago

There's just enough time to read it but the pictures are the most important part. Ain't nobody got time fo dat.

[–]sudevsen 1 point2 points ago

P is for Puh-leeses

[–]TheBob 19 points20 points ago

From The Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey. I found this gem when I worked at a bookstore a few years back and immediately snatched it up.

[–]dickfartist 11 points12 points ago

My dad would read this to my siblings and I before bed when we were children. My brother suffered from night terrors for years.

I'm just now making this connection.

[–]Kman1121 0 points1 point ago

Gem.

[–]Zoot-just_zoot 6 points7 points ago

This is pretty hilarious actually but I'm a bit skeptical about Neville's death by ennui. Sounds like natural causes to me.

[–]creepyduckobsession 0 points1 point ago

out of curiosity, did anyone else think this implied suicide? i could never quite tell.

[–]Zoot-just_zoot 0 points1 point ago

Ennui = boredom. Maybe I need to look at it again.

[–]baalsitch 7 points8 points ago

Yay Gashley Crumb Tinies!

[–]HereForKarma 1 point2 points ago

Anyone downvoting you needs to realize that that's the actual source, by Edward Gorey.

[–]baalsitch 2 points3 points ago

Pffffft kids these days. People are actually downvoting me, for a correct source? Reddiquette anyone?

[–]HereForKarma 2 points3 points ago

This is really mean of me, but I like to check how old their account is, in relation to their karma. If it's over a week old and has less than 100 comment karma, they're not even worth getting in a fight with.

I shit you not, someone on reddit basically wanted to argue pirating shit (like photos) from companies, big or small, was okay because everyone does it, and he didn't understand what was wrong. Every time you engage with a downvoting asshole like that, you have another post for them to dowvote.

Also, google usernames of assholes. See if their lives suck. Check their comment history. Some guy on /r/creepypms was being a dick to a girl and telling her she was whiny. He's some loser in an unhappy marriage with a shit job.

It's dickish, but feels great. Don't even point out how much their lives such, watch their post quality deteriorate over time.

I know our topic was downvoting, but if someone publicly says "downvote", the rules above apply too.

[–]alsobewbs 1 point2 points ago

...this comment is creepy in itself.

[–]Jaketh 2 points3 points ago

[–]MyPetRockDied 1 point2 points ago

A VERY relevant song. I love me some Creature Feature.

[–]donut_dave 1 point2 points ago

Thank you! I was reading this thread and all I kept saying in my head was "what the fuck is the name of that song and group!?" My ex let me listen to that years ago and I loved it lol

[–]MadMadHatter 2 points3 points ago

David Lynch (Twin Peaks, Blur Velvet, etc) did an even creepier short film titled Alphabet.

[–]handshakeholocaust 1 point2 points ago

I have this memorized. It's one of my favorites books by him. <3

[–]bunnywings 1 point2 points ago

My sister had this poster when she went to college back in the late nineties... She was about to throw it away but I loved it so much I took it for myself. I was about 12 at the time and the fact that something so morbid interested me, it worried my mother. Must get a new one, dernit.

[–]Paperdawl 1 point2 points ago

I love Edward Gorey's work... The Neglected Murderesses calenders have always been great kitchen decor for me :)

[–]leo986 1 point2 points ago

I don't even like tacks...

[–]Collaterlie_Sisters 1 point2 points ago

That's my kind of creepy.

[–]Antroh 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for this. You just took me back 20 years

My dad used to have a huge poster framed of all of these together

[–]TARDISninja 1 point2 points ago

Such morbid cuteness melts my heart in a metaphorical sense.

[–]l0l_cabbage 1 point2 points ago

Am I the only one who thinks that this is amusing?

[–]curiousparlante 1 point2 points ago

Edward Gorey! I had the pleasure of seeing an exhibit of his illustrations when it came around to my area. Afterwards I bought all four of his Amphigoreys, as he called them. His other stuff gets really, really weird too.

[–]amphigoryglory 2 points3 points ago

My user name is relevant-ish!

[–]FredTheBarber 0 points1 point ago

I was given this as a little book, and I used to have it as a wall poster! I've about got it memorized.

[–]avenlanzer 0 points1 point ago

GashleyCrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey. Love those. Have this poster somewhere around my storage. Gonna have to find it and hang it back up now.

[–]Beericksen 0 points1 point ago

Oh hey this again!

[–]philonius 0 points1 point ago

I first discovered this at my public library, browsing the cartoonist section, back in the late 1970s sometime. Probably read this for the first time sitting right there on the carpeted aisle, completely lost in the art.

[–]The_last_Ash_B 0 points1 point ago

The big old cat, Ombledroom, who lives at his house passed away this week :(

[–]latecraigy 0 points1 point ago

O is for Ombledroom devoured by mice.

Seems fitting

[–]TittyMcFuckstain 0 points1 point ago

I used to get this book from my grade school library about once a month! I loved this growing up!!

[–]quicklookleft 0 points1 point ago

I CAN'T HANDLE THE STAIRS FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[–]musicninja 0 points1 point ago

My English teacher from freshman year of high school accidentally bought this book for her young daughter (going only by the cover). She started to read it to her, and of course realized rather quickly that she had made a mistake. But her daughter loved it, and they now use it as an example of what not to do (eat tacks, etc).

[–]Elgin_McQueen 0 points1 point ago

[–]ErichUberSonic 0 points1 point ago

LOOK. AT. ME. HECTOR.

[–]wiqi1 0 points1 point ago

[–]Ima_reaper 0 points1 point ago

I have this poster hanging in my living room. Love the reactions it gets.

[–]wazawana 0 points1 point ago

Edward Gorey is dark genius

[–]Gonzalez_Lovedoctor 0 points1 point ago

Gorey is such a good artist. I remember a weird book he wrote about a penguin looking thing that was in some rich family's house and just stared at the wall. I had a friend that freaked the fuck out at that book.

[–]toxicbag_joe 0 points1 point ago

"The Doubtful Guest," I think, is the one you're talking about.

[–]Gonzalez_Lovedoctor 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that's the one.

[–]djchsu11 0 points1 point ago

This book is on my coffee table.

[–]SHFFLE 0 points1 point ago

Edward Gorey is awesome. My dad found him some two or three years ago and since then we've gotten the Amphigorey (and right now I can't remember, but I think there was a second one we got as well), as well as a couple individual books. We even went to a special exhibit they had for him in a local art museum, which was quite interesting.

[–]jackk225 0 points1 point ago

Our teacher read this book to us in gradeschool. Not sure what her line of thought was.

[–]WHOWANTSBEEF 0 points1 point ago

You can get this as a poster btw. Have one and I love it.

[–]toxicbag_joe 0 points1 point ago

The Gorey House/Museum has all 26 of these hidden around the place; it's kind of a scavenger hunt to find them all when you visit.

[–]IAMTEHINTERWEBZ 0 points1 point ago

This sounds like something that would be in a Woman in Black type story.

[–]KeroSun 0 points1 point ago

Aww saw this at my local book store an upvote for making my night

[–]CraftyTrevor 0 points1 point ago

I own a physical copy of this book. I love it.

[–]Crazymolerat 0 points1 point ago

My math teacher had this as a calendar on his wall.

[–]PolarX 0 points1 point ago

This was written by Edward Gorey. I do believe we get the words "gore" and "gory" from his name.

[–]philonius 5 points6 points ago

Nope, just happy coincidence. Both words are recorded back to the 15th century, probably from "gore" and "gar" meaning "spear."
(one source)

[–]darkfrog13 1 point2 points ago

I always figured Gorey was a pen name or he had changed his name to it. Nope, it was his birth name.

[–]wolverine213 0 points1 point ago

back then he would've been Edward Speary.

[–]Patchy_Burrito 0 points1 point ago

I actually kind of like this. It's like if Tim Burton wrote a children's book.

[–]abadonnabananna 10 points11 points ago

Considering it came out in 1963, it likely was an inspiration.

[–]missesquillax 1 point2 points ago

He did: The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy. Very much inspired by Edward Gorey.

[–]Commercialtalk 0 points1 point ago

He did write childrens books. Just like this infact.

[–]darkfrog13 0 points1 point ago

Or more like if Edward Gorey wrote a children's book... oh wait.
