I really enjoy all of the people downvoting you because they don't realize you're just copying and pasting the last thread.

[–]daggoneshawn 35 points36 points ago

I was like WHY ARE YOU ARGUING WITH YOURSELF?

[–]blargg8 3 points4 points ago

I was like why in the fuck is "SO BRAVE!" upvoted this much?

[–]mainhaxor 2 points3 points ago

I think it's kinda low to do this.

[–]mainhaxor 7 points8 points ago

I agree.

[–]derrida_n_shit 10 points11 points ago

I'd submit this to /r/bestof if I knew how.

I'm on my phone. Could you please do it? Give it a clever title too. I'll just ask for a 45% cut of your total karma acquired.

[–]keeganadavis 7 points8 points ago

I dont think karma works like that.

[–]well_golly 1 point2 points ago

[–]brainpower4 18 points19 points ago

Actually, more people than you'd expect are abusive after a high speed chase. After prolonged periods of heightened activity, the rational, compassionate, and thinking parts of our brain shut down in favor of our baser instincts.

Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking does a decent job of covering it without bogging down in the biological specifics.

[–]Sit-Down_Comedian 7 points8 points ago

Yeah, I'm sorry, but if you're a police officer you don't get to lose your shit unless you agree to be subject to the same assault and battery laws as everyone else and not the special get off light cop laws. When everything is truly equal you can argue about baser instincts and all that crap but while cops and civilians are still being held to different legal standards your argument is invalid.

Edit: clarity - your arguments about biology are of course sound but people do different things when they know they're not going to get in trouble. Cops know they won't have the same punishment for assault that a civilian would if they assaulted someone.

[–]brainpower4 1 point2 points ago

Are there times when force is required to detain a criminal? Yes, otherwise police wouldn't have any recourse to capture potentially dangerous criminals other than hoping to catch them by surprise or holding them at gunpoint (which I think anyone would agree is a recipe for disaster, even beyond the potential for violence inherent in physical restraint). Some people just aren't going to come along quietly.

Instead, police training needs to refocus on serving the community, rather than catching criminals. Step one would probably be to ban high speed chases without direct approval from a superior. High speed chases have the potential to cause huge amounts of property damage and tragic lose of life for both parties or civilians. A police officer in the heat of the moment, who has been stopping traffic for the last 6 hours with no excitement, and finally given a chance for glory isn't in the frame of mind to make that decision rationally. And of course that leaves out the PR disasters that have come out of chases. The L.A race riots and Florida race riots over Arthur McDuffie's death in 1980 were both the direct result of high speed chases leading to poor decision making by police officers.

I also think it is a mistake to assume that police officers would act differently (other than to not begin the chase in the first place which happens while they are still thinking clearly) if they knew the potential consequences. In life or death split second decisions no one is thinking about whether they are going to be in trouble afterwards, and humans have a very difficult time discerning when those situations actually stop. I'd be very surprised if the proticall for the officers in that clip was to not remain in the police car and assess the situations before making the arrest. That didn't happen because none of the officers were capable of thinking of line 143 in code 52C. They were acting based on the functioning portions of their brains and telling those parts of the brain "If you go out there and break that guy's arm, you will go to jail for 5-10" isn't going to change the fact that the cop still sees him as a potentially dangerous criminal who needs to be neutralized.

[–]Drutarg 1 point2 points ago

There's a cop here in town that makes fun of me whenever I see him. feelsbadman.jpg

[–]NickPrefect 8 points9 points ago

According to the video description, they were in fact fired.

[–]NickPrefect 1 point2 points ago

Well sheeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit...

[–]meangrampa 0 points1 point ago

You didn't think that they would really have to face any consequences for their behaviour did you? They're cops. They had to sit out a while and they're not going to get any back pay for the time they were "fired". As far as we'll ever find out. But cops are treated differently. Sure they had to be "punished". But a little time goes by and the public stops looking so close and they get to go back to work.

Even if the "firing" had stuck at this department, the next county over would hire them. Bad cops just go round and round and the police can't figure out why the public doesn't trust them. But that's not really true they know why, they just don't care. They're cops.

[–]SpruceCaboose 17 points18 points ago

And you'd be wrong.

Five Birmingham police officers have been fired for a January 2008 beating of an already-unconscious suspect with fists, feet and a billy club, a battering caught on videotape....

EDIT: I'll eat the downvotes for this one, but for anyone else who might not have picked up on it, scruffy01 is the poster for all these comments. He is basically arguing with himself using all the old comments from the last time this was posted.

[–]ZombieFaceXP 14 points15 points ago

Someone didnt read the whole thread.

[–]SpruceCaboose 22 points23 points ago

Oh I get what is going on...

Didn't notice that it was the same poster replying to himself making all the same arguments.

I'm an asshole, carry on.

[–]thats-a-repost 68 points69 points ago

Cops are paid to put their personal feelings aside and uphold the law, that is no excuse for acting above the law and brutally beating the shit out of someone. If you can't handle that then don't become a police officer, nobody is above the law for any reason, there is no excuse for thinking other wise.

[–]magma_asp 26 points27 points ago

[–]PilarTernara2 1 point2 points ago

Right there with you. Not a matter of not getting the joke, just of being so quick to jump on an opposing opinion that you don't even read what they say.

[–]Alvleeskliersap 122 points123 points ago

I've seen a Dutch TV show featuring a guy who was running from the police, he was driving a motorcycle. When they had finally managed to stop him, the first thing the police did was ask: "are you ok? You are trembling, just take a deep breath etc"

something along those lines. They seemed concerned about the guy who ran from them.

[–]Koernchen 93 points94 points ago

Cause that's what the police is supposed to do, care for people, if he ran, well thats just what to expect of a criminal who doesn't give a damn......but cops are supposed to be the better humans, the good ones, the nice ones, protect and serve everyone, enforce the law, and everyone is equal in front of the law and blabla, you heard it all before, but cops are supposed to be the good guys, and good guys don't beat up an unconscious body, but call an ambulance, make sure he survives and then cuff him.

[–]jamart 19 points20 points ago

Police are people who ahve volunteered to wear the uniform, carry the badge/warrant card, and depending on the jurisdiction and their duties, possible carry the guns.

They are people who, by joining the police feel they are capable or upholding the laws of the land, of protecting people and property and society generally. I think the should be squeaky damn clean to even think they're capable of doing that job.

[–]Jawshee_pdx 11 points12 points ago

I have been in altercations that involved police officers in which they were very compassionate after getting the situation under control.

"We've been chasing you at 142 miles per hour for 15 minutes .. what the hell were you thinking? Are you ok?"

[–]CosmicDustbunny 34 points35 points ago

It's the unconscious ones you really have to watch out for!

[–]JohnnyMcDoodle 13 points14 points ago

[–]rockoblocko 6 points7 points ago

No, he's coming right at us!

[–]cleytoncav 52 points53 points ago

Can someone explain to me why cops always appear to be beating on criminals? Obviously he did something wrong, but pin him down and handcuff him. There's no need to punch him.

[–]Zaphod1620 139 points140 points ago

This was Anthony Warren in Birmingham, AL in 2009. He had literally moments before tried to kill an officer by running him over, but luckily only got the officer's leg. I still can't accept the beating though, and neither could the city. All 5 officers were fired and Anthony Warren is serving 20 years for the attempted murder of the cop. I cannot recall why he was running though.

[–]fishrobe 33 points34 points ago

ah, so, "It's alright, folks! he's OK!"

[–]Zaphod1620 5 points6 points ago

Pretty much, yes.

[–]rjhelms 36 points37 points ago

They are raging because of how much danger this asshole put himself, the cops, and the public in.

It doesn't justify their actions, but when I hear about idiots who get involved in high-speed chases I want to beat them up, too. Knowing that I wouldn't be able to handle myself appropriately in situations like the ones these cops are in is one of the (many, many, many) reasons why I'm not and never will be a police officer.

[–]Timboflex 7 points8 points ago

I have a hard time believing they were raging for how much danger he put HIMSELF in. Everyone else, yeah, but I get kind of a "we would prefer if you were dead" vibe from the cops towards the guy on the ground.

Can someone explain to me why cops always appear to be beating on criminals?

Because your worldview is built off what you see on the internet.

[–]Lucifur142 1 point2 points ago

Their beating him quick so that they can use the car accident as a cause for his injuries. There was a similar case of the D.E.A. accidently shooting a little girl in the head while trying to stop the man driving the car. Afterwords they beat their cars with their batons to make it look like he rammed their cars. It's actually pretty common.

[–]cleytoncav 25 points26 points ago

That's disgusting.

[–]constant_u4ea 5 points6 points ago

sauce for the DEA story? sounds a little hollywood to me

[–]DickMcPusscunt 12 points13 points ago

No it's not really that common.

[–]Webkun 3 points4 points ago

no, its not common at all dipshit.

[–]porterpot 63 points64 points ago

[–]Audio-didact 1 point2 points ago

Like anyone would want to 'R' you...

[–]scottstedman 17 points18 points ago

Full Video.

The guy tried to kill a police officer by running him over shortly before the events in the gif.

It obviously doesn't give anyone the right to beat an unconscious man who is fully submissive. All 5 police officers have been fired.

Not all cops are bad people. I am prepared for my downvote shower, but I probably would have done the same to somebody who just tried to violently kill somebody I trust my life with.

Edit: I had my comments sorted by "new" and not by "top". So apparently people have mentioned this before once or twice.

[–]El_Biffo 3 points4 points ago

No downvote from me. In fact for your reasoned, well thought out and informative post you can this here upvote. Glad those cops were sacked.

[–]pnsmcgraw 2 points3 points ago

How dare he lie there so menacingly.

[–]debash 2 points3 points ago

Your a police officer. Not a thug or are you???

[–]dudleydidwrong 2 points3 points ago

You can judge the quality of a police chase by counting the number of cops that show up for the post-chase beatdown.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

If you cannot control yourself better than that you have no business being a police officer. Beating a guy who is laying there not moving due to trauma is inexcusable regardless of what he did. Every one of those officers who participated in the beatings should be fired and criminally charged. Good cops are forever tainted by these kinds of pathetic assholes.

Anyone who is likely to be encountering people in car accidents should be trained to never move someone at all untill they are sure there's no spine injuries, let alone beat the shit out them.

I think they are beating him just out of frustration. Human minds are weak like that.

[–]SNG_stillsaturn 3 points4 points ago

ok this post is really fucked up but not why you think. the person who posted this, completely left out the part before this. the guy in the van tries running over a cop. the cop tries to get in front of his van and the guy floors it, obviously attempting to kill the officer. once they get a hold of him, they beat the shit out of him because he just tried to kill someone. does it justify them wailing on him like that? maybe not, but the man tried to run someone down with his car, i dont feel sorry for him. im most upset about the person who posted this, intentionally leaving out a very important part to make you feel a certain way about the cops. thats just fucked up.

[–]Lucky-13 1 point2 points ago

Maybe not? Absolutely not. Justice is not served when it is reached by methods of injustice.

Does this make the police look bad? Yes, and it absolutely should, no context makes this acceptable. The man may deserve no pity for his crimes, but he still deserves his rights.

[–]1O1I0III01O10I1O01 4 points5 points ago

it doesnt matter what happened before, he wasnt a threat.

[–]Spacehusky 5 points6 points ago

Because you're small minded and use whatever carefully selected evidence you can to support your preconceived notions?

[–]jamart 10 points11 points ago

Just from personal experience, mine is based on the hundreds of people that ahve died in police custody over the past few years without any investigation of any kind being organised.
How people like PC Simon Harwood managed to get away with killing a man, and how the police force here in the UK seemed to willingly turn a blind eye to make sure that he could rejoin the police force despite having a disciplinary record five lever arch files thick. How it has been shown that police were taken bribes from News International, how the CPS here seems to shoot the majority of any actions brought against members of the police in the foot, and how when people like Ali Dizeai are charged, there always seem to be mistakes in procedure which mean the cases against the accussed are either dorpped or delayed by years. And, of course, talking to people I know in the police force and who work as MPs in the RAF.

Now, I know that not all police officers are like the above, but there is still a strong, disturbing element, and I doubt it's unique to the UK. edit: sorry i the tone seems quite harsh. I'd liek to reemphasise that I know there are many good officers. My brother-in-law's best man is a policeman, and is a fab guy

[–]sweet_potatofries 1 point2 points ago

Not all, but MOST and that is enough to justify the hate, like the people trying to justify the beating with this "brother" bullshit.

[–]yayapfool 2 points3 points ago

This is sick as fuck. I hate people.

This is a prime example of what only showing certain parts of a video can portray. If I remember correctly this guy almost killed multiple people (including police) because of his dangerous driving, however in this video it makes it just look like he crashes and then the Police start beating him up for no reason. I'm not justifying the Police's actions here as it's clearly wrong just pointing out that people should get the full story before formulating an opinion.

If this clip showed the driver almost hitting people with his vehicle then cut before this incident the comments would be something along the lines of "I hope this scumbag crashes and dies" or "This guy is a huge asshole I hope he gets caught and goes to jail for the rest of his life". instead of "Fuck Police", "Police brutality! What did this guy do to deserve it!". Just thought I would point that out.

[–]Koernchen 18 points19 points ago

Well even if he is a huge asshole, this was unjustified. No matter what he did, damn it, cops are supposed to be better than that. Cause they're cops, and what they do in that video is not only illegal but just inhuman and plain disgusting. I expect cops to not do illegal things, period, they are cops, they are not above the law and they shouldn't get away with it, cause they are cops damn it, how much is a legal system worth where cops are just as bad as criminals? Cops are supposed to be the good guys, we have laws for a reason, and we have morals for a reason, punching someone who's on the floor already is dispiteful!

[–]elzorrodorito 10 points11 points ago

Why do I have the sudden urge to eat bacon?

Oh wait, it's bacon.

[–]N0xM3RCY 0 points1 point ago

this pisses me off so much.

[–]treespleaseSC 0 points1 point ago

Now just add one of the dashcam shots of a semi or another driver smashing into them all. Then all will be in balance.

[–]patheticpun 0 points1 point ago

Don't forget to take off your uniforms and eat his face, too.

[–]NancyReaganTesticles 0 points1 point ago

my brain just keep playing yakety sax in the background whenever i see this

[–]knight4646 0 points1 point ago

This reminds of tea bagging after you get a kill in BF3. Unnecessary, but fuck it.

[–]notbobsagat 0 points1 point ago

[–]SilentJeans 0 points1 point ago

Not all cops are bad, but I always live by the rule that my brother dropped on me as a teen. Never trust an agent of the government.

[–]IHv2RtrnSumVdeotapes 0 points1 point ago

a quick Google search seems to reveal all 5 officers got their jobs back. meanwhile this Guy got 20 years and unless he's doing fed time, with good time he will be out in ten and with a few prison programs he will be out in six.

I only hope he doesent come across a redditor showing him some love in this thread.because he wont have love for you that's for sure.

[–]shopatshell 0 points1 point ago

Do criminals just never use their seat belt?

[–]Dubsgalore 0 points1 point ago

Because he was innocent

[–]HouseOfBounce 0 points1 point ago

Had a shooting were I live. Two cops dropped at a shooting range with a customized fully auto AK-47. They were on the ground screaming-wounded in the face. By the time a chase ensued on the highway, they were dead. The cops chased him for a good while going 100mph+. When he stoped, the officers opened fire. Witnesses report over 100 shots were fired and AR-15s were used by the officers. If these cops had another officer wounded or had an attempt at another's life i would beat the fuck out of the suspect too. Sad part about the shooting- it was caused by an arguement he had with his wife over a tube of Neutrogena.

[–]feranard 0 points1 point ago

...This seems just like a family guy cartoon.

Also, i found it hilarious.

[–]insanekid66 0 points1 point ago

Fuckin hilarious

[–]DavidLA213 0 points1 point ago

Whatever the circumstances this man has to be a millionaire now. Jurors hate cops

[–]Allthetacos 0 points1 point ago

Yep, this happened less than a mile away from my house. The cops around here don't get much action. They jump at the chance to abuse their rights. Makes me sick.

[–]FrostyD7 0 points1 point ago

He hit a cop, this is pretty much the routine response, he had it coming.

[–]makhouse 0 points1 point ago

When I see videos like this of unnecassary police brutality, it makes me so mad like nothing ever has before. It's remarkable.

dude that is not ok!!! those cops should be fired

[–]Raikunoso 0 points1 point ago

Funny how he's already down and obviously injured, but they still beat him. The cops are probably thinking "He's not dead, so let's kill him and say it was self-defense!"

[–]vinnix 0 points1 point ago

Hold C-spine immobilization!!!!! Orr nottt.. let's start punching him in the head instead.

[–]HipHoppin 0 points1 point ago

Came here to expect people to be outraged, see that reddit is okay with this .gif

[–]zissored 0 points1 point ago

the cop, is trying to throw a spike strip in front of the van to flatten the tires. The van driver is trying to swerve around the spike strip to avoid flat tires.

[–]iced327 0 points1 point ago

Don't care about the cops beating the dude, only care about how AWESOME it was that he fell out the window of a rolling vehicle.

[–]texastopher01 0 points1 point ago

That is so fucked up! You can't trust the police, it's stil no excuse to run!

[–]ittakesacrane 0 points1 point ago
