That is some fantastic defensive driving though.

[–]rxninja 14 points15 points ago

That's exactly how everyone crosses the street all the time in Newark, NJ. It's infuriating to drive in that city, probably moreso than Philadelphia.

[–]ManiacDanDrexel Hill 15 points16 points ago

I was driving in Troy NY (where I went to college) and someone crossed like this. When sh got to the other side, she realized she had dropped something in the middle of the street, so she just went back out and got it, stepping in front of 4 more cars.

For this to be accurate for Philly she needs to be on a bicycle and going the wrong way down a one-way street.

I had someone do that to me two weeks ago at 21st & Winter. Lady and her husband or whatever are walking along Winter. They get to 21st, light goes green for traffic, cars start crossing the intersection. SMALL gap after a truck and between my car (and another to the right of me) and she decides this is the perfect time to cross, and just slowly walks into the intersection.

Both of us slammed on our brakes, and when I honked and yelled at her she gave me the finger and stood in the intersection for a second, before walking off. I was shaking with anger, this dumbass nearly just got her and her husband killed and had the nerve to flip us off for legally driving through an intersection on a green light.

That is the worst. I've had jaywalkers pop out from behind cars and whatnot to me driving through the city and honk at them, then they get angry and curse you out.

I honestly do not understand why anyone does this.

[–]FuckingDIY 3 points4 points ago

The worst is when you are riding your bike and someone starts jaywalking in front of you when you are trying to make a light. People aren't good at judging your speed, or they don't see you because you aren't big enough.

It's pretty difficult to stop when someone steps right in front of you...especially if your brakes suck. Then they look at you like it's your fault.

[–]ManiacDanDrexel Hill 0 points1 point ago

Well wait...if your brakes suck you should probably fix them so you don't hit anything. There are legal stopping distances for bicycles.

[–]sutiibuEast Point Breeze/Newbold 3 points4 points ago

Just like a car, a bike doesn't stop on a dime. But now that you mention it, what IS the legal stopping distance for a bike?

[–]ManiacDanDrexel Hill 1 point2 points ago

This thread quotes a no-longer-published philly.com article citing "15ft at 15mph."

It's also full of a bunch of assholes, so I don't know if the OP is actually quoting correctly. The 15-for-15 figure seems reasonable though.

[–]minority4lefthanders 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure one could stop a bike going 15 with their feet within 15. The point remains that good brakes or not the only people who seem to be respectful of cyclist are other cyclist and pedestrians seem to struggle with judging our speed when darting into traffic.

[–]d_rob 1 point2 points ago

RPI or HVCC?

[–]ManiacDanDrexel Hill 1 point2 points ago

RPI

[–]d_rob 0 points1 point ago

Ah, so you're smart? (Me too.)

[–]ManiacDanDrexel Hill 0 points1 point ago

That's what they tell me

[–]SirBruceMegaNeasty Boy 13 points14 points ago

I assume this happens everyday on Roosevelt Blvd

[–]BalooDPProud Roman Catholic 19 points20 points ago

The Boulevard should be blown up and repaved. Most accident-prone road in the NATION. Fuck that entire road, and fuck Red Line too.

[–]cojafojiMiquon 9 points10 points ago

Yes. You, I like you. Let's get you elected Mayor.

Run on the singular platform of demolishing and redoing Roosevelt Boulevard.

[–]BalooDPProud Roman Catholic 2 points3 points ago

And somehow find a way for the Delaware Port Authority to pay for it with tolls from the 5 bridges leading from NJ, especially the two with $5 apiece tolls...

[–]LePwnz0rsWissonoming 4 points5 points ago

Tacony Palmyra one is 2 bucks still

[–]Cathbardoesn't eat cheesesteaks 2 points3 points ago

And the employees are the friendliest of any toll-workers I've ever encountered.

[–]Golden12345The Forgotten Lands 5 points6 points ago

Except for the blonde with the red nails I got the other day.

When I handed her the toll she gave me a look like I'd interrupted her nap or something. It was a business commute, so I asked, "Can I get a receipt please?" She sighed, got the receipt, and (to my amazement) threw it at me!

But the best was when I wished her a good day. I do that automatically, and most toll workers appreciate it and say something like "you too." Not blondie.

Her response: "I will."

[–]BalooDPProud Roman Catholic 0 points1 point ago

If I didn't live in South Philly I would take the Tacony Palmyra or Burlington-Bristol Bridge whenever I could.

[–]LePwnz0rsWissonoming 0 points1 point ago

They also need to do the middle 2 lanes completely underground.. I hate having to wait for 4 lights to cross the street

[–]Soy_El_CientificoRhawnhurst 0 points1 point ago

*Red Lion

[–]cxavierTimberwalk 0 points1 point ago

I almost got hit there by a car once. Most confusing cross-way ever.

[–]JAM13Wissinoming 0 points1 point ago

The Boulevard by the Wow roller skating rink/kmart right before Cottman is terrible

[–]Cathbardoesn't eat cheesesteaks 2 points3 points ago

and it's about to be worse with a few new lights.

[–]SirBruceMegaNeasty Boy 0 points1 point ago

It's actually called JAMZ! Pretty close to your username. Well, I got a laugh out of it anyway.

[–]lamoj 6 points7 points ago

College campus intersections: Look down and walk straight, don't acknowledge traffic lights or the paths of moving vehicles.

[–]sprucenoose 8 points9 points ago

I am not sure what Eastern European country this is from, but that ambulance looks like it was speeding through the intersection without its lights on. There might have been a stop sign there, you can't see. Either way, someone is being irresponsible. What does this have to do with Philly?

[–]D_Fizzle215South Philly 2 points3 points ago

Look at the gif again. It looks like it's keeping the pace with traffic. Kinda looks like someone attempting to cross a large 4 way throughoughfare without even looking. People do this shit all the time. Girard Ave, Oregon Ave, all over Broad St, the Blvd, etc.

[–]cynicproject 3 points4 points ago

There would be so much shit in my pants.

[–]nedthedragonslayer 6 points7 points ago

We need to work together, not crossing the street at reds, and cars actually stopping at stop signs/lights.

[–]catjugglerWest Philly 2 points3 points ago

There's also the good ol "Oh, the light just turned red? Time to cross really slow."

[–]CheeseStrudel 2 points3 points ago

I like to play a game where I see how close I can get to those people on my bike without actually hitting them. It's great watching people on their cell phones shit themselves when I pass right in front of them.

[–]RockyK 2 points3 points ago

Why can't this be a crime? She's endangering the motorist!

[–]soloreddit 2 points3 points ago

It's called jaywalking. It's an infraction or misdemeanor depending on where you live.

[–]skepticalplatypus 1 point2 points ago

This happened to me at 430 am on Market. You'd think I'd be easy to avoid...as the only car on the road

[–]usernameftw 1 point2 points ago

That's all of Massachusetts.

[–]mastabeats 0 points1 point ago

I hate those people that are like bordering on that fucking edge of my car as i pass them and they like lean over as my car is passing them as if like they're ganna be saving a bunch of fucking time.

[–]PrancemasterHawthorne is a real neighborhood 0 points1 point ago

This past Sunday, some dumb couple was walking up 2nd Street between Parrish & Brown... in the street and I told them that the sidewalk was for pedestrians. They yelled "we're crossing!" and I told them that's what the crosswalk is for. About a minute later, I got pegged with a fucking water bottle from these cowards in their SUV heading back to whatever fuckhead New Jersey town they came from.

I've never wanted to bust out someone's car windows so bad in my life.

[–]lannielan 0 points1 point ago

I have to drive through Allegheny Ave to get to school. And oh my god. Some people just cross so fucking slow in the morning, while they look you RIGHT in the eye as if you've done something wrong! The fucked up part? You stop to let them cross! Assholes. That's why I always appreciate it when people pick up their pace a little bit when crossing the street because that's what I do.

[–]jabrodo 0 points1 point ago

Someone else is mad at the dumb asses who think they can still cross on the closes and ripped up crosswalk at Market and JFK too? Or are you a Penn student?

[–]Deeblite 1 point2 points ago

People in Philly know what a crosswalk is?

[–]doswarriorWest Philly 0 points1 point ago

What you don't realize is that woman is actually incredibly strong and just stopped that van from hitting her with one hand. I believe we've now witnessed the first documented evidence of real life super heroes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Man. Leave this bullshit at r/gifs. Fuck. This sub is turning into dumb memes, gifs and skyline photos.
