I had no idea they had powerlifting competitions at that age.

[–]Voltenion 19 points20 points ago

Isn't very unhealthy too? I had a friend in high school who was smaller than every girl in the class because he lift heights when he was a kid.

[–]DrascaL 8 points9 points ago

There is no evidence that lifting at a young age stunts growth, and there are multiple papers saying that lifting at a young age does not stunt growth.

I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure they're located in the /r/fitness faq.

[–]Anticitizen-Zero 3 points4 points ago

Here is some support for that.

[–]dumbkid -2 points-1 points ago

Ive known 2 guys from primary school who were into weights and gymnastics etc from a very young age, both are freaking tiny (one is anout 5' tall, other maybe 5'2. Even though its anecdotal evidence I completely believe that

[–]Cojones893 2 points3 points ago

What if it was just the gymnastics that caused it?

[–]redditisnotevolving 3 points4 points ago

What do heights look like and how do you lift them? No, don't change it, I'm just surprised no one has said anything yet.

[–]MrPeoples 7 points8 points ago

I'm in the same boat as your friend. I'm small but I'm a big small.

[–]gurboura 17 points18 points ago

You're tall but your penis is small?

[–]MrPeoples 24 points25 points ago

Opposite. I'm short but my penis is small.

[–]pearlyblueclouds 3 points4 points ago

MrPeoples is actually an appropriate name for your penis in that case.

[–]HighInAK 2 points3 points ago

I bet this dude has a fuckin' massive set of swingers.

[–]gurboura -5 points-4 points ago

Soooo, it's like a midget penis?

[–]Piratcykel 4 points5 points ago

I'm just small, not big in any way. Shorter than the majority of girls and inferior to all the guys when it comes to body-size.

I'm 1,60m, which is about 20-30 cm shorter than the average guy in Sweden, and 10-15 cm shorter than the average girl.

Sucks to be me.

[–]Mr_Grievous 10 points11 points ago

That's 5'3" for the U.S. crowd.

[–]ChaosDesigned 4 points5 points ago

omg thank you, I was like WHAT ARE ALL THESE WEIRD MEASUREMENTS!!?

[–]MrPeoples 0 points1 point ago

Same height as me.

[–]LeSandwiich 0 points1 point ago

Wow the average height for swedish girls is 5'7 to 5'9? a girl in America who's over 5'7 is considered pretty tall. I'm a 5'7 dude, so I guess I'll stay out of Sweden.

[–]Piratcykel 0 points1 point ago

It depends, but most girls are <1.70m (5'7"). But there are lots of people that are shorter than that to, but the majority isn't.

And to see guys around 1.90m (~6'2") is not to rare either.

[–]smnmblst 19 points20 points ago

No, it's a zero-contact sport, thus growth plates will not be broken. Gymnastics, however, is high-impact, and can stunt your growth.

[–]Economadness 32 points33 points ago

The growth plates are incredibly weak at that age because it would be sort of stupid for them to be well formed, and when you are doing something like a 1 rep max (or really any power or olympic lifting) your muscles can pull pieces off of them.

Lifting heavy weights is a crazy bad idea for a kind that age.

[–]Insamity 7 points8 points ago

Most growth plate fractures — more than 30% — occur in the long bones of the fingers. They are also common in the outer bone of the forearm (radius), and lower bones of the leg (the tibia and fibula).

One third of all growth plate injuries occur in competitive sports, such as football, basketball, or gymnastics. About 20 percent of growth plate fractures occur as a result of recreational activities, such as biking, sledding, skiing, or skateboarding.

So singling out powerlifting as being extra dangerous some how just isn't supported by the data.

[–]Buckeyefan123 0 points1 point ago

Hey i got mine broke this summer playing football good times except im pretty much fully grown

[–]pgan91 5 points6 points ago

I suppose this would be a good time for [Citation Needed].

As far as I know, research has not found any significant evidence that weightlifting impairs growth.

[–]swampfish 0 points1 point ago

You ask for citation but then make a claim with no citation. Sigh.

[–]pgan91 8 points9 points ago

Here is a discussion from a peer reviewed journal. First question covers whether or not strength training in children leads to injuries. Here is one covering the topic you're talking about. 1RM testing in young children.

Edit: Here is another one I found. Here is one advocating for strength training in children.

Uh... I could probably find more, but these are the ones with info available to the public. Not sure if everybody has access to some of the other journals.

[–]CuedUp 2 points3 points ago

Hey, just asking. Is there an affordable public access to full articles on pubmed or other research sites like that? I have been out in the real world for a few years and would like to find decent online access to those journals again...

[–]swampfish 1 point2 points ago

Poster delivers! Nice work. Interesting reading too. Thanks!

[–]Doctor_Kitten 0 points1 point ago

I have a friend who was a gymnast when he was a kid. He did that thing where he flips around with the rings and shit... he is the shortest person I know.

[–]mdjubasak 9 points10 points ago

Also probably the strongest. The guys on the rings are beasts.

[–]dumbkid 0 points1 point ago

I had a gymnast friend in primary school, he stopped growing in about year 5 and is now 5' tall as an adult, I bet he really regrets it

[–]RainDownMyBlues 1 point2 points ago

I'm betting he didn't have much of a choice. Same with those girls in beauty pageants.

[–]ohgodwhydidIjoin 0 points1 point ago

My cousin was the same and is also very short

[–]spader1 0 points1 point ago

I don't know about stunting growth, but if he continues to lift things like that (with his back) then he's going to have much, much worse problems...

[–]smnmblst 0 points1 point ago

His form sucks, he's like five though. BTW loading the back or using it as a moment arm during a lift is not an inherently dangerous practice as it contains muscle tissue that can be strengthened just like any other part of the body. See Romanian deadlifts, good mornings, etc.

[–]i_love_younicorns 0 points1 point ago

SO UNHEALTHY!

[–]bopll 0 points1 point ago

Common misconception.

[–]Condor911 1 point2 points ago

It's like toddlers and tiaras for boys

[–]derpledooDLEDOO 93 points94 points ago

O'DOYLE RULES

[–]Pearce12321 5 points6 points ago

O'Doyle, I have a feelin' your whole family is going down

[–]Babkock -5 points-4 points ago

Fuck, where do I know that from?

[–]OMISHIDAMARU 1 point2 points ago

\o/

[–]emilyalamode 52 points53 points ago

You couldn't get it all the way up either?

[–]hintoa 22 points23 points ago

[–]PedroDelCaso 4 points5 points ago

I hope it didn't.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]PedroDelCaso 2 points3 points ago

Alright, I won't! Cheers for the heads up

[–]Spysix 28 points29 points ago

OP never had sex.

[–]youangrybro 8 points9 points ago

What? The celebration lasted longer than the deed?

[–]Beastmonger[S] 3 points4 points ago

yep

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

I fucking love how much power goes into those high fives at the end

[–]mackinoncougars 13 points14 points ago

First time you had sex was while you were at a powerlifting competition as a little boy?

[–]DrascaL 18 points19 points ago

Seriously? Comments saying he's a douche bag/going to be a douche.

He's like 8! I don't see anything wrong with him weightlifting if he enjoys it. There is no evidence to support lifting at a young age hinders growth. In all likelihood he is just doing a fun activity with his dad, and wants to be like him. Which is made obvious with the big celebration/high 5ing.

So much swole hate, "OMG that guy lifts weights, WHAT A DICK!"

[–]smokinlawngnome 10 points11 points ago

The little boy just seems to be emulating what he seems the older/adult lifters do.

[–]ChaosDesigned 7 points8 points ago

He seemed happy as fuck though. What's wrong with that?

[–]Darth_Tard 2 points3 points ago

Don't all little boys do that? I don't see what's wrong with that.

[–]smokinlawngnome 0 points1 point ago

Never said there was anything wrong with it.

[–]clickitie_click 1 point2 points ago

There's nothing wrong with kids weightlifting, IF you can teach them how to do it properly. Watching how rounded his back was made me cringe.

I'm hoping that it doesn't matter with such a light weight, but an adult can seriously fuck up their spine like that.

[–]CuedUp 1 point2 points ago

Still if he's 65 lbs, and the bar plus those 10 lbs plates on the side are accurate, he's D/Ling bodyweight...I'm no physiology expert but that seems fairly unsafe considering the relative mechanics. Are there smaller weights for a better D/L starting positon? He doesn't even pull really...it's just standing up! His hips sure need to be lower, IMO, and rise with his shoulders...

[–]koonat 3 points4 points ago

I have a feeling that this kid could kick my ass.

[–]lightball2000 1 point2 points ago

Don't worry, with that lifting form he'll be in a back brace by the time he hits puberty.

[–]koonat 0 points1 point ago

I'm not worried about him kicking my ass in his puberty, I'm worried about him kicking my ass right now.

[–]biesterd1 6 points7 points ago

You left out the part where the dumbbell never called him again

[–]DrascaL 15 points16 points ago

You left out the part where the dumbbell barbell never called him again

[–]murraymurraymurray 12 points13 points ago

As a redditor, I can't relate to this

[–]Babkock 1 point2 points ago

Reddit: A place for the dark, horrible, twisted outcasts of society.

[–]timberwolfe -1 points0 points ago

4chan fits that bill a bit better... /b/ at least

[–]mhooligan19 6 points7 points ago

It was that quick wasn't it.

[–]UnseemlyStygian 6 points7 points ago

Watching him lift with his back like that made me cringe. God damn.

[–]MeltBanana 3 points4 points ago

It's called a deadlift...if done correctly it's extremely beneficial and prevents back injuries later in life.

Squats and deadlifts are two exercises I think everybody should do for overall health and strength.

[–]kmath_the33 2 points3 points ago

Normally your knees bend on a deadlift. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVjYNkkYfo8

[–]psychmajor411 -1 points0 points ago

I don't think he locked his knees... and he did bend them at first but neglected to lower his ass down as well, still not great form.

But that's more weight than I did when I was in high school. Theater is pure cardio though.

[–]TerranRepublic 3 points4 points ago

Yes, but the form on this was terrible. He may be a kid, but that only allows him to hurt himself even more in the long run. The power is supposed to come from the legs, your back should not actually lift.

[–]CuedUp 1 point2 points ago

Right, his hips need to go lower, and there needs to be a lot more posterior chain activation in this movement rather than just bending over and picking it up. Rippletoad sez so.

[–]pirateballoon 4 points5 points ago

Your form was bad?

[–]psychmajor411 1 point2 points ago

And he'll feel bad when he can't play sports later in life.

[–]chantistar 5 points6 points ago

SWOLE

[–]daanavitch 1 point2 points ago

Source?

[–]dedmaker 2 points3 points ago

I don't know the exact video, but I believe the kid is Noah Hulslander.

[–]Gorillaz_Noodle 0 points1 point ago

Seems to be him.

[–]part_of_me 1 point2 points ago

the first time you had sex you deadlifted your partner, dropped them, and then cockwalked around high five'ing strangers? have you had a second time?

[–]4realthistime 1 point2 points ago

Obligatory, "my, that was fast"

obligatory, Hope you didn't herniate anything...

obligatory, you were too young and those sweaty old men were wrong

[–]ExplainEverything 1 point2 points ago

His back will be broken in a few years if he keeps lifting like that.

[–]IntoTheWest 1 point2 points ago

He also lifted mostly with his back- really bad form and can hurt you.

[–]ORDub 1 point2 points ago

Is that how long it lasted?

[–]harrydickinson 1 point2 points ago

I love how he just lifts with his back then goes for hi-fives

[–]SansGray 1 point2 points ago

So you did it by yourself, then got excited and high fived all of the muscled men in the room?

Reminds me of my first time too.

[–]Zlebslehc 1 point2 points ago

This entire post is so funny. I almost can't handle it.

[–]Bluefreakbob 1 point2 points ago

After watching that video of the deadlifting guy spewing the contents of his stomach, I can no longer watch this gif.

[–]DocOTaco 1 point2 points ago

Everytime.

[–]SpacePontifex 1 point2 points ago

This kid.

[–]0011110000110011 0 points1 point ago

You were a young child lifting weights in a gym filled with older men??

[–]brosenfeld 0 points1 point ago

If you're gonna lift with your back, you're gonna have a bad time.

[–]JoshyLee 1 point2 points ago

I bet that kid's gonna be a dick.

[–]Satyral -2 points-1 points ago

Lifting like that is unbelievably bad for your back. Pulled disks, vertebrae damage, scoliosis. Always use your knees, it will save you years of pain.

I'm speaking from years of experience with really bad back pain.

[–]MeltBanana 4 points5 points ago

Deadlifting incorrectly is the worst thing you can do to your back.

Deadlifting correctly is the most beneficial thing you can do for your back.

[–]Pedro9000ish 2 points3 points ago

I can understand why you may have this viewpoint but I have to disagree. Deadlifting like this strengthens your lumbar muscles such that you actually get less back pain. It's just a case of learning correct form i.e. maintaining a neutral lower back and lifting within your limits. Again, I understand your concerns but most likely your lower back pain was caused by lifting with a rounded lower back, which is what most people do if they are not caught correctly.

[–]MasterNyx 0 points1 point ago

I always found I had a dopey grin on my face the rest of the day when I got some back in HS.

[–]hairyotter 0 points1 point ago

you were 10 years old?

[–]DanielWithoutNumbers 0 points1 point ago

what? he was dead lifting. and he did it perfect

[–]playswithknives 0 points1 point ago

Did the sex happen afterwards in the shower?

[–]lordxakio 0 points1 point ago

Did i just watch a dick in the making?

[–]311sKrunkalectic 0 points1 point ago

[–]Rstar32 0 points1 point ago

[–]GRFatman -2 points-1 points ago

Flash to 20 years from now.. kid will grow into a "muscle douchebag meme"

[–]Chuckisbossingit -1 points0 points ago

This is my favourite gif ever. I thought of it as soon as I opened a letter that said "congradulations, we would like to offer you a permanent position here at...."

[–]ThatAwkwardPerson -2 points-1 points ago
