Ad creative here - It's usually called a "credentials shot". Same sort of shot you'll see in a beer ad with a perfectly frosted glass, usually in slow motion. It's designed to make you thirsty, then and there.

Fun fact: when you see milk/liquid chocolate pouring in ads, it's actually some mixture of motor oil and artificial colors, because oil looks "smoother" when you pour it.

It makes you consume more. By pouring it quickly and filling the glass the suggestion is made to your subconscious that you should do the same.

It is the same reason that toothpaste adverts always show the person filling their brush with paste, rather than using a "pea sized amount" as per the instructions.

It might not even be orange juice. Milk is usually substituted with paint for example. It pours better and gives you that awesome splash.

When I was about four or five years old, they had a commercial on Austrian TV (very likely they showed in Germany and Switzerland as well) for 'Fruchtzwerge' (basically a kid's yogurt). In this commercial they had a slogan that roughly translated to "In every cup of Fruchtzwerge, there's two cups of milk" and they'd have an animation where they'd pour two cups of milk into one cup of the same size, without spilling over. No wonder Austrian kids score poorly on international education tests such as Pisa.

I figure it's a mental thing that makes you think "wow I was thirsty but there's enough of that so I can overflow in refreshment".

It works. Yes, we are that stupid when we don't pay attention.

It's the same as going to a used car lot, and the salesman is mistreating the car. You tell yourself "crap I better rescue this car". Same with animals at the animal rescue clinic.

There are so many sales tactics that are right in your face that talk to the back of your head (the moron in the back that does very little, but buys every damn thing).

In the simplest way I can explain it.
