He wasn't a writer in Dead Man.

[–]panda0100 9 points10 points ago

not if you ask nobody. nobody thought he was the reincarnation of William Blake.

(those must look like the weirdest sentences to someone who hasn't seen the movie.)

[–]FVBAR 7 points8 points ago

"Stupid fucking white man."

[–]three_puffs_then_go 1 point2 points ago

the evil stench of white man precedes him

[–]PandaFlavoredCondom 9 points10 points ago

accountant to be exact

[–]CtrlC_plus_CtrlV 64 points65 points ago

Pot smoker? Somebody hasn't seen fear and loathing.

[–]lurveloaveluff 27 points28 points ago

Psychotic writer probably would have worked yet again on that one.

[–]Bt5oo 14 points15 points ago

As true as that is, stating that Edward Scissorhands is an 'Emo Wolverine' is a flawed argument entirely.

[–]CrackedPepper86 13 points14 points ago

Pot dealer? Someone hasn't seen Blow.

[–]E-Step 0 points1 point ago

Well he sells weed at the beginning at least.

[–]Lamar_Scrodum 1 point2 points ago

True but the movie is called Blow. I don't think the weed was the main focus

[–]RGT42 0 points1 point ago

and it's not at all what he's known for

[–]alsorobots 0 points1 point ago

Hunter loved smoking pot. They had a "bag of grass" in their drug suitcase as they drove into Las Vegas. Granted there were about a hundred things in there worse than pot, but he still had it.

[–]Unlimited_Chuckles 1 point2 points ago

two bags of grass, actually

[–]alsorobots 0 points1 point ago

Good point, good sir.

[–]Unlimited_Chuckles 0 points1 point ago

I only commented because I read that exact passage from the book a few days ago and it's still fresh in my mind, haha. Don't forget the quarts of tequila and rum

[–]RONxPAUL 0 points1 point ago

Thompson didn't smoke weed, he breathed it.

[–]johnnytightlips2 -1 points0 points ago

This is a comment reposter, as hinted by the username

[–]Cat_on_Reddit 7 points8 points ago

Astronut?

[–]Brax611 0 points1 point ago

From "The Astronaut's Wife". A lot of people didn't like it, but I thought it was cool. One of the rare times Depp plays evil.

[–]chknoodle_ 0 points1 point ago

I might have to watch this one.

[–]chknoodle_ 0 points1 point ago

Wow, sorry to sorry I didn't notice their typo immediately, good catch.

[–]R88SHUN 7 points8 points ago

Psychotic writer #4: The Rum Diary

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It's sort of the same character as "pot smoker".

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Sort of? It's the same person.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It's the same person at wildly different periods of their life. For an actor it might as well of been a different character.

[–]JiangWei23[!] 7 points8 points ago

No 21 Jump Street? ;D

[–]Moparman396 4 points5 points ago

Indeed. Add biker/cop to the list.

[–]IveGotAHadron 4 points5 points ago

"You played saxophone at my sister's wedding, man!"

"Tough titty, I fucked her, too!"

[–]smackfrog 0 points1 point ago

And no...Libertine!

[–]lurveloaveluff 14 points15 points ago

Let's be honest, a lot of those are the same character if we really think about it.

(Which is sad because I will admit he is a great actor. Tim Burton typecasts him.)

[–]dubbledutch 2 points3 points ago

Some of these are the same character, literally. Ed Wood for example.

EDIT: I was incorrect.

[–]lurveloaveluff 3 points4 points ago

Not Ed Wood. That's an actual person he's playing! And oh god is it great.

Mad Hatter, Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd. Those are all the same.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]lurveloaveluff 6 points7 points ago

The 'Tranny' is from Before Night Falls, which I haven't seen.

He kind of approaches all the characters the exact same way. Oh I'm so weird and quirky and awkward and use my hands femininely and stagger.

[–]dubbledutch 0 points1 point ago

I do apologise. I thought I saw a pink angora sweater.

[–]lurveloaveluff 0 points1 point ago

It's an easy mistake. Ed Wood should have been the 'Psychotic Tranny (which has technically been deemed insensitive, but moving on...) Director.'

[–]CrackedPepper86 0 points1 point ago

Wasn't Ed Wood in black and white anyway?

[–]dubbledutch 0 points1 point ago

It was.

[–]Saibh 1 point2 points ago

You know what? I disagree. I feel like Johnny Depp plays characters who often reflect the same sort of dark whimsy, so it's gotten quite tiresome, but those characters in the hands of another actor might have seemed quite different.

But they're vastly different characters. The Mad Hatter is insane, and that's his main characteristic. He's the whimsical and morbid. Willy Wonka is antisocial, awkward, kind of mean, and a bit sly. Jack Sparrow is dishonorable, greedy, a drunkard, manipulative, and obfuscating. Sweeney Todd is evil, morbid, brooding, angry, hateful, and vengeful.

I think the main issues is that he mostly plays them with odd behaviors and attitudes, but not exactly as characters. They're all hard to describe because the most memorable thing about them is the way they act, not who they are.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Nope. Any quirky guy in makeup is the same character.

[–]akcheat 0 points1 point ago

"Mad Hatter, Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, Sweeney Todd. Those are all the same."

I would say that while he does play the same character in a lot of the Tim Burton movies, his Sweeney Todd is a dramatically different character than Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka, or the Mad Hatter. There is no whimsy to the performance in Sweeney Todd, and he's not crazy, just revenge driven. Sweeney Todd is probably Burton's only good movie in recent years.

[–]Nanosauromo 7 points8 points ago

I've seen this a few times, and it always bugs me that Raoul Duke isn't considered one of the psychotic writers.

[–]smackfrog 0 points1 point ago

Eccentric ≠ psychotic. Hunter Thompson makes more sense than most writers I've read.

Unless, of course, I'm also psychotic...

[–]robertluke 5 points6 points ago

Why no A Nightmare On Elm Street love?

[–]NekkidSnaku 2 points3 points ago

No one cares for ANOES anymore, and it's a damn shame.

[–]robertluke 2 points3 points ago

I still refuse to see the remake.

[–]wtfsystem 1 point2 points ago

Good, keep it that way. Sad to say, I did not make that choice....

[–]robertluke 1 point2 points ago

The idea of recasting Nancy and Freddy is just offensive enough to keep me away.

[–]wtfsystem 1 point2 points ago

Actually, Freddy wasn't that terrible, till they brought out his back story. Everyone else sucked though.

[–]robertluke 0 points1 point ago

I'm sure the performance was good. But still. No.

[–]Razzel09 4 points5 points ago

Crybaby!!!!(the greaser)

[–]wtfsystem 0 points1 point ago

I remember my mother pulled this out of one of those $5 movie boxes and brought it home. At the time, I was a stupid kid that smoked pot, and I was high when she popped it in. It really freaked me out.

[–]kutwijf 2 points3 points ago

joker? deceiver/munipulator!

pot dealer? coke dealer!

pot user? lsd user!

bookworm? curious book dealer!

sea ganster? pirate!

nior pirate? ganster!

chocolate eater? seducer!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

What movie was chocolate eater from?

[–]sweetasylum14 1 point2 points ago

Chocolat.

[–]gin_and_clonic 6 points7 points ago

Tranny is a not-so-nice word, just fyi.

[–]starberry697 4 points5 points ago

Came here to say this, if you can post two line descriptions, go for something to explain a cross dresser in more then one slur.

[–]slothenstein 2 points3 points ago

Is tranny actually seen as offensive?

[–]Inkcat 0 points1 point ago

Yes. It has a long history of being used as a slur against people from the trans community, against cross dressers (who may or may not identify as trans), and against anyone who doesn't fit into gender binary. It's equivalent to using "fag" to for gay people.

[–]slothenstein 0 points1 point ago

I always thought it was just like a shorter way of saying transsexual or transgender. Just 'cause I have tranny friends who don't mind being called a tranny and call their other tranny friends trannys.

[–]hackeralias 0 points1 point ago

Well, you are incorrect.

[–]slothenstein 0 points1 point ago

I've just never heard tranny used in a derogatory manner so I thought it was more about context than the word itself being offensive.

[–]hackeralias -1 points0 points ago

Well it's a good thing the users of Reddit have educated you on this fact, then!

[–]theBelatedLobster 1 point2 points ago

Who else cringed at "father". That film played out like an improvised high school play.

[–]ZiggyOnMars 1 point2 points ago

Robert Smith, Robert Smith, Robert Smith

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Ed Wood wasn't psychotic.

[–]alsorobots 0 points1 point ago

That's debatable.

[–]mizike 0 points1 point ago

What case could you possibly make for him being psychotic?

[–]alsorobots 0 points1 point ago

Ok, I'm making a harsh judgement, but he was, without a doubt, a very strange and disturbed individual.

[–]marshall_banana_ 2 points3 points ago

sea gangster

you mean pirate?

[–]dea4dmanwalkin 1 point2 points ago

I think you missed the joke there.

Look at the one next to it.

[–]marshall_banana_ 0 points1 point ago

ahh. yup.

[–]SavingFerris 0 points1 point ago

TIL something that's not funny, can still be a joke.

[–]dea4dmanwalkin 0 points1 point ago

You've lived a lucky life if it took you this long to learn that.

[–]MovieMonkeyMan 1 point2 points ago

Too bad every role Tim Burton now casts him as is "guy who mugs at the camera instead of actually telling any jokes and calls it acting"

[–]ciirca 1 point2 points ago

young johnny depp was the most attractive man of all time get over it

[–]royalewithnocheese 1 point2 points ago

Still doesn't match Gary Oldman

[–]Pythagoras_the_Great 1 point2 points ago

Sea Gangster/ Noir Pirate.

[–]VestigialTail 1 point2 points ago

You forgot his greatest role of all: The only guy I would go gay for.

[–]Mekkakat 1 point2 points ago

I'll be totally and respectfully honest (with my opinion):

I think Johnny Depp is a one-trick pony and plays the same character in 90% of his roles/films, which is fine for some actors, but I do not like his style. I also don't think he's nearly as good of an actor as people go on about.

That being said, I liked Edward Scissorhands...

[–]Taibo 2 points3 points ago

I don't really care for most of the Pirates of the Carribean movies but I think Depp's Jack Sparrow is a pretty brilliant creation, it's really a shame it was drowned by everyone else's subpar acting.

[–]thegoudster 1 point2 points ago

Last week in r/movies, Gary Oldman. This week in r/movies, Johnny Depp. Next week in r/movies, Gary Oldman.

[–]GentlemanTobius 0 points1 point ago

Missed out teacher in The Tourist. Well, sort of.

[–]Anderz 0 points1 point ago

[–]rexbatman 0 points1 point ago

Does anyone else think he looks like Mike Patton of Mr. Bungle in the "Chocolate Eater" pic?

[–]thisissamsaxton 0 points1 point ago

I like how he's labeled Joker for the role where he replaces Heath for some of his scenes.

[–]Always_Complainin 0 points1 point ago

Butcher, baker and candlestick maker as well.

[–]Gunney5 0 points1 point ago

Forgot about Platoon. (even though he wasnt main actor)

[–]thepony88 0 points1 point ago

not really a pot dealer/smuggler. He specialized in cocaine transport

[–]mizike 0 points1 point ago

At the beginning of the movie he was a pot dealer. I agree though, cocaine would have been more fitting (the damm movie is called Blow). Also, does he actually smoke any pot in Fear and Loathing?

[–]dunderri 0 points1 point ago

Sigh. I'm kinda over Johnny Depp, as well as Tim Burton. He's a great actor, but I'm just sick of seeing the same shit over and over again.

[–]she_is_sleeping 0 points1 point ago

ASTRO NUT :O

[–]ProfBatman 0 points1 point ago

Pot Smoker Journalist FTFY

[–]Harkinian94 0 points1 point ago

Noir Pirate? Can somebody tell me the name of the movie?

[–]JoeWang 0 points1 point ago

[–]VashXP 0 points1 point ago

You forgot undercover cop, drunk, and lizard sheriff in his roles in 21 jump street, the rum diaries, and Rango.

[–]gmw2222 0 points1 point ago

"Psychotic Chocolate Maker" and "Psychotic Tea Drinker" would have also been appropriate.

[–]JeddHampton 0 points1 point ago

The whole thing was a set up for the Emo Wolverine punch line! It caught me completely off guard too...

[–]kbruno711 0 points1 point ago

I like "Emo Wolverine"

[–]NekkidSnaku 0 points1 point ago

Sea gangster? Really?

[–]specop16 0 points1 point ago

What about lizard sheriff?

[–]RyuSythe 0 points1 point ago

Emo Wolverine, I approve.

[–]turkeyinthecorn 0 points1 point ago

Nebbish, eccentric or nebbish/eccentric.

[–]missalissa15 0 points1 point ago

I resent the titles given to most of these. "Sea Gangster?" Really?

[–]southpawE46 0 points1 point ago

No "soldier" from Platoon?

[–]mrbaryonyx 0 points1 point ago

The juxtaposition of "Sea Gangster" and "Noir Pirate" was clever. So was "joker"

[–]dj_danimal 0 points1 point ago

Whats crazy is theya re almost all the same...come little weird dude, writen by Tim Burton! Snap!

[–]ARelevantUsername_ 0 points1 point ago

Emo Wolverine

[–]kirixen 0 points1 point ago

bookworm was the best (movie and role) by far.

[–]slawthed 1 point2 points ago

what film?

[–]theBelatedLobster 4 points5 points ago

The Ninth Gate. I would not call it his best film/role but the character is enjoyable.

[–]ACrowofMurders 1 point2 points ago

The threes... THE THREES.

[–]Dashing_Pony -4 points-3 points ago

Downvote for the use of "tranny" please use "Transgender" or "Transexual" next time as the word tranny is rather offensive and should only be used when talking about the transmission of a car. Thanks.

[–]ReddJudicata -2 points-1 points ago

Lighten up, Francis.

Edit: Have you folks never seen Stripes? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OnpkDWbeJs

[–]doodoodle 0 points1 point ago

Yours is the only comment in this thread that made me chuckle. Upvote for you (but prolly won't help as I'm being downvoted as I type this).

[–]ForcedSim -1 points0 points ago

the cooky-misunderstood guy.

That's every single role he's ever been in.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

What a range... all the way from quirky lovable pirate to eccentric likeable writer.

[–]RandyGrey -2 points-1 points ago

Wasn't particularly amused until 'Emo Wolverine." Chuckled and upvoted

[–]LittleKnown 2 points3 points ago

Really? That's what got you? A leftover remnant of the whole "lol emo" thing of the early 2000's? I thought Noir Pirate was funnier.

[–]Freewheelin -1 points0 points ago

He's an ACTOR. It's his job to play a variety of different roles. And this image just demonstrates the proficiency of make-up artists and costume designers more than anything else.

It wasn't too long ago that circlejerky reposts like this were downvoted into the ground, but now it's on the front page. TDKR seems to have drawn a huge amount of new users to this subreddit, which is probably going to be more of a curse than a blessing. I'm expecting that Gary Oldman one to be reposted for the billionth time any day now.

[–]ashmawaq -1 points0 points ago

POT SMOKER? WHAT THE HELL IS A MATTER WITH YOU

[–]cemerd -1 points0 points ago

A man of many identities....Brilliant actor.
