does anyone else find this to be a really scary image?

[–]GatorWills 5 points6 points ago

Can anyone explain this to me? I remember another shipwreck picture on here with dozens of Redditors with the same fear. Is it the specific fear of drowning in the middle of the ocean? Being stuck in the boat as it sinks?

[–]DeadRat 14 points15 points ago

As a mariner, it chills me to think of this being my boat and of course the potential for loss of life (there was none in this sinking). It's really hard to describe, but there is something just really chilling about sunken ships, I suppose its the, for lack of a better word, legend that ships are living things. This one is particularly chilling as she is just below the surface almost looking up at you.

I figured someone around the water would fear this sort of stuff the least. Now that you explain this it really makes sense that it would be the opposite. I'm not around the water a lot so that probably makes sense. Interesting response, thanks.

And it looks like it has light - like someone lives there still...

[–]wheezl 0 points1 point ago

As a diver I find it interesting. Especially knowing no one was killed it looks like a playground to me. It chills me knowing that it is going to be a cold dive :)

[–]kdellz 5 points6 points ago

For some reason the oceans near the poles freak me out

[–]xj98jeep 4 points5 points ago

It freaks me out because you would just be so fucked. Car breaks down, whatever. Tow it and you're good. Boat sinks? Sucks man.

[–]ColdWeatherKarl 0 points1 point ago

Boat sinks?

In the fucking antarctic. The worst level of suck.

[–]Poop_is_Food 3 points4 points ago

Because it looks like a freakin ghost ship, duh.

[–]Daamus 31 points32 points ago

It's the ellipsis, it makes you sound bitchy.

[–]bobgiaco 0 points1 point ago

Fucking terrifying.

[–]LeftTurnDown 0 points1 point ago

I came here to say the exact same thing. I don't know why, but this picture creeps the shit out of me.

[–]KanyeBakingCookies 1 point2 points ago

I came in to say that I was greatly upset by it, and not at all by the part that it's a fancy boat. I hate that it's just suspended over what's probably an incredibly vast amount of water, of nothingness. (Needless to say I'm afraid of deep water; even 12 feet at pools freaks me out.)

[–]kepleronlyknows 2 points3 points ago

It's not suspended above anything, it's sitting on the bottom of the bay.

[–]BirdSizedMosquito 3 points4 points ago

If that freaks you out, imagine swimming and then bumping the top of it with your foot and then looking down and seeing it!

[–]Calleball 0 points1 point ago

Thing is, I once snorkeled to look at a wreck and the second I could see the thing it sent the chills down my spine. Peculiarly unsettling!

[–]gavvvy 2 points3 points ago

Yea I once went scuba diving in a lake where there was a school bus in probably 20' of water. I was looking around for it, diving a bit and coming up, super dark water.. no great chance of finding it, then boom, giant yellow box emerges from the depths, freak out slightly. Something about giant objects under water is just creepy.. especially things that have interiors, i.e. boats, busses.

[–]wintertash 0 points1 point ago

I. Hate. You.

[–]RainbowPopsicle 0 points1 point ago

Are you terrified of drowning by chance?

[–]smpx 0 points1 point ago

It's the fact that it's just submerged beneath the water, as if hidden and stalking. If we fear what's in the dark we should be terrified of what's beneath the massive, infinite, pitch black ocean.

[–]unknownmosquito 1 point2 points ago

I have a feeling space travel might make you uncomfortable.

[–]smpx 0 points1 point ago

Nightmarish. I was squirming when watching that movie about the farmer who built a space shuttle.

[–]lostPixels 0 points1 point ago

Same, it's so haunting for some reason...

[–]LJRich1971 0 points1 point ago

Yes me, but I have a thing about deep water. I don't swim in anything I can't see the bottom of. Creepy pic.

[–]aboynamedsu[S] 11 points12 points ago

More pics and a bit of context.

AdBlock+ FTW!

[–]aboynamedsu[S] 0 points1 point ago

Ha, yeah, I have it and noscript, but this time they didn't block the "picdump" thumbnails on the side, which rotate, and some are iffy. And I usually turn both off to check if a page is nsfw before linking it, because not everyone uses them.

[–]HarryLillis 0 points1 point ago

The links don't lead to the things they're supposed to lead to on that site. What is this rubbish?

That particular page on the boat is good, though.

Done. And thanks, I didn't know about /r/shipwreckporn. Subbed.

I think the thing that's most chilling (pardon the pun) about the image is the serenity of it all. The yacht is sitting there under the water in a quiet maritime grave. What you don't see is what was surely an intense time by the four crew members as they realized they were stuck and the ice was crushing in on them. The fear that they might die in near freezing waters. Perhaps the hectic frenzy of trying to save everything that was important on the ship when the Chilean navy rescued them. There's so much that surrounds this otherwise quiet picture.

Also it looks cool.

A BRAZLILIAN!? How many Zeros is that now again?

[–]11equals7 2 points3 points ago

A Blonde is watching the news with her husband when the newscaster says,

"Two Brazilian men die in a skydiving accident."

The blonde starts crying and says to her husband while sobbing

"That's horrible!!! So many men dying that way!"

Confused the husband replies "Yes dear, it is sad, but they were skydiving, and there is always that risk involved."

After a few minutes, the blonde, still sobbing, says,

"... So how many is a Brazilian?"

[–]RichLather 3 points4 points ago

I liked this joke better when it was George W. Bush reacting to the deaths of two Brazilian soldiers.

[–]c1namber 1 point2 points ago

That's a really cold fuck up.

[–]woodchuck_pie 1 point2 points ago

Sunken ships are such spooky things.

[–]I_I_II_III_IIIII 1 point2 points ago

That's our sister ship. Went down just last week with 88 souls.

[–]ClausoZ 2 points3 points ago

This is pretty haunting...

[–]BigOrangeBall -1 points0 points ago

That must have sucked.
