I love how even newspaper readers re-post.

[–]Irish_mcdick[S] 5 points6 points ago

Thanks for the link. Regardless of whether it was a hoax or not there is still the problem of people actually thinking this way in our country. I can guarantee there's some redneck in bumfuck bible belt country teaching his kids the "evils"of atheism and that we are just "pawns of satan", while also teaching them that rain is "Jesus crying".

[–]BonzaiThePenguin 62 points63 points ago

Regardless of whether it was a hoax or not there is still the problem of people actually thinking this way in our country.

So first you try using a straw man argument (the opinion of this one person – who by the way is a fundie because I said so – applies to all fundies!) while falling for an obvious hoax due to confirmation bias and not checking your sources, then upon learning of this you say it doesn't matter and stick to your beliefs? Where have I seen this behavior before...

[–]Look-over-there1234 47 points48 points ago

Did you read the entire link? It says at the bottom that a substantial portion of the readership agrees with the letter even though it was intended as a hoax.

[–]PirateOfPlayTime 3 points4 points ago

He means that there is in fact a possibility that this was not a hoax,( EX. maybe the person "admitted" it was a hoax because of all the hatemail, but she actually believes this) and that some people in america might actually think like this, regardless of whether this woman does or does not.

[–]Riku98523 7 points8 points ago

You are implying that it's the same thing Christians do the difference is there is evidence of it. There ARE people who think and even talk like this especially in the bible belt (I know I've met multiple and even have some in my family). If you don't live in the bible belt then you really have no idea. My own father (I stopped answering his phone calls because they always lead to the same thing) does nothing but constantly talk about assassinating atheist and obama. Listening to him is like being thrown into a room of people all using Poe but... it's not poe it's real.

[–]Aavagadrro 2 points3 points ago

Isnt it curious how we know people like this, mainly because we are related to them, yet the apologists come in here and say they are few and far between. They claim most christians are not like that, but when those of us who have family members that spew this hatred constantly speak up, they accuse us of all sorts of fallacies.

I have one brother who is a fundie, believes in rapture and the creation story. The rest of my family, except for one cousin's husband is what you would call moderate. Her husband is still relatively moderate, but he is a non rapture believing YEC. The hate that comes from my family directed at gays and other religions is appalling, once you are outside of it. I never noticed it when I was still inside the religion, because in my ignorance I agreed with it.

There is no shortage of christian hate, bigotry, and calls for death of people guilty only of not believing in the sky wizard or jewish lich, or of having sex with the same gender.

[–]TheLateApexLine 1 point2 points ago

Very well said. The apologists simply can not identify if they're not exposed to it themselves. I live in south Texas, in a small town. There are five churches within a half-mile of my house. The rationale shown in this rant, whether or not it's genuine, is definitely real in some parts of this planet. It's certainly real here. Perhaps it doesn't reflect the majority, but it's still a substantial portion of the voting population. And so, I too have to speak up and remind these apologists that I actually hear very similar sentiments, often.

These people do indeed exist. In numbers greater than they may wish to accept.

[–]Aavagadrro 1 point2 points ago

In the vast group of christians I have known, while serving in the military and growing up among them, it is the exceedingly rare christian that is moderate and doesnt speak of nuking the mid east or expelling atheists, muslims or other groups that arent like them. Jews are usually ok, they get a pass with the whole 1936-1945 thing.

[–]TheLateApexLine 1 point2 points ago

speak of nuking the mid east

"glass that whole area!" "turn it in to a parking lot!" "my god is better than their god!" I hear this shit regularly. This is why we will never have nice things:/

[–]Aavagadrro 1 point2 points ago

"They been fighting for centuries, they dont know anything else so we should kill em all" is the one I hear the most. As if they are the only place to have wars or fighting. It is nearly everyone, only a very few have not said anything like that to me. It did drop off a bit when they thought I was muslim for a few years, but they still said it often and wondered why I had a problem with the sentiment.

[–]Jeezafobic 0 points1 point ago

I saw this kind of reasoning yesterday when I had to dismiss some bibleists from my front porch. Sorry this got you so angry.

[–]takemehomeimdrunk 1 point2 points ago

And the snow is when our 6000 year old earth turns cold, due to Satan freezing jesus tears.

[–]corporeal-entity 0 points1 point ago

Although, the "Freedom of religion so long as it is radical Protestantism" is more accurate than people might otherwise believe. The Puritans came over here to get out from underneath the giant Anglican thumb, and to them, that's what freedom of religion meant.

[–]RustyEight 0 points1 point ago

I see some pixels there...

[–]ussr577 28 points29 points ago

We'll start our own country... ... With Scientists and homosexuals

[–]TheHairyManrilla 18 points19 points ago

Yes!

We atheists are all certified PhD scientists!

[–]ussr577 8 points9 points ago

I am only 15, and ever since I became an atheist my GPA shot way up! I am already taking the prerequisites for radiology next year. I also skipped a grade. We atheists gotta stock together though!

[–]clee-saan 2 points3 points ago

ever since I became an atheist my GPA shot way up!

Clearly if two events happened in the same time frame one must have caused the other

[–]Carbon_Dirt 5 points6 points ago

Hey, there's totally a correlation between certain religious views and that person's IQ. Just look at the Jews!

[–]wonkydonky 1 point2 points ago

Actually there is, and in the US, Hindus are on the top. (Seriously, 60% of Hindus in the US have postgraduate education.)

[–]JTHipster 0 points1 point ago

I did Not See that coming!

[–]OmegaSeven 1 point2 points ago

You must work at an IT helpdesk.

Sincerely, a long suffering level 2 sysadmin.

[–]clee-saan 1 point2 points ago

How the fuck do you know that.

[–]OmegaSeven 1 point2 points ago

I thought I recognized a brother or sister in the eternal struggle to disprove that correlation implies causation and made an educated guess.

[–]clee-saan 0 points1 point ago

Well you're pretty good. I do help desk and maintenance in house for a small company.

[–]ussr577 1 point2 points ago

Religion rises... Logic goes up... Logic goes up... IQ goes up... IQ goes up... Creative thinking goes up... Creative thinking goes up... Knowledge goes up.. Knowledge goes up... Penis size Quadruples

It's a great idea in theory, but then who funds it? And if they create a new technology, who gets access to the patents? And if they send a person into space, how do they decide who to send?

If they make a new technology and they decide that it just belongs to "humanity", and make it royalty-free, then whoever funded the program suddenly gets angry that they didn't get a return on their investment. If they only give the patent to those who contributed money, then "that's not fair because it's supposed to be a global effort." There's a thousand counter-arguments along every step, just because the nations are so far apart economically; what might seem fair to some would seem despotic to others, and what might seem fair to others might seem communistic to some, and so on. Eventually some nations would officially denounce it, and say "We'll just make our own!"

I agree that it's a good idea, I just think that there would need to be a lot of red tape and diplomacy involved.

[–]Antrikshy 1 point2 points ago

...Actually, forget the scientists.

[–]manuel_robot_cleaner 1 point2 points ago

But, I can't live there! And if I live here, I'll be lynched! Can't you tack on athiests? pls gooby

[–]ussr577 0 points1 point ago

Hehehe... We will not kill tax or rape the religious... What are we, the ROman Catholic Church!? We will simply educate then with rational thinking.

[–]Haz_Matt 1 point2 points ago

We shall call it Atheist Nation.

[–]ussr577 1 point2 points ago

Science and logic will be the base of laws...

[–]radiandf 14 points15 points ago

Being from Alaska I can tell you that the first problem is that she's from soldotna. Second the lower 48 is "America" and if you think you have a clue what it's like from your soldotna couch you are completely insane.

Then the money not always having "in god we trust on it" ...

Freedom of religion also means Islam which the writer probably despises as well as freedom from religion. I bet it irks most /redditors that her vote counts just as much as theirs.

Main problems in the world: 1) money promotes inequality 2) because of #1 we do not value intelligence.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]Excentinel 4 points5 points ago

Having been to Soldotna, I'm amazed that anyone there has that sharpness of wit.

[–]osik 3 points4 points ago

Half my family is from Soldotna, I, I avoid them a lot.

[–]JTHipster 0 points1 point ago

Sobriety of wit*

[–]trolleyfan 3 points4 points ago

But if we valued intelligence more than money, then 1) intelligence promotes inequality.

And "solutions" to that are a lot more painful than solutions to the money problem...

[–]fegd 13 points14 points ago

"You can practice any religion, but you have to believe"

Good, I wonder if she'll let me have my Wiccan coven meetings in her yard?

[–]Menace117 25 points26 points ago

They've never committed a crime but they're the reason it's so rampant.

Makes sense actually. We've never committed crimes but religious folk have committed a lot of crimes against us.

[–]Ayer99 1 point2 points ago

The victim of the hatred is the source of the violence.... Very deep concept right there....

[–]jhuang29 5 points6 points ago

Obvious troll.

[–]Ulfhedin 7 points8 points ago

Oh, I just had a great idea. All the religious people in Canada move to the states and all the Atheist/ Agnostic/ Skeptics etc. move to Canada. Then we each have our own countries and don't have to give two shits what the other one is doing, so long as we remain peaceful. In 100 years we see which country is better off.

[–]MoldyMoose 3 points4 points ago

But.... 'nda doesn't have the same ring as 'merica.

[–]verikaz 8 points9 points ago

whats worse is that someone felt this deserving of print

[–]Becka157 7 points8 points ago

Or maybe they thought it so stupidly funny, they printed it for everyone's pleasure... They should have put it in the comics section.

[–]PragueNole09 2 points3 points ago

I was born in Soldotna, AK - fuck this lady

[–]manzanero 0 points1 point ago

Didn't knew that place, I thought Soldotna was her surname, and was happily thinking her initials were A.S.S. Glad I didn't make the joke I had in mind.

[–]Mintyh3ro 6 points7 points ago

Get off our country! You're too heavy and god doesn't like fat people. That's what I got out of this article.

[–]Niteowlthethird 2 points3 points ago

Who cares, I think we should just keep fishin'.

[–]SaganScience 2 points3 points ago

Someone show this bitch a bill from 1955

[–]TheVidNerd 5 points6 points ago

Am I the only one that thinks us atheists should start our own nation? It would be amazing! We'd have scientific research, equality (I think we're all smart enough to know that), and a brilliant government. I think it's a great idea in theory.

[–]bigmill 11 points12 points ago

We did, it's called Sweden :P

[–]TheVidNerd 2 points3 points ago

Pack your bags, boys. We're going to Sweden!

[–]bigmill 0 points1 point ago

I am down!

[–]acoustic_wave 4 points5 points ago

Where would we put it and who would we trade with?

[–]warcrafter 4 points5 points ago

I believe communist countries are atheist

[–]whitefeather593 0 points1 point ago

Communist tends to be shot up by amerka LOL

[–]TheVidNerd 1 point2 points ago

We could probably get something in Canada.

[–]ChrisDjango 5 points6 points ago

LOL

I don't usually laugh at mentally retarded people...

...but when I do, they're usually extremely religious.

[–]heb0 1 point2 points ago

But I'm just a Poe boy, nobody loves me.

He's just a Poe boy, from a Poe family!

[–]amsc97 1 point2 points ago

This whole affair screams "troll"

[–]Idonteven_ 1 point2 points ago

Lol guys, come on. We all know most people are idiots. Therefore a ton of Christians are also idiots, as well as a ton of atheists, Buddhists, Muslims, etc... lets not lets the idiots represent the religions, hmm?

[–]elseppo 1 point2 points ago

hoax or not, why don't all you awesome american atheists actually really GTFO and let them get on with it? they keep their chick-fil-a, you take oreos, google, the muppets, progressive thinking, scientific literacy, neil degrasse tyson and bill motherf**ing nye. go somewhere else for a hundred years, that should be enough for them to decimate themselves. you can then go back and have weedfilled, invader-zim-watching, peer-reviewing science mashups in their gigantic churches in awesome locations. i'd join you, well, my grandkids would.

[–]Londonsawsum 1 point2 points ago

I think I heard somewhere that the government put "In God We Trust" and "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance during the cold war to piss of the Soviet Union. I doubt it, but it seems like something Americans would do.

[–]byrdbrain 1 point2 points ago

As a Christian, I hate people like this. I don't know why we can't just let people live their fucking lives without being assholes.

[–]Atheistwholikesporn 1 point2 points ago

I don't care if they have never committed a crime, atheists are the reason crime is rampant

Wut.

[–]whatsky 1 point2 points ago

This is so frustrating because no matter how much you reason and try to talk to a person like this their opinion will NEVER change..

[–]sergev 1 point2 points ago

I like how she blames atheists for crimes then acknowledges that they may not cause crimes.

[–]lovellup 1 point2 points ago

So, to all the atheist in America: Get off our country.

Balloons. Big ones. And little fans to propel us forward! We will be little atheist dirigibles, and float about two inches of the ground.

[–]InfeQtion 1 point2 points ago

Then I guess we have to open up a Pastafarian church....

[–]senoritasassypants 1 point2 points ago

Why the fuck would any self respecting newspaper find a letter like that worthy enough to publish?!?!?

[–]SomeNorwegianChick 1 point2 points ago

Holy shit, American Christians never seize to amaze me.. This is just insane. I'm sorry for all of you that have to live near those lunatics.

[–]allegrakate88 1 point2 points ago

Oh man... A nation filled with atheists? Imagine all of the scientific progress and pride celebrations... LET'S DO IT

[–]Headcap 1 point2 points ago

This might not be the most reasonable advice, but why dont you just take them up on this and just get the fuck out?

Then you could sit comfy while watching the news about how most of the intelligence in america has fled and how it's just degenerating down to oblivion

[–]ElvisAndretti 0 points1 point ago

Oh, how I wish I could. You have no idea. If you're a young person and you can do it, get out now! Once you get to middle age you'll be tied down in ways you cannot anticipate.

[–]Headcap 0 points1 point ago

come to denmark - it's lovely here, free health insurances and free education (except for a couple of books - though that can be paid though the state education support - money you get as support when you're over 18 and in education)

[–]Syggie 0 points1 point ago

I've been seriously thinking about this, a lot. But where should you move? I agree society without religion would be much better, but is religion SUCH a problem to your every-day life that you need to move? In what ways?

It happened to me, I mean, I broke up with my gf because of religion (I'm an atheist), but what are the benefits to you daily life if you go to live to a real secular country?

[–]ElvisAndretti 1 point2 points ago

I don't think there are any purely secular countries, but there are plenty that are not being actively steered towards theocracy. My problem was finding a place that was free of 'mericun influence and there are not many. Add to that being over 50 and your choices are very limited.

[–]Syggie 0 points1 point ago

Did you stay in America or did you kind of find it? What would you look for if you had the chance to move nowadays?

This is relevant to my interests :p.

[–]ElvisAndretti 1 point2 points ago

We are still here and contemplating going expat if we can ever retire, which seems unlikely. I would like to live somewhere that at least tries to live up to their ideals. In the USA whatever rights you THINK you have can be made to disappear when a politician utters the magic words "war on drugs" or "war on terror".

Someplace that spends more on education and social welfare than it does on killing people would be nice.

[–]Syggie 0 points1 point ago

Right here a 24 year-old guy thanks you solely for existing and writing this.

[–]ElvisAndretti 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for that.

The other thing, between us my wife and I have four kids, two in grad school, so we have some responsibilities yet to deal with.

[–]Syggie 0 points1 point ago

Oh, I agree, it's just not that easy.

On my side, I would like to start investigating new places. I live in Miami right now but I'm not quite confortable (and I'm south american) with the way life is happening here. I work in the TV industry so I can adapt that easily.

Where do you think these criteria you are/were looking for would fit the most in Europe? (or Japan maybe?)

[–]ElvisAndretti 0 points1 point ago

Denmark, Sweden and Holland are all worth looking at. Great Britain would have been easiest, but they tend to do as the USA tells them Afghanistan anyone?)

[–]julianne7366 1 point2 points ago

Umm.. We do believe.. We believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.. Any other devout pastafarians out there who could never turn our backs on the great noodly one.

[–]smatwork 3 points4 points ago

Ignorance is bliss.

[–]LandSharkLandShark 1 point2 points ago

You think that the person who wrote this knows that "In God We Trust" was not always on our money?

[–]Owlsrule12 2 points3 points ago

THE STUPID, IT BURNS

[–]hardrock703 1 point2 points ago

Ironically, she says "this country has freedom of religion" and right after that, she says "you must believe".

[–]Meperson7 1 point2 points ago

I actually felt my brain cells die from reading this post.

[–]CARoth 1 point2 points ago

Ok, Canada it is.

[–]GreenSteel 1 point2 points ago

Come to Canada, eh! We'll all be happy here! The thiests can have America, and when they ruin the country, we A) Expand Canada, and become the biggest country in the world [ ;) ], or B) Re-establish the US. I like A.

[–]Whatdafuuuuk 0 points1 point ago

I love how it says " if you don't beileve in god, then get out of this country" at te end of the 1st paragraph. Then the very next sentence says "the United States was founded on freedom of religion"

[–]EarthExplodes 0 points1 point ago

I love that the next article seems to be suggesting they just keeping fishing a river until all the fish are gone. Paints a good picture of the type of readership this paper gets.

[–]Cleanbeats 0 points1 point ago

What if we actually left to move to Canada and watch america slip behind, and we won't give two shits. Lets say screw you guys i'm going to Canada.

[–]warcrafter 0 points1 point ago

screw you guys i'm going to Canada home

[–]Cleanbeats 0 points1 point ago

we don't live in canada yet

[–]warcrafter 0 points1 point ago

southpark reference

[–]elarq 0 points1 point ago

Let's revisit the last sentence, "I don't care if they have never committed a crime, atheists are the reason crime is rampant."

This lack of logic goes right up there with creationism and Noah's ark

[–]cutrateslashjob 0 points1 point ago

Thankfully this letter was a hoax. For a second there I thought I was going to have to start worshiping Satan.

[–]WoollyMittens 0 points1 point ago

It's funny how those accusing atheists of closed mindedness and ignorance, can never quite articulate exactly what atheists are supposed to be ignorant of.

[–]Pianotico 0 points1 point ago

That last bit makes no sense whatsoever. How on earth are non criminal atheists more responsible than criminal Christians? .21% of those in prison are atheists even though 15% of the United states has "no religion". Craziness.

[–]Zephire14 0 points1 point ago

If i do remember, back in the day, our AMERICAN Currency did not have 'In God We Trust' on it.

[–]monkey_king10 0 points1 point ago

If anyone hears this remind the person who said it, that if you got rid of all of Americas atheists you would lose around 97% of the scientific community, and only 3% of the prison community. these values are approximate

[–]Xlchupalx 0 points1 point ago

"get off of our country" dont even know what to say.

[–]Deutoto 0 points1 point ago

The clergy ... believe that any portion of power confided to me [as President] will be exerted in opposition to their schemes. And they believe rightly: for I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man. But this is all they have to fear from me: and enough, too, in their opinion."

Thomas Jefferson on this.

[–]ldex0596 0 points1 point ago

Get off of our country

Like it's a stage or something..

[–]Piclonix 0 points1 point ago

Take the om out of "freedom of religion" and the phrase changes. Some people just do not understand that the United States was founded on Enlightenment ideals.

[–]Souper_Matt 0 points1 point ago

HEY ATHEISTS:

[–]StrictClubBouncer 0 points1 point ago

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,.."

Their "freedom of religion" quote they like to spit in our faces doesn't even exist.

Break those glasses! God will get you home safely on that dark stormy night! You were in a car crash and can no longer walk? Fuck those physical therapists who are only doing satans work!

whenever arguing which another atheist about whether or not "In God We Trust" should be an issue for us, show them this and they will see that it is an issue.

[–]charlie_darwin32 0 points1 point ago

[–]h34dyr0kz 0 points1 point ago

for a group of people that claims to be so smarty, satire often goes right over the head of most of r/ atheism

[–]akppve 0 points1 point ago

definitely the words of a brilliant and independent mind....

[–]Rafen325 0 points1 point ago

Last time I checked, freedom of religion meant you can follow whatever religious beliefs you have.

[–]whileyouwereliving 0 points1 point ago

would love to see your country without atheists. A country full of uneducated products of incest (and some moderate, but then desperate christians, I assume) that doesn't even know how to build a fucking fridge or something. Awesome.

You can come to Germany, we'll send our Nazis and Salafists over for exchange.

[–]JefffKrupa 0 points1 point ago

Not meaning to speak down to anyone, or be demeaning whatsoever. This is complete bullshit (a fact that has been covered many times in these comments). However, we have to remember that atheists stand not only for disproving god, but for equal human rights. We need to accept them, even though we sorely disagree with them.

[–]greatestbass 0 points1 point ago

What if I told you, even fundies think that is stupid...

[–]TacoDinosaurs 0 points1 point ago

This subreddit makes me want to punch things out of the sheer frustration of how ignorant people can be.

[–]NozzALa 0 points1 point ago

You heard her, get OFF this country...heh.

[–]possosso 0 points1 point ago

No Alice Shannon, its closed minded people like you that ruined this country. Seriously what will praying in school achieve, besides brainwashed kids who turn to bullying when their classmate is different?

[–]Jmr333 0 points1 point ago

I'm sincerely hoping that the newspaper printed that letter just for shits and giggles...

[–]ofWingsAzure 0 points1 point ago

Just sayin'.

[–]Diknak 0 points1 point ago

I don't care if they have never commited a crime, atheists are the reason crime is rampant.
