pride of baghdad

[–]SprunkMaster 42 points43 points ago

Thank you good being, I saw a few screen caps of this book a year ago or so and forgot the name. I've been meaning to buy it. And off to Amazon I go.

[–]MrMelty 21 points22 points ago

It's a good read and if you get it hardcover it looks really good on a shelf.

[–]Unfunny_Asshole 14 points15 points ago

So the text bubbles are shopped? :(

[–]MrMelty 21 points22 points ago

I'm afraid so. In the book the giraffe is preaching like some sort of dickfart and the lion yells "move!' after the giraffes head explodes.

P.S has anyone ever told you, you are an Unfunny Asshole?

[–]Unfunny_Asshole 11 points12 points ago

Thanks for the reply. I get that all the time. Almost 50% of my posts have that response. I don't know why people keep on calling me that. It hurts my feelings.

[–]MrMelty 3 points4 points ago

I would love to say sorry or something to make you feel better but I just cant help it, you are an Unfunny Asshole and I just feel the need to tell you.

[–]Leiara -1 points0 points ago

Overkill.

[–]Ryanair -3 points-2 points ago

Look at my username. No matter what I write I always get some kind of "Why is an airline answering?! LOLOLZZ!!"

I hate it. For some people, everything is a novelty.

[–]WittyUsername816 0 points1 point ago

Why did its head explode?

[–]ChanTheMan36 0 points1 point ago

It was shot with something, I forget what exactly.

[–]MrMelty 1 point2 points ago

The zoo is being bombed.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Well, the giraffes text isn't eddied. It says الله أكبر which is a common Arabic phrase with the literal translation of"God is greater" or "God is [the] greatest". I think the comic was originally in Arabic, but I could be wrong.

[–]GrooveCombo 1 point2 points ago

So it says Allahu Akbar.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, that's the pronunciation (as close as we can get with our alphabet anyway).

[–]MrMelty 3 points4 points ago

Mmmmk. Well in the book that I am holding in my hands the giraffe says "The heavens are opening! The old ones have heard our prayers! they're coming to--" So it is edited.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Hmm, I thought it was originally in Arabic and I knew the giraffe had said something preachy in the English version so I assumed it wasn't edited. But, after looking into it I can't find anything saying it was in Arabic, so I'm probably wrong.

[–]MrMelty 0 points1 point ago

Well it makes sense why it would be. I had to go find my copy of the book and double check.

[–]SprunkMaster 15 points16 points ago

DAMN I forgot to check for hardcover before I ordered. Son of a bitch I love hard books.

[–]Carbon_Dirt 41 points42 points ago

Heh... I bet you like... umm... hard... and umm... something... joke.

[–]Mileskitsune 14 points15 points ago

its okay boy, you can come back to my place and we'll smooth it over ok :)

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

there's a pill for that
im what you call a speed reader
i love a good, deep read
i fucked a book

[–]bcgpete 6 points7 points ago

fucking bibliophile

[–]MrMelty 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, that's to bad. It sure is pretty.

[–]SomeTakezo 0 points1 point ago

Definitely. Still have a copy I borrowed years ago from an ex-girlfriend.

[–]Desireei 7 points8 points ago

It's pretty sad. Fair warning.

[–]rustang2 2 points3 points ago

Yup great read.

[–]Karjapuskuri 1 point2 points ago

Indeed it is

[–]rustang2 0 points1 point ago

You ever read y the last man?? If I'm not mistaken same writer.. Good shit.

[–]Raistlinseyes 1 point2 points ago

If you like Brain K Vaughn, check out Y: the last man. Quality series.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

I thought that Y was one of his worst books to be honest.

Ex Machina is far better if you like superheroes or politics.

[–]maceireann 1 point2 points ago

It's really good!

[–]PhuckYoPhace -1 points0 points ago

I find BKV to be overrated sometimes, but this is not one of those times. Upfleet for you

[–]Grindhouse256 0 points1 point ago

Loved this book!

[–]Oblivion_The_Legend 1 point2 points ago

Wicked good, but shit ending to the story.

[–]Chinchillin10 0 points1 point ago

Very good comic.

[–]dylantrevor 1 point2 points ago

Such a good graphic novel.

[–]yeahyuuuh 0 points1 point ago

Great graphic novel

[–]Katch00 0 points1 point ago

Nothing else to do here. Not as good as We3.

[–]bostonT 0 points1 point ago

Book was amazing, highly recommended. It left me in an emotional state of shock for a whole day.

[–]Wombat_King 55 points56 points ago

If you read it right to left it's about a giraffe with phenomenal healing powers.

[–]MozartTheCat 4 points5 points ago

And the expression on his face in the lefthand frame fits this story better.

[–]Proditus 2 points3 points ago

Hmmm, the Arabic language is meant to be read from right to left...no wonder the terrorists believe they're doing the right thing.

[–]savageboredom 0 points1 point ago

The first time I ever saw this image it was mirrored and implied that the giraffe was a Time Lord.

[–]CtrlC_plus_CtrlV 75 points76 points ago

No, this is part of a beautifully written and drawn graphic novel called pride of baghdad. The giraffe was hit by an American bomb.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

I cry at the turtle part :(

The whole book is excellent except for one weirdly drawn panel in the bear fight that just pulls me out of the story and makes me remember I'm reading a book, a book with one little flaw :(

Edit: :( :( :( :(

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

I did the edit because I realized I had a sad face at the end of both sentences... :(

[–]coolface153 23 points24 points ago

The giraffe was hit by an American bomb.

lol even north korean anti-American propaganda is less dramatic

[–]Recall_Coordinator 13 points14 points ago

Do you have any idea how many innocent giraffes were slaughtered in Iraq due to drone strikes? You imperialist.

[–]laurenhaylett 3 points4 points ago

When you said "imperialist," I was reminded of "Shooting an Elephant" by Orwell.... The works have a lot in common, now that I think about it.

[–]NMW 0 points1 point ago

Except that the elephant had gone mad and killed some dudes. The giraffe was calmly hoping for freedom.

The lions had a much more complicated story... to say nothing of the bear :/

[–]laurenhaylett 0 points1 point ago

Ah, true. And the part about the bear is just weird...

[–]jappleseed12 0 points1 point ago

lol even north korean anti-American propaganda is less dramatic

I just died of laughter. Thanks. I needed that.

[–]need_more_chaos 4 points5 points ago

Really? I thought he sneezed.

[–]churro89 1 point2 points ago

Looks like a suicide bombing to me. Please explain the context better?

[–]Rosenkrantz_ 1 point2 points ago

It'sa Giraffe whose head explodes.

It's just that awesome and needs no further questioning.

But google for 'Pride of Baghdad' - it's agraphic novel.

[–]Faroutman101 0 points1 point ago

That's copied word for word off the top comment from the first time this was posted. Great job.

[–]tessy292 21 points22 points ago

For everyone: The giraffe's saying, "Allah akbar," which roughly translates to "God is great."

[–]XaroXhoanDucksauce 17 points18 points ago

I thought he was sneezing. :/

[–]Chekonjak 6 points7 points ago

That's Allach'u akbar. Easily confused.

[–]zombitez 2 points3 points ago

*God is the greatest actually.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]jonnie5 11 points12 points ago

your reading skills in arabic are terrible if you don't recognize Allah.

[–]martymcflyer 6 points7 points ago

nope its allah akbar

that is not a sheen rather it is a lam connected to an alif.

[–]ndchristie 0 points1 point ago

yeah, it doesn't even have the right number of lines to be ASH --- clearly ALLH even if the name of the lord wasn't already a very obvious form.

even if it was a shin...there's no diacritic that would make an "o" sound, so it wouldn't be "Esh-ho," and Eshahu (closest possible pronunciation to what he suggested) would make some sense, except that اشه isn't a word in Arabic to begin with, and if it was it would probably be Ashah.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

Jiraffe.

[–]Therealme9 18 points19 points ago

I actually read this book in my 7 th grade reading class. I like the part where the lions raped after losing her eye.

[–]Whirlingderpfish 23 points24 points ago

What

[–]strikervulsine 4 points5 points ago

Yeeep, gangraped even.

It was by other lions if it makes you feel better.

[–]Whirlingderpfish 2 points3 points ago

The part of me that imagined humans doing the raping says yes, but rape is rape... O_o

[–]FireAndSunshine 3 points4 points ago

Many species rely on rape to maintain reproduction numbers high enough to assure the continued survival of their species.

[–]harr1s 0 points1 point ago

Source? Would like to read

[–]strikervulsine 0 points1 point ago

For science?

[–]FireAndSunshine 0 points1 point ago

In 2007, research suggested that in the Acilius genus of water beetles (also known as "diving beetles"), an "evolutionary arms race" between the genders means that there is no courtship system for these beetles. "It's a system of rape...."

[–]HardBoiledDragonite 1 point2 points ago

This isn't your lucky day kid.

[–]cboogie 1 point2 points ago

Oh you missed a p. He rapped. :/

[–]Asshole_Patrol 0 points1 point ago

This actually happens in the story.

[–]chinaskiii 7 points8 points ago

hehe geraffes

[–]sacrificialvirgin 0 points1 point ago

My thoughts exactly. I doubt I will ever see another giraffe without thinking of this.

[–]zeronullzero 0 points1 point ago

This. I just saw that post for the first time yesterday. First thought was "long horse".

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Dude, you just ganked this page from Pride of Baghdad. Any picture is going to look silly if you take it completely out of context like that.

[–]antoinebugleboy -4 points-3 points ago

Am I the only one who thought this entire book was silly?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Yep.

[–]dophie23 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was too :/ it's like a furries wet dream...

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Is this the graphic novel about the lions who get loose during a raid?

[–]nunobo 3 points4 points ago

Yes, It is Pride Of Baghdad about the Baghdad zoo during the US invasion.

[–]mwishosimba 1 point2 points ago

I highly recommend it. Very nicely drawn and written.

[–]teklord 4 points5 points ago

WARNING: this comic can make you cry.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pride_of_Baghdad

[–]SenatorIvy 2 points3 points ago

I'm surprised the "IS THAT AN ASS?!" panel hasn't been used more around the internet.

Pride of Baghdad is a great comic. The goddamn ending is sad as fuck.

[–]mikeblack265 2 points3 points ago

The war on terror hits the Pride Land.

[–]Bixby66 0 points1 point ago

How did a giraffe learn to speak arabic? or does giraffanese sound lika arabic to lions?

[–]rex-manning-day 2 points3 points ago

I read this book in my Literature for Young Adults class at my University. It's a very good graphic novel. A short book in the POV of some animals that escaped from a zoo in Baghdad back in 2003. A true story, only they don't talk. The giraffe is like this righteous animal praising god or something before he dies.

[–]llbean 2 points3 points ago

Im pretty sure he sneezes and then, well, you can see the rest.

[–]MrBossin 0 points1 point ago

I think wat is more appropriate

[–]Calber4 0 points1 point ago

"Allahu Akbar!"

In case you were wondering.

[–]int3rwebz3 0 points1 point ago

I knew it!

[–]dophie23 0 points1 point ago

Spoiler! All the lions die b/c us soldiers kill them. There I just saved you 15 minutes of trading a political furry graphic novel.

[–]VisitChechnya 5 points6 points ago

"Ana Kabir"??? I'm big?

[–]SPRM 21 points22 points ago

It's actually 'Allahu akbar' -> Allah is great.

[–]VisitChechnya 19 points20 points ago

My Arabic is atrocious.

[–]basherrr 9 points10 points ago

[–]unluckyBastard69 4 points5 points ago

[–]madmonkeymud 0 points1 point ago

The giraffe has a long neck?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]dan2802 -1 points0 points ago

How much CoD have you played recently?

[–]SPRM 0 points1 point ago

It is a very common phrase throughout the Arabic world that by itself has absolutely zero to do with terrorists and people blowing themselves up.

[–]SenatorIvy 0 points1 point ago

"Ok Connery can read lips!" "...I'm German the yellow frog...?" what? "Bozo the piano chive?!" I used to be good at this!

[–]slapmesilly69 2 points3 points ago

There is also a lion rape scene in that book. Check it out...

[–]dhicks3 0 points1 point ago

Both humans and giraffes have 7 vertebrae in their necks, which means that they are way huger than depicted here.

[–]craigory83 -1 points0 points ago

Punch line in the title! /s

[–]MT_Flesch 1 point2 points ago

allahu akbar?

[–]Unshavenhelga 1 point2 points ago

It's out of a comic about the lions of Baghdad.

[–]laurenhaylett 1 point2 points ago

"The Pride of Baghdad"... It really is quite beautiful, and a quick read, but you will cry allllll over yourself. Just a warning. There is an English edition.

[–]samuraialien 0 points1 point ago

Thank you.

[–]dude8462 1 point2 points ago

Its pride of baghdad, here is a english version of the pic http://www.monitorduty.com/imgs/oldimages/pride3-thumb.jpg

[–]stardustx12 1 point2 points ago

I lol'd hard at the lion.

[–]Captain_Kuhl 1 point2 points ago

Wow. Giraffes make terrible suicide bombers.

[–]TylerHunter04 0 points1 point ago

SUPER ENEMA!!!!!!!!

[–]grimmzilla 0 points1 point ago

The Giraffe could not have said that... Giraffes have no vocal cords.

It was.....interesting.

[–]iamapsychoandwillmak 0 points1 point ago

Oh ye! This made me utter WTF will all my expression

[–]HipHoppin 0 points1 point ago

Imagine if this actually happened in the Lion King

[–]Hoppux 1 point2 points ago

yeah, it did say "alahu akbar". for those wondering, it means god is greater, not god is great. to say great would mean that eventually, something would be greater. god is greater means no matter what, god will always be greater. I'm from Baghdad.

[–]Tehtacticalpanda -1 points0 points ago

Yes, finally people have realized the evilness of the giraffes.

[–]DeadManWalk -1 points0 points ago

[–]Monstoner 0 points1 point ago

That's a part of the comic book "Pride of Baghdad". I don't know where you found just that bit, but seriously, try to find the source of something before posting it, especially when it's a set of panels.

[–]shan849225 0 points1 point ago

Is this the graphic novel about the lions who get loose during a raid.

[–]gonesnake 0 points1 point ago

Scanners + Lion King

[–]Asshole_Patrol 1 point2 points ago

This is from Pride of Baghdad, it's actually a really good story. In this scene there's a bombingrun being done and the Zoo was near. The story is told from the point of view of lions that escape into Baghdad after the bombing run.

[–]salehalt 1 point2 points ago

Translation:

God is the greatest!

...

مع

[–]beau669479 0 points1 point ago

Yes, It is Pride Of Baghdad about the Baghdad zoo during the US invasion.

[–]winwithgywnn 0 points1 point ago

ok, now that I know it's in a zoo that makes more sense, out of context it's all a bit of a 'wtf' thing. First I thought it was a weird suicide bombing animal thing then all this pride of baghdad talk made it more confusing, I was pretty sure Iraq wasn't well known for it's thriving population of lions and giraffes.

[–]lookatmyrangsmyrangs 1 point2 points ago

First part says "God is the greatest"

[–]XKairiX 1 point2 points ago

[–]frenzyprime 0 points1 point ago

This drawing is very accurate. Giraffes often explode like that in the wild. I learned about this in my biology class.

Arabic, not Islamic. Important distinction in that not all Arabs are Muslims and very few Muslims are Arabs.

[–]VisitChechnya 8 points9 points ago

I would say "The majority of Muslims are not Arab" rather than "very few Muslims are Arabs."

[–]Crimsonbob 0 points1 point ago

Not sure what your definition of "very few" is, but a couple quick google searches seem to indicate that approx 15% of all muslims are arab. While not the highest percentage, it is still a significant amount.

[–]Phage0070 -4 points-3 points ago

But a great many Arab Muslims explode after exclaiming that their god is great.

[–]carlosmachina 1 point2 points ago

And what is the freaking giraffe?

[–]LeckMich 0 points1 point ago

"ALLAHU AKBAR"!!

[–]evanbartlett1 0 points1 point ago

The giraffe is saying "Allah(u) akbar(u)," which is a common thing for suicide bombers to yell before blowing themselves up. It means 'God is the greatest.'

[–]a3headedmonkey 1 point2 points ago

Saying it's a common thing for suicide bombers to say is kinda like saying "Amen" is what Christians say right before they rape children...

[–]shelbymarie00 -1 points0 points ago

He's a suicide bomber giraffe.

[–]The_Derek -2 points-1 points ago

[–]YourbestfriENT -4 points-3 points ago

Hmm, must be Muslim.... I mean a suicide bomber.
