As someone who is 38 and currently registered for precalc and econ 101, I know what you mean, but GTFO my lawn!

[–]drocks 148 points149 points ago

yaa 32 here attending college. the worst part was in my CALC class.... I did a project with some kid and found out he was a 16 year old running start student from the high school. I was like sweet Im old enough to be my calc project partners fucking mother.

Also, when I attended the orientation to start at the University this fall with my 20 year old co-worker, someone asked if I was her mother. FML

[–]Eurynom0s 53 points54 points ago

That's still better than being me (23) with my mom (50-ish) and sitting across a desk from a leasing agent who was in her late 50's or early 60's and her referring to me as my mom's husband. And then having the leasing agent totally defuse the situation with the comment of, "Older women need loving too."

[–]drocks 6 points7 points ago

lol! that would be awkward

[–]Igosuki 88 points89 points ago

I wish I'd had a project with a 32 year old in college, would've hit so hard on you.

[–]accidentallywut 150 points151 points ago

don't kid yourself, you'd just sit there and think of all the clever ways you could hit on her, and then never do it.

[–]ty94 8 points9 points ago

As an early highschool grad/17 year old in college.... Yes thats how it went for me. :[

[–]forumpooper 3 points4 points ago

You can base this on age alone? she could be the exact opposite of what you define as physically sexy.

[–]Lampmonster1 114 points115 points ago

36 here. I feel you bro.

[–]appletart 60 points61 points ago

Hey hey! 36 too and 2 years into engineering! What are you studying?

[–]Lampmonster1 52 points53 points ago

Chemistry theoretically, though you wouldn't know it by the classes I have to take.

[–]lazybrouf 60 points61 points ago

Gen Ed is crap. What's the point? In Europe you go directly into the field you want. This is because they teach all that stuff in High school, where it belongs.

Edit: I think some misunderstand me. I'm all for a well rounded education, but there is no reason not to introduce students to a more diverse education in high school and then focus more in college. As for AP exams, I really think those sorts of tests should be required and provided free of charge.

[–]Liam_Galt 92 points93 points ago

They teach it in high school here as well, but they also teach it again in college. In general the college courses cover more content/more difficult content, but it could definitely be taught at the high school level (it just isn't since public education is hilarious in the US).

It is possible to take AP tests in high school and place out of many Gen Ed requirements. However, some universities don't accept this credit and make you take their Gen Ed courses anyway. They do this because money.

[–]buddhabro 26 points27 points ago

money :c

[–]forthewar 28 points29 points ago

It's the idea of a "well-rounded" education. It's good to have an idea of other academic disciplines, I think, anyway.

[–]The_Doppleganger 10 points11 points ago

Some of the greatest ideas have come from people who were specialists in one field and got an idea from another field that they had some grasp on.

[–]be_mindful 2 points3 points ago

why didn't you take your Gen Eds at a community college?

[–]rascilon 11 points12 points ago

Another 36 year old college student reporting in.

[–]Busterdouglas 23 points24 points ago

I went at 25. It blew my mind when my classmates were talking about sneaking beer to their dorm rooms.

[–]Aynielle 8 points9 points ago

Just went back at 29, and listening to them try to plan their weekends around whose parent's were out of town was pretty mind-blowing as well.

[–]windsostrange 6 points7 points ago

Is there a subreddit for folks like us?

[–]Dont_stop 4 points5 points ago

30 and starting my senior year of Mech. Eng. in a couple weeks. I am the old man compared to my classmates.

[–]udbluehens 13 points14 points ago

105 here. Back in my day schools werent invented so I had to wait until now.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

I sympathize with your issue of age and trying to relate to the next generation, but I think you'll like Jean-Luc Picard.

[–]CygnusX1 7 points8 points ago

40, graduating in December. Been chipping away at it since 1991.

[–][deleted] 52 points53 points ago

If it makes you feel better, there are plenty of people who start medical school in their late 30's, and finish with training and residency in their 40's.

Remember the road you take does not matter, it's if you get to that destination that matters.

Unless you drive an american car, fuel economy LOL

[–]sunnydaize 17 points18 points ago

Really?? I'm thinking about applying (finally) at age 28. Do you know if it would ever be remotely possible to have a kid while being a resident? This comment really made me feel very hopeful, so thank you for that. :)

[–]34_yr_old_med_stud 20 points21 points ago

I have 2 kids and will start medical school in 3 weeks. I'm 34.

[–]lady_in_el_lago 7 points8 points ago

You are my hero! I'm 28 and just started on my road to med school after having initially pursued nursing. It's nice to know that with hard work, my dreams aren't impossible to fulfill.

[–]DevilishlyDetermined 4 points5 points ago

Dominate that shit! For your kids of course!

[–]donnamatrix79 4 points5 points ago

I have a friend who had her first kid while an intern, and is due to have her second in a few months -- I think she's almost done her residency. Her husband is also just starting his residency. I don't know if she would recommend it, but it's apparently doable. :) (They're both in their early-to-mid 30s, btw.)

[–]be_mindful 9 points10 points ago

don't worry man, here is something Randy Pausch once said:

I worked fewer hours after I got married and I got more done. And I was always fascinated in graduate school that the people who graduated fastest with their Ph.D.s were the people who had a spouse and kids. I said, how can that be? That's like a built-in boat anchor. You've got all these other demands on your time and I'm a single guy and I've got all the time in the world and that's the problem. I approach it like I've got all the time in the world so my time isn't precious.

kids bring a kind of clarity to your life. i never understood why managers always liked people with kids before i had one myself. now i know. when you have a kid you play for keeps in a way you never did before. you just work harder. and thats what you have to do. be in the moment, stick to your plan (make a plan too) and work hard. at work and on yourself. that last bit is really important. don't forget to stop and enjoy yourself.

[–]I_FIST_INSANITY_WOLF 7 points8 points ago

Managers like it because people with responsibilities feel the pressure more when they're turning the screws to get more work out of you.

[–]Waterboyeee 6 points7 points ago

< 30 y/o struggling with my last two math classes (which I put off till the end like a moron)

:)

[–]matrim611 2 points3 points ago

And I thought I would feel weird going back to school at 26. You have just made me feel way better about being a freshman again. Thanks Old Person!

[–]iasked1iam1 1 point2 points ago

I am 34 and returning to school after 9 years out of it. I have to take a 1 credit Physical Education class in order to get my degree. Yes, gym. How ridiculous is that?

I am majoring in Mathematics with a concentration in secondary education, and I am terrified of getting into a Differential Equations/Advanced Calculus class after taking my last Calculus class in 2001. I have always done pretty well with Math, but it's not like the Chain Rule and multi-variable integration just sticks with you after so many years of not sitting in a class room.

[–]juicybananas 1 point2 points ago

33 here. I graduated last year. Had to take the Intro to Big Boy Work class myself. I bet you're excited to get letters in the mail that are addressed "To the Parents of ____ ____"

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

I graduated at 35. I told all the kids the A's were in the front of the class. No one believed me, until I showed them my A's. From the front row.

[–]darthjochen 208 points209 points ago

At 25, you'll be the oldest "young" person and your class, and the youngest "old" person.

Source: 25 year old college junior.

[–]BumCum 196 points197 points ago

Perfect, so you can fuck everyone without it being weird!

[–]rsheahen 114 points115 points ago

And cum in their bums if you play your cards right!

[–]rippedlikejesus 49 points50 points ago

This guy knows what's up.

[–]AugustusSavoy 8 points9 points ago

Fellow 25 year old continuing student here to confirm.

[–]iamiamwhoami 22 points23 points ago

25/2+7=19.5...ehh lets just call it 18.

[–]zomglings 26 points27 points ago

It's cool. I always round down to the nearest 18.

[–]karlbarl 1 point2 points ago

I feel the same way man

[–]chauna 1 point2 points ago

As a 25 3/4 year old senior, I can attest to this. You're old enough to fuck your TA's, but young enough to fuck your classmates.

[–]chaoticgeek 62 points63 points ago

Get used to having to take stupid classes. I was in computer programming degree program my school offered and I was required to take a class where the first chapter in the book was actually how to turn on a desktop computer and monitor. Then a course about MS Office with a bunch of business and nursing majors.

[–]drocks 14 points15 points ago

lol I had to take a class just like that at the start of my CS program too. Im like please tell me if you are majoring in CS you at least know how to start a fucking computer. We even had a lab simulation(that you did on a computer) we had to do online for turning on a computer.

Edit: Decided to go through and find my homework from the unit that we had to simulate starting and shutting down a computer. We actually had to write a short narrative of what the lab covered, what we learned and how it relates to the unit. Fun times trying to write seriously about learning to start a computer and what we learned from it...

For the How it relates to this unit(The class was Intro to Computer Concepts btw): I think that the lab is the foundation to the rest of not only the unit but the course. Step 1. Know how to turn on your computer. If we can't get that far, the rest is going to be difficult

Can't believe I had to spend 100 bucks on software to simulate stupid shit like this.

[–]davvblack 3 points4 points ago

lol. Who the fuck makes those? I guess they could be used if you shuffle in a few hundred inmates to a lab of already-on computers... but that relies on a premise of rehabilitation, and is already nonsense.

[–]tyme 24 points25 points ago

That sounds like an Information Sciences and Technology major. I called it "comp sci for morons".

And yes, I have a BS in it.

[–]Ayaq 13 points14 points ago

I've always described IST as "Computer Science without the science."

[–]tyme 2 points3 points ago

Also a valid description.

[–]foreskin_piss_bomb 153 points154 points ago

I'm 40. I have to be sure I don't schedule classes where I might run into my daughter.

Take advantage of the idiot freshman.

[–]Biomonkeynofap 146 points147 points ago

You're 40. Your username. Your daughter goes to the same campus as you.

You seem like one hell of a character.

[–]fatguybayonet 75 points76 points ago

I hope the OP goes to the same school, takes this guys' advice, and ends up banging foreskin_piss_bombs daughter.

[–]EvilFrostop 7 points8 points ago

Oh...

AND THATS HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER

[–]MrBlahStrikesAgain 10 points11 points ago

[–]KeyserSoze96 5 points6 points ago

You just created a tv show

[–]jc316 15 points16 points ago

Just don't go to any frat parties where you might run into her. That would be way worse.

[–]feddz 46 points47 points ago

Don't sleep with any girls with the lights off either..

[–]farfle10 26 points27 points ago

honey...?

dm;hs?

[–]DrVoodoo 10 points11 points ago

Nope. This time it matters.

[–]ObviouslyIntoxicated 22 points23 points ago

Is this you?

[–]foreskin_piss_bomb 77 points78 points ago

Haha. I'm cooler than my daughter (she's a pseudo-hipster/Tilly catalogue type) and told her not to be hurt if I didn't acknowledge her in public.

[–]jujunior 26 points27 points ago

I like you.

[–]Aikarus 7 points8 points ago

Burnnnnn

[–]zeug666 26 points27 points ago

There was a guy in his late-20's/early-30's in my orientation - he was a carpenter and the opportunity to go to school came up, so he took it. I am sure the booze thing came up, but he made quite a bit of money building custom lofts and furniture for the dorm rooms.

[–]MSUspartan15 215 points216 points ago

good way to meet chicks.

[–]SupermanV2 125 points126 points ago

Something about the word Freshman that gives me a boner.

[–]webby_mc_webberson 114 points115 points ago

Young Man!

[–]AstronautOnFire 10 points11 points ago

There's no need to feel down.

[–]SurfinGrandma 11 points12 points ago

I said, young man!

[–]AstronautOnFire 9 points10 points ago

Pick yourself off the ground.

[–]loercase 37 points38 points ago

Speaking from experience (same situation as the OP), I would say "good way to see plenty of attractive girls you never get the opportunity to talk to, because it's a huge lecture hall." Also, you quickly learn to despise their immature, gossipy ways. First-year lecture halls seriously make me want to kill myself.

[–]Cornelius_Talmadge 14 points15 points ago

Seriously? Oh...my...god.

[–]KingOTheCask 22 points23 points ago

Excuse, me. I don't know if you know this, but I was alive when Carter was in office. I know my Bushes, if you catch my drift.

[–]seditious3 3 points4 points ago

Hell, I VOTED for Carter.

[–]Sleepy_One 17 points18 points ago

As someone who graduated when he was 28, freshmen girls are just that. Little girls. I much preferred seniors and grad students :)

[–]apullin 11 points12 points ago

Just for a laugh, listen closely to the "questions" they ask. You'll see very quickly that they aren't answering questions, they are just talking about themselves; it'll invariably turn to, "Well, when you say thing XYZ, I don't think that applies me to because of reason ABC."

[–]anthrocide 16 points17 points ago

who are you fooling, he's a redditor for christ sake.

[–]ButtFuckSlutsGoNuts 25 points26 points ago

HAHA BECAUSE NOBODY ON THE INTERNET HAS SOCIAL SKILLS!!!!!

[–]anthrocide 41 points42 points ago

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA

EDIT: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

[–]onelazykid 8 points9 points ago

You just reminded me of Mandark's laugh from Dexter's lab.

[–]migzors 22 points23 points ago

Those in their late twenties, early thirties, forties, fifties it does not matter when you go to college, as long as you GO.

I'm 28 years old. I graduated high school in 2002. During my freshman year I slacked off and ended up failing and had all of my friends graduate without me even though I went to summer school constantly to try and catch up. I was depressed about it, I tried extremely hard to get back on track but it was not enough. However, I made the best group of friends I could ever ask for by failing my freshman year, a group of friends I still have to this day. I looked at the bright side of things and everything was better.

When I graduated, I didn't really move forward in my life, I just stood still working 9 to 5's that I hated. I never had a strong college presence in my life growing up, no one during my time graduated or attended college. Fear kept me away from doing what I wanted to do. It wasn't until I ended up serving at a restaurant that reality slapped me in the face. Here I am, waiting tables with no structure or degree ..just working day after day, barely able to support myself. So I visited my local community college, got financial aid and am in my first semester of college. Still taking summer school classes just like I did in high school, 3 all together.. but I'm loving every minute of it. Being older made me realize that there's more to life than just doing something you don't love to live, you can do what you love and live happier!

It's just something that hits you, and it can happen to anyone, anytime, any where in your life.

[–]DankasaurusRX 18 points19 points ago

  • Try and Test out
  • Save a ton of money and take it at community college. Most of your classes that are under 300 level will transfer from community college no problem.

[–]mikeah3 113 points114 points ago

Forty-three here, and my second degree. I had to take one as well. At first, I would look around and think, "OMG, these girls are my daughter's age. Ughhh." By the end of the semester, I was thinking, "Wow. They look really firm."

[–]blue_strat 80 points81 points ago

Those moments when your eyes automatically roam over their body, expecting to find a wrinkle, a patch of sun-weary freckles, some general sag; and you are startled when you find nothing. They are entirely smooth and firm, vibrant in their youth and steeped in a world of sex and drugs. You become sad when you realise that those days for you are over, then you are thrilled that somewhere they are still going on, and will do until the end of time.

Somewhere, right now, a beautiful girl at the peak of life is having her brains fucked out. Doesn't it just warm your heart to think of?

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points ago

Mostly it makes me regret my misspent early 20s not fucking anyone's brains for the most part.

[–]frank14752 13 points14 points ago

20 and I think that's the way I'm headed...

[–]PeopleAreStaring 29 points30 points ago

GO FUCK THINGS RIGHT NOW YOU FUCKING FUCK!

[–]iamdanhi 16 points17 points ago

Student arrested after caught copulating with car exhaust pipe on college campus.

[–]PackPlaceHood 7 points8 points ago

First time the tailpipe has seen that type of emissions.

[–]HanAlai 6 points7 points ago

I'm in my early 20s now, it gets better... Right?

[–]lacksimagination 12 points13 points ago

Hey, 30's the new 20.

For men, anyway.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, for me it was realizing some girls actually do want to talk to me (and even find me attractive and want to have the sex) and learning to pick up on social cues that I was too dense and frankly too scared or too self conscious and self loathing to follow through on.

True story. A scorching hot female roommate of mine came home one night and hopped in my bed and bit my shoulder. She then crawled out of the room looking over her shoulder at me. And I slept alone. I was the dumbest fuck on earth that night.

My mid to late 20s have been pretty decent, lets see what the rest holds. But you'll always regret not having more sex with women when you were both young and beautiful and care free. Get out there and meet people and just have fun being yourself and women will come and women will go. Confidence and self realization is sexier than people think.

[–]mrbooze 7 points8 points ago

You know, it actually does. Somewhere some poor young boy is beta-testing some enthusiastic girl who doesn't have the slightest idea what she's doing.

I think I'll go pour myself a nice big glass of whiskey and think fondly of when she's in her 40s and knows how to fuck like a boss.

[–]antocc 4 points5 points ago

nope

makes me jealous actually

[–]blue_strat 18 points19 points ago

Ah, you can't go through life jealous of the fun other people are having. Take it as inspiration, and go find the fun for yourself.

[–]AnotherDouchebag 14 points15 points ago

I went back to college at 24. I'm 27 now, employed right out of college in IT, making more money than I can reasonably spend. You're making the right choice. Good for you.

On the social side, I made a ton of friends that I still see regularly. Some of my real good friends that I met there call me "Dad" because of the age difference.

[–]EnigmasShroom 2 points3 points ago

What degree specifically did you go for? I only minored in Computer Science when I was in school and am regretting it.

[–]DoomChaver 55 points56 points ago

Hey, I went back to school when I was 24 and graduated last fall (at 27). A couple pieces of advice from a fellow older student:

-When you're in classes with a lot of first-years, remember that they are 18. At that age they're idiots in a lot of ways, so was I and so were you. But don't let that bar you from leveraging the knowledge you've gained from the past 7 years of your life, you probably do know more than they do on certain subjects.

-Join one (or a few) really interesting clubs that you know can translate into the professional world, like Model UN or the school paper or something where you can show produced work on a resume. You probably have a job as well as going to school, so don't shotgun, focus on a few extracurricular areas that you can really rock.

-The age thing is going to feel weirder the closer you get to graduation, because by then you'll by 28 or 29 and the incoming first-years will still be 18. Don't go too "Get off my lawn."

-You should know that if you don't work for your degree, your degree doesn't work for you. Don't lose sight of that. Kick ass, participate and network, get good grades, and build a relationship with professors (invaluable resources for writing recommendations or for help job-searching down the road).

[–]grinerizer 15 points16 points ago

I was that age when I started college. I hadn't given a speech in 7 years, and on the last day of "student success" I found myself shaking and sweating profusely in front of 15, 18 year olds. It was terrible. Luckily, I was closer in age to my professors, and connecting with them was very easy, which made life easier.

edit: accidentally a word

[–]OneSilentE 14 points15 points ago

T-T-T-T-TODAY JUNIOR!

[–]youhavetobekiddingme 9 points10 points ago

I'm 22 and just starting soon, but I look 16 so maybe they'll just assume I'm the youngest

[–]babsasf 8 points9 points ago

Oh man I haven't put that much thought into this scenario. But this just made me realize what I'll be in for when I start my first year of college ever next month. I'm 34.

[–]hntd 22 points23 points ago

Odd thing, I was 22 when I started my PhD and I was in all classes to begin with 35 something people who had kids and were married and stuff. They basically treated me like a child, so an interesting twist on things considering 4 months before, undergrad friends were calling me grandpa, lol.

[–]NeutralAngel 16 points17 points ago

When my dad retired from the police department after 20 years, he went back to school to get his bachelor's degree in CCJ, and they told him he had to do a semester-long practicum in a law enforcement related position to get experience.

[–]pizza_tron 3 points4 points ago

Please tell me he got around this.

[–]NeutralAngel 3 points4 points ago

Sort of. He plead his case to the Dean who fed him some bullshit about how he could use it to expand his experience into other roles and wouldn't let him out of the practicum bit. Fortunately, a friend of his was head of a government agency here, and so dad's practicum ended up being showing up twice to his friend's office over the semester. Still had to pay the credit hour tuition though.

[–]crackerasscracker 73 points74 points ago

isn't "taking a bunch of stupid classes" the definition of "going to college"?

[–]moonbasealpha 50 points51 points ago

Yep. If you only took the classes you needed you'll be out in 2.5 years at most.

[–]crackerasscracker 56 points57 points ago

can't have that! leaving too much money on the table!

[–]HereForCOD 24 points25 points ago

Not only that but in that 2.5 years you'd only need to take 1-2 classes a semester leaving you some actual time to learn and reflect on what you're being taught.

Rather than the current system of being force feed 80 extra credit hours of soon to be forgotten material for the sole purpose of being "well rounded."

[–]Triatacon 11 points12 points ago

There's actually a lot to be said for being "well rounded". When you get out into the real world, working for large organizations, and start trying to move up beyond entry level positions, you typically find that they want "well rounded".

[–]splewis 9 points10 points ago

If you take stupid classes, I guess.

[–]ForeverMarried 5 points6 points ago

but I learned so much in my required art history class.. Oh wait, I don't remember a single sentence.

[–]thetallestnebraskan 6 points7 points ago

A lot of people in my freshman classes were 25 and up due to being in the military, and those guys always sat in the front of every class and paid attention. Made me feel like an asshole for playing brickbreaker in the back row.

[–]Klowned 9 points10 points ago

Dig some ditches for a couple years and that subtle myth of go to college and get easy work look shinier and shinier.

[–]TeCuervo 7 points8 points ago

I'm 40 and going back to school.

[–]Gongarr 5 points6 points ago

my mom is in her 40's and is finishing her last round of classes before her bachelor's. she in just now taking freshmen orientation class, due to them telling her she didn't have to, then changing their minds.

[–]Tessai 5 points6 points ago

I went back at 25, it was hard. I'm a SAP anyways, but being around 18 year olds made me feel a little out of place. It ended up being an amazing experience, once I got beyond it and met people.

[–]doctorbusch 4 points5 points ago

if you are just starting college, then aren't you also a freshman...?

[–]cosalich 20 points21 points ago

25 here too, only it's a Business degree and I have several years of experience as a manager and analyst... just need the piece of paper to remove a roadblock. Not really looking forward to the 17 year old know-it-alls.

[–]MaynardJayTwa 43 points44 points ago

But they just graduated High School! They have a twitter and everything!

[–]Jinxo2 47 points48 points ago

And SWAG

[–]Revived 25 points26 points ago

Don't forget they are full of YOLO!

[–]cakeonaplate 2 points3 points ago

It just sounds like a type of yogurt at this point.

[–]SomeGuyWithABoner 6 points7 points ago

And they go cray cray for for things.

[–]UpvoteHere 9 points10 points ago

You sound like the know-it-all.

[–]nybbas 5 points6 points ago

And I am sure the 50 year old in my undergrad program would feel the same about you. The truth is, the gap between 18 and 25 is bigger mentally than the gap between a 25 year old and a 32 year old.

[–]djkaty 10 points11 points ago

I'm 30, and I feel like I've changed more between 25-30 than I did from 18-25. At 25, you THINK you're so much older and more worldly than the 18 year olds, but then you hit 30ish and realize you're now incapable of relating to them on any level whatsoever.

I work with a lot of 21 year olds and could still play nice up until a couple years ago. Now I just stare at them blankly like they're creatures from another planet.

[–]UnknownArchive 3 points4 points ago

ok, I'll give you that. 18-25 is probably the stupidest era of any human's life

[–]andrewsmith1986 27 points28 points ago

Bang some fellow students.

[–]munchyturtle[S] 104 points105 points ago

being able to purchase alcohol makes me a prophet

[–]fluffypenguin 36 points37 points ago

you'll be a god...for all of 3 years >.>

[–]kewidogg 25 points26 points ago

Long enough

[–]ThereOnceWasAMan 8 points9 points ago

that's what she said

[–]scottperezfox 3 points4 points ago

This comment was hidden. But I knew exactly what it said. Well played.

[–]DisgruntledAlpaca 11 points12 points ago

The younguns don't stop comin'.

[–]ruuustin 9 points10 points ago

Best pickup line ever... "Hey, I can buy you beer."

[–]Klowned 7 points8 points ago

Best thing about high school girls, I get older and they stay the same age.

[–]Nick321321 2 points3 points ago

I was at a party just the other day (High school party - Incoming Jr) and there was one person out of the 35 of us that was the only one that could legally drink there. We gave him like $100 and he bought us a few cases of beer and after a couple rounds of goucho and kings cup he had that 17 year old pussy all night long.

[–]jayce513 18 points19 points ago

Hello sir! I am also 25 and in the same boat as you!

\o

[–]munchyturtle[S] 26 points27 points ago

o/ ahoy there!

[–]TickleFightProTour 3 points4 points ago

I went back to college at 24(I'm 25 now) and was lucky enough to be in a program where the majority was around my age.

[–]Big_Oil 4 points5 points ago

Yea I had to take Freshman Orientation when got back from desert storm (USMC) at age 25. I went once and said fuck it. I failed that class because I forgot to withdraw.

[–]The_Mosephus 10 points11 points ago

they covered that the second day...

[–]Cylinsier 8 points9 points ago

There is always at least one dumbass class you have to take to get a degree. Sometimes there are two; this one and the "capstone" class that you take at the end of your program which is supposed to...I don't know what it's supposed to do. Drive the point home that this shit shouldn't cost as much as it does?

[–]connorblikre 8 points9 points ago

when i was taking classes for my I.T. degree they changed the requirements right before i was done with everything and my last class ended up being CS101 where i learned how to use a mouse

[–]konekoanni 2 points3 points ago

My capstone class ended up being pretty interesting, but it had built-in community service, which sucked. But the freshman seminar and a few other generals? Shudder.

[–]DownvoteTsunami 4 points5 points ago

I knew plenty of mid-20s guys during undergrad. They really didn't stand out as badly as you might think.

[–]laschupacabras 4 points5 points ago

Congrats on your decision to go back to school, I hope it goes well. I'm 27 and just graduated with my BS in business, and I felt old a lot when I was in a class with 18 year-olds.

[–]lidleolme 2 points3 points ago

good on you for starting. :-)

[–]Staffonly 2 points3 points ago

I feel like freshman seminars are created to remedy the lack of perspective that a 19 year old kid has because of their limited life experience. They should be optional for someone your age.

[–]UnexpectedSchism 2 points3 points ago

First, you are not that old. Second so what? You are doing college for the first time.

I hope you are living in the dorm. You can supply everyone with liquor.

[–]angstycoder 2 points3 points ago

I started college at 17 after high school, dropped out, started down a different path at another college, realized I never really had a teenage-years-childhood experience, and went kinda nuts for a while. I started going back to take classes I wanted and get back into the school groove in my mid twenties. Can totally relate. Through so many pre-reqs I just felt like I imagine the picture portrays.

[–]pasmeme 2 points3 points ago

I already feel outside of my peer group and I'm only 21.

[–]snoringbeauty 2 points3 points ago

hahahaha me too. I went to a mandatory orientation and several freshmen events... I ended up yelling at a kid for throwing his trash on the ground

[–]Grendel420 2 points3 points ago

Purchase their beer, in exchange for weed. That's what I did. It was pretty sweet.

[–]retepeter 6 points7 points ago

You might just learn something. My advice is to go in to it with an open mind, even if you think it is beneath you. Adam Sandler needed to go through all the grades too....

[–]Zephy73 13 points14 points ago

I don't think its possible to go into a freshman seminar with an open mind.

[–]UnicornOfHate 12 points13 points ago

Well, an open fly, then.

[–]Zephy73 4 points5 points ago

That awkward moment when you have to explain to a room full of co-workers why you just randomly laughed your ass off while sitting in front of a monitor supposedly working.

[–]muppethead 4 points5 points ago

Use it to your advantage. Being slightly older, you can befriend the professor/TA because they're more likely to give you that little bit more of respect, since you're not a noob. Also, bang your TA. Why not?

[–]NovaProspect 4 points5 points ago

Eh, I'm 22 and took some intro courses to boost my GPA, and I'd say a good number of students in there were my age or older. Things are changing. Besides, 25 is still pretty young and most people probably won't even notice your age.

[–]combustion_assaulter 1 point2 points ago

[–]K-Rex-TW 1 point2 points ago

36 here with a college degree already. Getting a second one and the school made me take something along those lines, study practices? Hell, I can't remember.

They were so serious about it that when I wanted to drop the class before it even began, so I could take it at a later time, I had to see a counselor one on one.

[–]chadwickipedia 1 point2 points ago

I took Psycology 101 my senior year in order to graduate...that's exactly how I felt

[–]wjg10 1 point2 points ago

My buddy is 33, been a PI for like 6 years. He's starting undergrad as a freshmen this fall. I can't wait what he thinks of Civics and the discussion coming from 18 year olds.

[–]DrSamkick 1 point2 points ago

I now that feel bro. 23 and in the exact same situation.

[–]Agamemnon323 2 points3 points ago

I think you might actually need some simple classes... know has a k in it.

[–]Klusio 1 point2 points ago

If it makes you feel any better, after two years of community college, I had to take the freshman orientation class, where I had to learn how to buy books and how important it was to attend classes, in order to be allowed to register. Cut to two years later when I transferred to a sister university, where I had to take the same orientation class to register for classes...again.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

dude, I was 35 when I graduated, you have it good.

[–]omgpanic 1 point2 points ago

This is how I feel on reddit.

[–]SalvyboiX92 1 point2 points ago

20 and gonna be a dad... No idea what i want to study and probably wont go to school till later on... Am i Fucked? I need advice for a career :\

[–]Bruce_Leroy 1 point2 points ago

I'm 26 and still have nightmares that I didn't actually finish highschool and have to go back to take geometry. The horror. The horror.

[–]coogie 1 point2 points ago

So? You're still a freshman. You still don't know where the cafeteria is, what the parking situation is, how to contact security, how to get your ID card, how to get your school email, etc.

[–]Soldier-Cynic 1 point2 points ago

Hah, this is exactly how I felt being told I needed an intro to computing course in 2004 to finish my BA. I've been using computers since the Commodore Vic-20 and TRS-80, and my FORTRAN programing course from 1989 wasn't accepted as equivalent. At least it was an easy A.

[–]crazycom64 1 point2 points ago

If all goes according to plan, I'll be a sixth year college student around the same time! I flunked out at the end of my fourth year (when all my friends were graduating) due to poor upper-division standing in my major. They told me I couldn't come back until I raised my grades, but it's not like city colleges offer upper division math. So this summer I'm at Berkeley and with only two weeks, three homework assignments, and two finals to go, I should only need 5 random ass units when I get back to my school in order to graduate.

TL;DR I wish you the best of luck. You are an inspiration to me.

[–]beerme72 1 point2 points ago

I was 29 and had just gotten out of the Navy.
I had a 22 year old girl tell me that I looked tired...that I should get more sleep....after all, college isn't about partying all the time.
I told her I had a new-born at home and was working full time....and was 30.
She didn't seem to understand any of the words I said.

[–]Androne 0 points1 point ago

Pro tip for all the older people in school. Try not to be the old guy who tries to put his 2 cents in thinking he needs to help teach that has to be the most annoying thing in the world. I'm talking about the ones who needed to do it every single lecture relevant or not.

[–]h4rlotsghost 1 point2 points ago

I had to do the same thing. It's just as much fun as the movie.

[–]littleHiawatha 1 point2 points ago

Is it bad that i went through this thread and RES tagged everyone with their age?

[–]TokyoXtreme 1 point2 points ago

I had envisioned Matthew McConaughey from Dazed and Confused, asking the 18 y.o. chicks if they liked to party.

[–]elsucioseanchez 1 point2 points ago

18 year old vagina is impressed by 25 year old wisdom...just saying

[–]wildcolonialboy 1 point2 points ago

Typical Reddit, I spend days wondering if 27 is too old to begin university, then one thread on on the front page convinces me.

[–]PretentiousPessimist 1 point2 points ago

Just graduated at 28. Do not, under any circumstance, make friends with the freshman. They will just ask you to buy beer for them; trust me I know.

[–]kiasuten 1 point2 points ago

Just remember-- you're not cool... unless you pee your pants.

[–]chauna 1 point2 points ago

26 year old in college here. It sucks, but it's not that bad most of the time. Most of the younger kids will be intimidated by you and so won't talk shit. The older kids will think they're badasses and will talk shit, but you're old enough to tell some 21 year old fratty piece of shit to go fuck himself.

I had one teacher call me out last semester on being almost as old as her. I asked her out after class, and lived out my dream of plowing my teacher. Don't worry about being 25, it ain't all bad.

[–]psycho-logical 1 point2 points ago

I didn't get my drivers license til I was 23 and the permit test was asking me all sorts of questions about what are the penalties for drag racing or drinking and driving while under the age of 18 etc. Why do I need to know this shit?

[–]McCl3lland 1 point2 points ago

I started college at 24, after 5 years active duty in the army, and I had to take an Intro to University Living class....i was the only one over 21. However, it was great, because when asked about things like "the drinking age" I was the only one who could legally drink, and kept reaffirming Im fine with it being 21, then get to listen to all the 18 year olds bitch about it being unfair. Entertained the shit out of me. Also, they are all dumb, the kids coming out of high school these days. All of em.

[–]Travwritesstuff 1 point2 points ago

I'm 28 years old and about to start my second semester. Better late than never right. Goodluck
