A quick Google search revealed:

  • That this ad is at least from 2010 2006 if not older.
  • A "You don't have a girlfriend" version also exists.
  • It doesn't fit in with their current ad campaign of "I'm not ____ I'm Proactiv"
  • In pictures of their mall kiosk, this ad doesn't appear.
  • It appeared in an article a year ago with obvious fake ads ("Coke: just brown sugar-water")

I can't actually find anything indicating whether it was a real ad or a Photoshop creation.

If it's real, it's sickening, but I also wonder if Proactiv already apologized/fired people/etc. and, through the magic of the internet, this got legs again. Will be curious to see if the OP gets a response from them addressing the topic.

Edit: Someone PM'd me an older page that contained the ad. They also pointed out the article mentioned in point five.

[–]KR4T0S 59 points60 points ago

I found the other version for men:

http://pics.blameitonthevoices.com/022011/proactiv_ad.jpg

Their advertising in general actually seems pretty crappy. The people they use in their ads don't have any acne needed to be cured in the first place and their whole advertising line seems to be aimed at making people feel terrible so they will buy the product to make themselves adequate.

[–]APeacefulWarrior 62 points63 points ago

Isn't that pretty much the point of all cosmetic adverts?

[–]luKrek 24 points25 points ago

People are too stupid to realise this is how pretty much how consumerism works. You are fat! Buy this diet. You are ugly! Buy these clothes! etc

[–]dangereaux 15 points16 points ago

Not always, there are plenty of people with severe acne in proactiv commercials. And their product actually works.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]dangereaux 4 points5 points ago

Well, I use proactiv myself and it works beautifully. It all depends on your skin type. I have moderate acne. Some people are allergic to proactiv. And as to people not having severe acne in their commercials, my cousin had acne similar to this girl and while it didn't work as well on him, it made a really significant difference.

[–]cafe_bustello 0 points1 point ago

Whereas it didn't do a thing to me except make my face smell bad.

[–]SpoonPoetic 2 points3 points ago

It depends. Some people are allergic to its main ingredient, benzyl peroxide. Other people actually need milder soaps that don't irritate the skin, causing it to over-produce in defense. I happened to fall into the latter two categories; but I had several friends for whom it worked very well. None of them were Acutane-level bad acne, though.

[–]00000000005 0 points1 point ago

It irritated my skin to hell. I hated it.

[–]catchthewheel 0 points1 point ago

It worked for me when I had horrible teenager acne.

[–]milea 0 points1 point ago

It works for me-- not perfectly, but better than anything else I've tried. Then again I don't do it twice a day like you're supposed to due to dry skin.

[–]RainbowsOfDeath 0 points1 point ago

I tried the 60 day(bought from a mall sales rep), followed all instructions but it didn't fully work. To make things worse, the refining mask smelled terrible.

[–]bluethings 0 points1 point ago

Yes! Thank you! The smell of it made me not even want to put it on... and surprise, I hardly ever did. :/

[–]kriktor 70 points71 points ago

I wish more people would search Google before going on the offensive over stuff like this. I found articles from 2010 referring to this as an old ad. I have a feeling they got a lot of bad feedback when it originally ran and now I just feel bad for whoever manages their Facebook page.

[–]usquebaugh 8 points9 points ago

now I just feel bad for whoever manages their Facebook page.

This is how I always feel when a big company winds up in a group's crosshairs (justified or not) and people do the bulk of their activism through sending nasty messages to their generic contact email or on their Facebook page. It's just some sad, underpaid intern or entry level marketer that has to deal with it all.

(ninja) Edit: Hearkening back to my days as an entry level marketer, this would actually be a nice change from the daily grind, so harp away.

[–]ModernAlias 9 points10 points ago

Something about this ad screams "OMGATTITUDE". I wonder what annoying magazine it was targeted for.

[–]KR4T0S 9 points10 points ago

I didn't think about the magazine angle actually. I thought the ad was outrageous and impossible but I can imagine something like this fitting into a lot of those trashy magazines.

[–]jesus_swept 13 points14 points ago

Seventeen. I don't even have to think about it. I remember my older sister read Seventeen when she was in high school and I was about nine-ten-ish, and I'd sneak an issue from her room and read one, feeling like it was serious grown-up reading material, like only the most cool, popular girls who knew everything about everything read the almighty Seventeen.

But seriously, I never felt so inadequate at the same time. If that magazine (or a similar magazine for teenagers) had that ad, I would NOT be surprised.

[–]respectwalk 10 points11 points ago

I need to ask.... would that be pronounced "OMG - Attitude", or "Omga-ttitude"?

This is a serious inquiry, I'm not trying to be an ass. I just don't know how that word is supposed to sound in my head when I read it.

[–]zaurefirem 11 points12 points ago

om-gattitude

[–]rilakkuma1 1 point2 points ago

The first appearance of it on Google is January 2001

Evidence: http://tinyurl.com/cylodl5 (Sorry it's in Spanish. I'm in Spain and search just defaults to Spanish)

[–]greenvelvetcake 1 point2 points ago

Well done, Detective TransFattyAcid!

[–]elitexemnas 0 points1 point ago

Can you explain what you are angry with? I've seen the reverse ad campaign on numerous product (shampoo, face product similar to this and the like) and they simply made me chuckle followed by a "Oh God I'm so lonely" if there are some people around because that's the joke and all that. I'm not pimpled or anything but that joke, gender aside, is pretty funny. Not that I'm saying hilarity, or lack thereof is pertinent to whether or not they are wholesome jokes. I am honestly trying to look at, in a non-confrontational way, whether the people who are offended are being overly sensitive or whether I am not being sensitive enough.

[–]SpoonPoetic 4 points5 points ago

You probably never experienced severe acne, then. What it does to a person's (most anyway) self-esteem is crippling. Boys can't hide it as makeup is socially unacceptable. Girls can't hide it because the type of makeup it takes to hide that level of acne costs tons of money and about an hour to apply, so they just look like horribly applied makeup over red, bumpy skin. Sufferers of severe acne already often hate themselves, finding themselves to be the ugliest thing on earth, and feel hopeless. Fat, you can diet; bad clothes you can change; bad haircut grows out. Severe acne that you've tried treatment after treatment, antibiotics, birth control, more treatments, and it only gets worse or stays the same year after year; you don't even know for sure you'll outgrow it... You feel hopeless, like it will never end, you will always be ugly. You hide your face in any way you can because you're ashamed. If anyone tries to compliment you by saying your skin looks better, you cry because it shatters your fabricated illusion that maybe people don't notice.

When you have severe acne, you do NOT need a commercial to remind you how ugly you are in such a horrible, derogatory way.

[–]alecbenzer 0 points1 point ago

Of all the things that cause or have caused my self-esteem issues (which I have quite a few of), acne is probably the least of them (and I used to have pretty bad acne).

[–]alecbenzer 1 point2 points ago

bracing for "what about teh menz" comments

This seems like an issue men face much more often than women. I think it's very common and much more socially acceptable to imply that a man could never have a girlfriend for a particular reason (he's a gamer, he spends too much time on the internet, he's fat, he has dandruff in his hair) than it is to imply the same about a woman.

Not that this says anything about it being okay or not, but I think men might be more used to these kinds of comments and thus less offended by them.

[–]TransFattyAcid 1 point2 points ago

You know, as a fake, this ad is rude, biting and, in the context of other fake ads, it's humorous. It's satire, right up there with coke being nothing but "brown sugar-water".

But if it's a real ad, it shows a company trying to be hip at the expense of their customers' feelings. That type of marketing does speak to some people but, I'm guessing, not the majority. And as adults, we should all be extra aware of this type of marketing being aimed at kids who don't necessarily have the life skills to deal with bullies.

And let's not say that all humorous ads are bad. The first one that comes to mind is the Durex condoms "Happy Father's Day" ad which mocks the competing brand instead of the consumer.

[–]hornofhuman 86 points87 points ago

That's... No way would they... it's just so... it's got to be fake. They couldn't be this stupid.

[–]KR4T0S 6 points7 points ago

I think the really insulting part is the insinuation that you wouldn't know what to do and you'd have to ask your boyfriend for advice. Is this definitely real? Most companies have pretty much killed effective and intelligent marketing but this is pretty bad even by those standards. I never thought I'd look at an ad campaign and say "this is even worse than usual", the bar is so low and yet somebody gets it even lower.

[–]averad 43 points44 points ago

It's a picture of an image on someones computer.... of course it's 100% real

*TLDR - Stop blindly believing shit you haven't taken the time to research yourself, this is one major reason our world is so fucked up.

[–]professorpan 2 points3 points ago

I can see a future for black-hat marketing, where companies create fake, politically-incorrect ads of their competitors, and then crudely leak them out online as if they were real (shaky cellphone photo, screencap of popup ad, etc.), and post it online to pitchfork-friendly parts of the internet (reddit prime). Pitchfork boycotts cost companies money, addressing and denying these cost companies money, and you bet you once it's on the internet, it'll come back time and again to haunt the targeted company every time someone "re-discovers" those images.

[–]boomboxdino 28 points29 points ago

[–]lawofmurphy 47 points48 points ago

You'd think all these single acne-ridden people would just start hooking up. Oh wait...maybe there's more to relationships than how many pimples are involved.

[–]djcapelis 3 points4 points ago

As a lesbian I'd find that offensive if it wasn't so ridiculous and obviously not even intended to target me...

[–]Calgs_ 14 points15 points ago

Who the fuck runs your marketing department Proactiv?

[–]Dakotaleek 30 points31 points ago

GlaDOS

[–]Hannyness 15 points16 points ago

You win this thread. Next they'll just be heading their adverts with "FATTY FATTY NO-PARENTS"...

[–]demented_pants 7 points8 points ago

"and it says here you're adopted, so that's funny too."

[–]Thecrumblingcookie 38 points39 points ago

Got marketing issues?

Just ask your consumers what to do. Oh, that's right, you dont have any consumers.

[–]averad 20 points21 points ago

This proactive ad is as real as this Nike ad

http://i.imgur.com/9CN5u.jpg

[–]bubbleuj 21 points22 points ago

What in the actual fuck?

It crosses the line from unacceptable into laughably terrible. It's pretty standard marketing but it's so pathetically direct. Since when is it okay to be so bluntly Regina George?

[–]MissTheMae 10 points11 points ago

:D I have acne, and a boyfriend! Yay! I got it alll

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

Now you need Proactiv!

[–]brokenstopsign 14 points15 points ago

Oh man this gave me a bit of a laugh... is that bad?

[–]mswench 8 points9 points ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one!

[–]ooowl 53 points54 points ago

When I had acne, I had a boyfriend. So fuck you very much proactiv. Oh and by the way, your product doesnt work for shit.

[–]ellopollyyy 40 points41 points ago

Yeah fuck proactiv. It actually made my acne worse. D:

[–]throwawaytacos 26 points27 points ago

Me too. Turns out benzoyl peroxide is terrible for sensitive skin. If you have sensitive skin you're better off sticking to salicylic acid.

[–]thunderling 22 points23 points ago

Not that this ad doesn't suck or anything, but benzoyl active worked wonders for me in just a week, whereas 2 years of different salicylic acid products never did shit.

[–]CompulsivelyCalm 48 points49 points ago

There's a way to solve this, friends. Find someone with a reasonable case of acne, nothing too terribad but a reasonably even distribution. Treat half of their face with benzoyl peroxide and the other half with salicylic acid. You'll be able to directly observe which one works better, unfortunately odds are good that you'll also turn the test subject into a supervillain that requires the attention of the Batman.

[–]LetLooseOnTheWeb 18 points19 points ago

Finally, I have a concrete plan to lure Batman into a situation where I can meet him and make a move! These things are so hard to plan, you know?

[–]CompulsivelyCalm 4 points5 points ago

Dare I ask what sort of move you'd be making on Batman once you have him in your dastardly snare? I mean.. Christian Bale is rather cute, but that voice! ><

[–]LetLooseOnTheWeb 1 point2 points ago

The Batman I'm in love with never made the movies, he exists only in the world of comic books and animation, so not Bale. As for what I want to with Bats, well, it's a fantasy more suited for Gotham's version of Playboy. It's a steamy story of chase and catch, of sex on rooftops with our costumes still on and ends with him tied to a bed while I torture him about whether I'll remove his mask or not and taunt him about having set up our meeting in the first place. I haven't been developing this fantasy since I hit puberty....

[–]CompulsivelyCalm 1 point2 points ago

..I'll be in my bunk.

[–]LetLooseOnTheWeb 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure what came over me in writing that all down. I certainly won't be replying to /r/forhire anytime soon.

[–]demented_pants 0 points1 point ago

Aw, I had forgotten about the "I have bat-emphysema" voice. :(

[–]ps2dude756 0 points1 point ago

I like you.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

Benzoyl can also be god awful even if you don't have sensitive skin - it is intensely drying, and while it will work initially, it will eventually stop working and cause the pore to go into overdrive and create even more sebum/oil than before in an attempt to counteract the drying effect. This is why a lot of people complain that proactiv worked for a few months for them, then just stopped and made their acne worse than ever.

And it can prematurely age skin with long periods of use. Ick.

[–]sanne_rly 0 points1 point ago

I've used benzoyl peroxide for at least a year now (probably a year and a half) and although my skin is dry, if I use it every day, I don't have acne. I'll take slightly dry skin over acne any day. I have noticed that I have oilier skin though, but then I've always had oily skin. Still - I'll take it over acne.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Well, the issue is that the benzoyl's drying effect forces your pores into overdrive, overproducing sebum/oil in an attempt to compensate for the dryness of your skin. If it continues for a long time, acne can come back, the skin will be more fragile/stressed due to the harshness of benzoyl, and more prone to damage and premature aging.

A lot of people with oily/acne-prone skin make the mistake of assuming dry skin = no acne, when what is actually preventing your acne is the chemical exfoliation of the benzoyl. SO many of my acne-prone clients are absolutely terrified to use a strong enough moisturizer because of the whole dry skin = no acne idea and instead just use the strongest anti-acne creams they can find (and most of this stuff isn't intended for the whole face, and should really only be a spot treatment at most), and its actually making their skin much worse off than it could be.

You can replace harsher stuff like benzoyl with other chemical exfoliators like lactic acid peels (makeup artist's choice makes a good one) or Beta Hydroxy or Alpha Hydroxy Acid creams/gels, along with a water-based moisturizer. Save the benzoyl for spot treatments. Skin that is simulataneously oily and dry is usually suffering from a lack of hydration (hence the oil overproduction to compensate), which can be solved by a water-based moisturizer. The traditional moisturizers people think of when they equate them with breakouts are usually oil-based for people with low oil production and true dry skin, rather than simply dehydrated skin.

Sorry for the novel, this is just a common misconception that is of great interest to me. :P

[–]sanne_rly 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for typing all that up! I really appreciate it. I've recently bought a water-based moisturizer and slowly seeing the change. The stuff I use is 10% benzoyl peroxide. I suppose I could use a 5% solution but I bought the stuff in another country and I'm not going back for another few months - and honestly since it's working out (and has been working for 1,5 years or so) I just don't have the patience or the money to start experimenting with stuff like that. I've had acne since I was 11 - it took me 7 years to find something that works. I have dry and oily skin, but damnit I don't have pimples. I can live with dry and oily skin :)

Seriously though, thanks for typing it all up, it's very interesting to me, too, and I do try to take good care of my skin.

[–]laluz 0 points1 point ago

oh my word. I had a sneaking suspicion. I have sensitive skin and have started to have trouble, I didn't connect it with when I started wearing bare minerals. Thank you so much.. Have you found anything that does work well for (brand-wise for make up)?

[–]forsecretsnotkarma 1 point2 points ago

Same here. And I have super sensitive skin.

[–]thunderling 4 points5 points ago

Diff'rent strokes for different...skin.

[–]cydonia90 1 point2 points ago

Or hey - everybody's skin is different!

[–]zeezle 2 points3 points ago

Turns out I'm actually allergic to benzoyl peroxide and it made my eyes swell shut. Weird part was that I used it for a few days beforehand with no problems, was slowly building up - then BAM, woke up one morning eyes (and the rest of my face) all swollen and blotchy. I looked like a puffy alien for almost a week. However, my acne completely disappeared during that time (it came back in a a week or two later since I obviously stopped using the BP). It wasn't super severe to start with, but it was nice being completely clear for the first time since I was 8 or 9 years old.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

This happened to me once, except it was all at once, overnight. I woke up in the morning and didn't look like myself, it was really weird. The first moment I looked in the mirror, still in my half-asleep state, I was totally creeped out. Like, "who is in my mirror?!?"

[–]zeezle 0 points1 point ago

Hahaha, yes, exactly! Actually the thing that was the weirdest was that my eyelids were so swollen that my eyelashes were brushing up against them. It was the weirdest thing I've ever felt.

[–]bunnybunnybunny 0 points1 point ago

My eyes swelled shut too! It was a terrifying experience. It left permanent wrinkles under my eyes where the skin had swelled. I felt like I aged 10 years in one night. But yay, no blemishes for two whole weeks! /s

[–]teaprincess 1 point2 points ago

Tried and tested a few hours ago. I experimented with my boyfriend's little sister's Proactiv in the shower this evening and my face began tingling and burning. I immediately washed it off, used a gentle cleanser and moisturised when I got out of the shower but my face felt hot and a little red for a while after that. If somebody has acne, their skin is already irritated and if they have sensitive skin I can see this being an absolute fucking nightmare.

Proactiv isn't the only range with which this could happen, of course - when my brother was a teenager he put Clearasil or Oxy cream on his face (I forget which) and the benzoyl peroxide made his skin allergically react and flake for a couple of days.

[–]Cyberus 0 points1 point ago

It actually worked wonders for me, but I'm pretty certain it was simply because it helped me develop a face cleaning regiment I didn't have before. The stuff really made your face dry as fuck though and it didn't even come with a good moisturizer, so any disruption in the routine would immediately cause your face go into oil producing overdrive.

[–]teaprincess 0 points1 point ago

I have pretty clear skin, but my boyfriend (who didn't get acne in his teens) had a really bad stage of it a few months after we started going out. It absolutely wrecked his self-esteem and made him feel terrible. It didn't make me think he was hideous or anything, and I gave suggestions finding products and solutions that would help. I'd like to believe that most people aren't dicks and would not break up with somebody or reject them because of their acne, i.e. a temporary, superficial problem.

[–]teaprincess 0 points1 point ago

Also, you go girl. :D

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

It helped with my acne...

[–]Lolworth 11 points12 points ago

There is a version with the roles reversed, everyone though it was funny cos the guy is the one without a partner. ಠ_ಠ

[–]CtrlC_plus_CtrlV 6 points7 points ago

I hate how Proactiv straight up tells people they are ugly if they have acne. Their entire platform is to strike fear into those who have acne and don't use their product.

[–]WeLoveKanjimari 4 points5 points ago

Damn! It's almost like...they're trying to advertise it!

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

Even though this ad is a fake... Wouldn't this be a good marketing plan?

[–]takealookatbannermcl 8 points9 points ago

I'm sorry but this isn't fake. I get Seventeen magazine delivered to my house and it actually ran there. Shocked me the first time I saw it but didn't think too much about it.

[–]mmix01 12 points13 points ago

Absolutely ignorant

[–]flickum_bicus[S] 20 points21 points ago

not only in the main message, either. The whole "a girl wouldn't know what to do, she'd have to ask her boyfriend" subtext is pretty shitty as well.

[–]WeLoveKanjimari 5 points6 points ago

I love this. This is so funny.

It says "Ask your boyfriend". Obviously that means "Girls are fucking incompetent and need a man to help them through the basics of life". There's no way it could mean "Ask your boyfriend" or be a lead-up to "Oh right, you don't have one". It's obviously a direct statement on the intelligence of all women in the world.

Holy shit.

This is so stupid.

[–]tonguesplitter 8 points9 points ago

Good thing there is not a male version that says "Ask your girlfriend..."

Oh, wait.

[–]CowFu 0 points1 point ago

Ask your girlfriend...try not to jump to conclusions so easily.

Edit: Both are fake btw.

[–]WeLoveKanjimari 0 points1 point ago

Do you really not realize I was being sarcastic?

[–]CowFu 0 points1 point ago

I did not, apparently neither did the other 2 people that responded to you. Sorry, but I've seen too many comments similar to yours that were not sarcastic.

[–]duhduhduhduhduh 3 points4 points ago

I don't think it's so much ignorant as deliberately inflammatory.

[–]WeLoveKanjimari 1 point2 points ago

"I have an idea for the perfect advertising campaign! We'll deliberately insult all women on the planet! That will make them buy our product!"

Are you serious?

Is it not possible that you're being deliberately offended? Holy shit.

[–]piratepixie 1 point2 points ago

All men too, seeing as there's a mens version.

[–]thisguy012 0 points1 point ago

And fake

[–]Aurora89 9 points10 points ago

Fake.

[–]wskrs 1 point2 points ago

It may be fake, but some of their commercials implying what this poster says are not.

[–]cassieness 0 points1 point ago

But actually, I heard it's fake.

[–]kirakage 7 points8 points ago

Can someone explain the point of view that it's horrible? I am a guy, who has had acne for 3+ years, and hasn't had a girlfriend for a lot longer. I saw the gender-reversed version two years ago and thought it was hilarious.

Now, I do think this is a bit harsh, but then I think, "Hang on, when it's targeted at me, I find it funny" and I don't like double standards.

[–]julieb123 8 points9 points ago

I've also seen horrible ones aimed at men, too.

What the FUCK.

[–]NvaderGir 4 points5 points ago

It's fake.

[–]laur8520 3 points4 points ago

Haha, like I'd buy Proactiv in the first place, this is just another reason not to.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Why wouldn't you buy proactiv in the first place?

This ad is a fake, BTW.

[–]laur8520 0 points1 point ago

The small handful of people I know who've used it have nothing good to say about it. Also, I'm lucky enough to have only mildly irritating bouts of acne, and usually just stick with soap, water, and a wash cloth. Good to hear that this isn't a real ad, thanks for letting us know.

[–]Jackthastripper 1 point2 points ago

Fuck that's rough.

!!!

[–]SkippityHop 1 point2 points ago

I've seen the version for men all around the mall before.

[–]bang_Noir 9 points10 points ago

I think you're all overreacting a bit. It's just a joke.

[–]teaprincess 1 point2 points ago

The problem is that this product and this joke are both aimed at a particular group, i.e. people who have acne. People with acne who want something to help it are already going to have potential issues with their self-esteem, and feel conscious that people will notice their skin problem. It's therefore hurtful and emotionally damaging to the very people it's aimed at.

I think it's a fake ad, though... but it speaks volumes about a lot of other similar advertisements for skin and cosmetic products. :(

[–]3DPK 3 points4 points ago

Saw a rage comic about the male version of this and no one freaked out. Hmmmmmm

[–]moismycat 2 points3 points ago

I've always had problem skin, and before I finally got it under control (thank you, hormonal birth control pills) I never had problems finding a boyfriend and/or dates. And my acne was at least "moderate", with some outbreaks possibly crossing into "severe" territory.

And ProActiv did. not. work. at all for me. But it was really expensive.

[–]mandano 5 points6 points ago

Whaaa... I'm pretty sure all teenagers have acne and a good chunk of them have boyfriends

[–]flickum_bicus[S] 7 points8 points ago

This crossed my facebook today several times. My friends and I let proactiv know what we thought of their shitty marketing via facebook and twitter. Feel free to do the same.

[–]YouCantBeSeirous 36 points37 points ago

There is NO WAY they'd alienate such a huge portion of their target demographic. Right? It has to be photoshop.

[–]vgarrett 4 points5 points ago

That isn't going to alienate those girls; it's going to manipulate them into thinking they're ugly, worthless and need Proactiv to be valued by a boy.

[–]ohhector 49 points50 points ago

Great job jumping the gun without doing any research into whether this ad is real or not.

[–]AxelPrime 4 points5 points ago

Wait... wait wait wait. This is fake. Let's not start the witch hunt yet.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Wait so nobody has a sense of humor?

[–]averad 3 points4 points ago

This was posted over two years ago and re-posted many times!

^ 2 year old Reddit post about this same stupid picture.

[–]Smackithdown 1 point2 points ago

I don't think it's that serious. Aren't there bigger problems in the world than a shitty ad?? And please don't say this adds to any discrimination, it's just a stupid attempt at a joke. I don't think it's that bad but that's just my opinion.

[–]ThaDeadFetus 2 points3 points ago

Lighten up. It's called a joke. Also, if I'm not mistaken the original photo (if this isn't shopped in the first place) was about guys not having girlfriends

[–]Jasper1984 -2 points-1 points ago

You'll sing another tune when it is dead fetusses that aren't getting girl/boyfriends. (Have some embalming oil)

Nah i just disagree, this is secretly-culture-determining stuff.(and it doesn't matter if it is about guys or girls.)

[–]unifawn 2 points3 points ago

The only thing more offensive than this ad is the tagline above it on imgur: "Whoever designed this ad should be force-fed a bag of dicks." Um, wtf? As if threatening forced sex of any kind is somehow more acceptable than an insult?

[–]nomoreftknox 0 points1 point ago

Oh for fuck sake this isn't the work place. No need to be all PC about every single thing. I swear, if you people could make shit like this illegal you would.

[–]Changey 1 point2 points ago

As a female that has recently started experiencing the process of getting and having acne for the first time in my life due to stress, this really hurts to see and it is terrible that a stupid advertisement can do that.

[–]wilki724 0 points1 point ago

Hahahahaha that's a brilliant ad!!!! Works for me. Where's your sense of humour?!

[–]wskrs 0 points1 point ago

I don't know if anybody else has seen the commercial with the brunette woman with long brown hair, but she basically snarkily implies that if you have bad skin, nobody will like you.

Seriously. I've been seeing it for the past couple of years and it pisses me off to no end every time it comes on.

[–]kitney 0 points1 point ago

Can I just say I HATE PROACTIVE! Please if your using proactive and staying at other peoples homes bring your own face cloths/towels? Ive had a whole expensive set ruined when my sister-in-law house sat. Their product bleaches the shit out of the towels. Plus I cannot see how that would be good for your face either.

[–]PigFarmington 0 points1 point ago

What concerns me is the cancer/tumor causing properties in products like this.  They don't say why, but that's why they suggest you stay out of the sun.  It accelerates cancer.

[–]scuzzlebutt07 0 points1 point ago

Man, I'm a dude and this aggravates me, so does the male version. Demeaning someone is not a good way to convince them to buy your overpriced hemorrhoid cream.

[–]Mel_Melu 0 points1 point ago

My friends use Proactiv...they've told me that you can never stop using it once you start because your skin clears up instantly and will break out if you try to escape its' grasp.

[–]pasgow 0 points1 point ago

I actually found this pretty funny... Of course it's ridiculous, but still pretty funny. I even have decently terrible skin. I think people just need to be able to laugh about things like this. It's not like there's any truth behind the add. Props to them for taking a risk

[–]divinedeviance 0 points1 point ago

This makes me really sad.... :( this is not okay, even if it is fake On another note, Proactiv gave me hives, so I think I'll stick with my acne

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

My now boyfriend had pretty bad acne in high school. I was super hot for him. The acne didn't matter.

As a woman who took advertising design, I can tell you 100% (and you probably all know this already) the aim of nearly every ad campaign is to make you feel shitty about who you are and that you need their product in order to have a better life!

Bullshit.

[–]CtrlC_plus_CtrlV 0 points1 point ago

I hate how Proactiv straight up tells people they are ugly if they have acne. Their entire platform is to strike fear into those who have acne and don't use their product.

[–]meow_meowmeow 5 points6 points ago

looks like you usernamed your comment!

[–]dizneedave 3 points4 points ago

[–]uvpote 1 point2 points ago

Who said that?

[–]Brightinfinity 0 points1 point ago

only if it makes fun of men with acne who don't have a girlfriend!

That version wasn't funny either.

[–]usedtowork -1 points0 points ago

I think /r/TwoXChromosomes should be ashamed for assuming this ad is targeting women instead of gay men

[–]uvpote 3 points4 points ago

Or it could be targeting both? No one said it was just women.

[–]BrawndoTTM 2 points3 points ago

More like, the guy who shopped that photo should be ashamed.

[–]yupitsani -1 points0 points ago

I really doubt this is real

[–]JazzyEm 0 points1 point ago

I don't have full on acne, but I get zits from time to time, and my boyfriend loves to try and pop them, like it's some kind of super fun grooming activity. Suck it proactive.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]YouCantBeSeirous -1 points0 points ago

Well that's kind of super harsh.

I mean, their target demographic is already insecure and the ad says, "You're ugly AND nobody loves you because you're ugly."

[–]abriil5 0 points1 point ago

What a lame add

[–]joaniesteelie 0 points1 point ago

Holy shit! If this is real, that is downright venomous!

[–]sunlight10 -1 points0 points ago

Like as if I'm going to ask my boyfriend for skin advice. No offence, but I'd ask my mum or my auntie. Sorry Proactive.

[–]FeatheredMasks -2 points-1 points ago

Fake fake fake fake. Come on, ladies.

[–]dangereaux -1 points0 points ago

I was just waiting for this to come here. Its fake. Some people here jump on the offense wagon way too quickly.

[–]ghebert001 -1 points0 points ago

Probably a fake ad, but when you think about it, they are just being less subtle than every other ad out there.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

I'm just going to go out and say that, even if its real, I see no problem with it. Its pretty funny, and only stupid people would fall for this type of marketing. Getting angry over it is pointless. I bet most of you don't even use this product.

Just my opinion.

[–]krakow057 -1 points0 points ago

and people say feminists don't have a sense of humor and make a big deal out of minor shit...

I WONDER WHY

really, this subreddit is so dumb sometimes, you are not making a good point, girls

[–]Anotherconcussion -3 points-2 points ago

Saw this in WTF, cracked up. Saw it here, cracked up. It's a joke. Lighten up, people. Sheesh.

[–]brizzi -2 points-1 points ago

Just wait until my boyfriend hears about this!!!! oh, wait...

honestly though... This is just... offensive to single people with acne? I mean it's immature and dumb but I dont think it's that big of a deal especially since it's an old ad that they aren't even using anymore.

[–]quicklookleft -2 points-1 points ago

no, it's funny

[–]kiwicado -3 points-2 points ago

When the other version was posted on /r/funny or something it was laughed at. But as soon as they make one directed towards women, it's offensive? Jesus, have a sense of humor.

Edit: yeah, yeah, I expected you to downvote me, but you all know it's true. There's an /r/Feminism for this stuff.

[–]captaincream 0 points1 point ago

I know I am going to be shit on by 2x for this even though this is just a general observation regarding Americans: Americans are too easily offended and are loud in their unfounded complaints. It is a silly piece of advertising that is directed at both men and women (there is a boys version of this too).

[–]kiwicado 1 point2 points ago

That was basically my point, but I wasn't saying it about Americans. I agree people are too offended by it, but I, as an American, thought it was funny and I just think it's hypocritical of everyone on 2x to get all up in arms about it when I bet a few of them even laughed at the men's version.

[–]captaincream -3 points-2 points ago

They also have a version for men saying "oh right, you don't have a girlfriend."

No need to make a fuss over it.

[–]TehClar -5 points-4 points ago

Because motivation...?

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]squidfest 14 points15 points ago

It is not the woman- shaming part that is offensive, it is the idea that you need to rely on a sexual partner for information and that if you look bad no one will ever love you. It isn't female- specific; no matter the gender it's still pretty terrible.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]antisocialmedic 10 points11 points ago

It isn't funny now and it wouldn't be funny if the sexes were reversed.
