That's a Dauntless, I have a model of one on my shelf.

[–]dangerchrisN 1 point2 points ago

The title says SBD, which IS the Dauntless/Banshee.

Saw this about a week ago on here. Wait a little longer before you repost at least.

ahh I'm sorry I didn't see it on here, should have checked though

So much blue, it looks great.

[–]CupBeEmpty 4 points5 points ago

Since I said it on the original post I guess I will say it again here: "So blue."

[–]Zoltar23 2 points3 points ago

Wow that's good picture quality for the time, or it's further proof of time travelers.

Anyone else notice the poorly cropped out signature in the lower right corner?

[–]ThaloBlue 2 points3 points ago

Yup. I recon it was a Life magazine stamp.

EDIT: Yup. From an article entitled "Life on Midway" apparently.

I didn't notice that

If this was higher resolution, it would definitely make it into make desktop background rotation. Great pic either way.

Always loved the Dauntless. Those big honkin' dive brakes are so cool.

[–]RyanSmith 1 point2 points ago

I must have been intense for the gunner in the back seat during a dive; not being able to see how close to the ground you were, then coming out of the dive and firing at a ship that is filling the sky around you with anti-aircraft fire.

[–]ChrisQF[S] 0 points1 point ago

that would be amazing

People always say that ball turret gunners were the bravest flyers of the war, but I hold that it's the dive bomber rear gunners... They are falling towards the Earth with complete trust that the pilot will pull them out of the dive at the last second. Any error or damage to the aircraft and they will smash into the sea. That had to be one of the most terrifying seats to fill in the entire war.

The right (our left) side of the nose is a little dented up on the center one.

The silent but deadly ones are always the best

Beautiful picture!

Douglas? Are you serious? At least give that deathtrap its correct name!

[–]ThaloBlue 2 points3 points ago

That is the correct name.... The Douglas SBD. Reporting name "Dauntless".

[–]vade101 1 point2 points ago

The 'Douglas' is a bit redundant, what with SBD standing for 'Scout, Bomber, Douglas'.
