Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

[–]iBleeedorange 1 point2 points ago

Ahahahaha

[–]djdanlib 175 points176 points ago

Good, a gallery with proper attribution and everything! This should have been the post, not a sourceless imgur album.

[–]btown_brony 35 points36 points ago

To be fair, the sourced gallery doesn't expand with RES, so it's less likely this would have gotten the attention it deserved without using imgur. OP should have written the source as a comment, though.

[–]repomonkey 1 point2 points ago

Came here to say the same. Recognised many of those photos from DeviantArt and it pisses me off when people just help themselves and redistribute without any attribution.

[–]Jardun 15 points16 points ago

To the top!

[–]user555 1 point2 points ago

YES!

[–]evilbob 1 point2 points ago

I love you.

[–]mrfeenysays 1 point2 points ago

Exactly what I came here looking for! Much appreciated.

[–]MisallocatedRacism 1 point2 points ago

Saved..

[–]DrDebG 1 point2 points ago

That's a whole lot of eye candy all in one place. Thank you for the attribution. Sometimes, people forget that photographers are artists who deserve credit for helping us see the world in a different way.

[–]DynamicImpulses 589 points590 points ago

I have seen so little of this planet. What am I doing?

[–]Pop-X- 629 points630 points ago

[–]H_J_Farnsworth 99 points100 points ago

I had an existential crisis once.

[–]Gingerbreadmancan 36 points37 points ago

Okay, Hubert.

[–]MestR 24 points25 points ago

Well don't leave us hanging, what conclusion did you come to? Do you exist or not?

[–]HighSorcerer 8 points9 points ago

Turns out he doesn't exist, and his presence on Futurama has simply been a mass hallucination by all of the viewers thanks to Hypnotoad.

[–]Flakbadger 1 point2 points ago

Can you phrase that in the form of a "what if" question?

[–]ArtfulJack 1 point2 points ago

This actually happens sometimes.

[–]shavin_high 77 points78 points ago

you know I was thinking the same thing. if only it were easier to explore. but look at it this way. In a way you are seeing so much of this planet. how unlucky it must have been for people before photographs and internet.

[–]Not_a_Clue 45 points46 points ago

They may have been more lucky. Ignorance is bliss.

[–]Level99RaidBoss 50 points51 points ago

Dying from smallpox or starvation is not bliss though.

[–]Not_a_Clue 25 points26 points ago

Yeah, but I was only referring to photographs. Obviously antiseptic and antibiotic advances are good.

[–]ychromosome 1 point2 points ago

Seriously, read this book: Vagabonding

[–]Bluemoon_333 1 point2 points ago

Technology's spoilt us, plus the fact that we can now fly anywhere we want! Louis CK describes it so well

[–]AscentofDissent 64 points65 points ago

Have you tried being rich?

[–]kazyfake 1 point2 points ago

I tried once... ONCE!

[–]BJUmholtz 1 point2 points ago

Boooo. Greenpeace isn't a bunch of rich kids. I think?

[–]mmtrebuchet 56 points57 points ago

Reminded of this great strip from C&H.

I really should scuba dive more. The water is just so fascinating!

[–]ShiningMyStroller 59 points60 points ago

That I believe was the last frame of C&H before Watterson retired. Honestly it brings a tear to my eye to think about it.

[–]jimyin 18 points19 points ago

I think this is the most amazing thing I have read on reddit this week.

If that's right, damn brother, good knowledge.

[–]DeathToPennies 19 points20 points ago

It is correct. As an owner of The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, I can assure you that those are the last two panels, on the last page, of the last book.

[–]KalisNA 13 points14 points ago

As an old person who actually read the paper when this comic was published, I can also confirm :'(

[–]ShiningMyStroller 4 points5 points ago

Well you can probably guess the source of this piece of knowledge. Honestly though I think the frame is so poignant... kind of symbolizes the unknown of growing up but the necessity of facing that unknown with childish excitement. imho

[–]HellsGuardian 115 points116 points ago

At first I was like "This isn't Cyanide and Happiness" then I was like "Oh, Calvin and Hobbes, that's fine too".

[–]peregriino 6 points7 points ago

I was thinking the same thing. One day i'm gonna quit all this "normal" everyday life and just go

[–]rehx 9 points10 points ago

I'm a typical adult: not yet 30, own my own place and car, make pretty good money, am well educated, in decent shape, and have a loving girlfriend. I want to get married and have kids because I believe in spreading my damn genes and enjoying watching how they'll manifest in the world.

But I want to see the world as well.

And there's no reason I can't.

I live in Canada, but I'm visiting Europe later this year for a few weeks. Then I'll decide if I want to move there. I don't care what kind of job I get, but we've decided we want to just make enough to be able to explore, then potentially move back home to Canada to raise the offspring. Europe is a great launchpad to see a lot of the world, and I've already seen a lot of SE Asia.

Why can't you do the same?

[–]SkyNTP 1 point2 points ago

For some of us, a specific job or amazing person/people is part of the "seing the world" bargain.

[–]jking11 4 points5 points ago

Redditing

[–]NateTheGreat26 71 points72 points ago

Welp, that's it, I'm becoming a monk.

[–]Flipperbw 10 points11 points ago

That monk picture, though thoroughly beautiful, was absolutely not taken in 2012.

One example source from 2008

and another.

[–]Rawlo234 56 points57 points ago

Where is that 'World's Edge' photo taken?

[–]alexholt 9 points10 points ago

Oh my god, thank you! I've actually been to one of these places you see on reddit threads, and didn't even recognise it

[–]Sindragon 8 points9 points ago

My family home is literally off the right side of that photo. I used to do my daily exercise there, and even I didn't recognize it. I've never seen it looking that dramatic before.

[–]Rawlo234 2 points3 points ago

Thanks

[–]Melizipan 33 points34 points ago

[–]Budddy 6 points7 points ago

That was cool, thanks.

[–]Vangoghbothears 1 point2 points ago

[–]yangx 35 points36 points ago

[–]Hoser117 33 points34 points ago

Hamilton Pool... I live in Austin and visit that place all the time. It's gorgeous.

[–]onatwork 6 points7 points ago

Great place to visit and cool off! Maybe one of the most accessible places in the list.

[–]edx77 8 points9 points ago

Fellow Austinite! How are you?

[–]RiotGrrL319 4 points5 points ago

Well, I don't know about Hoser117, but I'm fantastic! Thanks for asking! How are you, fellow Austinite?

[–]edx77 4 points5 points ago

Awesome! At work. Not much going on. And you fellow? It's great butting heads with each other

[–]mirrorz 1 point2 points ago

I've been there a few times. The coolest thing to do in Houston is drive a few hours to Hamilton Pool. :)

[–]strong_grey_hero 77 points78 points ago

I would like a wallpaper version of all of these.

[–]SavageColdness 76 points77 points ago

Im going to make a theme pack of these for windows 7. I'll throw a link here when done.

Halfway through this album, I couldn't help but think, "Amazing Wallpapers for the last half of 2012."

[–]micahaphone 9 points10 points ago

Many of these are my future wallpapers. Heck, I'm just commenting to I can find them later.

[–]shavin_high 35 points36 points ago

[–]Xinil 1 point2 points ago

A LOT of these photos can be found at InterfaceLIFT. The Hawai Maelstrom one I've used as my own wallpaper from the site.

[–]sirlearnsalot 29 points30 points ago

That photo of the monks is from at least 2007 if not much earlier. I know this because a family friend took the picture and gave a framed print to my parents last year.

lol "colliding" rivers in geneva, switzerland. not only do we collide particles, but rivers, too.

[–]rethinkandrewrite 15 points16 points ago

Hey, Switzerland is represented in four of those pictures. We've really got it all.

Edit: Or even five, if you count the wristwatch...

[–]analogorithm 13 points14 points ago

Switzerland, it's not just chocolate and peace anymore.

[–]okko7 2 points3 points ago

Love your comment. And, did you see, Switzerland is represented 5 times on these photos.

[–]breakingeven 11 points12 points ago

Anyone know anything about picture 17?

[–]stoopidtrooper[S] 19 points20 points ago

Bora Bora is a beautiful Island in Pacific Ocean near Tahiti. A place you must visit. Awesome Diving!

[–]breakingeven 3 points4 points ago

Thanks!

[–]elastic-craptastic 20 points21 points ago

Question. The guy jumping from really high up; How far, in miles, can he go laterally? He's so high up that I imagine landing in a particular spot would be hard to do. What would the range of "stray" be if he was trying to fall straight down? What if he was trying to go sideways? How far could he go then? 50 miles? 100 miles?

[–]Karotte 23 points24 points ago

Posted another picture today (here), but did not get any love :-(. Red Bull sponsored project. They wanna break the record for highest jump this summer, jumping from 120.000 feet. Oh, and he is also gonna break the sound barrier on his way down.

Edit: me stupid, mix up words

[–]elastic-craptastic 6 points7 points ago

People have posted about this several times, so people are probably downvoting it as a repost. Shit is fascinating though.

[–]eyal0 1 point2 points ago

Does it count as breaking the sound barrier if you're not in an atmosphere capable of sound?

[–]themanifold 1 point2 points ago

Keep in mind, he is only 71000 feet up, or less than 14 miles in the air. The amount of distance he could travel sideways is likely significantly less than that, especially since the atmosphere is thinner the higher you go and so should produce less drag. I'm guessing he could travel a few miles horizontally at best. Perhaps more if he had a wingsuit, I'm not sure what the limit would be then, but certainly less than 50 miles.

[–]CoolMcDouche 9 points10 points ago

I'd like to contribute the ones that I have saved for my desktop background slideshow. (All from reddit of course.)
Here you go. EDIT: A few of these are not from reddit. My bad.

[–]2000pesos 85 points86 points ago

K That bus is definitely not in Mexico City. Unless everyone there understands (I'm assuming) Chinese.

[–]faerielfire 75 points76 points ago

Japanese actually.

[–]Sarcolemma 14 points15 points ago

Also the driver's side is on the right side, which would only happen in Japan, Britain, and other few countries.

[–]choochoochoose 15 points16 points ago

Actually a lot of countries:

http://www.drivers.com/article/968/

And about a third of the world's population.

[–]mojitoix 4 points5 points ago

It is and that photo is from 2011, they changed the "sweater" to some graffiti last year.

[–]jrriojase 1 point2 points ago

Here's a photo which shows a car with Mexico City license plates in the background.

[–]Jbergur 21 points22 points ago

May I ask where you found these photos? I believe number 11 originally was taken by me...

[–]scribbling_des 11 points12 points ago

You believe? You mean you aren't sure?

[–]Jbergur 8 points9 points ago

The thing is, I was there a few years ago, took tons of photos, edited them and stored them. As time passed I got the opportunity to use them for various contests, backgrounds, ads and blogs. One day my harddrive wiped and I can only find a few of the photos.

I am most certainly not the only photographer who has fallen for this motive, but that picture sure does look familiar. Although, I don't mind...

[–]uneffect 1 point2 points ago

How do you back up nowadays?

[–]LazerStallion 4 points5 points ago

Just walks backward with a beeping noise, like the rest of us.

[–]Dovesongz 63 points64 points ago

The edge of the world one made me think of a Minecraft chunk error. I'll show myself out.

[–]bill5125 7 points8 points ago

Whenever I find those, I'll build half a house on them and just leave a gaping hole where the split happens. Especially if it switches suddenly from mountainous terrain to ocean.

[–]inkrat 11 points12 points ago

Buddy of mine and I ended up cutting in our own chunk error. We put it near a river-esque sort of formation so that it would look normal for it to have a bridge that would go over it that suddenly cuts off. The bridge continued on the other end but at a higher elevation so that it would rise up to the plateau nearby.

We also made sure it was aligned to the chunk sizes so it would actually be in the right spot if another chunk error happened right next to it. We put dark blue wool for the last layer to make it look kinda similar and it worked surprisingly well. We'd tell people that you could keep walking over a chunk error and they just ended up falling to their deaths.

[–]ColeScheffler 1 point2 points ago

How long did that take to mine out? I really want to do that, but I think it'd only be worth it on a smp server.

[–]inkrat 2 points3 points ago

About 4 diamond picks between the both of us and 4 or 5 hours. We just marked the perimeter and dug straight down. It was an area that we knew was fairly solid though we did have to be a little careful with water. Exposed caverns were patched up about 4 walls deep with matching blocks. It was grueling but probably the most fun build just for fucking with people.

[–]Dovesongz 1 point2 points ago

That's awesome xD

[–]Smitty1017 46 points47 points ago

Mind blowing, I believe you omitted the photo of me rubbing my nipples with a pair of underwear on my head, however.

[–]handsy_pilot 103 points104 points ago

FYI, the Hannover airport pictures is shopped.

[–]nitefang 55 points56 points ago

Well, it is supposed to be multiple images of take offs, so yes that would be a shop.

However this image is fake anyway, those are not all take in the same place and not all of those airplanes took off on that runway. It was discussed in length when it was originally posted but some of the determining factors were:

The Cessna has US tail numbers, so it would have to make a pan Atlantic flight, which it is not capable of or it would be extremely unlikely.

Half of those air planes cannot take off at the angle they are portrayed at.

The other Half are not taking off steeply enough for it to be done be a believable pilot (if they were taking of like that it would be a novice).

I have no experience with airplanes, just saying what was discussed before.

[–]mirach 21 points22 points ago

And I've heard that Southwest does not fly to Hannover, Germany.

[–]Hoobleton 7 points8 points ago

Also, many of them don't have their landing gear out, which they would at that height.

[–]TwinZeroSeven 5 points6 points ago

I got my instrument rating in that exact Cessna. I'm almost certain it has never been outside of the US.

[–]Patrickthedoody 98 points99 points ago

I can imagine it would be pretty damn terrifying if it were real.

[–]TheGenerico 7 points8 points ago

Came here to say this, Virgin Blue and SWA in the same picture...I don't think so.

[–]ItIsMarc 7 points8 points ago

They were in a hurry that day.

[–]apullin 10 points11 points ago

Every single one of these is going to be reposted individually over the next week.

[–]AngryByte 1 point2 points ago

Every single on of these is already a repost.

[–]mongooseondaloose 12 points13 points ago

I hate to be "that guy" but the Mt. Rainier shadow picture (although awesome) has been around since October of '11. So two thousand and late. http://www.komonews.com/weather/blogs/scott/132629943.html

[–]timotej 1 point2 points ago

The Salar de Uyuni (salt flats) photo is years old too, I used to have it as my desktop wallpaper.

Not that it matters, just sayin'.

[–]PhotoGladiator 9 points10 points ago

I expect one of these again in December.

[–]GrooGrux 6 points7 points ago

Um, don't you mean 01/01/13 00:01?

[–]laidymondegreen 3 points4 points ago

These are great, but I'll point out that several of them are definitely not from the first half of 2012. The shot of the rock formation in Texas is one I recall sending to a friend a year or two ago, and there are several others that I know I've been seeing for quite a while.

[–]Georgeocurtis 15 points16 points ago

Hey look, overlord manatee.

That meme was so funny.

[–]calex924 2 points3 points ago

I had my first date with my girlfriend at the capilano suspension bridge in Vancouver. Such an amazing place!

[–]bigsaucybob 3 points4 points ago

All great pictures.

That stinging bee picture will always be one of my favorites.

[–]bossstms 4 points5 points ago

I remember reading that honey bees are the only type of bees to die after stinging ... kinda weird way to die, using your one and only "survival" apparatus.

[–]Doctor_of_Recreation 4 points5 points ago

This isn't actually a "survival" apparatus, but rather a "protect the queen and the colony" apparatus.

Worker bees are sterile, I believe, and can't actually reproduce on their own, so they have been biologically programmed to protect the members of their hive that can reproduce: the queen and her drones. The worker bee doesn't live for himself, he lives for the colony, so killing himself in defense of the colony isn't that far of a stretch.

[–]bossstms 1 point2 points ago

It's people like you that makes Reddit so nice ... you just TIL'ed my reply. Thanks !

[–]iamthedisk4 1 point2 points ago

Just like to add that it's she, not he, as all worker bees (and ants for that matter) are female.

[–]jking11 2 points3 points ago

I need to get a better camera.

[–]cobracards 3 points4 points ago

Switzerland gets a fantastic run. Geneva, Bern, Matterhorn.

[–]CitizenFord 2 points3 points ago

[–]forbenius 6 points7 points ago

no, but relevant: http://i.imgur.com/tvQtN.jpg

[–]lordwinks 2 points3 points ago

this is the best I could find.

[–]Delaywaves 2 points3 points ago

Anyone know where the bridge in #13 is?

[–]Onyx1010 6 points7 points ago

North side of Vancouver in BC, Canada. Not that far out of the city, quite an amazing park. Picture doesn't really give you a grasp of how high up you are...

[–]A_Loki_In_Your_Mind 5 points6 points ago

As a Vancouverite I find it funny how the picture struck me as nothing special. Now that I think of it the bridge is rather spectacular.

[–]what_a_douche 4 points5 points ago

Hah I thought the same thing. I guess it is amazing if you're not a local. If you are a local you just view it as the way over-priced tourist trap that impedes the flow of traffic on Capilano rd.

[–]akatsuki_guy 2 points3 points ago

Thank you very much. It's all so amazing.

[–]MrWhisples 2 points3 points ago

The moon bridge always reminds me of Scooby Doo

[–]chemin00 2 points3 points ago

What kind of camera has such great quality and water proof?

[–]unladenswallow 9 points10 points ago

[–]FussyCashew 10 points11 points ago

Actually, by ripping images off of a post on a blog, without source.

Source.

[–]I_will_fix_this 4 points5 points ago

Picture 11 makes me want to play Minecraft for some reason.

[–]horsepoop 3 points4 points ago

That whale is so mind blowing. Amazing that such creatures exist. Can´t believe we are actually killing them...

Is that one in higher res?

[–]aweg 6 points7 points ago

That one is so NOPENOPENOPE to me, much more so than a photo of a spider ever will be. Just the ocean in general, there's no fucking telling what things could be down in the deeps that we might never see in our life times. I am simultaneously amazed and terrified of that one thought!

[–]jazzcatdrp 1 point2 points ago

[–]Goomb 1 point2 points ago

[–]JSA17 1 point2 points ago

For some reason the picture of all the kayaks made me feel almost claustrophobic.

[–]gfgmalty 1 point2 points ago

Hey I went to the bridge in Vancouver on spring break! WOO

[–]tree_hugger9 1 point2 points ago

I'm not sure where exactly the Above the Canopy photo was taken, but when I took a trip to Lushan I saw many of these in the hills... they're decorated cell towers. :)

Basically... Switzerland is the most beautiful country?

The "precious blue marble" one is shopped. If it was real, South America would wrap halfway around the back, where Asia/Africa are.

[–]brightvette 1 point2 points ago

Haha. My Grandpa emailed me this. I Google image searched the first photo and it's from 2011. THIS GALLERY IS A LIE.

Bora Bora is a blatant copy of Panau.

[–]justonecomment 1 point2 points ago

Felix Baumgartner, that thing actually happened? I was looking forward to it but never heard about it actually being done.

Or in other words, /r/earthporn's frontpage in the last months.

That airplane one is NOT from 2012; I've had it on my hard drive since at least '09.

[–]iruber1337 1 point2 points ago

Many of these photos are not from 2012. For example: The Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve, Gásadalur Village in the Faroe Islands, Maelstrom at Kauai, Hawaii (this was even a runner up in last year nature photography contest), Serenity now, and Seal were posted here in 2011, most in /r/earthporn (I collect quite a few photos and confirmed the dates).

Pretty sure I've been seeing that devil rays picture for years there's no way it's from 2012.

[–]draxxis 1 point2 points ago

Wasn't the airplanes thing photoshopped? I remember reading controversy about it.

"Yarn-bombing a bus in Mexico City"

Since when do buses in Mexico, or anywhere in Latin America for that matter, have Japanese characters written on them? I'm calling shenanigans...

You're not fooling anyone, Mr. Cell Phone Tower

[–]Kraeten 1 point2 points ago

There's a wonderful story behind each and every one of these pictures that I wish I had full access to. These are all just breathtaking.

God the world is such an amazing place, here we are the only known intelligent life forms in the known universe and our biggest worries are we paid our bills or work in the morning, i never want to be forced to settle down, i never want to work in an office for half my life then waste away for the other half. I want to travel and see all these beautiful sights and explore our beautiful world.

I have an unbelievable urge to take a ride a vintage locomotive down those overgrown railroad tracks.

a restored locomotive powered by electric of course (or diesel electric more realistically), because coal powered trains are very dirty.
