During World War II, the allies developed a Pigeon-Guided Bomb. Basically, the pigeons were trained to peck at the target on a recon photo. Then, they would be strapped in the bomb with lenses showing the "floor", and as the bomb fell, they would peck towards the target just like they learned with the photos, and guide the missile. There were three of them so that if one was wrong, the other two would override it. source

Side note: I wonder how long it takes for the blacked-out SUVs to get to my house after searching for "pigeons nuclear bomb" in Google.

I know this is supposed to be funny, and it is, but it was also very cool for me to see this, as my grandfather was in the pigeon company in the Army in WWII. Although we talked about his experience, I never wondered what it would have looked like when the guys were actually transporting pigeons. Cool.

My father bought a pigeon crate in the 50's from a surplus store when he was a kid. This is a picture of it. If your grandfather was in the Signal Corp, there's a good chance they used crates identical to this.

The brass plate says "Signal Corp-US Army Cage PG-50 Phila-43"

Yep, he was in the Signal Corp. Thanks for reminding me of the proper name. Somewhere I have a report I did in the 4th grade about him. We had to interview a veteran—I asked him lots of questions and he showed me all his old memorabilia. If only I could do that now with all the knowledge I've gained about life and war since becoming an adult. Unfortunately he passed away over 20 years ago. :(
