Car bomb (i.imgur.com)
submitted 1 month ago by I_must_not_FAP
[–]WhiteSix 665 points666 points667 points 1 month ago
This was a VBIED that was detonated outside of Camp Taji/Camp Cooke 45 minutes north of Baghdad on Highway 1. Killed 3 or 4 Iraqi Army soldiers and some civilians coming in for work. No US service members were at that entrance. The truck used I believe was a sewage pump truck or "turd burglar" filled with old munitions and HME (Home-Made Explosives). The camera is on a closed overpass at US entrance to the FOB.
[–]280Z28 88 points89 points90 points 1 month ago
I had seen this gif before, but the comments were definitely new. Considering the size of that bomb and its intended purpose (killing people), in a way I'm glad to hear that many fewer people were impacted than I would have guessed. I'm also glad to hear that the video was used for more than getting Eek reactions online - I have no doubt that many lives have been saved from people remembering to not follow too closely in their convoys.
[–]WhiteSix 45 points46 points47 points 1 month ago
Well the Humvees in the video were Iraqi Army, and some of them you would have better luck training some of the kittens in r/aww. However I did not have the pleasure of working with that unit of IA. And with a lot of these comments, any video of this with "jihad music" is added after the fact. This was US security camera for the main gate.
[–]Roboterlein 25 points26 points27 points 1 month ago
I've seen this video along with instruction by some guys who train soldiers on IED's. We were told that the vehicle used was a standard dump truck packed with HME and munitions (like WhiteSix said). The truck was driven very slowly in order to cause a traffic jam and it really just makes for easier targeting/timing.
The first Humvee broke their distance discipline and drove waaaay too close to the dump truck in the first place. The two behind him did the same thing and all three of them got caught in the blast. Could have been prevented but... kittens in r/aww, right?

Vehicle Borne IED
[–]Quaytsar 37 points38 points39 points 1 month ago
Just as Massive Ordinance Air Blast bomb can also be Mother Of All Bombs, Vehicle Borne IED can be Very Big IED.

...And I'll make a GUI interface using Visual Basic to track where the blast came from

Is that the road they called Route Irish?
[–]WhiteSix 16 points17 points18 points 1 month ago
No, Route Tampa. Goes from Kuwait to Turkey.
[–]2ndgirlfromtheleft 209 points210 points211 points 1 month ago
Found the video on youtube, slow motion
ninja edit: not really slow motion, just a little longer than the gif.
[–]glassuser 78 points79 points80 points 1 month ago
Good illustration of the tactics used to compress the convoy.
[–]KousKous 22 points23 points24 points 1 month ago
Man, what a nightmarish scenario. There's so many reasons a truck like that might slow down, but if you pick wrong either you die or you kill an innocent person. And then, of course, if the bomb's sophisticated enough, you die anyway.
[–]Roboterlein 29 points30 points31 points 1 month ago
The Humvees could have avoided destruction if they'd maintained their prescribed distance discipline but, when the dump truck slowed, they broke distance and drove up close to it, causing all of them to get hit by the explosion. Complacency kills.
[–]Monsterwanker69 107 points108 points109 points 1 month ago*
what is a ninja edit? Edit: I wanted to see what the asterisk of shame looks like. Edit2: Oh thats shameful
[–]Neebat 67 points68 points69 points 1 month ago
Edit within the first 1-2 minutes doesn't trigger the asterisk of shame.
[–]bankholdup5 18 points19 points20 points 1 month ago
so then why put "edit:" at all? is it because of the honor system? still learning the ropes of reddit over here
[–]Stingray88 39 points40 points41 points 1 month ago
Adding the "edit:" is so people can follow how the actual conversation went easier. Not everyone notices the asterisk right away. For instance, if I made a long comment with one really racist sentence, then you went off on me for that sentence, and I then edited out the racist sentence... people could be confused as to what you were going on about.
This is also one of the reasons why people will frequently quote each other like this:
This way, no matter if you edit, your comment is saved forever.
[–]ichae 74 points75 points76 points 1 month ago
You people are all stupid for not knowing this.
Pardon me?
[–]Stingray88 60 points61 points62 points 1 month ago
Heh, if you were 4 minutes earlier, you could have been successful with this. But since your comment was made about 6 minutes after mine and my comment does not have an asterisk next to it... It's highly unlikely I pulled a ninja edit.

thanks for that. Does anyone know why the camera dies that much later after the shockwave? Kinda thought it would break with the shockwave or not at all
[–]Jokka42 33 points34 points35 points 1 month ago
I think it has to do with the damage done to the cable, probably a pole fell over and finally killed the line.
[–]icai 50 points51 points52 points 1 month ago
The first shockwave is from the ground (speed of sound is much higher in earth/rocks). Since the camera is mounted on a tower, it only shakes a little. The second blast wave/shockwave is air-borne and directly affects the camera.
[–]Fmeson 28 points29 points30 points 1 month ago*
The shock wave in the air would still be travelling at hundreds of miles per hour. The time stamp in the top left of the video shows that the delay between the explosion and the break up is about 14 seconds. This is consistent with an explosion that occurred about 3 miles away. However, explosive velocities are faster than the speed of sound in air.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosive_velocity
A more reasonable assumption would be that the explosive velocity in air is 2000m/s. If that were the case, the explosion would have to take place 17 miles away from the camera to account for the delay!
The real velocity of the shock wave over a distance will be somewhere between the explosive velocity and the speed of sound. Either way, the video breakup occurs well after the airbases shock wave hits the camera.
Furthermore, the time delay from when the ground based shock wave would hit to when the air based one hits will be quite small over the distance from the explosion to the camera. It should be orders of magnitude smaller than the 10 or so seconds shown between the shacking and the video break up.
In conclusion, the timing of the video rules out the idea the air-borne shock wave causes the video break up.
Edit: After further consideration, explaining the delay seems to be a quite interesting problem. If anyone has any links or ideas I would love to hear them.
[–]Registar 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago
The explosive velocity refers to the speed of the chemical detonation shockwave front inside the explosive, not the speed of the explosions's sound. In general it is faster than the speed of sound in the material itself. This will cause a sonic boom in the explosive material, but the boom will travel at the speed of sound.
In other words, the speed the acoustic shockwave travels in the air is the speed of sound in the air, since it is not the air that is exploding here.
[–]SkaFreak 6 points7 points8 points 1 month ago
Yup, you are pretty much correct. The explosive velocity they speak of is how fast the shock front travels in the explosive, and it is so high because the chemical reaction keeps putting in energy to keep it that high. Initially, this shock will pass into any adjacent medium and may speed up or slow down a little bit depending on the shock impedance.
Once it is in the new medium (in this case air), it will begin to degrade back down to the speed of sound since there is no longer chemical energy being imparted to keep it above. Initially, this will travel for a certain distance above the speed of sound, but it will attenuate over distance to a simple acoustic wave instead of a true shock wave. At this distance, it will have gone through this attenuation and will be traveling at the speed of sound. The more dense a material is, the easier it is for the particles to transmit the shock, resulting in less attenuation.

From the YouTube description: "cowardly insurgent scum" blowing up the convoy.
Like it or not, I'm sure the British military during the revolutionary war were saying similar things about the American militias. When you're the underpowered group by far, cowardly is the imperial way of saying "effective against us or our allies"
[–]KickAssCommie 16 points17 points18 points 1 month ago
These geurilla/terror tactics are the only effective way to overcome tremendous odds. The idea is to inflict high damage with minimal casualties and that's what they're doing.
[–]PenName 34 points35 points36 points 1 month ago
Exactly. A few years ago, GW Bush compared the Iraq war to the American Revolution, but failed to note that the Iraqis were the smaller, scrappy force fighting with unorthodox tactics against a technologically/numerically superior foe.
[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 14 points15 points16 points 1 month ago
...who was occupying their country.
[–]kennyp28 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago
Most Iraqi's were either ambivalent or supported the new government. It was not a popular insurgency.
[–]Epistaxis 143 points144 points145 points 1 month ago
Cowardly insurgent scum igniting a huge bomb that takes out some Iraqi Police Humvees and occupants.
With all due respect to the people who lost their lives... there are lots of words one could use for someone who blows himself up, but "cowardly" seems like just about the least applicable of them.

[–]Gimli_The_Dwarf 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago
Agreed on them not being cowardly, but my big issue around all the 9/11 rhetoric was everyone calling it a "brilliant plan" - it wasn't "brilliant." It was so freaking obvious that Tom Clancy wrote about it ten years earlier, and it was in an episode of The Lone Gunmen just six months before the attack.
"Seize an airliner, crash it into a large building" - not rocket science.
[–]the_anti-anti 108 points109 points110 points 1 month ago
I realize that this is in Iraq, but do people conveniently forget that the Afghan-Mujaheddin were expertly trained to use IEDs against the Red Army during the Soviet-Afghan War, with stunning effect, by the CIA. Now all of a sudden when our soldiers are killed by them it's "cowardly terrorism."
[–]Kiresays 37 points38 points39 points 1 month ago

[–]baramba24 14 points15 points16 points 1 month ago
To be fair, it was cowardly then too. So are land mines. Most of the world has signed an agreement not to use land mines actually.. Well except for the people most likely to use them (the usa, russia, iran and china to name a few)
[–]chris3110 12 points13 points14 points 1 month ago
Drones are even more cowardly aren't they?
[–]hhmmmm 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago
Except that at least drones are somewhat targeted. Landmines are indiscriminate and last far longer than the conflict.
[–]dja0794 17 points18 points19 points 1 month ago
This clears it up a bit, the bomb was in the dump truck which slowed down forcing the convoy behind it to slow down and clump together. The driver of the truck pulled over as if to let the convoy pass and as soon as they started to go by, detonated it. Fucking sick.
[–]57Chevy 475 points476 points477 points 1 month ago
When they say that people get hit with roadside IEDs, is this typically the size that they are talking about? That was horrifying. I couldn't imagine the carnage of something like that blowing up in a crowd of people.
[–]Organic_Dixon_Cider 557 points558 points559 points 1 month ago
I'm not an expert but I've personally seen 40-50 IEDs go off. From 6 lbs to 80 lbs, most were 40 lbs. That one was easily over 80 lbs, unless it was just mixed and packed extremely well.

Some how my truck was never hit. Me and my driver were the luckiest marines in our AO. EVERY other truck had at least 3 hits. (By truck I mean the marines inside.)
[–]sparklyteenvampire 5 points6 points7 points 1 month ago
What was the casualty rate when that happened? Did those hits usually kill or hurt somebody? Thanks for going through that, man, I can't imagine what it must have been like.
[–]Organic_Dixon_Cider 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago
Inside the truck you are pretty safe. As long as you are wearing your 5 point harness and have everything strapped down. Most common was a concussion. We had a guy break his eye socket on the .50 and if you had a joint against the walls, the vibration can shatter it. We didn't have a single KIA inside a truck.
Our plt casualty rate was 25-30%. Most were concussions, a few from shrapnel, the guy that broke his eye socket, and one BK.
[–]Constam 7 points8 points9 points 1 month ago
Just out of curiosity, how have you seen that many? And has it all been in video or have you seen them in person too?
[–]Organic_Dixon_Cider 12 points13 points14 points 1 month ago
All in person. We were losing 2-3 trucks per week. A few were controlled dets of ones we found.
[–]Putnam14 3 points4 points5 points 1 month ago
Holy shit, you lost that many trucks? I thought route clearance did better than that. I would think 1 truck/month max and then you fire your route clearance and get better guys. Fuck, IEDs are scary.

Depends on what's buried and how many they bury. A couple of 105mm artillery shells can make quite a bang.
[–]sally_rotten_crotch 60 points61 points62 points 1 month ago
From my experience, one 105 is too fuckin much
[–]OnceInATre0n 19 points20 points21 points 1 month ago
I watched an M101 fire off a blank shell at a museum demonstration. It was like a whole music concert's worth of noise in a quarter-second. Fuck that.
[–]TheAughtSpectrum 9 points10 points11 points 1 month ago
I don't know how it works with blank shells of that size, but I know blank rounds for most guns are much louder than firing a regular bullet.
[–]Marcoos 9 points10 points11 points 1 month ago
While you may be correct for most guns, for the standard NATO 5.56mm live and blank rounds, the live round is MUCH louder.

Artillery shells are quite easy to come by in Iraq/Afghanistan, you forget that between the Iraq/Iran war, and the Afghan USSR war, there where shells stockpiled everywhere.
[–]cenobyte40k 18 points19 points20 points 1 month ago
it's not TNT most likely. We have either a truck full of Ammonium nitrate (Fertilizer) and fuel oil (Think Oklahoma city), or military grade explosive stolen/bought from neighbors friendly to their cause.
[–]trampus1 18 points19 points20 points 1 month ago
I think it's bad that it's so hard to tell the difference between something made out of shit you can buy anywhere and military grade explosives.
[–]This_isgonnahurt 14 points15 points16 points 1 month ago
I think it's bad
Better that then having to be psychologically approved to purchase fertilizer though.

You try personally getting your hands on that much ammonium nitrate, you're gonna have a bad time.
[–]cheml0vin 6 points7 points8 points 1 month ago
You usually can tell. Look at the smoke. In this video, the smoke is black or grey indicating a reaction that isn't very efficient. Military grade explosives like C4 usually have white smoke.

I've been in uparmored trucks hit by IEDS and Car Bombs. None where ever this big.
You can't tell if it's an IED or a Car Bomb. Although technically a car bomb is just a type of IED. Car bombs can hold more concealed explosive material so they are typically bigger. This seems too large for a car bomb, although it may be possible if this thing was stuffed and the explosives were much better than the typical trash they had.
EDIT: I've seen them do controlled detonations of hundreds of old munitions (artillery shells, mostly) and this explosion rivals those. I'm not saying this is inaccurate but if true would represent the far right bell curve for intensity/frequency of car bomb explosions.
EDIT2: I see the post where someone has identified this as a sewage truck. That would make sense given how large the explosion is in this imagine. All that extra space filled with munitions, terrible.
[–]HelpfulToAll 6 points7 points8 points 1 month ago
Can you describe what it's like to get hit with an IED?
[–]walesmd 41 points42 points43 points 1 month ago
Hit in '08 by a modified RPG that was remotely detonated. I remember an insanely loud sound, then this vacuum-like feeling - kind of felt like all the air was being sucked out of my head through my ears and I remember being tossed around in the truck like a ragdoll, dirt and shit flying everywhere. Then I woke up in another truck wondering WTF happened, my back was killing me and I couldn't hear shit.
Ultimately, no real damage - shockwave just screwed my back up and I have back spasms now. Fucked our truck up pretty serious but at this point in the war we were so uparmored something as small as a grenade was going to be too impressive.
[–]HelpfulToAll 8 points9 points10 points 1 month ago
Damn...I'm glad you're ok.
[–]MyHotelCalifornia 13 points14 points15 points 1 month ago
They try to tell you in training that you can spot an IED beforehand. They actually had us training in 0 degree weather in NJ practicing throwing sticks with white flags attached at the ground when we see prop IEDs in the snow. That was such a joke. When we got to Kuwait they were a bit more realistic. Some IEDs were more obvious than others but for the most part you don't see them coming. We were actually able to spot some car bombs later in our tour due to the weight of the shells causing the cars to ride incredibly low on the suspension.
What typically happens is you are driving down the road running whatever mission you may be on, when all of a sudden you hear a massive BOOM. Depending on how close you are, what direction you are facing, how powerful the explosion, what mission you are on, etc will determine what happens next. You should know by this point in your military career that after an IED may come secondary attacks/explosions/ambushes, etc. You need to do a combination of things immediately. Squad leaders need to radio in the attack/decide to stay or go, team leaders need to check their team/equipment and report the condition to the squad leader, drivers need to assess the condition of their vehicles and navigate either debris or position for security, gunners need to pull security immediately. The blasts range from not feeling anything major, to being knocked out and suffering lasting brain damage your whole life. You don't see the sharpnel flying in the air. You may see a dust cloud and lots of debris scattered everywhere, dirt raining down, etc. You are so focused on making sure everyone is okay and trying to protect yourselves from a second attack that you only notice things like, the truck in front of you has 2 flat tires that will need to be changed before you go back to base but it looks functional which bodes well for those inside. Then you notice the gunner in that truck has switched out with the team leader. You wonder how bad the gunner must have been hurt. You wait for the radio call from that truck with the status. Everyone okays, thank god. No secondary attack came, you just keep driving and pretend like nothing happened. Pull off at the next safe area (~1.5 miles in this case). Change the tires and do further assessment/medical treatment. Get Ice Cream.
Another time I'm in the gunner position when a car bomb targets my truck. We are driving down a nicer neighborhood, heading from one Iraqi Police station to another when it goes off. Loudest thing I've ever heard. My truck was hammered, and I was tossed around the top a bit, but not too bad. Immediately I take cover from shrapnel/small arms fire, mount the gun, switch from amber to red, and look for threats. The driver immediately stops the truck. The road was mostly empty and we were in a good area to stop, there was no secondary attack so we swung the back trucks around to pull security on my truck while we figured out if it was functional. Some helicopters were in the area and buzzed us a few times for support a couple minutes later. No one was hurt from our team but about 3-4 local Iraqis had minor wounds which we treated before leaving. Somehow there was no damage to the truck, which I still don't understand. The car left a crater in the ground and the black twisted mangled frame was a couple feet from where it started and there were pieces everywhere. Anything can happen after that initial explosion that each IED blast is so unique. You can get lucky and have all vehicles fully functioning, or you could have a vehicle get disabled. You are much more likely to have a secondary attack performed on you if the first achieved some level of success. You don't want to be stuck in a bad neighborhood away from friendlies with a disabled truck pulling security while waiting for QRF (quick reactionary force, aka the guys on standby) to come rolling in 20 minutes later. 20 minutes is a very long time to be stationary.

The video is real. We watched it during training a couple of years ago. It is a vehicle-borne-IED. There is a longer version of the video where you can see the front vehicle truck slowing down to make the humvees slow down and bunch together to make the IED more effective. It is a reqruiting video and in the longer version we watched you can hear the insurgent chanting allah-akhbar etc. If I'm not mistaken there is also jihadi-music being played. The lesson learned was keep your distance even if the going is slow in high-risk areas.

The Talibans in Afghanistan produce their own jihadist music with lyrics like "young hero, you're the atom bomb of the Muslim world, you disintegrate yourself for love of your religion."
Stores in Kabul sell the songs as ringtones to make passing through Taliban roadblocks easier.

it's interesting that while the driver slowed down the column of vehicles, at the last second, he swerves off the road to the right in what appears to be an effort to maximize blast exposure.
[–]raging_asshole 63 points64 points65 points 1 month ago
The people who died in the vehicle probably had no idea that anything even happened though, right? I mean, doesn't that happen so quickly that the passengers went from perfectly fine to dead before they could even begin to realize that something was amiss? Or would they feel that shockwave and hear the beginning of a clap first?
[–]MacNamedDre 53 points54 points55 points 1 month ago
They might have felt or hear id at first. But even so they probably died before they even knew something was wrong.
[–]BadDatingAdvice 58 points59 points60 points 1 month ago
Actually, the shockwaves can move faster than your neurons can transmit. If they were close, their bodies may have been destroyed before they even felt/heard/saw anything.

Not to be too morbid, but anybody who has experienced a blast like that isn't giving much input any more.
[–]DefinitelyRelephant 13 points14 points15 points 1 month ago
Veteran here, when you're that close to an explosion the compression wave hits before you have a chance to know what's going on.
You go from fine to blacked out completely instantly. Even if you don't die, even if someone drags you out of the vehicle, you're gonna be unconscious with a severe traumatic brain injury, clear fluid leaking out your ears, no or little pupil response to light shined in it, etc.
Being that close is pretty much "instant" death. I put it in quotations because while your heart may or may not stop right that moment, your brain is shut off almost immediately.

Improvised explosive device. and probably iraq.
[–]CtrlC_plus_CtrlV 1322 points1323 points1324 points 1 month ago
That was a military convoy with a remote detonated roadside IED. IEDs aren't just a bunch of explosives wired up. These things can be very intricate and very powerful. I once had a pile of scrap that measured 4x4 feet with assorted parts that was once a humvee with three Marines in it. The only things left of them were teeth.
Most likely this IED was an undetonated warhead that they managed to arm. (Lead truck looked like a 5 or 7 ton truck followed by a Hummer)
Now when I get home I'm going to have a stiff drink and think of my fallen friends.
[–]0311 73 points74 points75 points 1 month ago*
We found a hollowed out sign in the middle of the road (probably half a foot wide) that was stuffed with about 30-40 pounds of plastic. That shit made a big boom.
EDIT: And scared the shit out of us, too...our platoon sergeant found it when he saw a little blinking light on the sign...walked right up to it before he realized what it was. Luckily, they must not have had a watcher on it at the time.
[–]matsky 28 points29 points30 points 1 month ago*
That's one casually told, "so I came that close to being dead," story.
Fuck, man, I'd never be able to look at an alarm clock again.
[–]farkdog 51 points52 points53 points 1 month ago
If I ever build a bomb, I'm for sure not going to put blinking lights on it to, you know, let everyone know it's there.
[–]HonorAmongSteves 12 points13 points14 points 1 month ago
It's because they use cell phones and watches for remote and timed triggers.
[–]mickey_oneil_0311 115 points116 points117 points 1 month ago
ok, you're wrong.
this was a vbied. that lead truck that you can't identify as a 5 or 7 ton is the vbied. who the fuck leads a convoy with a 5 ton? notice that the truck is pulling over to the side of the road just before he detonates to let the humvee catch up to him.
[–]CallMeDak 82 points83 points84 points 1 month ago
That's Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device for anyone that doesn't quite understand. The lead truck blew up.
[–]RedAero 86 points87 points88 points 1 month ago

[–]CallMeDak 20 points21 points22 points 1 month ago
In this case that would also apply.
[–]moeloubani 18 points19 points20 points 1 month ago
So this is basically the same thing as dropping a bomb from the air just a little more targeted?
[–]umdiddly 41 points42 points43 points 1 month ago
well, except with the air bomb you're going to be needing a 70 million dollar jet, a trained pilot (over $1 million), not to mention the cost of the actual ordinance and the logistical operating equipment.
The cost of an average IED however, is like.. what? scavenged warheads, or a sack of fertilizer and some saltpetre? plus some shit wires from radio shack and maybe a disposable nokia cell phone? What's that? $100
[–]Rhabarberbarbara 249 points250 points251 points 1 month ago
prolly less cause you could reuse the Nokia ...

[–]LanceCoolie 196 points197 points198 points 1 month ago
IEDs aren't just a bunch of explosives wired up.
Well, they kind of are, most of 'em anyways. Being improvised doesn't preclude intricacy or power. With the exception of the explosives/blasting caps, most of the components of the ones we encountered were stuff you could buy at your average hardware or electronic store.
[–]NoNeedForAName 442 points443 points444 points 1 month ago
I think what he meant was just that IEDs aren't always just a bunch of crap thrown together. I'd imagine that plenty of people hear "IED" and just picture a pipe bomb and some batteries stuffed in a dead camel or something, rather than a "real" bomb.
[–]bobbert182 314 points315 points316 points 1 month ago

That was a dark, dark scene. On one side we had the interrogation scene which showed the more "anarchist" side of Joker and on the other, the one you referred to, which perfectly showed how fucking insane he was. Think about it for a second... he took a guy (who I'm sure was a patient from Arkham), cut him open and put a bomb inside him. AND he told the patient that he would go inside and replace "them" with bright lights... like fucking Christmas...

Why a look of disapproval? He is serious. Placing IEDs in dead animals was not unheard of, although it certainly wasn't common practice.
[–]cheml0vin 33 points34 points35 points 1 month ago
You thought they smelled bad on the outside.
[–]mrthbrd 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago
Sounds like a pretty good place to hide a bomb to me, honestly. Easier than digging or whatever else you'd have to do otherwise. Plenty of space, too.
[–]LanceCoolie 17 points18 points19 points 1 month ago
Technically, that would qualify too. If you're a regular guy, and you build something that explodes, it's an IED. The pre-deployment training we received included samples from the size of a soda can all the way up to a trunk-load of 155mm artillery shells and propane tanks.
[–]dtox12 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
Obviously, they come in all shapes and sizes. That's why they are so damn hard to spot and deal with.
CtrlC is just combating the perception that they "don't" come in all shapes and sizes, since many people imagine a smaller device - not something like we see in the GIF.
[–]jockoj 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago
Yeah, IED is "Improvised Explosive Device", it makes it sound like a washing machine is turned into a bomb. Artillery shells are already explosive devices. They should be called "Modified Explosive Devices."
[–]farkdog 4 points5 points6 points 1 month ago
I'm going to jump in here, though there are lots of people trying to split hairs when it is obvious what the guy is saying.
Yes, every single explosive device ever is just a bunch of explosives wired up.
What he is saying is that these kinds of bombs are probably made using manufactured warheads, and not something made out of pieces of pipe and fertilizer.
[–]gr33nspan 9 points10 points11 points 1 month ago
A lot of times they're just artillery rounds with wires sticking out of them so my exact description of IEDs would be a bunch of explosives wired up.
[–]Charl3magne 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago

Old video, here is the link by simply typing in Vbied in youtube... its #1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4uJFQZ96eI
as for what happens, it looks like the truck in the font was the bomb and it waited till the convoy bunched up behind it, then it pulls to the side to let them pass and then detonates. With a truck like this you are able to stash as much explosives as you want. Im sure none of the people in that convoy survived, the aftershock wave alone can kill. pretty sad.
[–]sarrone28 11 points12 points13 points 1 month ago
They showed us this video when I was in basic training only from a different angle. What happened here was there was a dump truck stuffed to the gills with C-4. What you can't see in this video is that behind the truck there are 4 or 5 hummers lined up super close behind the truck. This is a classic example of why spacing is important between vehicles when in Afghanistan. My Drill sgt. told us that that particular explosion would of easily cleared a city block.
[–]cheml0vin 2 points3 points4 points 1 month ago
No way this is C4, C4 burns with white smoke.
