I LOVE BABY BATS IN BLANKIES. My BF has even figured out that baby bats make me go squee. At first he did not understand, but when i am perhaps feeling a little sad, he only needs to say the word baby bats and it will make me feel a little more happy.

This particular species, which I prefer is a fox bat. This bit of info is really interesting. http://www.awf.org/content/wildlife/detail/bat Without bats, our world would be hell without them. There is one thing that is alarming, and I don't mean to derail the cuteness factor of this thread. I always wonder how they'll survive when faced with White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a poorly understood disease associated with the deaths of at least 5.7 million to 6.7 million North American bats. Its killed so many. :( Sorry, back to cuteness, I just like to be educated on animals, and share information.

Your daughter is my friend. Whenever i see an animal, i want to pet it. My BF has figured out i want to pet everything. So when we go to the zoo, our conversations are like this: Me:"OOOO a wallaby". BF: "You wanna pet it dont you?" Me: "Oh Yes, i bet it is so soft, and to pet that belly fur and give it a kiss between the ears!".

This has then lead to our new comment when there is a desire to pet a wild animal. (i do the first part, animal does the second part) examples: Lion: pet pet pet; bite bite bite. Kangaroo: pet pet pet; kick kick kick.

I also hope your daughter gets to pet the crap out of a few animals. Loving animals is a great thing.

Agreed. I saw an old lady on tv with one of those small black and white monkeys as a pet. It wore a diaper and got into trouble all the time. They live to be around 45, but forever act like a two year old. O.o fuck that.

yeah that is the basic reason for never wanting a monkey. I have a conure, and seriously, after having him almost 15 years, i am ready to drown him with the amount so screaming he does (dont worry reddit, i wont drown the bird!). I have decided to not have any more parrot type birds. i think parakeets are about as parot as i will get.

They make a sound that I would not what to be part of my household.

One flew into our office recently, I got pretty close while catching it and found the sound to be unlike anything I'd heard. It was closer to a click than a squeal or chirp, but had a piercing quality that felt like it'd give me a headache in no time.

Does anyone know why rabies is so much more common in North American bats than anywhere else in the world?

I'd never hold a bat here in the States because of the (admittedly very small) risk.

Every post I've ever seen on reddit showing someone holding a bat starts out with someone warning them that it's a really bad idea- then the person in the pictures mentions they are in England or wherever and the person doing the warning goes "ahh ok".

So- in answer to your question- no I don't know that it is more common, but people on reddit seem to get more concerned about North American bats than European ones.

Britain's an island and we literally locked up any animal coming into the country for 40 days to see if it had rabies. Very recently it's become possible to get your pet tested for rabies, prove it doesn't have it, and bring it in without going through quarantine.

Well, I can't remember if there was vaccination which would explain everything but really just animals that were seen to be rabid were destroyed and dogs were muzzled. IIRC, the last human rabies death from a UK animal was something crazy like 1902. You get the odd case where a bat is blown across from France but that's vanishingly rare.

When I was around 13 years old, I came back home and noticed something that looked like a frog on our driveway. I quickly realized it was a little bat and found out later it was very common to Southern California. He wasn't moving much and seemed dehydrated/hungry and unable to fly.

I had rescued birds before so I applied the same tactics and stayed up most the night with the bat keeping him warm. I put him in a shoebox with clean fabric, put my heat rock next to one side of the box, and fed him liquid dry dog food. He ate periodically and was able to drink water. In the morning, my mother and I drove ~30 minutes to a bat rescue center and handed him over.

It was pretty cool seeing him eat meal worms and they told us he was in good health and would likely recover. It was pretty awesome being able to handle one and spend some time helping keep him alive. I miss my bat.
