If there is no WWII, do I ever get born? Probably not?

[–]DisapprovingSeal 38 points39 points ago

Same boat. I'll take the money

[–]DisapprovingSeal 6 points7 points ago

But... It already happened

Edit: misunderstood you. But no world war doesn't mean no war.

[–]ApologeticCanadian 16 points17 points ago

Not even just that. Who knows what might have happened if WWI didn't occur. Maybe the war happened 30 years later and killed everyone; maybe a Utopian society was created from the ashes. Who really knows.

The future turned out all right. Preventing WWII would be too big of a risk.

[–]Notsoseriousone 0 points1 point ago

The future turned into the present.

Fixed that for you.

[–]estburt 9 points10 points ago

You never existed. There is no Pepe Silvia.

[–]amazingmao 1 point2 points ago

"This office is a goddam ghost town!"

[–]Mr_Mimiseku 0 points1 point ago

That's heavy.

[–]Dukuz 0 points1 point ago

That is what I was thinking, that is too big of an event to change. Would screw everything up.

[–]nacho-bitch 1 point2 points ago

This was exactly where my mind went too. My grandmother's first love died in WWII. Going by the letters he sent her he wanted to marry her when he got back. But he never came back so she ended up marrying my grandfather.

[–]IntentionallyRude 17 points18 points ago

That must have been a tough one for the Jews.

[–]Sal_Bandaid 1 point2 points ago

You sir, have just made my night.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points ago

zing!

[–]Shift-Slasher 24 points25 points ago

Preventing WW2 would mean that our technology would be ages behind what it is now, and also the world would not be the same place.

If nobody had ever fired a nuclear weapon, would we be so reluctant to do so nowadays?

[–]Ghooble 9 points10 points ago

This. As sad as the war was, it was pretty huge in terms of helping our technology, economy, and work force D: Necessary but depressing happenstance.

[–]desolatemindspace 2 points3 points ago

fucking this right the fuck here.

[–]smith224 1 point2 points ago

Plus WW2 pushed the USA out of the depression. Who knows where we(american) would be if not for the axis powers craziness.

[–]LazyNecromancer 1 point2 points ago

Yeah This. If Germany hadn't gone to war '39 you could of ended up with WW2 still happening (not neccesarily witht the same sides), but starting 30 years later with both sides being nuclear-equipped.

The fact that human civlisation didn't end up in a self induced nuclear fireball was a very knife edge thing, given the opportunity I wouldn't do any time travel back further than the fall of the Soviet Union for fear of tipping things over the edge.

[–]Notsoseriousone 1 point2 points ago

I just say no time travel period, to be honest. Don't mess with the continuum. It's a nice, known, relatively decent one.

[–]sl33tbl1nd 13 points14 points ago

Messing with a major event like that is a bad idea. The money is a far better option.

[–]thesnakeinthegarden 7 points8 points ago

Don't fuck with time travel.

[–]just_another_ant 16 points17 points ago

If you prevent WWII...the Nazis win?

[–]yangx 2 points3 points ago

Would America still be a superpower? Will we have the technology we have today that was made possible by war research?

[–]GeneRottenberry 7 points8 points ago

Imagine how Hitler feels.

[–]scottschism 3 points4 points ago

if we stop WWII then there wouldn't be any jews anymore

[–]MrDudeRI 4 points5 points ago

'Stop' isn't the same as 'Prevent'.

[–]cHuZhEe 0 points1 point ago

Still we could prevent WWII and still millions of Jews would of died.

[–]Milkgunner -3 points-2 points ago

No shit, people die all the time. During those over 60 years a lot of jews would have died.

[–]zeroblahz 0 points1 point ago

Hes saying the holocaust could of happened regardless of wether wwII happened

[–]sturdyballs 2 points3 points ago

What app is that?

[–]kilo92 1 point2 points ago

"You Rather" not to be confused with "Would you rather"

[–]sturdyballs 0 points1 point ago

Thanks

[–]TheWhite2086 4 points5 points ago

Downvoted for repost and stupidity. We have no idea what the world would be like without WWII, for all we know, one of the millions killed in that war may have gone on to be a president who actually ordered the launch of a massive nuclear war. Any number of people wouldn't have met each other leaving uncounted people unborn who will go on to do any number of things both good and bad... Nope, I'm going to choose the option that doesn't have the chance of destroying the entire world as we know it instead of just going with the obvious choice without thinking about it

[–]plainsnailing 0 points1 point ago

Its for the best. If it had been prevented, then it would have been postponed for only so long, by which point both sides would have fully militarised nuclear detonations. The deaths would have risen higher and we may not have live through it.

[–]k1w1999 0 points1 point ago

Wow only one bar? I feel for ya.

[–]GreyEarth 0 points1 point ago

Cant prevent something that's already happened and long over, may as well take the cash, right ?

[–]AshyBooRawrs 1 point2 points ago

People chose the money option because they probably need it. (not always the case) WWII was terrible, but it was in the past, and money would be more helpful than preventing a war from decades ago.

[–]BurningMelon 0 points1 point ago

Wenn wir nicht Zweiter Weltkrieg, würden wir Deutsch sprechen.

Please don't hate on poor translation; I took Japanese in high school, not German.

[–]Canvasch 1 point2 points ago

I would take the money. WWII already happened, and history as we know it could change in weird ways if it suddenly didn't happen. For one thing, I might never have been born.

[–]psychroclasm 0 points1 point ago

WWII was a good thing. It ended Hitler's campaign and saved a lot of lives (in the long run).

[–]revjeremyduncan 0 points1 point ago

Changing history is a bad idea. Things could wind up worse.

[–]AvatarJack 1 point2 points ago

I'd rather not potentially fuck up the world I know.

[–]bobbieluvsya 0 points1 point ago

I've seen enough fiction where people change the past and screw shit the hell up. I'll take the money and use that to change the future instead.

[–]cptstupendous 0 points1 point ago

OP has not watched enough sci fi.

[–]tclipse 1 point2 points ago

It would be different if they said WWIII... I hope.

[–]Fig1024 0 points1 point ago

Preventing WW2 would merely delay WW2. Unless "prevent" means the gift granter would eliminate humanity from face of the earth

[–]97bluelights 0 points1 point ago

That's WouldYouRather post #9 today...

[–]spacehamster42 0 points1 point ago

It would have been better to ask about preventing WW3.

[–]MezzaCorux 0 points1 point ago

WWII was significant variable in the Civil rights movement, now gimme my money

[–]xpwnagee 0 points1 point ago

Sad thing? Probably win a shit ton of money for preventing wwii

[–]DaRabidMonkey 0 points1 point ago

Just because WWII wouldn't have happened, it doesn't mean a different second "great war" wouldn't have happened soon after, or at least at some point.

[–]asdrnghuphna 0 points1 point ago

The world is currently in a not altogether shitty situation. I would rather have history play out as it did instead of tampering with it.

Besides, what does this entail? Does "avoiding WWII" mean "appease Hitler and let him take over peacefully"? Because it seems quite likely that would just result in the Third Reich still being around.

[–]dasher11 0 points1 point ago

Changing major events in history can have serious repercussions. World War II has shaped our entire-

Ah, fuck it. I pick the money because I'm not a Jew in 1939, I'm a broke college student in 2012!

[–]Kytopia 0 points1 point ago

Without WWII My grandparents would have never came here from England and had my mother who met my father who made me! So i choose money

[–]jakemyers7 0 points1 point ago

if there was no world war 2, would that mean we would have let hitler continue his reign?

[–]Mein_Tarnaccount 0 points1 point ago

38% are either lying, or already have enough money. 70 years ago, this question would have been a toughy.

[–]qlwest19 0 points1 point ago

Since WWII already happened fuck it I am getting paid.

[–]Slashmonkey 0 points1 point ago

If WWII never happened, not only would we have missed out on a huge number of scientific advancements, but there would be roughly 190 million more mouths to feed on this planet.. That's 5.5 times the population of Canada.

[–]lowerletters 0 points1 point ago

Two dollars would change my life. I'd have another bag of chips and be a lot happier.

I hope they all get two dollars if that ever happens

[–]Roomy 0 points1 point ago

That's a really tough one. Honestly we can never truly know what would've happened if WW2 never happened. I think Fascism might have been an inevitable part of humanity to go through, and I would've never wanted what happened in WW2 to have happened during a time when everyone else had nuclear missiles. Kind of like a Command and Conquer world where the war is just basically postponed and some other country ends up causing it with a militaristic fascist government force, but instead they also have nukes. There's no telling if it could've actually been worse, although it's hard to imagine much worse than what WW2 was...

So I would probably pick the money because I don't want to be responsible with altering time where it could possibly end up worse.

[–]Hawkell 0 points1 point ago

Didn't world war II also do a great deal for pulling the world out of the Great Depression? Not to mention the huge push in rocket and computer technology.

[–]Narrenschifff 0 points1 point ago

How do you know preventing WWII wouldn't result in an even bigger and more terrible clusterfuck eventually in Europe and Asia? The conditions were ripe. Ripe, I tells ya.

[–]CtrlC_plus_CtrlV -2 points-1 points ago

I'm with ya if Pokemon were real we could all have one, if super heroes were real only a select few could be one.

[–]Xepher01 -3 points-2 points ago

How about this?

[–]CurlTheSquirrel 4 points5 points ago

Over 6 million people died in the holocaust, this is MANY more than the people who died on 9/11. I'm not saying the 9/11 wasn't a huge national tragedy but in the end you save millions more lives by preventing the holocaust.

[–]Xepher01 0 points1 point ago

I thought it was sad that 26% had voted for 9/11, especially from so many voters. I guess I am misunderstood?

[–]CurlTheSquirrel 0 points1 point ago

Ahhh, I thought you were showing how bad it was that so many people voted for the holocaust. Yes, you were misunderstood.

[–]LAWLstudent_ -1 points0 points ago

So now we're ranking horrors based on the body count. Give me a break.

[–]MattyBallgame 0 points1 point ago

What should they be based on?

[–]LAWLstudent_ 0 points1 point ago

Nothing. It's all horrible. That's the point.

[–]MattyBallgame 0 points1 point ago

The point was a hypothetical question. Makes you think about how these situations can be quantified. How evil actions can be put into terms that can be compared. I'm curious on what your answer would be if you had to pick one to prevent and why.

[–]Duckdestroyer 0 points1 point ago

Read up about some of the repercussions of ww2 and where the world would be without it. At the very least a lot of time traveling fiction has covered several interesting scenarios. We don't have to talk about the effects of time traveling, morality of (not) changing things.

I would not want to change anything too far in the past. Without ww2 my grandparents would not have met.
