How I felt while watching the Jesus Camp documentary... (gifrific.com)

I always found this doc to be more terrifying than any news report about terrorism, climate change or global pandemics.
[–]Sit-Down_Comedian 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
Want to really piss your pants? That movie came out 6 years ago. That creepy midget preacher with the ugly rat tail is probably old enough to vote now...
[–]hollaback_girl 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Morgan Spurlock did a special last year about the best documentaries and he caught up with that kid. He's still evangelical, but he's not so "enthusiastic" about it anymore.
[–]kobayashimaru13 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Where can I find this?
[–]hollaback_girl 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
It was part of a thing for Current TV that counted down the top 50 docs of all time. It may be on their website.
[–]Sit-Down_Comedian 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
If only his youthful enthusiasm had been spent on something more productive...
[–]redbeardo 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
The producers/ directors, never ever actually say anything. They only ever show actual crazies saying crazy things.
[–]Bake3822 17 points18 points19 points 3 months ago
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religulous this will heal your wounds find this documentary and be happy
[–]Dominoes282 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
Yes I love this one. It has the famous senator IQ test question.
[–]abryant 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Oh, the look on his face...
[–]thetheist 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
I made it through both Jesus Camp and Religulous. I don't think I could ever watch either movie again. Jesus Camp due to the horrible people portrayed. That horrible woman that everybody hates, for example. You know, the obese one who tells people they're going to hell for gluttony.
And then there's Religulous. As an atheist and a casual Bill Maher fan, I thought I'd enjoy it. I think an honest movie on the subject has to go down one of two roads. Either it is a subjective stab at religion (the movie I wanted to see), or it is objective, and states premises, shows facts, and eventually makes a conclusion. Instead, Maher insists that it's objective ("I'm just asking questions"), while overtly mocking religion. It's the hypocrisy of this film that I cannot stand.
Essentially, he's preaching to the choir. He thinks that just because you agree with his conclusions, he is permitted to say anything and spurn reason. I do not recommend this movie.

My favorite part was the fat bitch, at the very beginning, saying there are two many "fat and lazy" adults, and then proceeds to talk about fasting.
[–]darkheart86 11 points12 points13 points 3 months ago
The holy bottled water is where I lost it.
[–]Waldinian 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
I always remember the kid with "Jesus peanut butter cups" shirt.
[–]pinkzebraprint 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
i fucking love all that kid's weird Jesus t-shirts. they're hilarious!
[–]GuidoinaSpeedo[S] 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Haha him and the little girl who aspires to be a nail stylist..because it would be the perfect opportunity to talk about Jesus. o__o
[–]DolphinGirl1120 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
Where does one watch this documentary?
[–]FragdaddyXXL 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
Netflix offers it via streaming. As for watching it for free, I have no clue.
[–]downtown_vancouver 9 points10 points11 points 3 months ago
There you go.
[–]AL1GN 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Wauw... very frightening.
[–]AverageGatsby91 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago

[–]cythrawll 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
it was on Netflix via streaming. I kept it for awhile and kept putting off watching it, now it's not available through streaming :<.
[–]LamdaComplex 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Youtube can serve it up as a rental. Also, someone has posted the movie in its entirety as well. I was watching in just a few minutes ago.

I watched it on Hulu
[–]AsylumTeaparty 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
My heart broke watching that. I wanted to save those children
[–]ToSlowImPro 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I know, it's just sad to see them lose their common sense.
[–]skirvy 8 points9 points10 points 3 months ago
That very documentary is what gave me the final push into atheism.
[–]zubie_wanders 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
I was watching it by myself, then my kids popped in, 8 and 12. I was a bit worried and then they were not understanding why the kids acted so stupid/crazy. My wife had gotten pulled into babtist revivals as a child and she explained how group mentality and conformity make a child not want to look out-of-place.
The kids just laughed it off, but I think it was an interesting learning experience for them. I'm so proud they are growing up as rationonal thinkers.
[–]nermid 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
I attended Catholic school for many years, so watching that was more or less like watching my junior high religion classes over again.
I feel like I was supposed to have a more potent reaction than, "Ugh. Not again."
[–]pokeyki 10 points11 points12 points 3 months ago
I tried watching that documentary and this is exactly what I did after just 30 minutes
[–]LamdaComplex 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
Same here. 33 min in and I just couldn't go on.
[–]lonerider3000 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
fuck, you guys are strong. i was crying like a little girl after 15.
[–]ToSlowImPro 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I think I might be dead inside, watched the whole thing. I don't know, is it natural to not cry due to pure shock?
[–]LamdaComplex 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
No, this only shows that you have the guts to face the truth. You are not deficient in any way.

[–]Indo_Aficionado 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
I live relatively close to where that was filmed, and went to high school with a few of the people from the documentary. It got significantly more scary when I figured out it was so close to home.
[–]kuromatsuri 6 points7 points8 points 3 months ago
How I felt while watching the Jesus Camp documentary:
"Damn... I used to want to go to one of those things! I am SOOOO lucky that my parents couldn't afford to send me there!"
[–]MK_Ultra86 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
God wants you to send your kids to His camp, but first you gotta pay. ಠ_ಠ
[–]vulcanblight 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Did you ever hear a figure on how mug it actually cost?
[–]drumstyx 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I couldn't agree more.
[–]88327 7 points8 points9 points 3 months ago
I love when the people "speak in tongues." You can imagine that they practice saying gibberish that sounds good.
[–]curelight 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
I remember when this was brought up in the news the camp counselors said it was all taken out of context.
I don't know in what context I would be comfortable with a group of kids, holding hands, praying over a cardboard cutout of George W. Bush.
[–]Calm_Wander 5 points6 points7 points 3 months ago
I was doing a report on how religion was used to control ye masses or something like that back in the 11th grade. My teacher suggested I check this documentary out for my last example.
That teacher is awesome. Jesus camp, not so much.
[–]TH0UGHTP0LICE 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
The praying to the cardboard cut-out of George Bush was scary, but the holy water from Nestle make me ragelol
[–]MongoIPA 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
Anyone else invision the kid in the church at the beginning with the rat tail becoming a future serial killer for jesus? Yikes
[–]CharlemagneInSweats 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
When you've recovered, and feel brave again, watch the doc on Hell House. I live near it.
[–]riki-ny 4 points5 points6 points 3 months ago
Is it good or bad that I didn't know that such documentary exists...?
[–]ProudAtheist2012 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
I didn't know it existed either...
[–]Something_More 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I wish I could forget...
I would assume bad for everyone, unless you need more ammo for /rAtheism
[–]KingQuagaar 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
I really want to watch Jesus Camp, but I fear for my sanity.
[–]Lotsapeople 3 points4 points5 points 3 months ago
Watching it made me about as angry as I could have ever possibly been.
[–]vulcanblight 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Im gonna assume your atheist by that comment but do you correct me if I'm wrong. Me however, I'm a christian who's only seen the trailer, and I feel ashamed for the indoctrination of children that they do. These people have big heart, but sadly have a big hearts doesn't make up for not using your eyes when driving.
[–]Lotsapeople 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
You assume correctly. I don't mind children being brought up with religion, but it should only be one aspect of their lives, not every aspect of it. I know that not everyone brings up their children the way the children in Jesus Camp do. The extremes that they go to with these kids, I feel that their parents have ruined their childhood quite possibly the rest of their lives.
Home schooling them in order to ensure that they don't learn anything but what is in the bible, is just messed up. Forcing them to go up to people at a bowling alley and talk with them about Jesus. Makes me sick, sure maybe they do love Jesus, and maybe they do believe in God and whatnot, but they are kids. Let them be kids, let them run around and play with their friends, don't force religion down their throats.
[–]Londonsawsum 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I laughed at what they said about Harry Potter. I love how freaked out people got over a clearly fiction story. I guess the worry they will stray away from their "true word of God" that easily.

saved this .gif just to explain anything I can't stand to see for the rest of my internet career
[–]knighmare 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
it is some scary shit, telling children to be ready to die, that is what happened at places like Waco and the like, everyone was told they needed to be ready to die for what they believed in
[–]vulcanblight 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
Honestly, I would love to see a follow up on those kids they focused on in the film. Especially when one of the children, Levi, speaks with Preacher Ted Haggard after a sermon he had attended at the camp I believe. He says to Ted that he would like to be a preacher himself and that he already preaches at his church. At some point Ted says to Levi, “I say, use your cute kid thing until you’re thirty, and by then you’ll have good content”. A few months later Ted was in a scandal where it was found that he took part in homosexual acts wit other men. The sermon That Levi was going where he spoke to Ted was about homosexuality.
Maybe I'm just over analyzing.
Using Wikipedia for that quote, so it might e incorrect, but still, that would be interesting nonetheless.
TL;DR wanna see film about some children in the film when their older. Also homophobic preacher says something to one child about preaching that no one understands till after preacher is found to be in closet durin a scandal some time later.
[–]GuidoinaSpeedo[S] 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I was thinking the same thing, I'd love to see a follow-up with hopefully a good ending..
[–]drumstyx 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
My reaction
[–]GoodOlSpence 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
Well as someone that has a plethora of Pentecostal churches my reaction was basically "yep."
[–]Whatabagel 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
You know the weird part when I watch that doc is... It takes place in my old church... It makes it even more impactful for me
Please explain more of this, I don't mean to intrude to much but could you please explain more on your reaction to this. Did anyone from your church show this too you? Are you still with that church or have you moved on to other places?
[–]Whatabagel 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Sure, I'd gladly give more info. I went to that church as a child (6-10 years old, and since then my family has moved to another state) but I still have vivid memories of what it was like. I figured out about this documentary one year ago and I thought I would check it out, and I was absolutely shocked when I found out it was centered around my church... I can recognize the people and the areas the go and have memories from those places. Watching it brought me to tears, as I realized the environment I was brought up in and just how much indoctrination goes on what I remember being just a normal Sunday for example.
[–]ProudAtheist2012 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
I just watched the whole thing, and I think I'm about to have a mental breakdown. They are literally brainwashing these kids and using scare tactics. It's scary.
[–]ProudAtheist2012 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
And I just read that the camp has been closed :)

i had to stop the movie half way through because my boyfriend and i were crying...
[–]kobayashimaru13 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
Never, ever watch it stoned. I've watched that movie several times and the one time I did watch it high, I got so scared I had to turn it off about 20 minutes into the movie.
[–]Barnaby_Jones 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
One of the three children this documentary focuses on is my cousin, Victoria. She was the daughter of Sandra in the documentary, with George being on tour in Iraq. They're nice people; and they don't discuss their religion unless asked about it first. I definitely don't support their religion, (especially the child brainwashing thing) but they aren't running around knocking on doors shoving it down every ones throats.
I'm more curious to see what happens with my cousins now that they're all making their way into college(I may secretly wish that they become corrupt and turn away from their extremist beliefs when introduced to the university environment).
[–]dashikiman 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I spent most of my time watching the documentary laughing at the babbling idiots.
[–]Londonsawsum 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
I also noticed that she said not reading the bible will weaken your "spirit man". It's funny because most people become atheists because they read the bible.
[–]Razoth 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
this was probably one of the few movies/documentary's that i turned off after 10 minutes, i just could't take it anymore, i was getting so angry at how WRONG this is that i wanted to punch those homophobe christ loving idiots right in the face. they would truly deserve that.
[–]ben876 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
15 minutes in, i cannot go any further
[–]NoelVance 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago
