What Iceland really looks like:

Thank you for this corrective. I see all these beautiful pictures of Iceland and think "I must move there immediately." Now I know better.

I'm not an expert, but even I can tell this isn't natural.

Yeah, way way way too overdone on the HDR and saturation.

Nothing HDR about it - this is not a scene that would have high dynamic range. Somebody has just brought up the shadows in post-production.

I guess you're right, it doesn't appear that light is coming from multiple sources like in a hdr shot that is done with exposures from different times of the day. The saturation is certainly pumped up on it way too much though.

edit: typo removed

HDR doesn't really have anything to do with multiple light sources or time lapse. It's simply combining multiple exposures of the same scene with various exposure levels to cover the entire dynamic range so that nothing is over or under exposed. Tone mapping is the technique that most people notice here as unrealistic and silly looking- it artificially brightens shadows and dims the bright spots often resulting in obvious halo effects around areas of great contrast.

My apologies, clearly I don't know what I'm talking about at all. Thanks for explaining.

This is the worst abuse of HDR I have seen in a while. Horrible.

It's very rare to see an image I think has been improved with HDR. The vast majority of the time it kills an image for me.

However that's committing the "toupee fallacy" - "toupees are terrible, I can always spot them because they all look bad". I'm sure there are thousands of pictures which I think are marvellous and have no idea that they are HDR renderings. When done right you shouldn't know. So yeah, it can be a good thing. But if I look at a picture and immediately know it's HDR then 99% of the time I won't like it.

A good HDR composite you won't even notice, it will just look natural. The real thing to blame is bad tone mapping, not HDR.

Thank you. A lot of people have no idea when they're looking at a composite image. Tone mapping is not HDR.

Newer DSLRs have over 10 stops of dynamic range, and the human eye has between 10-14 stops at any given time. The sensitivity of the human eye changes VERY rapidly depending on what you're focusing on, so if you're surveying an entire scene, then your eye will have a greater dynamic range. But if you're just looking at one thing (like mountains in the background), then yes, your eye's dynamic range is between 10-14 f-stops. You definitely don't need HDR to have a realistic looking photo.

What is "stops of dynamic range"?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

One stop is a "doubling" of the amount of light. It's a relative measurement. So say some item in the scene has a certain luminosity, if you have one stop of dynamic range and that item is just perfectly dark, then an element with double the amount of light hitting your sensor will just be "blown out", or perfectly bright.

I don't get it either, when so many people like pictures like this I sometimes wonder if there's something wrong with me :P

[–]climbinginzen 12 points13 points ago

It would probably be a gorgeous picture without much or any processing. Why go crazy with hdr? And, there is nothing wrong with you. It's kind of like why so many people love reality television. They love drama (or in this case dramatic imagery) and are not at all concerned with 'reality'.

[–]fullcapabilities 1 point2 points ago

Whats wrong with it?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nothing. Photo snobs like to decry the use of HDR even when it adds to the picture as it does here. They seem to forget that any digital photo is a mere "interpretation" of signals from the sensor and is just as much a mockup as any HDR photo you will see.

You've got to be kidding me, that picture of the hagia sophia a while back was bad, this... no way. Totally adds to the picture, get off your high horse and enjoy.

Looks like the skyline was copied, flipped and brushed in on a different layer of photoshop? I would have toned down the saturation a bit and added some effects to the "water" Good pic though.

Edit Threw it through Photoshop to show you what I mean. Hope that's cool. (This is a very quick edit)

[–]dafragsta 5 points6 points ago

While that does happen, there are definitely shots out there that are legit, having perfect reflections. When there is no wind, the water is pretty much a perfect mirror.

[–]Wastebreed 6 points7 points ago

Oh I know, but the tells are everywhere in this particular example. Most notably where the grass meets the water in the foreground to the left. You can see that the actual water was removed and the reflection layer was underneath. I added a shadow in my quick version to add realism to it, bt there are several other things a person could do to refine it. Mine was a simple edit to show what I was talking about.
